Differences between MARI indie 3.0 and full MARI


  • Project file (.mra) linked to Steam account / cannot be shared with other users
  • The UDIM texture patch count is limited to 6 patches per object
  • The object count is limited to 5 objects
  • Export texture resolution size limited to 4k and 16-bit color per channel
  • Allowed export formats: .exr, .psd, .png, .tga, .jpg
  • Output formats no longer available: .tif, .tiff, .hdr, .dds, and .ptx
  • Python scripting disabled
  • Session scripts disabled
  • Custom shaders not allowed
  • Advanced colourspace configurations and the loading of custom OCIO config files have been disabled. Basic "Nuke-Default" configuration is available, however.
  • The advanced Node Graph has been disabled, but nodes can still be utilized in Mari indie via Graph Layers.
  • 2D colour correct filter has been disabled
  • Custom C-API plugins not supported
  • NukeMari bridge has been disabled

It's alright but I don't understand all the hype behind it. Being a Substance Painter user for 3 years I thought this would be a step up...it wasn't.

To cut a long story short, Mary Indie is a great piece of software at a great price (at this point anyway), that is better than SP in only one thing: Projection Painting. Keep in mind though it feels like it's straggling to remain relevant.

Quite frankly if you are already on the Allegorithmic train, it's a hard sell really.

I will not recommend this software for obvious reasons. There is no support from the devs with the indie version. Any questions on Mari indie seem to be ignored.

This products U.I. is completely terrible and confusing.

There is no symmetry that is decent. its 1 demensional. So if you wanted to turn your model to paint on the side with symmetry correctly, well you can expect that not to be a thing.

Its extremely laggy and is a CPU HOG.

MARI 4.0 is coming out and the Steam users are still on 3.0 with no changes in between. Until they start treating the little guys like actual customers I will not recommend this product to anyone.

I subscibed for 1 month because I had a hi res zbrush sculpt to texture which substance painter seemed to have problems coping with . I still had to break up the model into manageable subtools and MARI managed it , albeit with a slight lag. The projection tool is great and the layer system is super powerful and intuitive if you are used to working in photoshop. The biggest issue for me was channel painting , I couldn't work out how to easily paint normals or height information.Although there are seperate layer stacks for each channel , I couldn't get to grips with it. I ended up back in substance painter . I will probably have another go when I have more time. The main reason for its use was for skin and eye texturing.

Sadly the Foundry is not updating this program, the UI is compared to other versions massively outdated and there is no support available.

If you want to use legacy crippleware, this might be of interest - otherwise... avoiding this is the best you can do.
I wonder why Steam is still allowing the sale of this.

BECAUSE THERE ARE NO ANY PATCHES OR UPDATES SINCE IT RELEASED YEAR AGO, THE VERSION IS TOTALLY OUTDATED AND NOBODY GIVES A FU*K FOR STEAM CUSTOMERS.


The Mari itself is a good tool for CG arts
However, to compare with the Allegorithmic's Substance Painter service for Steam customers
Foundry should really be ashamed for themselves.

Yeah pretty much no support for the INDIE version, I cancelled my subscription right away, I had an issue that I couldnt fix with the INdie version.
You kinda get a cold shoulder from support

Don't buy it, subscibe or whatever.

Because you will find yourself in an ackward position. Basically, Foundry doesn't see Steam customers as Their customers at all.

I'v posted a question via customer service on their site and waited for a day just to get this:

If you are on a Linux Box or Windows this will work perfect. On a Mac? Don't bother. It doesnt even install. Searched the forums and you will notice that they don't even have a solution for this.

I would love to have MODO Indie working on Linux but this is not an option. I have to keep changing from one machine to another to work on my projects.

Makes no sense and the developers are not taking good care of this issue for Mac users nor Linux users.

I can't believe but think of installing and using Windows as my main developer enviroment, it just sucks!!!

This new version is a great improvement. With Mari extension, it is by far the most powerful way to paint 3d models.
Though I use Substance painter for small game objects, it isn`t quite up there with Mari yet,,
If you are looking to create AAA quality textures for your high-end characters, get yourself a copy.
I normally make base textures in Substance designer and paint them in Mari, using a variety of Mari`s unique features.
