Sketchy tycoon-type game. You've in control of some advertisement agency, and your goal is to raise funds, as high as possible, by spamming the population in your zone of control with your ads. If you play your cards well, you'll get that much money, that you'll buy the corporations you've worked with, buy all the buildings in the city you're operating...

The key word - sketchy. The visuals, the controls, the fundamental economical mechanics - are all too vague and outline, to get a feeling of the proper tycoon game. In the basic functionality, AdvertCity plays more like a clicker game. Very user-unfriendly clicker game, I might add.

As a result, I really don't know if 1 gamer out of several millions, will play it for any length of time, keeping the interest in restarting this game with new cities to explore.

My mark is 4.4/10, and I can't recommend it.

The first thing that stands out is a nearly unreadable font. It's nice they add a choice to resize the font, but the choice of font sacrifices a lot in readability in order to give some sort of feel the creator wanted.

The gameplay was just confusing as could be. I don't think the creator of the game managed to pull together a gameplay loop that would be easy to pick up. Instead of dealing with making choices, I found myself dealing with what I was supposed to be doing in the UI. I quickly lost willingness to continue trying to sort out how to actually play the game.

AdvertCity is a relatively simple management game about running an advertising firm in a cyberpunk metropolis, earning your keep by slathering the surrounding cityscape in neon billboards and lewd cyberspace ads at the behest of several other megacorporations, each with their own likes and dislikes. This may all sound pretty engaging, and it is, at least for the first hour or so. Once you've got a steady cashflow going, any sense of challenge flies out the window and the management facade flakes off to reveal the idle-game core underneath. It's extremely easy to become best buddies with all the other megacorps and unlock every advertising technology in the game before the end of the second hour, turning gameplay into little more than endlessly clicking the same few buttons. Losing money is next to impossible, with no rival ad firms and all strategy reduced to "dont place a companies ads on a building owned by their rival". The (randomly generated) city this all takes place in makes for some nice screenshots, but feels very lifeless during actual gameplay. This is supposed to be a bustling futuristic megacity, yet the only moving parts seem to be the advertising blimps. No traffic, no pedestrians, no construction work, nothing. The fact that all the buildings are indistinguishable blocks doesn't help either. The only thing that saves the atmosphere is the very solid and theme-appropriate soundtrack and perhaps the writing, which, although confined to small descriptions of corporations and advertising technologies, does contain a good dose of cynical humour. The last thing to mention would be the buyouts, which are after all the main goal of the campaign. Taking over a rival megacorp is usually so ridiculously expensive that it might take several hours to save up enough cash, especially since running successful adverts for a company increases its overall value. Alternatively, you can hack them to decrease their value. This allows you to buy them out a lot faster, but it's still a pretty annoying process. (The game never tells you about this by the way, I only found out through the Steam forums) And besides, buying out corporations doesn't actually help you in any way, quite the opposite, since for some reason you can't run adverts for companies you own.

In the end, AdvertCity offers up a great concept, but fails to do anything with it. The charming and relaxing atmosphere fails to paper over the crippling lack of content, depth and variety and leads to a game that feels more like a rough prototype than a finished product.

Glad I waited years to buy this on super sale. It is barely worth $1. the navigation is hard, the tutorial is hard, the gameplay is lackluster, minimal, and hard. There is weird graphical errors where they tried to make streets with car lights traced, but its not consistent and weird places where it bends/twists/tears. Probably not even worth the dollar. Glad I waited years and only spent $1.20

User Interface is ABYSMAL. Cannot tell what to press to do one thing or another. Tutorial text is extremly low quality, because I cannot even get through it to get a bank loan or start advertising I am extremely confused on how the game even works.

