Rumors resurface. Legends are resurrected.
The Whisperer in Darkness is a visual novel based on the cosmic horror story by H.P. Lovecraft. Play as Alex N. Wilmarth, skeptic and professor at Miskatonic University, as you unravel the hideous secrets centered at a secluded farm in the hills of Vermont, coming ever closer to mortal peril.
8 chapters of authentic Lovecraftian horror.
Experience a linear story through painted illustrations, ASCII art, atmospheric sound effects, an unsettling musical score, and frantic email correspondence with a conspiracy theorist who might be a little too close to the truth. No guns, no fighting. Just you, alone to discover what lies hidden in the world you thought you knew. Once you find the truth, can you ever go back?

A good adaptation of “The Whisperer in Darkness”. It really adds a lot of interesting elements to the story that I really liked. The visual novel part of the game is recommended. It's the game play that leaves a lot to be desired. The "Atari Adventure" sequence at the end which is the only interactive aspect to the game was jarring to say the least and took me right out the "moody feel" it had established so well up until then. It seems like the developers felt they had to add a survival horror aspect to it but the 2600 pixel game mechanic didn't do it any service. The jump scare was cheap.
A simple interactive adaptation of the novella of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft.
(With slight modernizing elements, such as the protagonist of the story making use of computer and e-mails, which obviously didn't see as major use in the early 20th century).
It's an interactive story, not really an actual game. Nevertheless, it uses both ambient music or in it's absence, complete silence, quite effectively. And later there's the option to resume the story at different parts, although I believe it's not that big of a task to go through the whole thing in a single sitting.
At the end of the day, a faithful adaptation of the original story, which I would recommend a dedicated fan of Lovecraft to own.
Interesting and short visual novel (not really an interactive game) with a Lovecraftian theme. The graphics are weak but the writing is rather good, as is the music. If you like Lovecraft and just want to read something ominous, I recommend this game. If you're looking for more of an interactive experience, there are better Lovecraftian games out there.
Short visual novel with a good story. Would be nice to see this developer release more like this, perhaps even with some player interactions to move the story forward.
This is simple but very well-made. The art is good and I got a bit of a spook at the end. Enjoyed playing it. Definitely a good adaptation of the story.
Takes about 40 minutes to play through - not a lot of interaction but it is a pretty decent portrayal of a Lovecraft story. A decent purchase for people who are fans of his writing.
Didn't expect it to be that great as it really was. Starting slowly and harmless and sucking you more and more into it. Very well written and worth the few bucks. Font size could be bigger, I have 4k resolution and am sitting 2m away from my tv. It's readable, but +50% in font size would be perfect.
This is not strictly a "game," per se, so much as it is an immersive retelling of one of H. P. Lovecraft's stories. It has been modernized somewhat, as laptop computers and email did not exist during Lovecraft's heyday, but being a fan of Lovecraft's work, I feel that this is an honest retelling. The music and atmosphere are very well done, and the ASCII art lends a certain imaginative charm not found in experiences with better graphics. If you enjoy thrillers, or the horror genre, I believe you will enjoy this.
I was actually quite disappointed when I "played" this, because i expected a game.
What it actually is, is a short re-narrated and modernised version of the original The Whisperer in Darkness fron H. P. Lovecraft.
The only thing you're doing in this so called "game" is click to read further and walk as a 3pixel-person (more like totem) a few steps until the story continues,+
Don't get me wrong, I love text based adventures - but here you get text without adventure.
Before buying make sure to look closely at the screen shots. That 8-bit text is the majority of this product. It teletypes onto the screen. The soundtrack is great, moody, sets a good Lovecraft-like atmosphere. The artwork is interesting to look at and I like the style of it. Sadly however I can not suggest buying this, even on sale.
I found the text hard to read, the 8-bit font is very jarring and does not fit the mood of the piece at all. I find it a bizarre choice. A hand-writing font would have been better. Heck, anything would have been better that the high-contrast blocky text displayed here. I also found the teletyping (one letter put onto the screen at a time) very distracting and way too slow. In the short time I spent with this (I never got to the end), I found myself catching up with the text and having to wait for it to finish "typing."
This game tricked me I thought it would be some sort of visual novel which I guess it is but its just bad art and text straight from the book. If you have read the story I dont see why you would want to spend money on a poorer version of it.
This is a good adaptation of Lovecrafts’ original “The Whisperer in Darkness” story. It’s a very short visual novel with a bit of simple gameplay, and both art style and BGM are so eerie. I honestly hope that the developers will make other VNs based on more classic horror stories!
