History can be rewritten as you use your genius to lead your armies from victory to victory in Pike and Shot’s uniquely realized tactical battles. Previous victories and defeats determine the state of readiness of your forces, and every single unit will count to win the final battle. As you progress through the campaign, you will make hard decisions on a brand new strategic map, where terrain, manpower, supply, attrition, sieges and economic damage will all be defining your choices and making the difference between glory and defeat.
Hundreds of hours of gameplay await you in the four campaigns, all with their own armies and tactics:
- Gustavus Adolphus campaign, set in the “Swedish phase” of the Thirty Years War, allows you to play as Swedes or Imperialists.
- English Civil War campaign allows you to play as Royalists or Parliamentarians.
- Great Turkish War campaign, set in the period of the famous Siege and Battle of Vienna of 1683, allows you to play as Austria and Poland or as the Ottoman Empire.
- Pike and Shot skirmish campaign allows you to match any two armies from 1494 to 1698 in a struggle for dominance.
21 new skirmish army lists for the rest of Europe during the period of the Italian Wars (1494-1559) - covering the armies of England, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, German States, Austria, Hungary, Transylvania, the Ottoman Empire, Poland-Lithuania and Russia.
2 new skirmish lists covering Cornish and Scottish Royalist armies in the English Civil War.
37 new skirmish army lists for the period of the ascendancy of Louis XIV “Le Roi Soleil” - covering the armies of England, the Dutch Republic (and Anglo-Dutch “union”), Jacobite Scotland, Jacobite Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, German States, Austria, Hungarian Kuruc Rebellion, the Ottoman Empire, Poland-Lithuania and Russia from 1649 to 1698.
40 full-sized historical battles – 10 each for The Thirty Years War, English Civil War, Early 16th Century Italian Wars and Later 16th Century Wars (Tercio to Salvo).
154 different historically researched army lists, 20 playable nations and factions.
Stand Alone Battles and Scenarios
Stand-alone battle system allows unlimited “what-if” scenarios using historically realistic armies from carefully researched army lists, on realistic computer generated terrain maps, making every battle different.
Stand-alone scenarios are randomly generated and include open battle, attack on a defensive position, defence of a defensive position, awaiting reinforcements, enemy awaiting reinforcements, flank march.
In stand-alone games players can pick their armies from the army list or allow the computer to pick the army for them.
And also....
- Effective AI makes sound tactical decisions. Historical battle AI customised to the historical tactical situation.
- 5 difficulty levels allow the challenge to increase as you develop your battlefield and strategic skills.
- 20 troop-types, 25 “capabilities” and numerous different unit organisations allow full representation of tactical differences and developments throughout the period.
- Detailed model that accurately represents any substantial 16th or 17th century battle world-wide as scenarios are developed.
- Mod friendly game system with built-in map editor.
- Multiplayer mode allows historical scenarios and “what-if” scenarios to be played by two players using Slitherine’s easy to use PBEM server.
- Large library of user-created single-player and multi-player historical scenarios that can be directly downloaded in-game.

I can finally push those pesky English back to London, just the way St. Andrew intended. With a dozen Pike keils and a lot of artillery.
Other than that this game also covers an extra 138 years. You can play out every European armed conflict of the early modern era, from Flodden to Zenta. You can also easily download community content in the game itself, ranging from new army lists to civil war battles. The gameplay also changes drastically as the years go on, as it will be a completely different game as an early age German states list, then a late game British list.
You can also chose to destroy the entire enemy army if you play a single player skirmish game, so that's fun I guess.
Steam reviews have to be "positive" or "negative;" yet again, I wish for a "meh" option, which I would use here if I could.
The tactical game is resoundingly okay. It's evocative of the pike and shot era, and it's a lot of fun to achieve a ripple rout of multiple enemy units. But there's a lot of repetitive moves to be made manually in order to get there. The campaign mode, meanwhile, is so barebones that it's generous to call it a "campaign mode."
I'd recommend this on deep sale. The $11.99 price on offer during the winter sale feels right. The $39.99 regular price earns it this negative review.
Pretty good. Definitely deeper than you first expect. Very hard, expect a big learning curve. Does have some limits on army size, really can't manage the full size of armies of the time.
Some mechanics will frustrate you, when cavalry pursues a routed foe and opens up your entire line to counterattack, but is consistent with historical accounts of what cav might do.
Hakkaa päälle
I've played quite a bit of Field of Glory 2 and had this game on my wishlist for a while now because the Thirty Years War interests me and now, while it was on sale, I finally bought it. I can imagine that a lot of people are put off by the steep learning curve and pretty high difficulty of this game, especially if you are not used to similar games, but I think that P&S might be even more addictive than FOG2 once you get a couple hours in. You have to get used to a couple game mechanics that seem a bit strange in the beginning, like your units choosing nearby primary attack targets which need to be attacked unless you move your unit to a different position, but overall the rules of the game are pretty logical. The constant barrage of gun salvos between your army and the enemy adds a layer of unpredictability and action to the game which isn't meant negatively. While in other games you can plan all your moves ahead, here you need to think twice before you move a unit because they might get shot at three seperate times and have their morale broken before you can move them again.
The full price is pretty high but when it's on sale, you love difficult tactical games and are looking for a good game that covers the Thirty Years War then I can wholeheartedly recommend you this game.
you don't actually play the game. you're constantly underinformed by the ui (oh, my unit can't turn because something something action points? would've been nice to have some indication of that before I moved them. oh, this forest is completely traversible to my opponents but not to me? truly, I'm thrilled. doesn't explain why I can melee charge into it but.. not follow up?) plus you get scenarios like "oh, my units pursue fleeing units through a miniscule gap instead of fighting enemy units right next to them? great."
and you have to click the bloody check mark every time. let me press enter to close the dialogue boxes.
some reviews praise the game's realism and eh. maybe? but as a game? well, if I wanted to watch paint dry I'd go and buy some.
Have to get used to it but until now it looks okay.
Somehow more enjoyable than Field of Glory 1 and 2 - which are obviously more polished. Simpler to match my mediocre skills and providing substantial fun without a great intellectual investment.
Field of Glory 2. With boomsticks.
If you like turn based strategy and are interested in the era of Pike and Shot tactics, I'm not sure what more explanation this game needs. It's not super pretty and the modes are relatively lacking, but you get numerous missions as well as campaigns that I liken to the old galactic conquest mode in Star Wars Battlefront. There's a nebulous 'economy' that you use to raise armies, and you move them around on a small map until you engage the enemy. It's fun enough, but the historical battles are really what you want.
Unless you really, really love pike and shot tactics, I would hold off on this game until it's on sale. It's good, but I can't endorse it at full price. Get it on sale for 10 bucks and you'll be happy.
Pros:
- Will run on a potato
- Cool historical setting
- Some nice mechanics
Cons:
- Can feel very RNG
- Poor campaign mode and mechanics
- Lack of Grand Campaigns
If you can pick this up *very cheap* it may be worth the price of admission, however I just think it's too basic and there are better TBS games out there that do similar things.
a worthy purchase. very interesting and unique.
Just a great game for anyone who likes horse and musket warfare - from skirmish to grand campaign. And none of the distractions that so many AGEoD games have, like research, diplomacy, etc. Just combat, handled pretty well. The AI is ok, but the game would be best against a human PBeM opponent.