I think I'd describe this as an atmospheric clicker/simulation hybrid. You run an advertising corporation in a cyberpunk city, and run online and IRL ads for the different corporations there. There's some mechanics like managing your reputation with the corporations and determining the best way to run the different kinds of ads that have potential, but once all the tech is unlocked I feel like I'm just clicking mindlessly over and over to spam ads. I think the end game is to buy out all the corporations, but even though I had a ton of profit and high positive reputations with all the other corporations, I think I was looking at hours of saving up money to be able to afford the corporate takeovers. I didn't feel like there was anything satisfying for me after that point. Combined with accessing information being a chore (I had to click into each building to see which corporation owned it, and keeping track of which buildings I owned was nearly impossible) and a UI that was a bit fussy (it closed me out of the window I was in if I didn't click precisely on the button I was going for, even if I clicked inside the pane, so I kept constantly getting kicked out of the window I was in) and I just got bored and frustrated.

It has much more to offer than it looks



Playing this is illuminating. At least now you will know what all the cryptic lyrics really means from that Neon Dominion and why the L.A. of the future looks so materialistic. It is up to you to become the master of the puppet master, the corporations that masters all the people to buy their futuristic gadgets. Someone gotta keep this world consuming spinning.

I just believe this game deserves more attention. As the gameplay is too simple for schemes, you may judge it as somewhat bland. But it is a management war viciously fast paced, in a blink of an eye you can doom your entire gameplay. Like a 300 pages long algorithm that can fall with a single wrong number, you get mad by tracking and correcting it while the clock ticks. All the fun lies on that. Your company must start marketing campaigns for clients which may or may not appreciate it, so go tactical, they are supposed to have their own interests.

People seems to ditch the game before knowing about it, so Remember, remember before you go:

If you're slow to react or easily broken when under pressure, stay away from that game.

You should make friends but don't bother keeping them, you're here to take over them all.

Don't even try to find beauty, aesthetics should NEVER be your priorities.

Why is this even three dee?



It may be just to bother you with clicking and screen edges. It don't get why you got this 3D city with low res textures instead of 2D scrolling, like SimCity 2 or 3000. It just harder to be created (in theory) as if the game is trying to impress you with something he hasn't, graphic fidelity. Put video or neon advertisements on a building and it will look just as the static one. It is supposed to be a cyberpunk future where flying cars does exists, but nothing is displayed only this static looking 3D mass of square buildings and mountains on the meat-space. The cyberspace doesn't look animated neither, but the music changes on a perfect sync when you do.

The devs are creative, but if you're indie just embrace it the way you are.

The Sim City burning syndrome



At first it goes easier than most management games, until the perpetual difficulty pushes you against the wall. The debt you have is right under your earnings just to remind you what ''account in the red" invoice really is, it grows exponentially no matter what you do and how good you're performing. Be too far away from that debt growth and it is game over for you. This crash and burn system reminds me a lot about Sim City 4, the first game in the Sims series that bothered in teaching you how to make some money before dooming yourself on a inevitable bankruptcy catastrophe. The music on Adverticity also reminds me a little about Utopia: Creation of a Nation, just thinking out loud while I write here, but the musics are nice just nothing new or outstanding, worthy of buying separately that is.

Backgrounds, cards and emoticons



Backgrounds are both worthless. Not a single one has anything special, and the Blimp Bros is self entitled ''rare'' for some reason. Cards just looks generic. Except for the Transhumanic league that has this retro-look, 80s Metal Hurlant-esque design, they're all cheap anyway so prefer to convert your pile to gems instead of trying to sell it if you're not using them. Emoticons are okay I guess, not wasting much opportunities. The Hack Skull would look nicer if bigger or if it was a background, I don't get why it is just an emoji.

The Face Clicker is a funny pun over Facebook and serves you as the only cool emoticon, but also as a very useful badge. If you have the ''collector'' problem on your Steam profile, (or if you're actually the collector) it sends them the message.

You will be dropped into a generated city simulation. No matter how prepered you might be, it will be a shock to your gaming senses. The tutorial will tell you to find your HQ, and it will take you several minutes to find the tiny shelter hidden behind several skyscrapers, on the far side of town. The game mechanics will feel bewildering, but does it mirror the culture shock of newly arriving at a futuristic metropolis?

