I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
PING 1.5+™ is a badly made, lazy 2.5D/low poly/minimalist puzzle platformer that leverages an Angry Birds style slingshot to move your cube around (yeah, the developer didn't know how to do video game graphics so we just get cubes). So somehow in the game design process, the developer decided to do something shallower than any platformer, and yet also deficient compared to mobile apps like Angry Birds. And then, instead of shredding the concept and going back to working at McDonalds, they dumped this crap on Steam, for money, worsening the average quality of all video games everywhere.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it.
This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all).
Regardless, for all intents and purposes PING 1.5+™ might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. PING 1.5+™ has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for dying (something that playing this game will certainly make you feel like doing), trivial to achieve, but less than 5 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 5 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who weren't even playing the game? Trading cards. Players will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
PING 1.5+™ has the laughable price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
I sat down with this game a bit this morning after being recommended it, by a friend. I want to say first that i am usually not someone interested in these type of games, but due to the friend and the low price of the game i thought i'd give it a shot. I will be writing a bit indepth about everything up top here, and then add a little TL;DR of the pros and cons of the game for people that don't want a longer read.
Graphics:
Visually this game is quite appealing, simple but nice graphics and very colorful. While i usually am not a fan of these kind of simplistic type of cube-graphics, i have to say this looks a bit nicer, since they have made the cubes look almost 3d and at the same time managed to get it to fit very well with the music and atmosphere of the game.
Sounds/Music:
The music in this game is very good, it reminds me a bit of the Hotline Miami soundtrack and does bring up the tempo of the game a bit. If it wasn't for the soundtrack, this game wouldn't be as special.
Gameplay:
The gameplay, as a casual indie game should be, is very simplistic and easy to learn. But it does contain alot more depth once you get into the game a bit. It starts with the easy, pull a line, cube bounces, get it right. But later in the game it mixes it up a bit with having to hold over cubes that are moving in the way, to slow them down, then quickly switching back to your cube and launching it again, which calls for some skill, speed and precision.
There is alot of maps to this game, i only got through the first two worlds and half of world three before i put it down and from checking the achievements i can see twelve worlds.
I think the thing i liked the most about this game, and the most surprising thing was the boss battles at the end of every world. These are really off from the game, but in a good way. The first worlds boss is a circle in the middle that shoots lazers towards you that you have to dodge while bouncing into the circle twenty times. It added quite a few fun mechanics and was a really fun challenge. Now the second boss was even more impressive, as it wasn't really a boss at all. It was a game of asteroids where you had to hit at least 60 asteroids while dodging exploding circles, it took me several tries on this one, but it was a fun challenge. As i said before, i haven't gotten to boss three yet, but i bet that one will also be as interesting.
----------------------------------------------------
TL;DR
Pros:
Good soundtrack
Interesting Levels
Challenging and Fun Bosses
Clever Idea
Cons:
Some of the levels at the start are just insanely easy, and then further forward it just spikes in difficulty.
You lose if you manage to get the cube in without bouncing it first.
I honestly wish the playercube was a ball so i could easier figure out if it was going to bounce off a corner or not.
---------------------------------
All in all a pretty good game. If you like casual indiegames with good soundtracks and got £5 on you, go ahead and get it.
