I was able to beat the game in 6 hours. Might go for all the achievements next
bugged, unplayable
Mid but I still managed to enjoy it.
TENTATIVE RECOMMENDATION. If I recall correctly I had to restart the game because I grabbed item A before item B. That said I was able to get all the achievements. I recommend the game on the assumption that (1) you look at the guides to locate the items before you play so you don't have to restart, and (2) you bought on discount.
A wonderful HO game packed with action and mystery. There's this artefact everybody wants to get their hands on it, there's the protagonist's fiancee who has been framed, there's this masked man that's after the artefact and there's you, the protagonist, a lady lawyer who is willing to go on this strange mission to free your fiance from custody. It's a long journey ahead with awkward situations that will test both strength and skills. Are you willing to throw away your usual life plans for a week of adventure?
PROS:
- Beautiful scenes;
- Nice music;
- Interesting story;
- Journal and fast-travelling map;
- Logical puzzles;
- Varied HO games;
- Trading cards;
- Obtainable achievements.
CONS:
- No voice-acting;
- After putting an item inside something, there's this luminous effect that's pretty annoying.
So far, a great experience. I am yet to finish the game. It doesn't seem to have a bonus chapter, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I prefer games that keep the flow running. Rather than breaking the action into two parts, the main game and the bonus chapter, I'd like a long game. Say, what do you prefer?
This one has a lot of the issues you see in HOPs, particularly those that were translated. Some items have very regional names, other times there are hidden object items that match multiple things (specific lightbulb on a string of lightbulbs). The script for the story has errors, there are many items that would work but you aren't allowed to use (can't use the pickaxe to hook an item out of reach under a log, have to get a different hook item and come back)
Yes, I recommend.
This felt a lot like New York Mysteries games which are some of my favorites.
Good hint/skip feature, map/fast travel, journal keeps clues & story line.
The game and puzzles had a good logic flow.
Time travel.
It's not a bad game, especially if you get it on sale, however there are bugs. Visual bugs, hit box issues, nonsensical tool usage. So, fairly standard for a budget HOG. Big issue is two game breaking bugs near the mid and end of the game, so if you do buy this on sale make sure to check the achievements guide because the top of it mentions these bugs without spoiling much of the game.
Further critique: There's no voice acting, which is a shame. Some of the objects have odd word choices. A kayak being labeled a "boat" and a pretzel a "croissant" or even an oil can labeled as a "funnel." The worst by far is clicking on a peacock feather to cross off "ostrich feather." The main bug I came across was trying to enter the hangar for the first time the game telling me "there's nothing past here." But after checking the map and clicking the hangar, I was teleported there. I left and reentered like nothing happened and didn't get that bug again.
Music was fine and average for a HOG. Cursor was a bit slow and the animations like puzzle completion light ups/ effects were also slow. Especially having to watch each totem be put in the box and then having to exit the box screen to keep playing. Overall plot was interesting, though I think the title is rather misleading compared to the actual game plot.
Giving this a thumbs down so buyers are aware of the big bug issues outlined above before buying.
An ordinary lawyer rushes into a mystical adventure to get his lover out of false accusations of murder.
Pros:
- + Puzzle
- + Achievements
- + Simple controls
- + Suitable for players of all ages
Minuses:
- - Freezes
- - Bugs
[*]- Wrong localization
Total:
A crazy story, riddled with magic and plot blunders. To save her beloved from justice, the heroine will go through several time periods - helping lost souls.
The game has pixel hunting, in connection with which at times it is not clear what to do and where to go. Many locations are blocked for a while without notifying the player about it. Why does the player start searching in blocked locations - forgets that you can return to other times.
I recommend this game to casual gamers of all ages. But it is worth preparing for the fact that many things will be called not what you need to find ...
Terrible.
Game breaking bugs (multiple), puzzles with the WRONG instructions and hidden object puzzles that ask you to find the wrong thing. They have a map but it's hard to use. You also don't get the achievement for completing the entire game if you use a SINGLE hint at any time, including out in the open outside of puzzles. There's also no witches or warlocks.. so even the title is misleading.
This whole thing was a MESS. Absolutely do NOT recommend.
Okay...I have never played a game that would give you a puzzle to guess what the correct answer is in that puzzle instead of giving you a hint...and YES I am talking about the area with the house in SPOILER ALERT!!! You have to guess what the combination on the house lock is and they do not give you a clue as to what in the heck it is....I mean hours and hours of trying to figure that freakin lock out until finally I said screw it and looked it up and that is ridiculous this game needs a huge over hall and who ever is beta testing or game testing this game needs to be fired seriously some puzzles make no sense and some areas you are left with this whole I have no idea which direction they want to me go in but ok geezzzz don't waste your money or your time.
Bug-ridden incomprehensible mess. Only playable with a walkthrough at your side at all times, warning you about game breaking bugs in advance and helping you make some sort of "sense" of it all (thank you anrkyuk!). Wth is the story about? Why is the title what it is? Who the f gives a s_it about a little girl ghost wanting a doll when you've just crashed and nearly died?! Things like translation errors can be forgiven in certain instances but certainly not in Hidden Object Scenes when you're looking for specific items. I bought it at 90% off for 0,49 Euro and it's still not worth it. It's just... atrocious.
If I could give 51% to 'just' give a thumbs up then that'd be my rating. A tough game to rate as the hidden object part is quite addictive and makes you switch back and forth between locations frequently (which is good). A lot of cons with this game though. No voice acting is really jarring to create the connection with the story. Because of this, the story is largely forgettable and I forgot by the end why I was doing what I was doing in the first place (again, the HOG part of the game is the drawcard here). There are a few items to find that have been lost in translation (including the infamous 'leaflet' item that is actually a leaf) making it frustrating at times. The worst puzzle in the centre of the game needs you to click 4 buttons in 4 sectors but actually only 3 are required which was rage inducing.