If this description makes you curious, if you have an interest in techno-futurism, if you are a fan of eighties cyberpunk, then maybe you will enjoy figuring out your way through AvertCity. The game has the pulse of the novels of Gibson and Stevenson, with biting, anti-establishment humor. I recommend it, especially because the developers are so forward thinking with their support for gnu-linux operating systems.

This game has some serious short-comingings. The interface is a bit obtuse, and the player is largely left to figure out the game-mechanics, like when an advert action fails. I even tried helping by writing a steam player guide. The game depth is not even super-deep, and the later-part has only some minor twists in the gameplay. There are so few actual story-elements, even while the descriptions hint at what might be happening below the skyline.

This game requires a bit of computer resources, with the default settings, despite the store page sysreq info. My 2GHz 2GB desktop cannot run this fast enough to be playable, which is strange because the install size is very, very small. Changing the options improves it, to be accessible by a low-end CPU.. Anyway, I wish there was a demo for you, considering the full-price is a bit more than typical, but I think this is worth a chance if you are into this kind of thing.

I played this game on an ubuntu linux computer, with 8GB of memory and a quadcore cpu. This game uses the keyboard and mouse for navigation. My graphics card is a RX550 with radeon mesa graphic drivers. Bottom line is that this game is recommended only for gaming-afficianatos looking for something very odd and interesting, who are willing to polishing this gem. I don't think the twenty-dollar price gets discounted any more, so it will be a hard purchase for most other gamers.

You know some tycoon games make you feel like you're doing something important? This game doesn't do that. Also the devs are gone, so no updates. Look for reviews from the last year for an idea of the current game's state; it isn't finished, they just don't care.

This game was built on a great idea but the UI is quite bad, it's extremely hard to get to play the game, the graphics dont mean much since they are more for information than visual effects. The game is obviously not playable I'm sorry, they need to make a better game with the exact same idea.

seemed like a cool idea, waited around for a long time until it was on sale and grabbed it cheap. tried to figure out how to play, struggled to read the text, never had anything meaningful click with me, did not enjoy any portion of the game, refunded.

This game has a unique style, the devs put a lot of effort into details and the game mechanics are simple, but far away from easy. You are looking for an addivtive, immersive experience? Go for it!

But to backup the critics. I think the price take (without discount) might seem too high and the uniqueness in style and interface might put-off mainstream gamers.

Great concept, shallow gameplay.
On the positive side, the game has a fun idea. You're an advertising corporation and you make money by advertising for other companies. Rival companies don't like you advertising for the other company and the city does some shifting around in power, corporation sizes and values, and other aspects. In particular, you can advertise for a company properly and increase its power as well as how much it likes you, and make more money. Or you can screw up an ad campaign for a company and sap their coffers dry, making them cheap and easy to take over. The game world is not static and there's clearly a lot of factors that change values. You can buy new buildings, move your headquarters, expand your influence, and generally seek to take over the whole city.
On the negative side, it's just not terribly fun. You're faced with a clicking frenzy with no way to really ease up on that burden. Pick the most populated buildings, or in cyerspace pick most visited webpages, and do all the advertisements you can. There's no pausing, which wouldn't be an issue if the interface gave more information. A building with 1,000 people looks the same as one with 10,000 people. There's no way to identify what corporation owns what building on the fly. And there's a wall of text on little details that I didn't get to reading because my bank account is evaporating as I try to speed read. It also just doesn't feel like there's much to do once you have the right idea.

I really do love the concept and the cyberpunk feel is a great pleasure, both in music and display. As much as there's a lot of interesting data you can sift through, the lack of a pause button to take actions leads to frustrating spam clicking. Unlock a couple of advertising techs and you soon realize it's just a grind.

Overpriced. It looks better on screens/vids than it actually is ingame.

