THE LATEST VERSION OF RPG MAKER SERIES ON STEAM, "RPG MAKER MZ"
THE LATEST INSTALLMENT IN THE RPG MAKER SERIES, RPG MAKER MZ, BRINGS SIGNIFICANT ENHANCEMENTS TO THE FEATURES INTRODUCED IN ITS PREDECESSOR, MV. IT IS A NO-CODE GAME DEVELOPMENT TOOL THAT SIMPLIFIES GAME CREATION, EVEN FOR BEGINNERS. IT INCORPORATES MANY NEW FEATURES, INCLUDING AUTO-SAVE AND EVENT SKIPPING.
About the Software
UNLEASH YOUR PASSION FOR RETRO RPGs
For the first time ever, RPG Maker 2003 is officially available in English! This legendary game development engine is both highly affordable and easy to use, and it remains one of the most popular RPG Maker installments to date. It is the first engine in the series to employ a sideview battle system similar to the classic RPGs of the early-to-mid 90s. If you have always wanted to create a retro RPG with a third-person battle system, or simply are looking for an affordable but reliable game creation engine, then RPG Maker 2003 is for you!
KEY FEATURES
- Side-view Battle System
Most titles in the RPG Maker series center on first-person, turn-based combat. RPG Maker 2003 breaks this tradition by offering an engaging sideview battle system that is perfect for fans of classic RPGs. Creating and managing your game’s combat is as easy as filling in a database and playtesting, with no scripting knowledge required! This departure makes RPG Maker 2003 an excellent alternative for game developers who are not particularly fond of front-view battle systems. - Straightforward Tools
RPG Maker engines are designed to be as flexible as possible while still being user friendly, and RPG Maker 2003 is no exception. Virtually everything in the engine is managed through a simple point-and-click interface. All of your game’s characters, enemies, skills, animations, and equipment are created and stored in an easy-to-navigate database. An in-depth event system contains dozens of functions to help make your story and world come to life, such as custom messages, character movement, player choices, special effects, and more. Plus, RPG Maker 2003’s powerful map editor is extremely easy to master, allowing you to craft your world tile by tile with unprecedented efficiency! - Retro Presentation
Relive the golden age of RPGs with RPG Maker 2003’s diverse selection of 16-bit default graphics. If you’re feeling especially creative, RPG Maker 2003 allows you to import custom 16-bit graphics, including character sprites, tilesets for your environments, battle animations, backgrounds, and more! The engine is also loaded with a variety of catchy midi tracks and sound effects for your game; custom MP3/WAV/MIDI tracks can be added as well. - Share Your Game!
Want to share your creation with the world? You can export your creation in a portable file that can be played on ANY Windows system! Plus, games made with RPG Maker 2003 can be sold as long as you have the appropriate rights and have followed the registration procedure. With some hard work you could become the next great indie game developer!

RPG Maker 2003 is a great tool for young aspiring game developers, especially those around 13 or 14 who want to create simple games without feeling overwhelmed by more complex engines. My tip for getting started is to find a video tutorial you can follow along with, even if it's not specifically for this version of RPG Maker, it will still help you understand the basics. While this won't be the software you'll stick with forever, and you'll eventually outgrow it as you progress as a developer, it’s an excellent starting point. It allows you to learn core programming concepts while taking care of the more complex tasks, so you can dive straight into the fun part of game development: creating a world and telling your story with almost immediate results!
Are you plugged in?
Alright, ready?
One, two, a-one, two, three!
I don't play video games no more
I never play video games
Except for little bit of God of War
Never play video games
I made the Hyborian Age in an over world map... $1.99 on sale was TOTAL WORTH it by MITRA! what a fun easy and simple 16bit game maker!!! I can make my Barbarian game now!
A tool is only as good as the player who uses it.
RPG Maker 2003 is awesome because you are able to get into making your own game as a beginner, and depending on how innovative you are you can do some really cool things and make some really nice looking maps.
If you are thinking of picking this up, I strongly recommend you read the user manual under "Help" because they do not leave many stones unturned, it is well written and definitely helpful!
Edit: It is probably worth mentioning that I do not think Steam has been tracking the hours I have clocked in on this, probably because I have it saved as a shortcut to my taskbar. Either way, I can't recommend this product enough.
Ok here goes for my review for this software, I've actually used RPG Maker 2003 way more than what steam says because I use it with a community patch called maniacs outside of the steam environment(I also already had the non steam version of RPG Maker 2003 before getting this version).