8/10.
It's a good adaptation of the novella, but some of the changes are just baffling and don't work. I recommend it, but it'd be best to have a copy of the original source material at hand.
Needs some work on the technical side, too. Returning from pausing the game will sometimes proceed the text, and because you can't read any prior text like in most modern VNs, you will find yourself quite confused.
It is an unfortunate set of circumstances that led to the purchase of this game, the main one being a severe lack of media for the average Lovecraft fan outside the literature by the man himself– which, once exhausted, leaves little to satisfy the growing need for Cosmic Horror, and that bubbling, exciting feeling of dread that the old man seemed to produce so easily. The exact failures of other adaptions is a story for another time. Suffice to say that after searching through the existing works I have found few that lived up to my enjoyment of the original works. After playing 'The Whisperer in Darkness' I'm sad to say, my search continues.
If you have read the original story, this is not the game for you. It adds little to what is already there, save a few interesting visuals, which would have had more impact if not for the strange mesh of styles throughout the game. I hesitate to even call it a game, really. With the exception of a few short episodes there is hardly an interactive element, and those elements mostly consist of walking from one room to another.
That's not to say that this was an entire waste of time. The music was well done (definitely wear headphones, should you choose to play this), and like I said some of the visuals were good. Had the artist stuck with one style, perhaps closer to the one originally advertised (not that I'm BITTER) then I would have been more satisfied. If you've not read the original story and perhaps, for whatever reason, tend to prefer visual novels to others, then this might be good for you. Bear in mind there is still a helluva lot of reading so if your patience wears thin easily you might not enjoy it. But then if you don't like reading you probably haven't read through this horrendous review... Oh well.
In short, potential players should be aware that there is not a lot to this game except reading and mood-setting. If you are looking for an interactive horror game you'd be better of taking your business elsewhere.
I've been a fan of the works of H.P. Lovecraft for many years, and this game is a worthy tribute to the eponymic short story. The developer has very handily captured the tense atmosphere and sense of dread that are the hallmarks of Lovecrafts' works.
It's worth mentioning that this product is much more of a visual novel than a game. You are essentally scrolling through a modernized version of the original story with the accompaniment of a creepy sound track and artwork.
I recommend this game for any fan of classic horror fiction, and of course it's a "must own" for Lovecraft fans.
Brilliant visual story of one of H.P. Lovecraft's creepy tales, which I thouroughly enjoyed playing. It has been modernized so makes it just that bit more creepy too (nothing more creepy than emails being sent from your email address when you never wrote them). Unfortunately the resolution was small and so was awkward to read, however the dev is working on improving this.
-It is short (played in under 1 hour) but is something I would definately come back to again.
-It has great use of music and sound effects that complemented the story.
-Simplistic design and great artwork help you visualise aspects of the story, whilst leaving enough to use your own imagination.
Everyone needs a little Lovecraft in their lives, and in this age of computers and staring blankly at glowing screens while the world unknown passes by with our every fleeting breath, this, is a very good introduction to the worlds of the Cthulhu Mythos.
Well done says I.
Now, go and read the other stories.
Not a game but a visual telling of the HP Lovecraft story "the Whisperer in the Darkness"
Well thought out concept and some of the art was fantastic. The "game" parts are quite cumbersome to the flow of the story. Overall though i was happy!
I enjoyed it a lot! Read the original short story a few years ago and really like the modernizing of the setting and characters for this game. Lovecraft's stories often take advantage of the increndible advancements and inherent unknowns of the early 20th century, and a lot of those themes are still relevant today.
This would have been already great as a simple Twine story, but the interactive parts and (awesome!) audio really transform it into a super atmospheric piece of fiction.
Recommended to everybody who likes a good weird tale!
Definately worth the price.
A very interesting story with great audio and art. Loved the ambiance but the segments wereyou did get to play forced you to move a bit slow for my taste, other then the scene where you hold the flashlight. That was spooky as heck. Overall loved it and would love to see more!!!
Interesting story. While it was very short, only an hour, it was well told. I was however, very disappointed that the full screen mode consisted of a black screen with a small 4 1/2 in by 7 in rectangle in which the story was shown. This is not one to sit back and read. I had to sit forward and put my nose to the monitor in order to read it. Not one for people with less than perfect eyesight.
Before you buy it, please be aware it is a story, not a game. There is only a small amount of time that you must move yourself with arrow keys. (Which did not add to the game or story and could have been left out, in my opinion.) With that in mind, it is worth your time, just for the folklore and the mystery.
If they put trading cards or achievs on it I just might re-read it.
