Man, its hard to pick recommend or not for this review when whether or not someone will like it comes down to preference.
Here's why I'd recommend Mythforce:
Watch the trailer. Be impressed by the well done eye candy and 80's aesthetic. This is what Mythforce is trying to achieve, and it absolutely nails it. Cel shading has been 25 years of making bad and ugly looking polygons and saying 'it looks like a cartoon!' when it never did. Mythforce is the first time I've seen something actually pull it off, and Beamdog deserves massive credit for that. Mythforce honest to God looks and sounds like an 80's cartoon down to some of the stiff acting. Thumbs up for that.
Here's why I don't recommend:
The game itself. I'm not an arrogant gamer and I'd typically never say something like this, but Mythforce is made for casuals. Its a very light, easy take on Left 4 Dead style shooters. Not that difficult. Very simple and repetitive. Each room is an arena with enemies you've got to clear to move onto the next. Beamdog is still working on the game, and they're trying to add more variety to it. Despite these efforts, Mythforce is as deep as a puddle and tends to be as dull as dishwater. If you don't mind its simplicity, the game might click with you. If you're looking for something deeper, faster, and more complex, you likely won't like Mythforce.
Mythforce goes on sale for 50% off a lot. $30 is kind of expensive for a game in a congested genre where other games do the same thing better for cheaper. The user base is also very low, so you're likely not going to match with anyone unless you're playing with friends.
I guess I'm hitting recommend when I shouldn't. Mythforce may be too successful in trying to be like an 80's cartoon. Meaning just like crappy forgotten 80's cartoons named The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, all the effort went into a catchy theme song and an eye catching intro in service of a product that is not anywhere near as good as it was hyped up to be (to be fair, Mythforce is NOT as bad as the crappy cartoons I mentioned...)
In fact, I'll leave an example of bad 80's cartoon habits.
Watch and listen to the following video:

Amazing stuff, right?
Watch ANY episode of that cartoon, it is PURE garbage. NONE of the energy or effort went into the cartoon at all.
game should be called midforce
Fun co-op game! Super enjoyable fast and furious combat with the 80's cartoon setting as icing on the cake. Only wish there was more banter between the characters.
fun game, better with friends
Fun 3 player co-op roguelite
Choose from one of four character classes, each with their own unique abilities, and play styles
Dive into a cheesy retro cartoon inspired realm, to defeat the evil forces taking over
While delving you will find gear to help you through the run, as well as perk/upgrades at the end of each room, all reliant on the RNG Gods
Completing a run rewards runes used to upgrade shops, this allows upgrade of perks you roll for in each run, gear, etc
One of the shops is the constellation this allow perma upgrades to stats like cooldowns, dmg, hp, def etc
At the end of the run you keep gold, runes, and gems, all gear, perks/upgrades collected during the run are reset
Played through on Mythic I and enjoyed it!
While the game is good, it can get bland sometimes, and there are some characters that are missing something to give you that satisfaction
Levels are static and do not seem to change with each play through(working on Mythic III now) which is unfortunate as more RNG in the levels might added more attraction replay for some even if this was a Mythic I, II, III feature
Price is a little high straight out of the box but 100% one you should wishlist and pickup with some friends!
Fun game overall, can sometimes feel bland, but still enjoyable to play!
Very charming and Saturday morning cartoon feel, sounds good, fun ideas and concept, it gave me a lot of hope but sure did not deliver.
In short, the execution is rough and feels like the whole game needs a QA pass and polish. Heck, even the in game bug report has errors for the past 2 updates. Examples:
> Fall damage is inconsistent. Fall off the top of a stair case, 10 dmg, fall off a small brick beside a chest, 25dmg.
> You can use a slam/lunge but that animation frequently gets caught on walls, door frame, randomly throwing you up a wall higher than where you were and take more fall dmg.
> Weapon swap needs to wait for animation to finish. Usually that is fine but some animations have longer delay after the visual is finished, if you get hit by an arrow or dmg over time, it resets and stops the swap.
> All enemies seem to have a little hop or head juke making ranged weapons very hard to use as a primary.
> Attacks that show a circle area usually hit in a much larger area around it. Sometimes the animation is larger than the target, sometimes not and sometimes you take damage outside of the area.
> Some enemies and even bosses feel like they will ALWAYS be 25% faster than you. Walk to chase them and they keep a same distance ahead of you, sprint and they keep that same distance gap.
> Store costs are, odd. The refresh or change items cost is so high, you usually have to either pick 1 or 2 items, or waste all you gold on a refresh and be unable to buy something. So why even refresh?
> Power-up and curses feel inaccurate. I got a "50% less potion drop" and see 3-4 potions for the next few stages. Next run get a power-up to see more potions and don't see a single potion for 5 stages. Power attacks do 70% more damage - power attack skeleton before for 440, and after to 660 (50%).
