The game had bugs since release, but still, I'm replaying it because I found this game in an action RPG bundle way back (DVD box mind you) and remembered it. I still will recommend it because it's an hidden gem, may you be willing to look beyond the flaws. The game is a mix of Diablo with a bit of titan quest for stats/gear stat requirements in a cel shaded artstyle. If you side with either nature or technology through quests, you also get access to faction gear and skill tree. Want to use gunpowder weapons on a goblin ? Guess what, gotta side with tech. Want to be a troll druid with wolves as sidekicks ? Guess what, gotta side with nature.
HUGE DISCLAIMER THOUGH : Read the guide on the community page to install the game properly for it to work. You will have to install a legacy version of PhysX, then download Silverfall, then download Silverfall Earth Awakening, then verify the integrity of the game files from earth awakening using steam, and then start the game only from earth awakening to have access to the OG game + the expansion. In that order. If unsure, the GOG version of the game apparently runs fine.
The game studio is from France, and there are some mistranslations which will be confusing for some mechanics :
The game interchangeably uses "Strenght" and "Force" but both are the same exact thing. In french, if you are strong, we effectively say "mass" instead of "weight"
The game interchangeably uses "melee" and "hand-to-hand" but both are the same exact thing. "Hand to hand" is a bad translation of "corps à corps"( "body to body" if I mistranslate it even more). This will get weird if you use melee weapons, but no doesn't just apply to fisticuffs.
broken garbage.
old school dnd. the controls are a bit difficult.
BEFORE YOU BUY, PLEASE READ THIS!!!
First off, this game is 11 gigs on the hard drive. WHY?!?!? It's an old game, why would an old game need over 11 gigs? The original game is 8 gigs. This is already fouled up in so many ways.
When you buy this game, the game won't work right away, there's a Steam bug that prevents you from playing the game until you do a few things.
1.) You don't need to buy the original "Silverfall" game, however, it is required
2.) This is an expansion pack that goes with this game
3.) Why Steam hasn't fixed this bug is beyond me
THis game works just fine, however, here is what you need to do to get this game to work if/when you buy this game...
1.) Install the game as normal with Steam
2.) After you install this game, right-click on the game title in Steam
3.) Select "Properties" from the menu
4.) Select "Installed Files" from the menu
5.) Click on the "Verify Integrity of game files"
6.) When it does this, it will say that it's missing 150 files
7.) Let it do it's thing and install the rest of the missing files
8.) Once done, now the game is installed, however, you are not done yet
9.) Go to google, and search for "PhysX_2.4.4_SystemSoftware.exe"
10.) Make sure it's the PhysX_2.4.4_SystemSoftware, and nothing else
11.) Download that file and install, it's needed to play ths game
12.) Do not install the current or newer version of PhysX, it won't work
(For the record, when you install this game, this file is in the "Silverfall" folder in the Steam directory, go to your Steam folder...
Usually in "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Silverfall"
In there, there should be a file "PhysX_2.4.4_SystemSoftware.exe", install this file because it is needed.
Once installed, now it should work.
(If it doesn't work, there's one more thing you might do. In the "Silverfall" folder in Steam, look for the...
"silverfall.exe"
Right-click on the "silverfall.exe", click on "Properties", click on the "Compatibility" tab, and in the "Compatibility Mode" section, check the box and select "Windows XP Service Pack 2", then click "Apply". It should work now. If the game still doesn't work, I am not sure what other advice I can offer you, other than a refund.
Now, with that being said, time to review...
Silverfall is a 3D style RPG game, similar to "Baldur's Gate". When you begin the game, it will ask you to first, make a character, and then if you want to start at Lv 1 for the main game, or Leverl 45 for the expansion pack, which is this game. This game requires you to be level 45 as the original game you start out with the main story and build yourself up.
Graphics are actually not too bad compaired to today's games. The character design is very nice and 3D models are very smooth. The animations are very well done, and the characters, monsters, and environments have a very ncie look to them.
