The game shows the sad reality of mental institutions taking place in the 40's when it was pretty bad. The story isn't bad its fairly good. My main issue with this game is the snails pace you progress at. It makes the game boring. If you could walk faster I think that would eliminate my concerns with this game. Its a similar feeling to people walking slowly infront of you with no way around them. If that doesn't bother you then I would recommend it.
8/10
Very good experience that gives a really dramatic insight on mental disease in the first part of 20th century.
It is an experience, and not a game, since the goal is to stimulate your reflection about the sufference that these people lived in that period.
The experience is not for everyone since it has some parts that are quite strong if you deep in to the story and let the immersion work.
To get the most out of it you cannot just buy, download and hit the play button, that will make you miss a big part of the context that won't make you understand the big why developers have chosen this subject.
I strongly reccomend to do some research on italian asylum history in the beginning of 1900 and only after hit the play button. That will make your experience much more meaningful and you will understand the big why behind it.
Congratulations to the develpers that I met at Svilupparty several years ago when all of this was still a tech demo, I wish you all the bests!
This is a powerful exploration of what was reality for countless thousands of people. This game hits especially hard for women. This game hits especially hard for anyone who's had to deal with the dark sides of mental health "care."
I felt myself fairly immersed in the old ground of the hospital. The game does a good job with its art direction, captures the historic period (and the eventual decay) and does its job transporting the player mentally to another place and time. It has a handful of fun exploration moments.
There were a couple of moments that felt a little too "gazey" for me. This is a fictional story but really wrapped up in the non-fictional reality of this hospital, so it felt in poor taste. But I think you'd have to be particularly well-versed in those sorts of radical feminist nuances to even notice. If you're familiar with avant-garde art, you're probably aware of the stereotype of the "artistic" man who's a little too eager when it comes to rape depictions. This game is heavy though, don't play it if you don't have a close relationship with your triggers.
It's a psychological horror, but for some of us it'll feel more like an interactive visit to a museum. If you're the latter, I think this game is worth playing with that understanding in mind. I think overall, this game accomplishes its goal. It's not a typical "horror" experience though.
Ugly graphics.
Tedious gameplay
Slow movement.
Garbage controls.
Lack of optimization.
Boring story.
Garbage game tries to be dramatic.
Unfortunately it is not possible when game all of the above.
Long story short: it is not believable story.
Sensitive documents laying around construction site - not believable.
Controls are clunky.
Story - lame.
Audio recorded in few sessions - voice sound changes in the middle of the story telling.
I would say to younger myself not to spend time on this game - it does not worth the time.
Go play a better game instead.
Some guy said that he received two abuse and one punishment trading cards and he thinks that's a good description of this experience.
I want to applaud the sorrowful atmosphere of this game - keep in mind that you can end up feeling quite sad by the end of it. The developers seemed passionate about the theme they chose for their debut, and I always appreciate passion.
It's a little bit clunky and not all that interesting from a gameplay standpoint, overall it's definitely not my favorite "walking sim". But if you like this subgenre, you might want to give The Town of Light a try.
Very dark game... I mean they are fu@king doing lobotomy in game. It's definitely not for everyone.
It's very traumatizing but a very good story.

WARNINGS !!
- very traumatizing
I really wanted to like this game. I love walking sims and the fragmented narratives that come together in an often disordered way. So when in an article I saw this game lumped with other games I enjoy, I thought that it might be perfect for me. It wasn't.
The things that pushes a player forward in a successful walking sim are the questions "what happened to x?" or "how did we get to the present?". These games don't have the same fast-paced linnear narrative of a traditional story, but by answering these questions one loose fragment at a time - and not always in chronological order - they play on the tension that lies in that gap between knowing and not knowing. It's a difficult balance to strike, but it's one that games such as "Dear Esther" and "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" get right.
"The Town of Light", contrastingly, didn't get it right. It's pretty obvious from the start what's happened, and anyone who has studied the history of hysteria or recognises the name Charcot on the ayslum's exterior, will immediately know what kind of a story they're expecting. The narrator is a cliché representation of a childish madwoman (relies on a doll, scolds herself, vascilates between first and third person...etc.), so the unfolding of the character isn't much of a driving force either. I've seen other comments complain that it's long, and although I usually don't have a problem with that in games, on such a narratively stagnant one, the length plays against it.
Its such an intense story.
quite a few trigger warnings, just an fyi.
Glad i checked it out.
Boring, long, and exhausting.
Long story short: it is not believable story. Sensitive documents laying around construction site - not believable. Controls are clunky. Story - lame. Audio recorded in few sessions - voice sound changes in the middle of the story telling. I would say to younger myself not to spend time on this game - it does not worth the time.