Pros over other RM Engines:
=======================
3x3 Auto Tiles
More Advanced Event System
(do more without coding knowledge)Better performance on older hardware and lower spec computers
Has Midi support for BGM
(this is if you want to optimize for file size, Midi file support was dropped after VX Ace)Engine is Cheap
Small File Size
(just over 1MB with a blank game, RM2k is 750KB is your curious and want to go even lower! This is all without compression btw)------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pros with the two popular community projects
(all thx to the patch eula!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With Easy RPG Player:
==================
Games made with 2000 and 2k3 are able to play on multiple platforms
including Android and through a web browser.OGG Support
Better performance on modern PCs
QOL features such as Fast Forward(like in emulators) and Support for input devices
Has some support for Maniacs Patch
Still getting support and actively being worked on
=================
With Maniacs Patch
=================
Support for OGG BGM and Sound Effects
An Extensive expansion to the base eventing system
(tbh it's getting very close to just being another programming language while keeping the easy eventing system structure)Direct Programming via the TPC System
(and now some javascript support)Ability to change font, customise windows and change game screen size
within the database(similar to MZ)Better performance on modern PCs
Still getting support and actively being worked on

Cons of RPG Maker 2003
=====================
Old interface and aesthetic is very Windows XP,
but that doesn't affect the engine itself and it's capabilities, just preferenceImage Files have to be 8 bit,
a max of 256 colours per image file(however every image can have different 256 colours from each other). This won't actually affect most people as it's very unlikely you will use a palette larger than 256 for pixel art and most pixel art tools have a palette size of 256(8bit) anyway.16x16 Tiles
not only this but your limited to one image file per tileset, while in MZ for example, you have up to 9(this method changed after XP with VX). This can be good or bad depending on user preference.Harder to find third party resources,
while it is possible, it is definitely harder to find resources and tutorials for this than for say, MV and MZ. However there is still a strong community for this engine which will help you if you ask for it.---------------------
In Summary
----------------------
While for more modern style games you'll be better off with RPG Maker MZ, if you want to make games purely with eventing, want to make a retro style game(particularly from the SNES/Megadrive era and earlier), keep your final export size as low as possible and/or enjoy low level tinkering then this is the RPG Maker engine for you!
fun! :3
i love this is one of my fav rpg maker really fun^^
Its really hard to navigate if you haven't watched or read any tutorials. But I get that this was probably made for people that know what they are doing (I have no clue). I watched a youtube tutorial and was able to make maps and simple events, but I still don't understand most of the features. Though overall I like this software a lot, the best part is the pre-made music and sound effects. Most of the time I open rpg maker just to listen to the music (It's so good I cried to it). Maybe one day I'll actually make a game to use it in.
An amazing program, probably the most easiest RPG Maker engine I've used.
It is amazing. I love this
great
rpg maker... good tool, best friend
A really, REALLY fickle piece of software imo. Importing custom textures/assets is a nightmare and overall it's just not a very beginner friendly piece of software/engine.
I'd recommend buying one of the later editions instead of this one - XP has been working wonders for me so far and has tons more features to boot. Many great things were done with RPGM 2K but it's best left untouched.
Very fun
You will open this software and wonder why are things the way they are. You'll struggle to figure out how to make an autotile properly (Especially the animated water autotiles). You'll scream at the fact that you cant just type into the editor, and a lot of the code is done through DROP-DOWN MENUS.
but then, these quite intense limitations will start to embed deep into your subconscious mind. and you'll be going about your daily activities when suddenly you get an amazing idea for a world that nobody has ever tried before.
You will have a love hate relationship with rpgmaker 2003. That's just how it goes.
It really puts the 0/10 in 10/10
It's A Good Software For Making RPGs. Only Problem For Me Is Importing Spirtes Is HARD. Besides That I Recommend Buying It!
sucks
Still a great tool even after two decades after it's initial release, I love it!
I LOVE making games with this!!
I bought this software when it was on sale, just to see what it was like. After playing around for it a bit, I was quite surprised how easy it was to use.
Pros:
Easy to use
Can make old school JRPG games with this
Lots of tutorials available online
Lots of 3rd party resources available online
Cons:
The newer versions of RPG Maker look significantly better.
love this game, can't wait for rpg maker 2004
I really like this it makes it simple
Been using this software on and off for two decades at this point. Is it basic? Yes. Do other things do what it does better? Yes. But honestly I think 2k3 is the best when it comes to just getting things out of your brain onto the screen. If you want to make a SNES style RPG and you have a community college command of algebra you can do great things with this.
idk what im doing
i left it on overnight and now i have 8 hours in the game
(10/10 would recommend)
I've never had a engine make me both want to work on it so bad one moment, and then open it and instantly close it the next.