Movement can be done in 2 ways. You can use the "WASD" keys to move, or you can use the mouse to click on where you want to go. You can use the "Delete" and "Page Down" keys to rotate the camera around, and use the "End" and "Home" keys to angle the camera where you want it. Use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out as needed. Press the "C" key to see your character stats as well as increase your stats when you level up. Press the "I" key to see your characters items, weapons, and armor as well as used to equip your weapons and armor. Equiping your weapons and armor is as simple as click and drag to the proper locationon the character. Press the "M" key to see the map of the area you are in. When you start out, it's covered in a tan like fag, but as yuo travel, you will show more of the game as you progress through the game. To attack monsters, you just find one and click on the monster.
Along the way, you can interact with NPC characters in certain locastions. Warning, not all NPC characters will allow you to interact with. Only those with a "!" or some kind of icon on top of their heads will be allowed to talk to you. Most cases, those with a "!" are quest NPC's.
Money can be obtained from either killing monsters, selling items you find, or finishing quests. As you battle or find chests, items will be found all over the place. Everytime you kill a monster, they will drop items, weapons, or armor. You can also find NPC's who sell weapons and armor in various locations.
Moving from one location to another is a bit odd. Sometimes you will reach an area where it takes you to another realm. (for example, you start out in the swamp, but as you travel, you find the edge of the map that takes you to a desert area) Once in a while, you will find a cave. When you get close, it will ask you if you want to enter the cave or not.
You can also learn spells and crafting in this game. They are updated and upgraded by talking to certain people in verious towns. How much you can upgrade is based on your characters level.
Overall, it's a very neat game. It's just sad that this game has so many issues to deal with before you can play the game. Oddly enough I did not have any crash issues playing this game. Every time I have played, it plays smoothly without crashing or dumping me back to Windows.
Some things to keep in mind when you get this game...
1.) It's an old game, it came out around 2007, a time when Windows XP was still used. So if the game does not work for you, please don't be too upset, it's an old game and ran under Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
2.) When changing the settings in your game, please set it no higher than 1366x768. It works great in 1920x1080 and the graphics are just fantastic for it's time, even at higher resolutions. However, the text will shrink in size the higher you set the resolution. This is a gaming bug that they did not consider at the time. So please keep this in mind when you set your settings. Keep the resolution a bit low so you can read the text.
3.) It's sad that Steam sells the original game and this expansion as 2 different games. During the time when the game was out, they made a "Gold" version, which was both games in 1. I don't understand why Steam didn't make it as one game, as it is sold as a "Gold" game most other places. The fact that you don't need to buy the first game makes it seriously redundant to get the first game in the first place.
4.) When you are walking around, if you have some kind of issue where you can't walk any further, well, oddly enough, you probably can't walk any further, even if it shows or looks like you can. Not so much a bug as the game was very limited in scope as well as map size. Again, this is an old game, it can only do so much.
From my point of view it is still an amazing rpg & looting game
I got familiar with this game long long time ago.
Around the year of ?? 2009 ??, one of the Hungarian gamer magazine (maybe "PC Guru") came with this game's !!!! CD !!!! as a bonus ^,^ (yepp.. CD and not DvD :D )
( Previously its base game, the "Silverfall" CD was the bonus for the monthly magazine :) )
I loved and still love this OFFLINE game even if it has some annoying mistakes.
Why did I buy it even if I have its CDs? ==> Easier to download and install via Steam :P
Is it worth to buy this game in 2023 and in the upcoming years?
Unfortunately I do not know... Even if this game provide many many features
- skills
- -> you can unlock different base attacks with "unique" bonuses and CAN improve them with skill points further more. Which is quiet unique due to so far I had not seen such a thing in nowadays games.
- -> active skills
- -> many many passive skills.
- Party with NPC
- -> During your journey you will meet many many NPCs and some of them can be hired to your party BASED on which side (Technology vs Nature) you are on currently. (unfortunately it can be affected by some missions only)
- Even this game made almost 2 decades ago it have a very huge map. This map built up by many smaller areas. Crossing borders will trigger a loading screen so the target area can be loaded.
- Every NPC that can be hired has its "own feeling" that has to be handled via interacting with them
- Average story
But to mention some bad points as well :P
- If your character dies, you have to find your corpse and get your Equipments back (kek...)
[*] Sometimes the Earth Awakening has to be completely reinstalled or some tricks has to be used due to the steam version for some reason sometimes failed to start even if you just closed it and did not modify its files. But on the steam forum and maybe on reddit you can find more information about it (lol.....)