It is not a propper tycoon game, however advertising is good idea, implementation this idea into product failed. This is more of an old text game with poor font, interface and controls. Looks like nice cyber graphics of nowadays games but inside it is more of old engine game. Something like if you want to implement graphical surroundings into an old text game. IMHO if they did this game more like a text sim the controls would be better. This is kind of chaotic. Bad optimization for high resolution LCD panels.

Not that bad game, may be entertaining, but not for this price. 5€ max! Maybe even less..
Recommended to play with Gunnar Optics.

Impenetrable, nonsensical and poorly designed, the interesting concept is not nearly enough to justify the price of this game. The UI is shoddy to a point that approaches unusablility, basic actions require physically finding poorly defined spots in the city and clicking on unreasonable small and close together options with no immediate apparent option for keyboard control.

You're rewarded by being punished for every action you take. I've started 3 games and each hits a point very shortly in where no matter what I do every campaign is a loser, where even if it makes some cash the company is unhappy with the results and pings my reputation. Why are they unhappy? What went wrong? What can I dod different? When you're gemplay to start consists of 2 advertising options and maybe 2 dozen buildings to advertise on, it should be pretty hard to screw up, not impossible to get anywhere.

Avoid at all costs.

I picked up AdvertCity on a lark, being on both a cyberpunk and management kick at the time. I knew going in that the learning curve would be steep, and after a few false starts I got the hang of making money and expanding my operation. As I moved my offices into a towering highrise and set my sights on rival corporations under the harsh glow of my neon billboards and blimps, I started to feel like I had divined all the secrets of the game and would soon grow bored. But this was soon followed by a realization the likes of which I have rarely had from a game, one that elevates this title to true brilliance.

AdvertCity sets you up as the CEO and sole employee of Adsplay, a startup advertising company in a procedurally generated metropolis. Every building and resident belongs to one of a dozen or so megacorporations that run the city, and you get to make your bones by advertising for them. Starting out with stacks of fliers and a limited range of influence, you can earn new technologies like posters and billboards from friendly corps, buy new offices to expand your reach, hire employees to improve your ads, and so on. There's also an internet view where you can post all manner of cat pictures and spam ads as well.

Each kind of ad has strengths and weaknesses depending on where in the city it is placed, in what kind of building, and for what corporation. This then becomes your chief concern, puzzling out which ads go where to earn you the most money and rep. And it's quite a puzzle, because there's no guide or tutorial to making a million bucks. The scant tutorial teaches you how the interface works and gets you set up with a loan and running the most basic ads for pocket change. You have to delve into the procedural descriptions of buildings, corporations, and even ad technology to understand how to ply your trade.

Making your fortune as a shameless advertising mogul is only half the game, however. Once your company becomes a major player in the city, you can set your sights on seizing control of the other corporations. This is how the game is won, by eventually absorbing all of your rivals and taking over the entire city. At first glance, this may seem like an impossible task, since you'll be looking for something to do with your first million dollars and the smallest megacorp might cost thirty million to claim. You'll also run into a confounding ceiling on how much money you can make from your ads, as the resources to produce them (employees) start to catch up to the profits you make.

That's where I was when I started to cool on the game, with my sprawling company humming along and a few easy conquests down, but the remaining megacorps far out of my reach. By that point the game had started to feel like a more interactive clicker game, with me just spamming my most expensive ads over and over for the biggest returns, still not enough to topple my foes. I was beginning to think there was no real strategy to the game, just a long grind up to enormous cash totals again and again. And it turns out I was very, very wrong.

In my quest for the fattest bank account, I started running nothing but colossal blimp ads as quickly as I could for one particular megacorp. I was earning plenty of rep with them and money, but not nearly enough to buy them out. I started to notice that the campaigns themselves were going poorly and the megacorp disliked them, even though they were paying me for them. I stopped the campaigns once my income peaked, and on a lark I took a look at the megacorp's info. What had once been a company valued in the tens of millions was now worth a measly half a mil and falling.

