Intro
Lilly and Sasha: Nexus of Souls is the second installment of the Lilly and Sasha series, which continues its story from Lilly and Sasha: Curse of the Immortals (my review). Unlike the first game, it tries to balance its content between puzzles, combat, and fetch quests.
Pros:
- 3 difficulties
- Various, simple puzzles to solve
- More balanced approach between combat, fetch quests, and puzzles
Cons:
- It is hard to know where to go next
- Some puzzles might be confusing to understand
Specs

In-Depth Review
Visuals
The game looks similar to the first game albeit with a lower quality. It might look appealing at first after coming from the first game due to the rework in the combat visuals, although it will soon die out after you play the game for a while. All areas look similar with their square outline, forcing you to traverse the vast area over and over. It feels like I'm exploring the same map despite it looking different from each other. I couldn't even remember most locations because of this, which gives me a hard time when I had to go back to the previously explored areas for collectibles.
Story
The story becomes more serious this time. Most side quests are gone, and the interactions between characters are mostly limited to the events that transpire. Some dialogues still look foolish like the first game, although it isn't showing as much as before. Dialogues are still one of the best aspects of this game though. There might be not much that happens in the main story, but the conversations between the characters are still enjoyable.
People who haven't played the first game shouldn't play this game. Although it offers a short recap, you'll miss a lot of things that the first game has, whether it's the useless banter between characters or the story itself. The recap is meant for those who have played the first game, not those who never see any of the cutscenes.
The Game
Gameplay
As I said before, the gameplay is more balanced between puzzles, combat, and fetch quests. Puzzles become less apparent in the game, although you still can find some with a unique theme in each dungeon. Most puzzles in the game are replaced by fetch quests instead, forcing you to pick up an item and press a certain button to use it in the area. While this looks interesting at first, this turns into a chore later on, especially since you can only pick one item at a time. You'll have to go back and forth between places to take the same items several times just to finish that certain side quest.
Combat is more solid. First of all, you can speed up the animation through the options. You'll spend a lot of time battling monsters in this game, and having a faster combat speed helps to kill the boredom. You also can buy more than one item in the shop, which helps to build your party members into whatever that you want.

Despite the easier difficulty, it can be hard to understand how puzzles work. This mostly applies to the puzzles in the first dungeon since you need to position an item carefully and be mindful of where it is facing. There are no instructions on how to solve the puzzles, and although this approach can work in the first game, it becomes a disaster in this game. It becomes almost impossible to figure out the whole mechanic unless if you know it beforehand.
The game has unclear progression this time. There aren't many side quests that you can do, so you are bound to focus on the main quests instead. However, it is hard to know where you are supposed to go next. The game will only specify which direction that you need to go, although you need to figure out from where you are supposed to go to reach that next destination. Moreover, the similar-looking maps in each area also make it hard to remember the location that you haven't explored yet.

