Great game! Very interesting dynamic duo and the jokes are hilarious
This was a great fun detective & puzzle point & click game, with touch of humour. There are definitely supernatural element in it but it's not scary or spooky. The puzzles are logical and the characters will be saying something that will help, for example "I should find something sticky" so you'd need to find something sticky or check if you have already picked up something that can be sticky.
If you like - puzzle, detective, supernatural/occult, solving cases, comedy, and pixel art, then this game is for you!
I'm looking forward to playing A Fumble In The Dark. (A sequel to this game)
Love the humour
Somehow the perfect balance between goofy, spooky, funny, and eye-rolling at bad jokes, all to the tune of classic occult back drop. I really hope they make more games in the series, I can't get enough of the McQueen / Dooley banter!
Zany, fun, lowbrow; The Darkside Detective keeps churning out spoof after spoof of occult horror. Easy to become involved with, and surprisingly good for a game that keeps all aspects of its delivery uncomplicated. Polishing it up to sharpen that "edge" would definitely pull this game up to the next level. where it's not a fringe game people play out of curiosity. The Darkside Detective reminds me of computer games from my youth when I really, really enjoyed playing them. Rated 7 out of 10.
2 tropes i cannot stand in point and click puzzlers anymore:
1 popculture related references, DSD starts with that in the very first dialogue
2 trying so hard to be funny you feel bad for the game
Very funny and enjoyable detective click-and-point. The puzzles were fun, I enjoyed the plot and the characters. I was able to solve it all so it's likely too easy for a true puzzle fiend but worth it for the humour alone.
Playing this game brought joy into my cold and miserable existence. 10/10 would smooch Officer Dooley if game permitted
Witty and creative, one of the most fun games I've played yet
Love this game. Fun puzzles, a good story line, and great art. It was way more entertaining than I thought it would be and I look forward to playing the second one. A nice cozy, funny, paranormal detective game.
The game was fairly short and in most ways enjoyable. The puzzles were just difficult enough. There were only a few times where I felt like I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing, but even wandering around wasn't too bad.
What an enjoyable time travelling experience this point & click, pixel art, adventure game was - as I repeatedly laughed out loud at the very funny dialogue and plot scenarios, it was like being 30+ years younger and playing Monkey Island for the first time!
In The Darkside Detective, the main character, with his loyal, comically gullible, and ever-hungry uniformed police officer partner, must solve supernatural & occult-related crimes in the city of Twin Lakes. The game is a series of six main (and three bonus) short(-ish) cases which, though separate, have humorous references to each other, and many supporting characters in common; I really liked this episodic format.
Each case can be solved very quickly and relatively logically, but that would be to miss the joy of selecting all of the dialogue options, and clicking on all of the background items; I preferred to have a slow, thorough playthrough of each case, and then repeat it in a fast, abbreviated form for any achievement-related items or actions that I had missed the first time. The low resolution pixel art really suited the game, even to the extent that many comic references are made to it by the characters themselves.
Thoroughly recommended for lovers of old school point & click adventures, and for converting those who aren't sure about this kind of game yet...
A true gem. i love these.
Funny
Love the design and feel of the game. Puzzle solutions require a fair amount of out of the box thinking, to the point I had to look up the next step in a guide a couple of times because I worked out what the outcome needed to be but not how I could make it happen. But overall a very enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
Absolutely hilarious, old school point and click <3
A great little point & click romp. I love the pixel art and silly jokes. Good fun!
The Darkside Detective is one of my most favorite games that I have played. The pixel art is fun, and the story is hilarious and yet captivating. There are so many references in this game that it's like an easter egg hunt while playing it. Highly Recommend. 10/10 (Also, buy the second one as well. Just as funny with great story!)
9 cases. Takes about 6 hours to finish the whole game. Good humor, good puzzles. Would recommend, but especially on sale given how short it is.
Had an absolute blast playing this game.
It's reminding me of old comedy point and click adventure games that I used to play. I had fun, and I laughed/cringed at some of the references.
The only issue I ran into was that some of the optional achievements did not want to pop, even after I made sure to complete their tasks exactly.
