all around good game plus good 2 player mode
I have Civil War 1863 lost my, sound effects????? Going to general setup doesn't fix anything
As the title states, deals with the pivotal year of the American Civil War. Gameplay is as most HexWars games. Decent array of scenarios. If you are comfortable with HexWars style, recommended. Also, should note that I believe this is the first of the series to be published.
In my opinion, this game and others by this developer - Hexwar Games - got a bad rap from many reviewers. First of all, comparing it to a real time strategy game is apples and oranges. Ultimate General may just be a great game, but rts isn't for everyone, or doesn't have to be every time you want to play a game. I like turn based hex games!
Other games of this style and genre may be more historically accurate and more complex, but again, it's apples and oranges. This game is a little on the casual side, and it definitely isn't a real battle simulator. But sometimes I just want to charge those cannons or outflank that line, without feeling like I need a Ph.D. in military history just to play a game. Every tree may not be in the right place, but that's OK with me.
I sunk over 50 hours into this game and I enjoyed every bit of it. I only played the game on medium (of 3 levels) difficulty, and I only played as the Union, so the game offers future replay ability. I definitely feel like I got my money's worth.
I also own and played Civil War: 1861 - no idea why i skipped 1862, but I will go back for it. I also recently took advantage of a big sale here on steam to buy 2 more Hexwar Games titles - Civil War: Bull Run 1861 and Civil War: Gettysburg. Rebs be warned, I am a battle hardened Hexwar veteran, and I'm coming to run you off the map.
In a nut shell, whatever this game isn't, it is a lot of casual fun and I recommend it for those looking for this particular brand of apple.
Quite simple game, which can be challenging on hard mode, but for a bit of relaxing after a long day of work
This game felt dated and difficult to play for dumb reasons.
There are people who can probably tell you better than I about the design flaws in coding or whatever but from gameplay value there are much better options out there for a civil war era game designed around RTS / strategy.
The achievements are bugged in it as well - you fulfil the criteria for them and they never drop.
Game has no support anymore - no shock there really as its old.
Save your money and search for more modern and playable civil war era games is my advice - shame as the game was initially very appealing to me.
WORKED FOR A WHILE THEN CONSTANT FLICKERING/ ASKED FOR REFUND BUT ANY GAMEPLAY LONGER AND TWO HOURS THEY REFUSED! NOT AT ALL HAPPY AND WONT PURCHASE ANYTHING ELSE THROUGH STREAM
A really fun simple turn-based strategy war game.
The difficulty balance is pretty solid, the graphics are great, sound design is awesome and overall it's just a really fun game to play.
Hexwar Games are an awesome company, I had technical problems with another game by them...it was fixed within 12 hours. They are friendly and care about the games and their fans
Looking at the achievements stats, 0,1% of all the players has gotten any achievement for finishing any campaign (there are a handful of different campaigns consisting of 5-8 missions). Now that says something.
First off, the price is 10 Euro for a game that looks and behaves like it was released in the late 90's. There is nothing about the game that can justify to charge even 10 Euro for it. Sound, AI, graphics, game mechanics...all has been done better by games developed almost 20 years ago. The only saving grace the game has is the historical correctness, which I can't judge since I don't really care about that level of detail of the American civil war. Now, if your biggest interest is the battles of the American civil war, then you might find this very interesting.
A pet pevee of mine is also when people can't tell the difference between strategy (which this claims to be) and tactics (which this is all about). Strategy in a game is stuff like recruiting units, carrying over units between missions, developing your army or lands in some direction. Civil War: 1863 doesn't have anything like that, it's merely a selection of set situations on battle maps.
This feels exactly the same as the other games by this company that I have bought. Same game with different graphics. No scenario looks or feels like anything from the Civil War. It would have probably felt better if it was small unit tactics, as opposed the "Civil War 1863" Everything just stands one or more hexes away and blasts away. maps are not big enough to make it feel like the game advertised. A very poor effort.
It's a nice game especially for the price. Its a simple fun little game. There is some thinking and strategy involved. The AI has actually beaten me a couple times on normal difficutly which is extremely rare. It has worked great on my computer and was easy to learn. It is a good edition to a library because sometimes you only have an hour to relax and play. I have other games much more in depth. Often the wife will say go play one game and dinner will be done in an hour. Most of my games take two weeks to finish so at least with this one I can make it down to dinner. Plus there just arent many Civil War games out there. I really liked, mid 1990's, Civil War I and II by Sierra and Sid Meiers Gettysburg it would be great if Steam could sell these so I could play them again.
Save your money. Even at $10 it isnt worth it. Cant even finish the tutorial because of bugs.
Its an extremly good game but once you've played it for a while you can start predicting where the AI will move an it gets boring. But if you like turn based tile statigy games the allow you to master the game to where you can almost completely control the out come of the game then this is the game for you.
A very well designed, historically accurate tactical strategy game whose clean interface and ease of play nicely implement the constantly deeper and more challenging game that it becomes with each update. These frequent updates include new features, improvements to the interface and AI, etc. and many of them are based on player feedback and suggestions. The game could benefit from a greater variety of weapons and units (scouts, partisans, engineers, etc.), the ability to entrench in place, bonuses for flank attacks or ambushes and finally, a map and scenario editor would be an awesome addition since it would essentially allow players to re-create any battle they wish.
Unfortunately, after the first update, the game no longer ran on my Dell tablet (it continued to run fine on my pc) so I contacted tech support. I've been a pc gamer since the days of DOS and I must say that the customer service has been some of the best I've ever received be it from a behemoth like Electronic Arts or an indie like HexWar, with personalized responses addressing my issue in particular and their efforts to fix it with each new update. So, considering the price, the ease of play, the fact that you can pick it up for a few minutes or a few hours, the deep and varied gameplay and the excellent customer service, I can highly recommend this game.
Pretty cool little pick up and play game for the price. Not too in-depth which is a plus for me, I usually lose interest in strategy games with a hefty learning curve. Catchy drum rolls and a good amount of play time for $10. Nice gem for any Civil War buffs.
Nice little game. It is not a serious wargame: there is no simulation of morale or or supply, but it is simple to learn and fun to play.
Its a kick back session for just fun. If you want a hardcore game this is not it. But if you just want to have fun for a few minutes out of your day ... Get the game !
I'm a big American civil fan . When i seen this game for around $10 i had to give it a try. If your a civil fan like me, pick up this game!
This is a casual civil war game that's fun and is more of a beginner level game than a serious simulation. It's turn based but there is no diplomacy or supply lines to worry about so you just have to focus on utilizing your troops the secure the scenario goals. There's some different formations for troops and cavalry can be mounted or on foot. Each of these affect combat effectiveness as does terrain/cover. For the price it's a nice game to play around with but anyone looking for a deep wargame experience will be dissapointed here. Overall if you're looking for an easy to understand civil war game you can pick up quickly and have some hex based combat fun with this should do the trick.
The game is pretty basic, battles feel really small and there dose not seem to be any histrocal battles. The game is still fun and for $10 its ok. If you are looking for something a bit more complex/grand in scale then I would recommend ultimate general gettysburg over this.
