def one of my favorite experiences. super aesthetic, good puzzles, and easter eggs in easter eggs in easter eggs.
Pony Island is an awesome, creepy, wonderful experience. If any of the preview video looks interesting then just buy it. You won't be sorry.
Pony Island is one of those games that completely caught me off guard, in the best way possible. When I first started playing, I thought, “Oh, this is going to be a cute, simple game about ponies.” But within minutes, it flipped everything on its head and became this dark, mind-bending experience that had me hooked. I loved how it constantly broke the fourth wall and made me feel like I was part of something bigger than just playing a game.
The puzzles were clever, and the way it messed with my expectations was brilliant—like when it pretends to crash or manipulates the interface. It’s not really about gameplay mechanics as much as it’s about the story and the weird, unsettling vibe it creates. Honestly, it felt like a conversation with the game itself, which is such a rare thing to experience.
It’s not for everyone, it’s weird, chaotic, and doesn’t hold your hand, but that’s exactly why I loved it. It’s one of those games that sticks with you long after you finish it because it’s so different and unapologetically strange. If you’re into games that challenge how you think about gaming itself, Pony Island is a must-play.
Legendary little horror game that showed the dev prowess of Daniel Mullins long before he created Inscryption
It knows what it is, it's almost tongue in cheek more than it is outright "creepy", but keeping that attitude allows for a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. The puzzles are fun, but aren't too intrusive, and the achievements are all fairly easy to get.
Also, Louie is actually pretty creepy in the parts of the game where he's just staring at the player.
7/10
Not good! It is actually one of the very few games I regret playing.
This might sound a bit harsh, but hear me out. The core idea of this game is decent enough, but the gameplay was bland and the story was not interesting. I was so bored after only 30min! Since I always give games a fair chance and I knew this was a short game, I did a full playthrough anyway.
So what specifically didn't I like? Well, lets take a look;
- Platforming; Was ok in the very start, but I quickly became tired of it. It is so incredibly barebone basic. I didn't expect a regular platformer game, but I was hoping for a little more depth. Mid-game this also became frustrating and annoying. Like it was trying to make things hard for you, but not in a good challenging way.
- Puzzles; Actually somewhat original and I liked that it was represented as code (well, kinda), however... the puzzle mechanics were clunky and there were just too much of the same thing, so I quickly lost interest.
- Conversations; Watching text slowly "being typed" on the screen while listening to the annoying typing sound effect.
- Story; Didn't care for it. Boring and very forgettable. It only managed to capture my attention the first 30min. or so.
On the positive side, there was this one little thing later in the game that startled me real good. I'm not going to spoil anything, since it sadly was the best thing in the whole game.
Conclusion; The game was neither fun, scary or interesting. It was just slow, bland and annoying.
Pony Island is good. Quite good, actually. It's short and sweet; doesn't overstay its welcome, just does what it wants to do and gets out. I respect Mullins' ability to stay concise, and this is on great display here. The game can get pretty heavy-handed with its campy brand of humor and attempts to creep you out by breaking the fourth wall and such, but there are equally as many cool moments created by this (the Steam friend thing had my jaw on the floor). The narrative is pretty straightforward (haunted arcade machine), but I was pleasantly surprised to see more mature themes like creative worth tackled. And on the visual and technical side of things, this game is a dream. I think something like Inscryption reaches higher heights than Pony Island, but this is an undeniably tight experience, and makes me very excited to see what Pony Island 2 has in store.
And, ironically enough, Pony Island would actually have been a pretty fun arcade game.
7/10
I played Inscryption before this, and it would probably have been more impressive if it was the other way around. Still, this is a truly excellent subversion of expectations. The less you know the better it gets. Short and focused. Can't wait to play to recently announced sequel.
This game is my least favorite of the Daniel Mullins games. I almost put that I did not recommend it, as I am on the fence about it. The ending is the only reason I would recommend it. The game is tedious and repetitive, but it has a good story, which is why I kept playing. I did not like the puzzles. I don't want to spoil anything, which makes it hard to review these games, but I can say The Hex and Inscryption definitely top this game. If you like those two games, I would definitely give this one a shot, especially when it's so cheap on sale. It took me around three hours of gameplay to beat it, and the last part of it somewhat makes it worth it to play the rest. Not the best game, not the worst.
