A lot of the reviews mention invisible traps, unfortunately for this game's review score, while they've since updated it with patches to fix that, the top reviews haven't reflected that change.
So I just wanted to post this one review to let people know you can set traps to visible in the options menu, or play with invisible traps if you like the thrill.
Now for an actual review, if you've played the original One Way Heroics, this is more of the same. If you haven't, well, this is a spin on a traditional roguelike.
Just like the original, there's a simplistic hunger system(energy, but you can't die from not eating, just severely weakened at 0 energy), weight/inventory management, and of course tile-based turn based combat. The spin is the same, the player is forced to move east as the screen is slowly consumed from the west.
I'll mostly compare this to the original OWH. I think there's a lot more variety in this game compared to the original, for better or worse.
Player classes feel like they have a bit more variety now, for better or worse. The noncombat classes I feel are worse off in combat compared to the original, but their support abilities do feel stronger. There's a pretty large number of classes now compared to the original, I especially liked the Samurai class for their unique skill that became stronger every time it was used.
On the continued topic of variety, for better or worse, I feel like this game is much harder, partially due to the increased enemy variety. There's a lot more threatening enemy types you can potentially encounter early on, and a lot of interesting boss type monsters that weren't in the original. A notable change, golems and dragon monsters are 2x2 tiles in this game, compared to the 1x1 monsters in the original, which lets you manouever around the environment when dealing with these enemy types in different ways compared to the original.
Even more on the topic of variety, there's quite a few different NPC companions compared to the original. Some of them do feel quite weak to me, and some quite strong. Compared to the original though, I do feel like there's less charm to these NPCs, and they do feel less unique. On the flipside, I do believe they are generally easier to recruit in this game.
EVEN MORE on the variety, there's a lot of new items and even equipment classes. I was especially happy to see the Fist type weapons in this game, something sadly lacking in the original.
More on the gameplay, there's an odd Versus mode in this game that I've only tried minimally, it seems to be an odd asynchronous 1v1 adventure where you occasionally fight a copy of your opponent.
The music was nice, but unfortunately there's a relatively small number of tracks in this compared to the original - but that's to be expected since the original OWH just uses hundreds of freeware tracks, this game has unique BGM. And on the continued topic of audio, though I forgot to mention it at the companion section, but this game has voiced lines for a lot of the companion dialogues.
Visual wise, it definitely looks a lot more polished here, both in sprite art and portrait art. Though I do have an issue with the screen layout, it feels a bit crunched for space vertically in comparison to the original.
Speaking of screen layouts, the UI in this isn't optimal, it's definitely showing as a PC port of a console game, and lacking in customization options for certain buttons.
While you may see some comments about it being 30FPS and how that may seem strange for a turn based game, it definitely feel a bit sluggish in responsiveness of controls, especially when compared to the original OWH.
This game likes to go on sale fairly often these days, I would definitely recommend people to pick this up and give it a shot.
Less good than One way heroics plus but still very fun. Too bad about the 30fps lock but you kinda get used to it after a few minutes. Fun stuff!
I just did a saveles run to 10000km for the title benifits, and if you so much as make a single mistake the game screws you over, if you exit out it screws you over if you die after saving it screws you over, and heaven forbid it does what happened to me and crashes after you clear, preventing you from adding anything to your dream vault, recording the clear, and deleting the progression of what was a 5 hour run... man screw this
Bummed out that I avoided this title for so long, I enjoyed the first entry in the series a whole lot too. Great game, feels like I am replaying the first all over again.
