Meh - long and boring, Poor entry in the Artifex catalog
A stereotypical Casual Hidden Object Point & Click Adventure game.
Not exactly thought-provoking. Only take a few hours to fully complete.
Mostly a bit of leisurely wholesome fun that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Owen is back! We are so back.
Only 2 years after The Serpent Creek in 2013, 9 Clues 2: The Ward was released. This game is nearly a decade old by the time of review, but surpassed the expectations as a sequel of a great series.
I think the depth to this is better than the first game. This was futher accentuated by the phenonemal delivery of the voice actors, there was variety to them and bits of their history based on hypothetical analysis. While there's nothing to say about the hidden object scenes and puzzles, the direction of the game is quite complex. I say this to acknowledge the latter as one of its strengths.
However, a few setbacks experienced influenced my own rating for this game. There is no side story, and to compensate for a no-Expert clear achievement, you are required to play it twice because you're unable to complete the achievements in one playthrough.
I remember playing this game a few years back and thinking this was more of my favorite than the first one in the series. This serves accurately proven with a replay of my today's playthrough. With only a little over 2 hours for first playthrough and an hour additional to complete the achievements, this game has relatively a better execution, therefore landing a solid 8/10.
i THOUGHT THAT THE HIDDEN OBJECT PUZZLES WERE TOO SIMPLISTIC. OTHER ARTIFEX MUNDI GAMES WERE MORE CHALLENGING.
9 Clues 2: The Ward is an underwhelming hidden object adventure published by Artifex Mundi, set in an insane asylum where a murder case took place. I did not enjoy it.
There are some great and gorgeous Artifex Mundi hidden object games out there, particularly some of those not just published but also developed by them. This is not one of those games. Art and animations look incredibly dated, and would've already done so back in 2015 when the game was released.
Voice acting and writing are also bad. Most damningly, the protagonist is such a lousy detective that she gets incapacitated several times by antagonists. Not every game needs to be a power fantasy, but in this game the protagonist is handed the Idiot Ball any time a cutscene appears. I didn't like the finale, either.
The gameplay itself doesn't work, either. You get the typical hidden object slop where you're tasked to find generic reused assets that are low contrast and don't fit the game theme. Also, the hidden object puzzles here ask you to find items by name (e.g. "bow"), rather than by shape, and this just doesn't work, like when it turns out that the requested item is a knotted ribbon, rather than the weapon you use to shoot arrows. Due to such poor design, my playtime was mostly spent spam-clicking everywhere. Yuck.
Finally, the Steam achievements are implemented in a really lousy way: a whole bunch of them are missable, and the game doesn't support backtracking at all, so 100%ing this thoroughly underwhelming game would require multiple playthroughs.
Not recommended. Play a good hidden object game instead. I'm partial to Artifex Mundi's Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride, for example.

Solve the Mystery of Mnemosyne Asylum and Learn Its Secrets
It’s been a bit since I last played a hidden object adventure game and since I played the original game in the 9 Clues series. I remember having a lot of fun playing The Secret of Serpent Creek, so I thought I’d finally check out the sequel. Time for another mystery!
Stepping back into the shoes of the young detective from the first game, we receive a call from a distressed individual who asks us to come to Mnemosyne Asylum, which stands alone, isolated on an island. With the help of our new partner (Owen Duffer from the first game), we head there to start our investigation. But, once we arrive, a doctor falls from a window to his untimely demise. Something very strange is going on at Mnemosyne. What secrets are the residents and employees of the institution hiding? Who is Ginger? Can the mystery be solved before disaster strikes the asylum once more?
I wanted to play a hidden object game again, so I thought this one would be a good choice, and I also wanted to continue the 9 Clues series. To be honest, I slightly enjoyed this game more than the first one. What I really liked more about this one was its story and how creepier it was. Throughout the game, the puzzles and hidden object scenes were well-balanced. While there weren’t many HO scenes in the beginning, they picked up later in the game. The only real puzzle that I had issues with was when I had to move gears to their correct positions near the end. Just like the first game, you are looking for nine clues relating to the mystery and a Detective Mode for crime scenes to reconstruct what happened returned. Like Serpent Creek, this one was also a pretty casual experience overall.
I do wish this game had gotten another sequel, as it would’ve been nice to see the two detectives again, but this wasn’t a bad end to the series.
4 out of 5 ★★★★☆!