So yea....basically it is a good game but.... has some issues xDD
Great Game, worth having both, but this a stand alone.. You do not need the 1st game, however, you will start at level 40+ and the story is a continuation so you won't know past events, but you will make new events happen. there is no good and evil in the game, rather nature and machine.. quests you do will change the game and game-play. nature builds with land and all wood based ect... machine destroys the land but gives you strong weapons. Great idea. worth a check.
This is a very old RPG game with a lot of strange little quirks. The enemies scale with your level making the game difficulty incredibly punishing. If you know how to play the game well this isn't a concern as any character type, properly equipped and built, can complete the full game in an hour on the hardest difficulty.
There is no information on how stats work, and some skills are broken. The crafting system is a great example as a lot of the enchants don't do what they say they do. If you want to master this game you'll have to do a lot of in-game experimentation and theory crafting; however, no one will bother because the game isn't really good enough to make you do so. I have sheets and sheets of paper covered in notes about enchantments, stats, skills, racial abilities etc etc.
I love this game as I've played it, on and off, for years. It's always fun to come back to and create a new character when I have a wee holiday from work. With the correct foundation you can create characters that can 1-shot kill the hardest monsters in the game and the fast-paced nature of good end game builds reminds me of the old Diablo days. I would not recommend it to others as hey could simply play a better game which is less punishing.
tutorial is very harsh, to many text, to many abilities, and enemies too strong from the first minute, i expected a lot and i ended disapointed
Once past the prologue, the constant spawning of groups of foes a few meters apart (mind, not exagerating) makes the game something of a chore.
A real pity that lack of balance, and a waste of good art design.
But anyway the game is entertaining all the same if you persist.
The Earth Awakening improves on many problematic aspects of the main game, adding a big chunk of map, changing the UI, the way the camera works (which is a huge improvement compared to the original game), adding a possibility to move with WASD (which again rescues you in may situations and solves problems from the base game) and a bunch of skills. But it comes with its own problems. The game crashes frequently on maps with high number of enemies, especially the Etherea's library and the Nexus. There was no other option for me than rush through those using a speedhack, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to finish the game.
Nevertheless the game is much better with the expansion and I can recommend it, if you like janky games.
3.2 hours of Crashing at random times of mouse free look. I give up. Im sure its a Great game that is up my alley, Sadly its Jank on my pc. I got to the main starting area, ive killed about 20 mobs. Got some loot. Wish I could keep going but its to frustrating trying to figure what else could be wrong.
I've loved this game since the boxed version of Silverfall, when I could barely run it. I highly recommend adding this to the base game for the sheer tonnage of content and improvements. Supports higher resolutions, but the font size becomes microscopic. Still looks good, and plays great.
Feels like your own personal MMO. Character developement still shines with tech vs. nature decisions, and racial abilities. Helpful companions, a vast world to explore, and tons of steampunk, and fantasy trope loot.
It's a real shame that this didn't become the classic that it deserves to be.
This is a game to play if you've played through the bigger arpgs. This is a little more niche with a convoluted plot and lesser controls. It's still a decent game though and is fine for several hours of fun. It also mixes in a little choice and consequence with nature vs tech.
A nice expansion adding lotsa content.
First of all, it enchanes the base game. You have more control over the camera, and you can use WASD-movement. There are a couple more skills, a couple more effects for looted equipment, two more playable races. The autoleveling for enemies is limited, so now you're able to surpass them at some point. Blacksmithing skills sadly use regular skillpoints which you should rather invest in your regular fighting abilities, but if you have skillpoins to spare (or lotsa gold to redistribute skillpoints), you can double or triple the power of your weaponry and fine-tune attack speed to meet your demands.
New content is great.
New locations are more interesting-looking than the ones from the base game (did not like the spacestation though). Music is once again quite generic, but there are a few nice themes
Enemy groups now contain mobs with different abilities, like healers and summoners; bosses also are more invloved, and at least two of them required from me to do some manuvering. By the end of the game, you're still stuck fighting the same necroraiders though, so I mostly run past the enemies in the last stretch of the game.
Writing is also quite nice. I liked the main villain. The sidequests are more invloved with choices, and I also liked how the player character adopts the role he/she gained at the end of the base game. The nature-technology conflict takes backseat though, there's exactly one location where it at least somewhat matters. I also disliked a few references to popculture, those were very corny.
