The game looks horrible. Nothing like the Steam page. It struggles with frame rate on a good computer! I can't believe this gets positive reviews!
Good soundtrack.
For an old game it looks amazing. For me it was a bit hard to get used to the menus and mechanics but it's fun once you understand it.
I love the fact that you can walk around in your city.
City Life 2008 is a city-building simulation game that offers a unique blend of urban planning, management, and strategy. Here's my review of the game:
I enjoyed the game's sandbox mode, which allowed me to build and manage my own city without any specific objectives or time limits. The game's graphics and sound effects were also impressive, with detailed 3D buildings and realistic soundscapes that immersed me in the game world.
One of the standout features of City Life 2008 is its focus on social and economic balance. The game requires you to balance the needs of different social classes, from low-income workers to wealthy entrepreneurs, and manage the city's economy to keep everyone happy. This added a layer of depth to the game that I found engaging and challenging.
However, I did encounter some issues with the game's interface and controls. The game's menus and UI can be clunky at times, making it difficult to navigate and manage different aspects of the city. Additionally, the game's AI can be unpredictable, leading to unexpected problems and challenges that can be frustrating to resolve.
Despite these issues, I would recommend City Life 2008 to fans of city-building simulations. The game offers a unique blend of strategy and management that is both challenging and rewarding. If you're looking for a game that will keep you engaged for hours, City Life 2008 is definitely worth checking out.
Overall, I would give City Life 2008 a solid 7 out of 10. While it has its flaws, the game's engaging gameplay and immersive atmosphere make it a great choice for fans of the genre.
Even as this games approaches an interesting aspect of city and people classes, I must admit this one aged badly and lacks in terms of animation, user friendliness and overall city builder mechanics.
The store pages is also not selling the concept very well anyways, so in case you had any doubt, don't bother :)
A city-builder from 2000s.
It's focused more towards the casual players or beginners.
I have to say it's nothing much, it's quite a simple game but for its time, it was one helluva unique game and the soundtrack rocks.
I love it.
(P.S.: It can run on Windows 10/11, but It's suggested to play on older systems.)
This is a decent game. I like the way it plays and the way it's designed.
It's running just fine on an Aurora R9 16GB NVIDIA 2070. WIN 11
i'd love to see this game brought up to date pretty much as it stands gamewise
with maybe some improvements and additions. More variety in the people and animations.
I'd think any citybuilder would like this game.
Yes, it's old and archaic, but good fun. I like to zone out and relax, listen to some smooth jazz, and turn off my brain for a while. City Life is good for that.
Still has not fixed bug from retail versions with uncontrolled filling of the city by radical chics, when building a large number of corresponding constructions that improve the quality of provided education.
It can be challenging to manage the different social groups, cater to them and build a stable monthly balance, but that's what's so great about this, absolutelz recommended!
"Teens don't like work"
The work im giving the teens is being a cashier in a supermarket at the other side of the continent.
love the game....especially with the cheats. it's exactly what i wanted in a game. the only thing it needs is a train to ride. through and around town/ city.great game without it though. thanks.
A simple yet unique way to play a city building game like Sim City and City Skyline. Great for relaxing and look at the beautifull scenery of the game's graphic. Though the road mechanic and all its transportation isn't as advance as other city building game, it's still quite challenging to play. The Unique Socio-cultural mechanic is also what make this game probably unique among the others alike.
Solid city builder with a guaranteed 15-20 hours of fun and more if you grind. The social/communities aspect really sets this one apart.....you fringe !
Thanks for putting this game on steam it's really nostalgic.
The game itself is alright for its time, but now there's way better games like cities skylines.
It has a unique mechanic that there's 6 different social groups and you have to seperate them into neighbourhoods, and you need all the social classes in your city to run services like healthcare, education, police etc. I kinda like it.
In the end there's not much strategy, you just plop down a housing block and each service nearby. The game is really bad at explaining how it works though so no wonder I couldn't figure it out as a kid. Also there's no QoL and it's really hard making everything neat so your city will probably look ugly as sin, but it's not much of a problem since you get lots of space.
Was great game while simcity4 was stuck in 2D graphics and make weird societies-thingy
And still enjoyable city building game and still recommends even it's been almost 15 years.
An old city simulator gem from 2008 featuring an unique way to handle your population by classes/groups that will enjoy or fight having side-by-side in their neighborhood. It has some flaws here in there but it was quite fun in their time. You're better off getting City Skylines for a real good city sim. This one I got for nostalgia and have some fun building my city just like old times.
