It is a a very easy and ok HO game, but nothing more. What sticks out is the mechanic that you have to find always objects hidden directly in the scene itself. Unfortunately you often see these objects directly, but are not allowed to collect them as you have not yet triggered the riddle around them.
A very dull Hidden Object Game. There are better ones out there.
You know, I didn't know The Puppet Thief had a sequel, and when I got this the Brothers Grimm characters didn't seem familiar. I had to go back and look at the first game again, and while you are a [i]detective of the Brothers Grimm[i], they're not actually in the first game. They are in the second game, and I like that they are characters here. With that cleared up though, let me talk about the rest of the game.
The first thing I noticed right away was how different the inventory works in this game, and I was actually pretty excited to play with this slightly different mechanic. In this game, when you interact with a part of a scene that requires an specific item, a tab is added to your inventory with an icon of that item. If you click on that tab, the inventory will show all the items needed to make this larger, main item, and it will display which ones you have collecting by fading ones that you still don't have yet. You can find some of these pieces in hidden object puzzles, but you can also find them within the scenes themselves. I really liked this system, it felt refreshing to try something new and I also liked that it gave you an idea of what you're looking for. In some hidden object puzzle games there are some unusual or unintuitive combinations for items and the scenes that require them. Here, the game already tells you what you need and lets you go and get it without needed to collect a bunch of items and then guess which one is the right item to use for something.
That being said, there were much less hidden object puzzle games in this than in traditional games like these. There were also puzzles, but I didn't find them particularly involved or difficult.
The story was fine, it was understandable and there are a lot of characters that you come across. It wasn't my favorite hidden object puzzle game story, but it wasn't my least favorite either, it was serviceable. Music was OK, fit the theme but nothing super memorable. The art style is old school but in a more charming way than in a bad way. It looks the part of a classic 2D point and click adventure game.
There are collectibles, and to my knowledge there is no indicator on the HUD to tell you if there is one in the scene you are looking at, but to their credit I found the collectibles fair to find and I got them all in your playthrough without needed to consult a guide and play through another time. I was also able to play on casual mode though since there is no achievement in this game for completing it on expert mode, which I appreciated.
There is a bonus adventure that is basically more story after the main story ends, which was fine, but one thing to note is that puzzles and hidden object puzzles within the bonus adventure count towards the total for the achievements, so you need to do all of them in both the main game and the bonus adventure without skipping or using hints in order to earn that. I did not have any technical issues with the game.
I think overall if I had one criticism of this game it's that it seemed like the enhancements to the inventory, the extra characters, the changes to how things worked that I found refreshing seemed to whittle down the puzzles and hidden object puzzles. I found this game to be very casual, so if you want a hidden object adventure that's even more laid back than normal, this game would be a good match for you.
Welp... It looks cool and has some neat stuff, but the puzzles are baby level easy! Maybe this one was intended more for kids? If I remember correctly... The first game is rather challenging... Guess they wanted a different audience to play their game this time around.
Also, this game is different from a regular H.O.G/First game. You find an area... Then whatever item it wants? You have to find pieces of that item.
The problem? Some items are extremely hard to see in the environment and by the time you make it to third world... You may be falling asleep. Sigh.
Hidden objects kept me awake and two guys didn't look so bad... So I got through it.
Then the Bonus game came up AND WOAH! It was FUN! I was like... YEAH!!! This is what I expected and immediately woke up.
The mini games were still a breeze though... Oh well.
Uh and also? This game doesn't give a damn about you getting Collectibles. SINCE WHEN?! Then why am I going to collect them?! I did so accidentally anyway!!!
I don't really want to fail this game... It's rather simple and can waste you nearly three hours... It's not THAT bad...
But if you do play it? Only the Bonus Game is really fun... Because it reminds me of the first game and how it should've been...!