That's when it hit me: I was running an ad agency. I could help grow companies with good ads, or I could run them into the ground with bad ones. All that effort I made in the early game to learn what worked and what didn't could now be turned around to destroy the very companies that had helped me grow. The economy in AdvertCity was far, far more detailed and complex than I gave it credit for, and provided a wealth of strategies for hostile takeovers. I could tank a company's profits with poor ads, boost their competitors with good ones, buy out their buildings to starve them of employees, or drain their bank accounts by running an endless stream of extravagant ads for them.

It's a brilliant strategy game hidden beneath a rough, if stylish, exterior. The graphics are simple polygons and wireframe menus but fit the cyberpunk feel to a T, and the heavy, oppressive soundtrack is the icing on the dystopian cake. The interface can sadly be a pain to deal with, sometimes letting you double-click through to the wrong options or stack up notifications to obscure important info. Performance can also suffer once your operation gets enormous, and I had one audio mishap that forced a restart the first time I went bankrupt. These are all minor issues around a far more major one, the learning curve. If you want to reach the genius buried in this game, you have to work for it. You have to take the time to read, experiment, fail, and try again until it clicks, and you have to do that at every stage of the game. It won't be for everyone, but those who do delve deep into AdvertCity will discover one of the most clever and rewarding strategy games I've ever played.

I didn't even last an hour with this game. I can see the appeal for some people, but I really wish I hadn't spent so much on it.
PROS:
- Cyper layout is awesome
- Basic game concept

CONS:
- No proper tutorial? It took me forever to find the headquarters, and then even longer to find a bank to get a loan.
- The controls are tedious

If I had played the game for longer I would proberly have more to say. But I just can't force myself to open it again.

Enough people have already pointed out the pros and cons to this game, so I'm not gonna repeat folks or beat around the bush or anything. There's enough of that shit already.

I personally cannot keep my hands off of any tycoon that passes through my line of sight. I really owe this addiction to the SimCity series. AdvertCity is no exception. However, like the latest installment of the SimCity bloodline, I'm finding my self wanting so much more, yet at the same time constantly coming back and playing over and over again. Even when I look at this game in a critical point of view, I find it so darn charming that I wish I could dance with it at the royal ball and then at midnight loose my glass slipper so it can call me up the next morning and take me out to sunday brunch. It really is that good of a concept, and I agree with the developers with their choice of forcing the player into the world with no prior information on how to do anything. Yes, at first it is frustrating to be plopped in the middle of an endless city without remembering how you got there or what in God's holy name you are even doing there, but once you figure it all out, it's a wonderful feeling.

I suddenly hear you muttering to yourself, "But the UI is worthless garbage, it's inexcusable and sloppy..."

"Yes," I say, "but one of the parts of the game that I found enjoyable was trying to find out how to use it and creat an efficient method to the madness that is this diabolical city."

You then return fire with "But the game is so grindy and grinding is stupid."

I then furrow my eyebrows and say "It's a fucking tycoon game. One way or another, there will be grinding. It's inevitable with these types of games. Atleast, I think so."

"It's 20 dollars," you say flatly.

Good point.

But even though I am 20 bucks poorer, I don't feel that dissapointed. Maybe that's because I am easily amused, or maybe it's because I have hope for this game and more like it.

All in all, I do reccomend this game to those who are largely interested in tycoon gaming. If only the game was like 15 bucks cheaper, then would I think that people would be more accepting and more willing to try it for themselves. But hey, if you got 20 big bucks that you are willing to squander, then by all means, knock yourself out.

The game designer has had a clever idea, but has completely failed to consider the player experience. The connection between cause and effect is completely hidden and nonsensical. (Why do so many ad campaigns fail? Why do companies get angry with me when I've risked my own money to promote them, and gained them customers?)

For masochists and desperate simulation-seekers only.