When you get past all of that, however, there is still something worth pursuing with in this game and with some more polish and refinement could have been great
Weak story and the last two achievements did not pop up until I restarted the games after finishing, but no other bugs were found. The puzzles are easy but the HO scenes were not too easy or too difficult. Plenty of HO scenes but not very many mini-games.
Just finished this game a few moments ago, with all achievements, meaning you're lookin' at about 2.5-4.5 hours of play time. (I have more because I got a bug and had to restart.) I've always loved HOG's like this that seem to take themselves kind of seriously, so my view on this may be through an overly flattering lens, but I think this game is worth it, especially when on sale. What you see is what you get, a point&click meets hidden object game, with the obligatory supernatural plotline.
The story is a bit ridiculous. It almost makes sense as you're going though it, but it definitely doesn't make much sense as a whole, and it also uses some outdated terms for Natives, which was very whack.
For what it is, the game is also really pretty, especially in some cutscenes.
HOWEVER, I cannot review this game in good conscience without noting some bugs. There are a few that are just annoying (clickboxes being wonky) but there are a couple that can full on break your game, keeping you from continuing without a full restart. (One of these moments is in the literal last three minutes in the game.)
If you can deal with that? There's no real reason not to get it if you're interested.
Only get it if its like 50 cents, thematically it has nothing to do with witches or warlocks, it has more to do with time travel. Its very meh sub-par.
Warning: Game breaking bug
In the last area that is snow-themed, make sure you pull the paper out from behind the radiator before you melt the snow. I didn't encounter this bug personally, but apparently it can soft lock your game, and you'll have to start again.
Review
I was pleasantly surprised by this game, and feel that it deserves a higher rating. Yes, there is no voice acting, but the cheaper price reflects that. The art is stunning and the game is long enough and fun. Perhaps get it on sale, it's worth playing!
It's... fine.
The first time I played this game I was in a bad mood, and didn't enjoy it. My second play-through I found it to be alright, so... there you go.
I'm done with it and would be surprised if I even visit it again, but it wasn't bad.
I can start out my review by saying that I'm absolutely not recommending this game. It's broken, it's infuriatingly bad and it's pretty much a guide on HOW TO NOT MAKE A POINT AND CLICK GAME.
Let's start out with bugs, bugs bugs bugs. Oh god, just look at the guide attached to this for three bugs. I discovered another one which I could mitigate in where I got a sack of powder before I was supposed to get it. The solution was to go get the sack which thankfully got the puzzle to unglitch itself so I got the sack WITH the powder in it.
And there's there's the translator. My god devs, why haven't you put this person through an English course yet? No, a CUP is not a damn tankard, NO a tankard is NOT a mug, a wine glass is NOT a sherry glass. I could go on with examples of words that are completely wrong in this. And since these words indicate what you need to click on, you can get stumped pretty hard trying to figure out what the poor translator meant when they used word X for item Y. In previous games it's been maybe a few items affected by it, but this game is just rife with them in every such scene and it makes you so annoyed when you have to use a hint to get it.
Then there's the annoying super precise puzzles which require you to be pixel perfect with placing things. I was stumped for so long on a puzzle that required me to lay out pieces of a poster on a table. Also, again, since it was a TAILORS table IT IS NOT A POSTER, IT'S A DAMN SCHEMATIC. I even used a hint before I by a happy accident managed to click the right pixel. GRRRRR BAD DEVS BAD!
In some areas, the puzzles aren't so much hard as they're just convoluted for their own sake. I mean, if you're in a hostile situation, which would you do? Go get a flask somewhere with water to fill up a glass with something chained to the bottom, or would you JUST SMASH IT AGAINST THE WALL? I mean come on. And then there's stuff like "I can't reach this thing" when you encounter at least three items that could solve the issue with reaching the thing while looking for the thing that does it!
Anyways, the game does have a lot of beautiful vistas and cozy places to visit. But until the devs do a quality pass on this, I'd recommend that everyone stay away from it. Out of all the games so far by this dev, this is by far the worst one.
Chronicles of the Witches and Warlocks is a nice family friendly H.O. Game.. ..provided you're aware of the game's fatal bugs and manage to avoid them.
There is a guide giving precious tips on the subject. I strongly recommend to read what it says on the bugs subject if you plan to play this game and read it before playing, preferably ;). Besides several bugs/glitches which might result in slowing a bit your gameplay, there are at least 2 bugs preventing the player from going further in the story. You're definitely stuck if so. But it's possible to avoid them.
It's sad to see those bugs were reported long ago but never fixed.
Apart from that, if you're aware, Chronicles of the Witches and Warlocks is a fair and nice HOG.
The graphics are rather beautiful. The music is calm.
It's worth a try.
It's quite short though and it has little replayability value (all achievements can be triggered within a single playthrough), so I recommend to get it while on sale.
Tons of bugs and bad translations. From simple things like calling a pretzel, a croissant. Bad translations happen in most every HOG. As well as saying you need to press 4 buttons on a dial in one game. When in reality you need to press 3 similar buttons. Achievements not triggering until you close the game and re-open it or create a new file. You get the picture... Until they fix those things, I would avoid this game. For as long as it's been out, there's really no excuse.
I will keep it short..
There are neither witches nor warlocks in this game.
Instead, you get time travelling, Indian rituals/curses and a little ghost girl.
It looks pretty. That's it.
The characters are lame, the story is meh and the ending is even worse.
Combined with easy puzzles and a repetetive soundtrack (which doesn't even loop correctly), it's overall a boring game.
(Also, I almost fell asleep while playing..)
Therefore, I'd rather recommend other hidden object games than this one.