> Player animations get stuck causing you to be unable to take action. Shield throw frequently bounces and doesn't come back making you unable to block, charge, bash and force you to wait for the animation to try again. Shield charge if you go over a brick or fall can lose your weapon making you unable to attack. Mage gets interrupted and projectiles disappear mid flight. Boss can hit through rogue invisibility and get items stolen by thief goblins.
Solo play is not recommended. You can easily get stun locked, unable to move and get swarmed. Most classes are unable to deal with more than 1 enemy at a time or are too weak and get 2 shot in hard + difficulty.
The game was on sale today, so I picked it up to play with friends. I am giving it a positive review because I have been enjoying it, and because it looks like it is still being worked on. So I'll start with the positives:
It looks great. It plays smoothly. The voice acting is pretty good. It's fun to play. The over all vibe is good.
That said, I agree with many of the negative reviews here on a few points, and am hoping that they can be ironed out:
It feels a little like an early access game, not that it's buggy, just that it feels a little incomplete.
First is the lack of level diversity. I have had runs where the same area appears two or three times. Once twice in a row with a vendor in between. The levels are very cool looking and well designed, but definitely repetitive. I'd love to see two or three times as many different areas to explore in. Maybe more. Most of the area's feel very samey, with little to nothing to differentiate them. The first little bit of the game is in the forest, but then quickly changes to crypt type environments, and so far have stayed there.
Next is the lack of monster diversity. It would be cool to see more monsters in the game. Not as big a deal as the repetitiveness of the levels, but it would still be welcome.
The monster AI is interesting. They dodge, they run in, they hang back and shoot, and sometimes it feels like a real challenge, but other times they stand around swinging at thin air, or doing nothing at all. This is a minor gripe, but to me it seems like they could use a look.
Normal difficulty seems a little too easy. I am on the seventh or eighth area, and have yet to die or even come close to dying. I think there is some sort of roguelite system to the game, but I've never seen it.
Some of the power ups are WAY better than the others. The main example I can think of is the one that gives you bonus health for using potions. This is very easy to cheese. Some areas will have 4 or 5 potions drop, and all the player need do is stand in a torch until their life is low enough to take all those potions, and boom, they are loaded with HP. My last run I had over 1200 HP as the magic user. It makes it pretty hard to die when you've got 1200HP.
The mid-run vendor is a kind of a bummer. The stuff he sells is expensive af, and as gold is used for permanent progression as well as for items you lose at the end of the run, it so far has made very little sense to waste it on the vendor. Not sure how to get around that other than having a separate run specific currency that also goes away at the end, so that players have nothing better to do with it that spend it during the run.
Again, this game is very fun, I don't regret my purchase, and I am excited to play it with my friends. I really hope the devs don't give up on it. If they went nuts on just the level diversity, and added in more monsters, this game would be easy to recommend to any fan of the genre(s).
its pretty boring. Wanted to like it because of the 80s style saturday morning type of theme with the roguelike gameplay but this game is lacking some polish
By far one of my favourite Rogue likes, build variety is there, soundtrack is catchy and even the most complicated character is easy to pickup but hard to master. Definitely recommend giving this hidden gem a try.
This game delivers on everything it promises.
The art style, dialogues and soundtrack are on point.
Gameplay is very different for each character.
I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed 80's cartoons as a child.
This game needs more recognition. If it did the GUI would look more updated. But other than that amazing game plays well and love the rogue like concept. 10 out of 10 would recommend again.
If you love 80s era cartoons like He-Man and She-Ra, Mythforce will be right up your alley. Mythforce combines that 80s goodness with a competent first-person battler. Mechanically, it does not do anything radically new, but as a whole package, it's great!
There's a decent selection of characters, each with their own unique special abilities and the combat is quite snappy without being overly frantic. The game is divided into 9 levels with you having to survive through each of them at a stretch. On each run you get to choose power-ups and artefacts to help you through the respective dungeon, but once that level comes to an end, the items vanish and you must start anew. This hybrid between a roguelite and an episodic story was fascinating, and even I who generally do not like the "rogue" genre, had a good time.
The game as it stands has a definitive ending, but there definitely was an indication that they wanted to do more levels (and more story) as a DLC or a season 2 or something.
I am not sure if such plans are still on the cards, but regardless, I had a jolly good time, and highly recommend this to anyone who found what I said intriguing.
Such a fun chill game to pick up anytime you feel like listening to some wise cracks, while crushing skeletons and throwing it back to an old school style. Love it!
80s vibes, good multiplayer, responsive.
I needed a game to play long-distance with my brother and the multiplayer on this is SO EASY. Also, funny and fun, with mixed playstyle options. I play the mage, he plays the paladin. 10/10 no notes so far, would set skeletons on fire again.
