About the Game
Based on 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' by master of horror H.P. Lovecraft, and inspired by the classic gameplay of the early 90s' Lucasarts adventures, Chronicle of Innsmouth sets you on a path to discover the secrets of the cursed town of Innsmouth. The second chapter of this franchise, Mountains of Madness, will be available on Steam very soon – you can already Wishlist and follow it here. The story begins with a trip through New England. At the Newburyport station, you hear for the first time about the fishing town of Innsmouth – once a rich and thriving port, now a decadent forsaken place, surrounded by rumors about disappearances, hidden cults and all kinds of unspeakable horrors.
.
Moved by sheer curiosity, you decided to investigate the truth behind these odd stories. But Innsmouth and its inhabitants guard its secrets carefully – and the truth might be a burden too heavy for anyone's sanity. Investigate, gather information and solve enigmas and puzzles to get to the bottom of all the mysteries of Innsmouth – if you dare, for you may find answers you would have preferred not to hear.

Great point & click game with a lovely feel to it. There's a few moments in the late game where pixelhunting or trying every single option on the screen is required to find some needlessly obtuse answer, but that's very manageable still.
Voice-acting usually okay, sometimes quite bad. Pixel graphics fairly good. Music is bombastic and too much. The puzzles are okay, except for a couple of cheesies. The story is decent. This would be a recommend, except that as pretty much everyone else has said, near the end it devolves into completely aggravating and unnecessary timed events. Even though they're in the last 10 minutes of a several-hour game, I still considered quitting, because I knew what I wanted to do, but had to fight the interface every step of the way to do it, and this led to numerous unfair deaths.
These events, in less than 5% of the game, really do push it from a yes to a no. Shame, really.
3/10
Speech:
- over the top
- slow (15 min+ cutscene...)
- no fast forward clicking in cutscenes and a lot of dialogue lines
Graphics:
- very basic backgrounds and slightly better animation
- small high res sprites on 320x200 backgrounds look wrong
- some impossible puzzles b/c of bad game design
- lack of hints to point you in some direction
Story:
- I like Lovecraft, this one is just told in an unable fashion
- length would have been decent but I just stuck to the walkthrough to finish it fast
Overall:
- amateurish feel
- hotspots are very tight and hard to find
- takes tons of elements from Maniac Mansion, Indiana Jones and the last Crusade, Sierra (towards the end of the game you get to die a LOT) and especially Monkey Island but somehow there's not much else either. I love those old games and this one is a bad rip-off that took everything just a step back
+ the fact that the dev team is Italian: +1
Finished! Overall I really enjoyed it, especially the creepy story and atmosphere. There are a few annoying (and easy to fail) quicktime events near the end, but thankfully there is an easy mode that makes them much more bearable.
Too many cat hair mustache puzzles for a game with no written guide. Voice acting is good, the pixel art is well made and the writing is enjoyable. Good basics, frustrating gameplay. I'd play a sequel, but I'd pass on this.
It depicts the story in Lovecraft's Shadow over Innsmouth quite accurately, although of course lacking many of the details. Thankfully, the old drunkard Zadok is in it. The ending is also different from the original. Overall, it is an easy-ish point-and-click adventure game with some tense live-action sequences. One specific sequence mirrors the famous 'live action' part in the original story to a tee (you'll know what I mean if you've read it).
The game began as a very decent adventure, but near the end it devolved into QTE feeding frenzy at -20 AGI and -20 DEX modifiers. Such a shame.
I enjoyed the old-school style and the atmosphere. It's an homage to the author and to old point & click adventures. Also quite humorous for a game that is based on a Lovecraft novel. Made me go back to read the original. Extra credits for the kick-ass outro song they recorded for the game.