Pretty cool and fascinating game with a unique story line and cool art style. Definitely give it a go if you like games like this.
I was sceptical on whether id enjoy the game since I'm not a massive fan of pixelated graphics, I'm glad to be proven wrong. In fact, id even go so far as to say the pixelated look adds to the aura/feel this game has. I enjoyed solving each case and particularly loved the dynamic and interactions with our police officer partner. The humour made me chuckle and roll my eyes on multiple occasions and really helped the overall feel to the game. A solid 9/10 from me.
Good atmosphere, music and humor.
Its a great pixel art game, plenty of puzzles and puns for a relaxing weekend with a 5-6 hour gameplay.
Pretty laid back point and click game with some hilarious dialogue and funny scene. It does the job well enough but not really excel at telling an amazing story since the whole game is just that the protagonists go through the cases one by one which is pretty short on its own. If you like early 21st centuries point and click flash games this might be your cup of tea, it exactly match the same vibe of said games.
Overall enjoyable short game.
Probably my favorite point 'n click series. Love the wacky stories, the nerdy jokes, the lovable characters. Can't wait till I've forgotten most of it and can play it again.
Fun little puzzle game. Had some good laughs, ready to play the next one!
I, D!ck Brickman, bought this on a boredom whim and was pleasantly surprised by how much I, D!ck Brickman, enjoyed it.
I'm not an achievement hunter, but definitely enjoyed being rewarded for being an exploratory idiot. This game has some of that unhinged LucasArts energy behind it for sure when it comes to the creative puzzle solving. I really enjoyed the simple humor, the fourth wall breaking, the characters, and the idea that you get to play in 2 reverse worlds w/ occasional character splits. It's even one of those games where the credits are immensely entertaining. Definitely a perfect day off from work treat and I'll have to go check out the devs and publishers for any other titles.
UDPATE: Beyond pleased to find out there's a second game in the series.
A delightful point&click detective adventure with atmospheric tracks that fit the spooky setting!
The writing is consistently witty, with clever dialogue that pokes fun at classic horror tropes while keeping the tone light-hearted. The banter between McQueen and Dooley provides much of the game's charm, with Dooley’s goofy personality perfectly balancing McQueen’s straight-faced skepticism.
The game is full of unique sense of humor and charm. Can wholeheartedly recommend
A fun point-and-click puzzle game that I found hard to put down once I began. The characters and world are charming (and strange) and fun to interact with. Each case you solve is it's own contained story, eventually leading up to the final case.
The last three cases are available for the player to begin whenever and are marked as bonus, but include characters that are introduced in other cases that come before. The final case is also clearly intended to be played last. While you can play these cases whenever you want, you should probably play them in order.
Absolutely hilarious!!! The puzzles are challenging but not frustratingly so, and there are several cases with very different storylines and locations. I'd pay good money just for the jokes. By the middle of the third case, I was looking up the next game in the series to buy on Steam. Clever and satisfying.
I loved playing this!
Had an absolute blast with this game. The dialogue is quick and clever, and the pixel art design fits the vibes fantastically. The bite sized cases are engaging and snappy, and while occasionally the puzzles slide slightly into backtracking time-wasting territory it's not nearly enough to ruin the overall package. Has been an excellent cozy spooky adjacent game for the Halloween season.
A very nice game.
It's funny, it can make you laugh out loud from time to time, it has many comedic references about pop culture and about general knowledge, It has a nice atmosphere about mystery and the paranormal, and all of this in a pixel art that feels very original.
The difficulty is fairly low, though, the puzzles can get quite easy and straightforward, so, don't play this if your objective is to go for a tough challenge.
Overall a great game! The puzzles varied in difficulty which kept things interesting, but the best thing about this game was its humor! Honestly one of the funniest games I have played in a long time!
It's not the most challenging adventure but it sure was fun.
Definitely on the goofy side, rather than the spooky side. That's not a bad thing, it is reminiscent of older point and click games. Not a lot of staying power, but a fun time.
The puzzles, the cases and the characters are all too simple and uninteresting. There is no story. The jokes aren't funny, the dialogue isn't good and the the view is uncomfortably close up.