I've heard people gush about this game for years and diligently avoided spoilers as best I could so I could go in blind and get the full experience. But that was a wasted effort. It's just another low budget "haunted" game, with are annoying and tedious puzzles. I don't understand why everyone made such a big deal about it. It wasn't the first 'haunted' game, right? 9 isn't that long ago, right?
Should have expected it to go the way it went but still got surprised. Love these kinda games.
already watched a playthrough of it years ago but i bought it on steam in the Daniel Mullins Bundle just because
amazingly fun and goofy, with awesome puzzles and mystery throughout
If hell was a computer, you're about to hack it. Simple and short but thoroughly entertaining and well worth a purchase.
really good and worth the money the game is short but really immersive and fun
Shi got me stress but holy, this is underrated despite being release in 2016 or something, this is probably my very first indie horror game I ever play, 10/10
Incredible game, sound track is excellent, vibes are cultivated.
11/10, totally worth the money, would definitely recommend.
Very fun and kid approved! Plus, extra challenges and more fun. My kids especially love the ponies!
i played this game for an undergraduate horror class. very short game (took me about 1.5 hours to finish) with mild platforming and puzzle-solving. very quirky wit if you're into that kind of humor.
unreasonably good for how cheap it is, very worth the time, fun and interesting and engaging in so many ways
Interesting, but ultimately not enjoyable to play.
Pony Island is a deceptively simple yet mind-bending masterpiece that blends clever puzzles, meta-narrative, and haunting secrets into a uniquely unforgettable experience. Daniel Mullins, the brilliant mind behind Inscryption, showcases his talent as a solo developer, crafting a game that breaks the fourth wall and defies expectations. It’s a stunning example of indie creativity, with beautiful art and ingenious design that every puzzle and narrative enthusiast should experience.
Dazzlingly smart and laugh out loud funny. If you like this then you NEED to check out Mullins' other games, especially The Hex.
A perculiar little puzzle game cycling a few different types of puzzle, but doing its best to keep things fresh and varied with one of the best examples of 'this game is cursed' stylings I've seen. Didn't wear out its welcome.
Light horror game about a person playing a game about ponies. Cute and fun gameplay with a lot of meta humor. The platforming and puzzles are simple but introduce enough mechanics to stay fresh throughout the game. Total playtime is around 2-3 hours. Great soundtrack and graphics. Interesting story concept and execution. If you are playing this after Inscryption you can definitely see where the inspiration of that game came from. If you have somehow not played Inscryption I would definitely recommend playing it after this game.
interesting psychological horror very much in the vain of creepypasta.
gameplay can be fairly enjoyable, though not always engaging. some moments will definitely catch you offguard.
if you are interested in 100% completion/secrets i would just recommend searching for a guide. even with an "act select" system by which you can hop between different sections of the game, getting back to a point where you missed a collectible can be overly tedious, and with how hidden some of the secrets can be you may have to return to specific points and play through the same segment multiple times
all in all, fun and interesting way to kill a few hours for cheap
Nice psychological horror game. It does some neat tricks and it's best to go in blind for the best experience.
It is a bit short, but it's also pretty cheap so you can't go wrong with that.
My first Daniel Mullins game and not disappointed at all, the soundtrack is masterful, complete it 100%
What a treasure of a game, it was not what I was expecting as I bought the game knowing nothing about it. My friend recommended it and they were right. Game plays like a horror puzzle game and it has engaging puzzles, a deep/mysterious story, and a few crazy plot twits. I won't say more for fear of spoiling, for the price tag this game is a no brainier if you like the indie horror puzzle genre.
played this after playing Inscryption, blew my mind and is honestly underrated. for anyone who especially enjoyed the surprises Inscryption gave them will love this as well, you wont regret your purchase!
