Love seeing those childhood games on steam. Would 100% recommend.
I downloaded it to have a relaxing game that does not require thinking about too much as not always I want a brain workout: it does the job pretty well. Since it is a time management game, you need to be very focused and plan your next moves and upgrades, yet it is not too taxing on the grey cells and it relaxes me. The challenge is to get the golden reward for best time, which in the last levels is close to impossible for me!!
Game Information
"Island Tribe" is a Strategy game. The game was developed by Realore Studios and published by Qumaron.
"Island Tribe" is the first episode of "Island Tribe."
The Game Review
Game Visuals
I want to mention that the visuals in the game are well done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game's option menu.
Game Audio
I want to mention that audio for the game is well done. Even though the audio is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. The audio can be adjusted in the game's option menu as well.
Gameplay
This is a time strategy game, where careful planning is required, due to the limited amount of resources that are available.
There are three different difficulty game modes to choose from: Normal; Multi-task; Relaxed. The difference between these difficulty game modes are: Timer Speed and Scoring. The normal mode, the timer speed and scoring is low. The multi-task mode, the timer speed and scoring are moderately high. The relaxed mode, the timer speed is frozen and scoring is moderately high.
There are three different chapters with thirty levels in total. All levels can be replayed for better scoring and star rating.
All levels have a three star rating system. The stars are earned from playing the game. The star rating system represents how fast the level has been completed. Three Stars (Gold;) Two Stars (Silver;) One Star (Bronze.) There is an opportunity to replay levels for better star rating.
There are several different special power ups to help complete the level faster. These special bonus power ups come with a time limit. But they can be used again after they have been recharged overtime.
There are twenty-three sets of different achievements that can be unlocked from playing the game. Each of these achievements does come with some requirements that need to be completed before they can be unlocked. These achievements are in-game only.
Miscellaneous
Final thoughts: I have found the game enjoyable to a certain extent. The replay value for the game is low. I would recommend this game, but not at the game's full price value.
This one doesn't quite make the grade. It's mostly inoffensive, though the fog-of-war doesn't really work and the random disasters do get annoying. You can queue up worker options infinitely, but you can't UN-queue anything. The multi-step generators (needing water from the well to grow grain) are interesting, but some of the combinations are odd. (Why do you need cotton to get wool?) The final deal-breaker was that if you complete the last level, it automatically restarts the map on a higher difficulty (with NO warning), so no going back and golding earlier levels. Hopefully, the series improves. Recommended only for die-hards and connoisseurs.
Bright side: it runs great on Steamplay.
Cheap game. Took 90 minutes to play, and was bored yet determined about 1/2 way thru.
May be better as a cheap time filler for someone between 6-9?
i rarely review time management games (or anything really) but i played quite a lot of these and most of the time i can get some joy out of them. lets see island tribe which mostly offered frustration for my time and money.
the good
-well, cute graphics
-enjoyable music, neither too special
-you can view the map to some degree at the start (some of these games dont let you) - still, fog of war
-you cant "paint yourself in a corner"
the bad
-fog of war. in this genre you usually plan ahead, which is hard to do if you cant see ahead
-the costs and gains are not constant
-random? scripted? catastrophes which ruin your plans
-only 30 maps (competition boast 50-60)
the ugly
-level 29 might be completed in gold time, however i cant imagine how
-i completed the last level twice on gold somehow the game doesnt register it, trying to start the level again->error, quit the desktop
-1024x768 resolution, still, quite common in the genre
-no steam achievements
id say avoid UNLESS its very, very cheap or part of a bundle AND you played through most other time management games.
the hercules series is a classic of course but my favourites (despite some of the technical problems) are probably the weather lord and moai games and meridian, all offering you something extra to the usual gameplay. some other worth mentioning: new yankee, incredible dracula, northern tale, the musketeers, rush for gold, tribloos, viking brothers, ballad of solar, legends of atlantis, alicia quatermain, gnomes garden, the tiny tale... some of these nothing special but still (much) better than this one.
id also steer clear of the rescue team and gardens inc series.
btw i liked northern tale (mentioned above) and especially all my gods from the same developer (the latter not a time management game).
a small update: by now i have played 2 viking saga games, demigod, a roads of rome title and northern tale from realore, ALL much better than this one, and all quite enjoyable, some of them introducing some fun new elements to the genre. dont hate the developer, hate the game.
Island Tribe is a time management game, where you assign one or more villagers to one task after another, either picking up a resource (wood, stone, water, wool, honey, milk, etc.), building or repairing a structure using these resources, or shooing away a wild animal with food resources. The map starts in a fog, and is gradually uncovered as you move along the paths, completing tasks. Each level has different end goals, and there are approximately 40 levels. There is a time limit, but nothing happens if it runs out, beyond losing a score bonus, and all but the end levels are too easy to worry about anyway.
I would describe this as an overly easy time management game for people who hate time management games.
nice game, good idea.
Not an overly complicated game but it's quite fun. Yes, there isn't much chance of failing but sometimes after playing more in-depth games it's nice to play a straightforward one. I enjoy resource management games and am not too bothered about the difficulty level. Hoping to see other versions of Island Tribe available on Steam soon too.
I love time management games and have had this game since big fish games.. I got it again. for that person that says you can't fail because tehre is no time limit they obviously didn't play it on the right play level. And for what the guy said about fog so you can't strategize before hand, well that is part of the challenge! this game isn't a math problem, it's a time managment challenge... it's not laid out easy for you. but very doable.
Rather dull time management game with poor level design. Everything's hidden by a fog of war and has to be gradually revealed, and the amount of resources needed for building and upgrading is arbitrary and unpredictable, so it's impossible to strategize beforehand. But it's also impossible to fail. There's no time limit, just high scores and gold times, but the map doesn't show at a glance which levels you've beaten the gold times for and which you've utterly failed, so you wouldn't know which ones to replay even if you wanted to. If you're looking for a better game with a similar theme, try MOAI instead.
Sure, I'll recommend this game.
Ah, c'mon... it is cute! The cost and content are equivalent to a Happy Meal, the kiddies will learn a bit of hand/eye coordination, the graphics are nice, the audio will not drive you batty and there a tiny bit of easy reading involved.
As an added bonus... I have yet to see any nudity, simulated violence or death.
:)