I wanted to like this game, I really did. Unfortunately, the writing is unbearable. There's nothing to the characters, and the jokes are uninspired. I enjoy point and click games; it's the genre I primarily play. This game was tedious and the lack of character and world building made the puzzle solving devoid of meaning. I couldn't finish it. I'm constantly searching for the high I experienced playing Kathy Rain for the first time. If you are on a similar quest, don't waste your time or money here. I really don't understand what people saw in this.
Fun and entertaining! Join Detective McQueen and Officer Dooley in solving cases of the supernatural events in Twin Lake.
P.S. Do not trust the moon, an obstruction of justice!
This game is by far one of the worst detective games ever, the plots are so childish and predictable.
do not waste your time playing it i refunded it (also it took me 23 minutes to solve a case).
Great story, is a peak of comedy with just a little bit of terror
Welcome to the Darkside. We have cookies. Well, we had until someone ate them.
Usually games that involve the supernatural are considered quite hard to penetrate because of their shocking images, dense plot, and oppressive atmosphere that might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Adventure games also have the reputation of being hard to grasp, with logic puzzles that coined the term “moon logic” because it is so out there only a lunatic can grasp. But what about mixing both and throwing the dread out of the window and wrapping it all with some witty humor and puzzles that you don’t need a PhD in out-of-the-box thinking? That’s where The Darkside Detective comes.
Conceived during a Jam, the developers Spooky Doorway crafted six cases (and three bonuses) that are bite-sized self-contained short adventures, each hardly over an hour long to solve even in a relaxed pace.
Detective Francis McQueen is a detective of the Darkside Division of the Twin Lakes City police department, who always gets dispatched with the strangest cases along with his partner, police officer Dooley – who is quite the himbo.
The retro style can bring memories of old titles, like Simon the Sorcerer, the Secret of Monkey Island, or even the King’s Quest series, with charming and colorful visuals. Thankfully the game has modern sensibilities, so the simple visuals also reflect a simpler and snappier gameplay and take the term “point-and-click” quite literally. Anything highlighted has a commentary from McQueen and there isn’t any of the dreaded pixel hunting to nitpick every last screen. It is a literal love letter to the classics of the genre and also a nice introduction for those who never played one but always wanted to try it out.
The music grants some gravitas to the game, creating a spooky atmosphere that is inspired by horror classics and can give a certain air of mystery and tension without being overbearing and complimenting the visuals along with the story.
Everything about this game is a work of love for adventures and classics like the X-Files and Twin Peaks, the banter between McQueen and Dooley is always a treat to witness and it can get even wittier when they interact with many of the other characters, some even recurring ones. The short duration of the stories make sure they never over stay their welcome and places the duo in a number of different situations brimming with creativity. The absurdity of the situations lean to the comedy and unexpected punchlines.
After the release of the game the developers added three more cases along with a teaser to the follow up, The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark. One of these extra cases is actually much shorter than the others, closer to a mini-scenario similar to the free-roaming in Case 6 of the main game, but the others are along the same length of the main story.
The Darkside Detective is a charming game, full of personality and it is clear the dedication and care present in every screen. Give it a chance and enjoy the ride.
A very bare-bones point'n'click adventure with unappealing visuals and lazy puzzle design, but with a great soundtrack.
The bargain bin dialogue with its unfunny, tired quips ruins everything - the game feels like it's written by a teenager as their first attempt at comedy, after studying their favorite material but failing to understand what makes it work.
It tries so hard, but referencing other, better works just isn't enough.
The fourth wall is constantly under attack, too, with the characters winking at and elbow nudging the player at every turn.
If enduring your way through tired, amateurish attempts at humor is your cup of tea, go for it.
I love the humor in this game. A nice little game to just relax and smile with.
good game
I forgot to do a review for this, I feel terrible as I played it years ago.
So, um.... play this game immediately.
It is life changing. Or at least fun.
fun to play with friends and make funny voices
such a classic. love both the games in this series! they both have so much attention to detail and are, surprisingly, really funny. i could play a hundred of these