This game is addicting, the special graphics look and game play will keep you coming back too it. You need to buy silverfall and this for it all to work correctly. The weapon effects give off an awesome glow and its especially fun to play while its night time in game. Definitely fun game with a different look ! You also earn heroes as you play. Managing your inventory is more of a drag and drop thing, so if your ok with that you ll like the game.
Im definately recommending this game if you like dungeon siege, and also I got it to work by reading posts in the discussions on the Silverfall (first game) page.
If it was easy for me then it can be for you too.
I bought both games as both were on sale, turns out you need both to run.
I have win7 (x64), Nvidea gt 630m and i7 . My laptop is about 6years old now so not surprised it can handle this old game.
Install the first game, install nvidea legacy driver, install expansion game.
From steam library leftclick on 1st game to get properties and install local files, do this again for expansion game.
Play game thru expansion pack only and start on level one.
I havent bothered with making the font bigger, and im not too fussed on ultra fancy graphics as long as there is no lagging.
I'm mixed about this game.
- It looks nice visually with a partially cell-shaded style that blends well and doesn't give off an overly cartoony presentation for the darker story and setting.
- It has some innovative systems that set is apart from other ARPGs like the crafting system and Technology VS Nature branches
- Loads of loot and gear with various properties that all appear on your character
- Endless character building options
But there are some issues.
- Some environments look nice, others are bland and feel low effort.
- Party management can be tricky, and controls can feel clunky
- Some bugs and crashes, along with some confusing and buggy quest objectives
Overall, if you just want to try a new Hack and Slash ARPG that isn't a diablo clone and you like to really build a customized character, this one will scratch that itch. None of it's drawbacks ever make the game feel broken, and you can adjust the dificulty from the standard easy to brutal difficulty right from the start.
I don't recommend this game to people looking to try the ARPG genre for the first time, as there are smoother experiences with a richer world to explore. For veterans, I recommend this is as a nice alternative to the big hitters that we've all played for hundreds of hours. There's enough depth and variety of loot to make it a satisfying experience.
I have some hardcore nostalgia for this game on PSP, it was simple but very focused, all abilities were actual abilities with special effects (bleed, haste, poison, regen) and were effective with even just a few points so on PSP it really encouraged you to weave abilities on any build to maintain buffs and debuffs. Additionally the only prerequisite for leveling abilities is your character's current level so you can skip and pick specific abilities without having to take any that won't help your build.
The combat was very fast and generally didn't drag out with nice spacing to let you pick your fights at your own pace so you didn't get bogged down fighting the same enemies for extended periods of time and while enemies generally didn't diversify within zones between zones there was a LOT of enemy diversity so while within zones things don't change up much between zones you have a fresh experience and zones didn't outstay their welcome (with a few exceptions, mainly Cloudworks thought that may have been because I played it a lot trying out different builds).
There were places to explore on every level with a simple map and checkpoint system to assist in this and chests and secrets hidden on most levels to reward you for going off the main path, everything from items to alignment points and quests.
The story was definitely weak but the gameplay made up for it the speed and focus of the game letting me ignore it outside of the very strong aesthetics every zone had, from the foreboding swamp and ruins around the refugee camp to the desolation of the cloudworks desert, the industrial slum of Lower Cloudworks, the floating estates of Upper Cloudworks and the teeming forests and rivers of Gaian to say the least, only continuing to impress as you continue.
While the graphics were nothing to write home about they were pretty standard for the PSP at the time of the game's release.
Sadly in a bout of teenage folly I sold my PSP and all my games for what was basically drug money so it's no longer something I can play.
When I saw this on steam I thought it'd buy it and relive some nostalgia only to be horrified to discover that this game is one of a few victims of platform diversity, The Force Unleashed being a notable victim of this). Basically the PC version of this game is VASTLY different from the PSP release and to it's detriment.
Basically every good thing I said about the PSP version has been ruined in some way in the PC release with the exception of the zones' visuals though they're sorely muted thanks to the poor pacing and pathing (both in the lack of direction and the actual pathing, your character will get stuck on many, many, many things).
