I love CyoA, the whole idea of text based adventures. Take your average game and imagine if they had put 100% of the budget into an amazing story instead of adding little wigglies when you click a flower in the UI.

80 Days has a really cool premise, traditional CyoA, but in a familiar setting with a clock running in the back. How much can you do, how far will you go.

Unfortunately the result is at best bland and at worst incredibly annoying.
Just read the book or watch the really nice BBC TV series instead.

Global achievements: only 1/3rd of all players have completed a journey. That is almost as many as those who haven't even finished the very first leg of the journey. Most of the story based achievements are in the 1-2 percentile. Not because the achievements are difficult, but because the players decide to play something else.

Imagine a hundred short stories, chopped up into 3-5 bits, scattering them all over nodes in a decision tree and you'll understand how that doesn't make for very compelling stories.
In addition, the actual gameplay loop of managing money and discovering and picking routes has no interaction whatsoever with these stories. And they can't really, because the journey should be possible, even if you haven't rolled the correct event at location xyz, that you may not even have gotten to.
So you end up with two games instead of one, and instead of enriching (as was clearly the intent) they are constantly getting in the way of each other.
And all that assuming that the stories are worth reading or engaging with.
Summary: The game is too short for good stories and too long to replay it enough times to get to know the stories.

In software development there is a saying: "eat your own dog food". It refers to the fact that most programmers don't use the things they made, and therefore never realize what doesn't work.
I have a really hard time imagining anyone from the dev team actually playing this for any period of time. Because in addition to appear incredibly random for most playthroughs it is also impossibly slow. I am being told in slowmo that i should fuck off, because the conductor doesn't know anything about Calcutta.

Random niggles:
* I found the UI frustrating to deal with
* The game is slow ... so slow. Can we not have an option to turn off ALL animations? Or even better, just turn off the graphics.
* No route planner. You cannot actually plan how long it would take one way or another, and you can only compare times from the city you are actually at. Combined with no feasibility indicators what a route is, or how expensive it may be, it is more like a mad dash around the map rather than a journey in 80 days.
* I have completed a journey in 77 days, where I have not read a single line of text, just randomly selected choices in order to clock minimum real time required for a play through.
* Time speeds up when going to the market and buying and selling. Hmm, let me think two hours about selling that watch or buying that flower.
* You can spend 14 days on a (in game text) boring boat ride and then be 20 minutes short in the next city because you forgot to repack your bags.
* Two train schedules are as big as a Winchester. A magnifying glass is twice as big as a bottle of rum. A cube of glass that (in game text) fits in a closed hand is as big as my stack of pants. (which the game decided to discard in favor of the glass cube)
* I never found out what that glass cube is for, presumably, because i went a way the game didn't anticipate, like going around the world.
* Negotiating for faster transport can be repeated for the same route.
* You can negotiate for the train to New York to leave before it arrives in Salt Lake.
* It pretends to be a rogue-lite by blocking certain obvious paths. Like the orient express not going all the way to Istanbul (yet) and there are no connections actually to Istanbul instead. Even funnier, when going an alternative route there is a (possible) comment how silly it is to try to go to Istanbul via Greece.
* You can buy a train ticket to somewhere and not be allowed to go there. (i.e. Vladivostok)
* Waiting in a city does not open new connections, even though these may exist.
* In my playthroughs additional routes where discovered mostly behind me, sometimes as i had just left. Other times in directions i had come from.
* When going from Yokohama to San Francisco there is a storm right before America that forces the boat to go to Honolulu instead. What?! There is also the possibility to mutiny on said boat (to force it back to San Fran I presume), Only the mutiny happens about an hour from Honolulu. In my last play through the mutiny failed and I was to be "marooned" on Honolulu or I had the choice to beg to stay on the boat. The marooning option saved me an hour vs. paying additional money to stay on the boat.
* Sometimes you find things to buy in the city that wants said item.
* Banks open an hour after the train would leave.
* When selecting routes, quite often it would say "leaves tomorrow" on the departure city, while the actual button would say something quite different.
* Some storylines depend not only on specific objects, but also the correct choices and locations.
* The story punchlines make me feel as if I had watched ten minutes of static on an old CRT.
* When receiving new objects, it will sometimes randomly discard items, sometimes you receive a new bag.
* Buying additional bags costs money, but if you don't put anything in them, the bags will be lost and you have to re-buy them (not really a big deal as bags are cheap. why this is even in the game i have no idea)
* A lot of times i would arrive somewhere on a Friday and would have to wait for Monday to be able to do things again, even in regions where this weekend thing doesn't make sense. (I concede, that checking back with London for bank related stuff, may be bound to it being weekday in England)
* You can get random traits or things. They generally have no impact on the ending or decisions, except that they are (rarely) referred to in discussions.
* There are no relations with anyone in game. How can there be, when you have 10 minutes in a city before leaving on the next camel.
* Every time the player tries to engage with something, they are admonished by Fogg. Yay story telling.
* No branch management, you have to write down what stories you have discovered and what routes you have tried. Which, with the aforementioned slowness of everything, is just bad.

