About the Game
A Video Game About a Woman Talking to the PoliceHer Story is the award winning video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark.
How does it work?
Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.
Unlike anything you've played before, Her Story is an involving and moving experience. A game that asks you to listen.

Spent 2 days going over all of the evidence and was STILL off.
Cannot praise this enough, one of the best experiences i've had.
Wish there were more games like this.
10/10
Her Story is a very unique game that will turn you into Sherlock and then mess with your head. It tells an interesting crime story through video clips of interviews.
What I liked: The way the game tells the story, not in order, and how you search for clues is very different and fun. The main actress does a great job. The story is broken up, but it's very interesting and makes you want to work hard to understand what's going on. If you're no detective, then brace for understanding nothing or even hating the game.
What I didn't like: The ending could be better. Also, some players might find it boring to just search for clips and watch them.
Who it is for: This game [should be age 16+ or 18+], is perfect for people who like:
Mystery and crime stories
Stories that aren't told in order
Games where the story and characters are more important than how you play
You're a detective and up for a challenge
Score: 4.75/5
Your Zuko costume's pretty good, but your scar's on the wrong side!
A mystery... a murder... and us, with a bunch of scattered video clips to piece it all together.
Who are we? Who's the killer?
Her Story makes you grab a pen and take notes just to keep track of every detail
If you're into crime-solving and mystery games, don't miss this one.
It’ll surprise you.
"Give in to the urge—you know you need to figure out the mystery of what happened to Her Story."
I had a lot of fun following the story and recommend this game if you're willing to go through an interactive movie. The basic gameplay is to search for keywords that bring up clips of interviews (ranging from 1 second long to up to 2 minutes); the main focal point is understanding a murder which recently took place.
While this could be watched in order (you can search the keyword "blank" and delete this custom keyword as you go), the experience of thinking up relevant keywords as you go makes it a lot more enjoyable.
Her Story is a unique game with a very user-driven experience!
There is no clear "objective" and very little information to begin with - and that was very film-like and you become your own investigator with your own interpretation of the recordings.
Overall, the experience was "good". However, I did get a bit bored of watching the recordings at times and everything you experience at the beginning of the game (other than more new recordings), stays the same.
Would recommend as a chill game at the sale price that is interesting and takes only an hour or two to complete :)
Great story and cool concept I never seen a game like it I haven’t played telling lies yet although i did get it in the bundle I tried this one 1st due to better ratings but I’m still intrigued.