Extremely creative! Play this if you want something that breaks with the usual tropes and common practices of video games. This is the pinnacle of a great indie gem. The art style works great as a story telling tool. Some puzzles make you feel like you have an IQ of >200, but some puzzles and platformer levels feel needlessly prolonged. That's not a big issue as the game is quite short, so you won't feel too bored. Strong recommendation to see something different in game design.
You are a pony on an island. Great game but I ended up uninstalling it tho.
10/10
Have you ever played the Impossible Quiz as a kid? This game is basically that but instead of it being fun and quirky questions you are trying to escape a virtual world
Came from Inscryption. This game did not disappoint. It's short, yes, but I'd rather be left wanting more than leave a game feeling tired of it. Started The Hex last night as well. All hail the OLD_DATA
incredible story, really fun and replayable.
Not done with it yet but the gameplay is really fun considering how simple it is. Bought it because I love inscryption and it is really great so far.
Really fun game with so many weird moments! Very unique experience!
A cute game for casual gamers about ponies in their natural habitat. Simple as that. Fun and relaxing cute experience.
Quality puzzle game with great music and a very immersive world
It's a meta-game based on ponies that looks like an Atari 2600 title. The story is easy to follow, the game has a lot of creative coding bits and it constantly throws the player for a loop, forcing them to pay attention. With that said there are some "looping" puzzles that are kind of like altering code that are just repeated way too often and get annoying near the end of the game. Overall pretty fun but the platform/combat sequences could be a little more challenging and the game play in general is nothing special.
Due to playing Inscryption on Switch, I decided to go back and check out some of the older games by the game's creator - this is a short game, but incredibly engaging and enjoyable. I fear saying more than this would spoil, and as many before me have noted - it is a game best played as blind as possible to engage with it and see it for yourself. Will definetely be looking forward to the eventual sequel, had a fun time.
I went in blind, without any expectations. I'm not even sure what to say. I have nothing to compare this game to.. It's a unique experience that will undoubtedly leave lasting memories for everyone who plays it.
It's short, not too difficult, surprisingly fun at times, and occasionally a bit slow. The game offers a mix of storytelling, basic gameplay, surprises, puzzles, hidden stuff, cool music, and unexpected moments. Overall, it's a good game, especially for the price.
I recommend it if you're looking to try something new.
Play this game blind. 666
Fairly simple game with a lot of secrets to find. Recommended if you've played Mullins' other games, this wasn't very difficult to beat or 100% and it's quite fun.
A game that playfully breaks many, many boundaries of what you think the rules are of computer games.
this is game is probably better than most triple A game titles nowdays, it is absolutely worth 5euros
Pony Island is an experience I highly recommend. Although it's a relatively short game that you can finish in an afternoon, its originality and clever fourth-wall-breaking moments make it memorable. This distinctive style is common in Daniel Mullins Games. Plus, the price is very reasonable, even outside of sales, considering the quality of the experience it offers. If you're looking for a game that challenges your expectations and surprises you at every turn, Pony Island is an excellent choice
Honestly not sure what exactly I was expecting with Pony Island, but I'm pleasantly surprised as to how fun this hellish Pony adventure turned out! The overall aesthetics are great, and I adore the pixel vibe the game has, it's honestly just satisfying to look at. The gameplay is simple yet sweet, with some decently fun puzzles thrown in there as well. The soundtrack is also absolutely amazing, really adding to everything the game brings to the table.
I will say that the game places its "ooo demons" shtick a bit too on the nose at times that it can come across as quite campy. I think the overall lore suffers a bit because of the focus on the ARG (particularly if you aren't really into that sort of thing), but the plot of the game still remains decently clear to a player going in blind.
Overall, Pony Island ultimately thrives on being a short fun experience which doesn't overstay its welcome, and I think it succeeds in that to a pretty good degree. 8.5/10.
my friend said this was a good game but its trash, not enough tits
A fun game for a long evening or for the weekend. A little bit nerdy, but it should be fine for everyone really. I really liked some of the easter eggs and mechanics.
I loved this game as a kid! Unlocking the achievements, finding hidden tickets, seeing my game "break" 🤭 was too much fun! I hope the second game is just as fun!