Text-heavy but really lovely. I was expecting something a little more mid-tier and was surprisingly impressed. Getting the achievements should have been a chore, what with all the repeated text, but there were enough diverging paths that I got to see all sorts of extra stories.

Laden with steampunk, LGBTQ nonsense, and anti colonialism at every turn. What a disgrace to the original works.

I don't know what I was expecting, but I don't think I was expecting this to become one of my favorite games ever. But it's SO GOOD. It's WAY deeper and more expansive than you initially think. There are over 150 locations you can go to, including ones that would make no sense to travel to if you're just looking for the quickest route, and most places have their own little adventures you can check out, so the replay value is massive. Some of these mini-adventures continue on in different cities, so your choices matter, and sometimes they can even lead to different endings.

The game will probably seem hard your first playthrough. I completed my first trip in around 85 days or so. But it gets easier once you get the hang of it and learn which routes will lead to delays, etc. If you play it excessively like me, it does start to get somewhat repetitive at a certain point, but there's so much content, so many side quests, and alteration in the market items that it really takes a long time to feel repetitive. I 100%ed the game and have probably seen most of the content, which I read is over 700k words.

The cities are (mostly) based on major cities in the world in 1872, so some have historical names (e.g., Gastown instead of Vancouver, San Pedro instead of Los Angeles). It definitely feels like the devs did their research. Well, there's also a lot of stuff that is obviously not historically accurate, but that's just called creativity. This steampunk 1870s is fascinating and extremely well written, so it always feels smooth and cohesive.

Obviously, what really makes this game is the writing. Absolutely brilliant. This may be the first time in my life I've ever thought pretentiousness was a good thing, because it is 100% perfect for the setting. It's consistently interesting and engaging, and sometimes, hilarious. Passepartout is so delightfully weird. Ugh wow I just LOVE THIS GAME.

Flaws with the game? Just a few... I definitely would have appreciated save slots. You just get one auto-save slot and that's it. Also, I wish the clock didn't keep running while you're looking at the map. Sometimes routes expire for the day before I have time to click them. You just have to treat that as an additional obstacle, I guess. Anyway, whatever, because the game is perfect.

A unique game but I needed to plan better in advance. I got stuck on an island in the middle of the Atlantic with no money and 13 days left. In addition to buying all the charts and timetables, you must explore and talk to people as much as you can, to open up new routes.

Excellent twist to classic, letting player to choose their own adventure making each replay is unique. While the writing make players wonder about the world in game, steampunk element is done flawlessly and seamlessly integrated into the world providing some amazing events and route to the game.

You can spend hours playing this game and have great adventures if you pace yourself, take it slow and actually read what's on the screen. Whatever you do, don't just rush through the game. It's meant to be enjoyed at a certain pace. Bottom line, this is a very enjoyable adventure game in a charming, almost surreal setting.

I recommend this to gamers who like narrative experiences that are dependent on locations and are willing to do replays to different locations after 2-3 hours per playthrough (closer to 1 if you skim read like me).

I only played through twice, but I'm also not usually into text heavy games, and I tend to like more strategic choices than what this game offered: Explore (to show more routes), market (buy or sell items), bank (get more money), rest (advance to next day), travel, and negotiate sooner travel. For reference, one of my favorite text-heavy games is Life and Suffering of Sir Brante.

The mobile version of this was one of my go-tos for years and returning to it now I'm amazed by how much I remember. I do wonder if the game wouldn't be more interesting with some meta-level player tracking of some of the opportunities different cities and routes present (and I'll have to work out how to do some of the more weird and wonderful encounters again) but the sense of discovery and reacting to what happens each run presents is excellent.

Though I have not played too many visual novels, this one was one of the best for me. It didn't feel like a typical visual novel and as far as games go, it was highly polished and designed well. The routes revealed themselves, you're given an inventory that can be valuable in places which introduces a limited economy to help your progress, and you are able to open certain paths that can further the story. It has enough choice that you could replay this several times by choosing a different route each time. It also opens up the possibilities for what a visual novel can do and expands the scope of what a game could be! Interesting stories, worldbuilding, and choices makes this game a great experience. I would recommend a player not to view game reviews or playthroughs and just jump right into it. You don't want spoilers!

I've already played the game to death on mobile for years, and love it. However it is in desperate need of an update to accommodate for modern day rounded edge phone screens, as Fogg's health cannot be fully seen in the corner anymore and gets obscured. I really enjoy this game and how every playthrough can offer something unique depending on where you go and your interactions with other people, strategically managing what items to buy and sell based off of how much profit you can get or if they will offer special perks like haggling the price/departure time of transport or getting characters to reveal more useful information to you during conversations. If you aren't a fan of choose your own adventure games or story-based text games, then this isn't the game for you. This game is much more about the journey than the destination.