There's a lot more enemy diversity and a lot of the bonus concept art on the PSP release I finally got to see in action as a lot of enemy types were cut from the PSP probably to save space but on PC it just feels like everything is overpacked and enemies are placed VERY lazily in clumps of 2-4 that you have to engage in clusters.
Abilities are mostly passive % bonuses to damage or defence and are very boring, the contols are wonky and just ugh. It's awful and it makes me sad. No doubt I have some rose tinted goggles for the PSP version but I find it very disheartening that the 'full' version of the game is so watered down and soured.

TLDR: Used launcher to detect my GPU and get appropriate settings. Still would not lauch. Win10 64bit Ryzen+Polaris. Tried verifying file integrity, disabling hardware and launching on lowest settings. No cigar.
Silverfall is not a good game.
It has bad voice acting, weak story, god awful level design, several glitches and crashes, not-so-deep combat, etc, etc.
Why am I recommending it?
Because it's FUN!
Silverfall's salvation is rather fun combat and good looking player and equipment models.
All I want from ARPG's is the loot that makes me look good while killing mobs that drop loot and Silverfall does that!
Another strong point is that there are no classes.
You can spend your skill points on 8 different skill trees - that's A LOT of options!
You can be the archer that casts dark magic spells or nature warrior that occasionally turns into werewolf or technology fire mage that summons robots, or...
So, yeah, if this sounds good to you, grab Silverfall: Complete! Don't buy separately! And probably wait for a discount, because, like I said, it's not exactly a good game.
Also, don't expect it to be fun from the beginning. It's kind of game that gets better after playing for some time.
PS.: There are few reviews here somewhere with installing instructions, follow them!
EDIT: Added missing articles.
I've been playing Silverfall ever since it was released on steam. I love RPG games, and most of all i love RPG games with a good story and sidequests to it, that makes Silverfall and Silverfall: Earth Awakening very good and on the same time the motion in it, it's the first RPG i ever saw where there is so smooth motion to it, and that the people "ragdolls" When they get killed, even the enemies. the loot drop style is about the same as Diablo, which i also love a lot! to be honest, there is nothing wrong with this game, it's abseloutly amazing
Silverfall is one of those games I always wanted to buy at the game store but never pulled the trigger on. It sat on the shelf with Divine Divinity, another game I always wanted to buy but something else had more of my attention. Having now played the latter and just finished this game I can safely recommend that no one play this game and instead play Divine Divinity if you're looking for a hidden gem. Silverfall isn't bad but it's terribly mundane, I only ever encountered one crash and following the Steam forum suggestions didn't have any issues installing it. I played it to the end, though I'm not sure why, it's almost mind numbing enough combat like Diablo 2 to just parade through for loot but the loot isn't very exciting either. Overall I think this game was just a bit too easy, and while it isn't terrible it just isn't worth recommending that any of my friends play. It's one redeeming quality, if I had to choose one, would be that it's graphics engine plays quite nicely with the Nvidia Control Panel so I was able to easily add far more AA and AF than would have been possible at release. Even tech that wasn't available then like FXAA played nicely, sadly the game doesn't offer a lot of thought through detail so while you have a nice smooth cartoony look after adjusting settings you still aren't left with much to look at.
Be warned : Silverfall installation is broken as hell on Steam.
Original game contain Tagès system protection. It seem Steam version never corrected about that.
If you want to play bundle, always install game in that order :
1--> Silverfall (don't check files integrity 100% because installation is neverending looping)
2--> Silverfall Earth Awakening (SEA)
3--> after SEA install, check file integrity until you reach 100%
To play game, always run SEA instead of Silverfall. You'll get all content.
Never try to install SEA 1st because SEA is false standalone : it use files data shared for both original & standalone extension (like PhysX drivers). If Silverfall is already installed, SEA will only download few files to complete bundle.
Run SEA only when done, you'll get choice to play from level 1 Silverfall or level 45 SEA.
I don't believe i play this game today. This game isn't so bad that people said about it. It is still fun to play if you know how to config it and how to use stats/skills with efficiency.
Perhaps there is a way to play multiplayer without Hamachi. I tried to register @ official link in-game but server down since many years i think. Companions help for heal & support you. But i prefer human players.
Worth the money : i recommend full bundle.