Extremely interesting concept and clever story telling slowly unravelling reveals
its funny that its an older game but it was so good have me thinking i had to complete it 100% i loved it so much that i restarted it and my wife joined me and we took notes and tried to make sense of it
basically just a bunch of movie clips. honestly I'd just watch it be played, you'd get the same experience :/
The twists and turns are great, and the story isn't one you'd expect. Have fun, it's a wild ride.
amazing acting! just one actress holding the entire game! great twist ending!
The game has a very interesting premise - you are viewing parts of interrogations categorized by many tags. You can view them only by searching the databse using these words. Overall the plot of the game is very intriguing, there are many details hidden in plain sigth, but here all the good sides of the game end.
You, as a player, have no real objective. Yeah, of course, you should seek out the real reason of the murder, but there is no reward. I'm not saying it's bad that the game is not holding you by the hand, but there is not even a *ding* that you are on the correct path. It's more of a achronological movie than a real game. What's more, it's dramatically short.
Do not buy if it's not on a sale. Do not buy if you want real gameplay. If you like movies you view in innovative ways, go ahead.
Absolutely incredible idea of solving murder mystery on your own.
The story is absolutely amazing and tragically sad. I really love how you have to search for the video clips to try to piece together what happened.
This game got me hooked on investigative games. 10/10
Game has no point. NO Resolution. You have no idea why you are watching these videos.
game good
the only part that was a game was the mirror game inside the rubbish where the whole damn thing belongs.
I had a better time than I initially expected. The storytelling approach is definitely unique and experimental and I felt hooked with the story until I unlocked about 75% of the clips. I said that since few clips are either too short or contain unexpected keyword(s)/tag(s), where I used guides to unlock the rest of it. BTW, the story may contain content that you find disturbing.
I had mostly good experience and I would recommend Her Story if you're a fan of games with an investigation/mystery theme or with a unique storytelling approach.
I really enjoyed this one. Really rewards you for paying attention and piecing things together. I like that, even though there are answers, even after 100%ing the game there are still questions, doubts, hypotheses. Most detective games seem like they want you to have all the answers by the time the story is done.
The one downside of this game is that 100%ing is nowhere near as enjoyable or thought provoking as just finishing the story, whatever that means to you. Here, it's not so much deduction as just guessing which filler words you've missed, or spamming admin_random and hoping you find something unwatched.
Still a really enjoyable, short game.
I've had this game for over 10 years and never took the time to actually sit down and play it. I'm familiar with movie video games. I've played a few on the Xbox. I finally got around to play it last night on my stream and honestly thought I was gonna play it for a few minutes. I actually like it. I recommend more games like this. It honestly could've been multi-series project of a bunch of different people talking to the police.
great story. recommended.
Great concept, not a great ending (no real ending at all, in fact). For a sale, it's not bad, and it's a unique experience. Just kind of a letdown that the pieces didn't fit together in a more satisfying way.
I don't remember buying it, but it was a mistake. This is not a game, this is wierd ahh video player
Great game. Viva Seifert's acting is really good. The plot is also nice. I really enjoyed this game. Recommended!
I usually don't recommend games, but this one is amazing, it doesn't have a proper ending, as the ending itself is YOUR interpretation of the events. I played with my friend over a weekend and we both had different outcomes, was quite nice to discuss and try to see each other's view and analysis. Also, this actress deserves an award for her act.
this game has been like a second job for the past few days. it has stood the test of time and is still an enjoyable experience a decade later
Her Story presents such a unique way to unravel a story. Having things unfold completely based on your own curiosity and what you decide to search up means that you can come up with your own predictions and have a revelation made in a way that is unique to you. Although the criticism could be made that it isn't much of a "game", if the story manages to intrigue you, then you will be hooked all the way until the end. Great to play with a friend or group as well! Everyone can guess what to search up next and predict how the story will unfold. A fun little experience to go through (especially if you can snag it on sale).
Not awful, but not great by any means. Beat the game in a few hours so by the outlook of our economy what would that run? Sadly I'd recommend getting paid for a few hours over playing this. It would be better time well spent and I hate working...
To be honest, this is not really a game.
This "game" has achievements and title, but it is not a game. You type single words, and watch videos of the suspect where she is saying this specific word.
There is nothing to drag, there is nothing to click on, nothing to point on or to open. Overall once you figure out that you are talking to twins, and "ask" the correct words, the "game" ends and you see credits animation.
Super short, not interesting or funny, sorry to say.
Go ahead, be a detective, piece it together. It's more than meets the eye.
I AM SHOOK, THIS WAS SO GOOD! I had to finish it in one sitting because I was completely absorbed by this game all evening. If you're like me (binge reads thrillers and enjoys puzzles, mystery, crime, storytelling) then this game is for you! I recommend going in blind.
Just fantastic. Satisfying gameplay and a good story and decent replay value as well.
Unique FMV murder mystery where you discover more and more of what happened as you use a search engine to locate a series of videos from police interrogation. About one evening to complete it, so short but very well done. A big "aaaaha moment" when you figure it out...Recommended 8/10.
My wife doesn't play games and I thought this could be a fun cooperative experience for us. We were both engrossed for the 2 hours and change we played through it, several times exclaiming as a big reveal happened and the story unfolded. Think of it as a fun alternative to renting a movie and as a personal murder mystery party.
Before trying it I thought i would spend at most 3,4 minutes in this game, but after a few videos played me and two friends got really hooked in the story. very nice experience.
Her story is an experience i highly recommend going in blind, with the least amount of external help possible. The way this game shines is on the theory crafting you make while playing it, and how the game naturally leaves you on the trail to discover the main story without much difficulty.
The main premise is you're investigating an old case that goes way deeper than meets the eye, I spent these 5 hours playing this game paying so much attention, and got really invested in the story.
The only thing I didn't like that much is 100%ing the game after finishing it, kiiinda tedious...
9,5!
Her Story remains Sam Barlow's best work and at this point I'm not certain he can ever top this work.
Brilliant story, acting, game mechanism. I personally enjoyed all Sam Barlow games including this, Telling Lies, and Immortality, but this one is probably the best.
Her Story turned out to be an excellent game to play together with someone.
Mechanically, the game gives you access to a series of interviews conducted with a suspect in a murder case. The catch is that the interviews are cut into roughly 10-second-long pieces, and you can’t access them directly. Instead, you must use text search to find all the pieces containing a given word or phrase in the subtitles. To add to the challenge, you can only see the first five videos returned, so searching for something like “the” won’t get you very far.
You don’t have any specific goal in the game, but naturally, you want to watch all the pieces, reconstruct the interviews, and piece together what happened.
We stuck to a simple yet effective flow: watch the found videos, jot down any words that catch our attention, search for those words, and repeat the process. As I said, the game is ideal to play together. For one, the videos are short and easy to digest, and since the game requires little direct interaction, both players get essentially the same experience. Moreover, you can divide the tasks—one person keeps track of the words to search, while the other operates the game. This way, both players stay engaged, making it a true team effort.
Plot-wise, you won’t uncover a groundbreaking story, but it has its fair share of twists and turns. That said, the unique approach feels fresh and keeps you hooked until the very end.

If you enjoy novel game mechanics / unconventional storytelling, this is worth playing. It was recommended to me as being similar to Return of the Obra Dinn. It isn't, really, other than being a detective story. The search mechanic makes you think of solutions in a way I haven't experienced in a game before. That said, I think the concept could be put to better use. You end up using brute force more than logical deduction. Elements of the ending were satisfying, but I'm disappointed that so many of the clues I gathered didn't matter in the end.
"Her Story" is a innovative take on the FMV game and I really liked it. The cyber sleuth game play—although simple—was super addictive, enough for me to beat the game in one sitting. I love any game where I can take notes and while the "puzzles" are not big brain stuff, "Her Story" made me feel like at least a detective in training. Check "Her Story" out if it looks up your alley. 4/5
i played a lot of this and i probably still didnt get everything
Unique gameplay used to unravel great story.
Very Good.
Incredibly involving, oddly satisfying. Fitting the pieces together was like watching and odd picture taking form in front of you. Loved it and i like it doesn't take your hand or insult your intelligence. Also you can finish the game whenever you feel like you are done with it. It helps that i love unique experiences. 8.5/10
I loved the gameplay; searching for words to find the missing clips was quite fun. It didn't feel like a simple typing game as you do have pay attention to what was being said and extrapolate what word is important, and sometimes you can even get a word from visual observation which was pretty cool.
I really loved the 90s aesthetics as well. I looked up how the dev achieved this and it was a pretty cool process.
Viva Seifert gave a brilliant performance as the woman being interviewed. She really elevated the game and kept you captivated to the screen.
The story itself was quite well written. Very intriguing mystery that had me at the edge of my seat. The big revelation was a simple premise that's been done numerous times in other media and yet here it was executed wonderfully. Piecing together her story (heh) from the clips on this fictional police database was pretty fun.
Overall, a really cool game. It really was quite an experience.