Length and Difficulty
I finished the game in 12.6h. The game still offers 3 difficulties and it allows you to transfer your save from the first game to retain your items and difficulty. That being said, my save is set into the easy difficulty since that's the difficulty that I used on the first game.
Difficulty-wise, the game isn't difficult at all. The only problematic thing that you need to do is to figure out where you are supposed to go next or learn how a puzzle work. I had some difficulties in solving some puzzles in the first game, but I didn't find any trouble in this game at all.
Problems
You can't see what skills that a party member has until you use them at your party. Moreover, the game also tends to change the party members that you use in battle after some cutscenes. It can be annoying to check it every time just to make sure that you got the party members that you want. Lastly, the game still stutters. I had to change the compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 3 to fix it.
Conclusion
Lilly and Sasha: Nexus of Souls feels like a downgrade from the first game. Maps tend to have the same layout and I even noticed some that are reused in the dungeons. There isn't much depth to the puzzles either, and the side quests that I liked from the first game are almost gone. However, the game is still of a higher quality than the rest of RPG Maker games, especially whenever it's on a sale. I'm not sure if it's going to be on sale someday, but if it does, it doesn't hurt to pick it up if you liked the first game.
Lilly and Sasha: Nexus of Souls is part 2 of an adventure RPG trilogy made in RPG Maker, with puzzles as a main feature. The story continues where it left off, with Sasha absent from the party. Some of the other party members leave throughout the course of the adventure, and new ones are acquired. There is well over 20 hours of gameplay.
***Warning: this game has serious lag when played through Steam. It is suggested that you play it offline.***
The story is entirely plot-based. The characters' backgrounds are never explored beyond simple introductions, and they are used mostly for quest-related discussions, and occasional humor. Cutscenes provide ample entertainment throughout your progress, and often include comedy as well as drama.
Puzzles are a primary feature of the game, and travelling through an area usually means completing one puzzle after another. There is enormous variety in these puzzles, and they are satisfying, without being difficult. There seems to be an improvement over part 1 in this area. Side quests sometimes contain more difficult puzzles, if you are interested.
Enemies are visible on the map, and are easily avoided, but you must fight most of them anyway, to level up so you can beat the bosses. Battles are the same as in part 1. Each character has a basic move, a strong move, a status-type move, and a team move with each of the other party members. Each of the two main moves may have a rune attached, and each character may carry two trinkets which enhance their abilities. Pets are acquired throughout your travels, and you may choose two of these to help you during battles. Each pet will have its own way to assist the party. Although you might have up to five party members, you may choose only three to fight in battles. Weapons are equipped automatically, and upgrades for each character are found in treasure chests along the way.
The game is mostly linear, but sometimes you might have more than one quest in the log book. Side quests are not documented here, and although they seemed to be scarce, my progress meter showed that I completed only 75% of the game.
Towns have shops where you can buy a lot of items, but runes are the only thing worth buying. You'll acquire more gold than you'll ever need, and you can use it to buy various houses in different towns, and upgrade them, but after buying two houses, I didn't discover anything useful about having them.
The flow of the game is very nice. I was never bored, always knew what to do next (except for the one time I couldn't find Quenera), and the battles are quick and painless. Overall, this game is quite good, and the constant puzzles give it an even greater edge over other similar titles. It is slightly better than part 1 of the same series.
At the beginning of the second volume of the Lilly and Sasha saga, Sasha has succumbed to the dark side and joined Zahhak. Lilly now races to try and defeat Zahhak and save her sister... even if she must kill her to do it.
More fun puzzles, witty banter... and engaging plot.
Will Lilly succeed?
Continues directly after the events of the first, it also enables us to import out characters in its final stage which is great. Nexus of Souls is a bit underwhelming in terms of main-quest quality and most of the puzzles were easy compared to the first game, although the diversity of puzzles is better in this game. A little downgrade in terms of quest and puzzles is compensated with better combat mechanics and stronger enemies. I especially enjoyed the relic bosses a lot, some of them required several tries with different builds each time to test the ability to create builds and execute them properly against powerful enemies. Nice sequel to the first game. I think this series should have ended at the end of this game, but there seems to be a sequel that I have not touched by this time of course. Overall a good rpg, recommended on discount.

Part 2 of the trilogy. Continues the story from Lilly and Sasha: Curse of the Immortals. If you liked the first one, you should like this one. A lot of fun!
ENG:
Great sequel of the "Curse of Immortals".
You'll love dialogs (as always), bigger world, music and puzzles.
Can't wait to play in the third game!
РУС:
Прекрасное продолжение "Проклятья Бессмертных".
Вы влюбитесь в диалоги (как всегда), расширенный мир, музыку и загадки.
Не могу дождаться момента запуска третьей игры!
### This is game two in the Lilly and Sasha series###
This game starts litterally in the same room as the first game ends. Make sure you first play Lilly and Sasha: Curse of the Immortals before playing this one. When you start a new game weather you import your save or start a new game there is a recap, but if you havn't played the first game it will be harder to get into.
Same as the first Lilly and Sasha game. Good story, nice well rounded combat system, and the music goes great with the game. Thankfully the humor that made the first game such a pleasure playing through is back in this one as well. At the time I wrote this I am about five hours in and I look forward to playing this and I hope John Wizard is able to bring the third Lilly and Sasha game onto Steam.