The interface seems to be delayed all the time no matter you have enough space in your PC for RAM o ROM, when you are building the city, even if you take away internet connection reduce all other tasks in the PC; it gets slower and slow, up to 5 minutes to build something and move to the next. It seems to be a problem from Steam or the version they got for download; cause I have play this game for many years and I never had any problem except with the version in Steam. Really really bad, bad experience!
No campaign mode, gets stale quickly, has few buildings and things to do and lacks many of those small details that would make it more worthwhile like better in-game stats or the ability to rotate buildings
I bought this game because i couldn't find the trailer song anywhere else on the internet. Turns out that i still can't find the song that is played in the store trailer either; it's not in the game's music folder and neither is it played while playing the game. If the store music is what you're after, better move on. There are similar 80s music in the music folder but not nearly as interesting.
From the store's description it seems like an interesting take on city builder sims by delving deeply into the inhabitants interactions but i dunno how that will pan out in actual gameplay. Certainly not the easiest game to get into.
More detailed review later after i put more hours into it. For now just 5/10 but i'm leaning towards recommended just because it's a little different from other city sims i've played.
A really interesting game. It puts a unique twist on city builders by having what they call "subcultures". They're arranged in a hexagon, with the higher up ones being richer than the ones below. Those touching eachother on the hexagon are friendly, and those opposite are enemies. For example, the blue collars hate the yuppies and vice versa, the elites hate the blue collars, and most of the rich classes hate the poorest class.
The key is that a fully fucntioning city needs people of every class. Someone has to be the janitors and grounds keepers. Artsy Fartsy people need doctors and firemen, and Executives need waiters at their restaraunts. People will not commute to the other side of the city for a job, so you need to manage where housing gets placed for each subculture.
It's definetly worth looking at if you want a unique twist on a city builder.
Fun, and with some interesting concepts. I really like the idea of social classes occupying residential areas, being able to build per social class services, and different social classes not tolerating each other (meaning you may want to avoid mixing them up).
But this implementation of these ideas is very buggy -- it freezes up way too often just to display a bunch of errors on my screen. It also does not tolerate alttabbing (this is on 64bit Windows 8.1 and NVidia GTX 770). And I may be missing something, but I can't see autosave happening.
This means I've started off a couple of times already, but don't have any savegame to speak of.
I'd say you may want to try it out, but bugs mean I found it too painful to actually play the game -- especially in face of competition.
When I first read about it, the concept sounded really interesting - new layers to city building that were different than Sim City, which I will lose myself in for hours. But when it actually came to playing it, the system was broken and the game itself was so glitchy and sticky that I just gave up on it. Juggling faction territory was a pain, balancing upgrades with population mood was a pain, and basically trying to do anything was a huge pain. There is such thing as challenging and fun, but this was just challenging. I wouldn't recommend it. Try Banished instead.
This is really a tough review to write, because I really like a lot of what is going on here. But ultimately I just never found it engaging on the level of, say, SimCity. This has an awesome street view version that lets you walk around and actually FEEL like part of the city, and if you like that sort of thing then this game is definitely one you can have some fun with in that fashion.
In terms of the choices on how to build the city, it all feels a lot more abstract than SimCity, because of the way that there are these social groups and so on.
If you're looking for an entry into the city simulation genre, then probably SimCity 4 (despite its awkward controls by modern standards) is the way to go. If you're into citybuilders as a genre and are looking for another good one after having exhausted others, I can definitely tell you that I had fun with this one despite my gripes. But it's not one that held my attention for dozens of hours.
I was really on the fence as to whether to give this a positive or negative review. Ultimately I felt like I had fun and got my money's worth, though, so that's the main criteria that I guess I should use. The developer should be able to do better, and I hope they get a chance. I'd like to see this evolve in future sequels, but so far it was already fun for what it is.
This game was fun for awhile, but ultimatly it got boring. Theres always people complaining when you upgrade your city, but if you downgrade it, there's no way to get the population up. Factions that get close to each other fight, and they end up burning down a portion of the city, they make crime go up, or they destroy the economy. Essentially you can work up to a certain point, and the entire city will fail before you can expand further.
Another point to make, is that the business's in the game don't have any bonus's added to them, so the best way to run a city is to find the smallest building, and pack them together, because doing that will give absolutely no negative effects.
I'd definitly reccommend this if you want a simplistic city simulator, but I greatly prefer Tropico 4 over this. The only fault with tropico is that the road system is absolutely terrible, and the only way to fix traffic is to redesign your city to situate the traffic better.
