You gotta hand it to him, the protagonist is both the luckiest and unluckiest person to live.
In short, if you like any of InvertMouse's other works, you will like this one too. It is short, but is well worth the price point. It has a fantastic story, comedic yet profound writing, and has amazing visuals!
Story of a little boy who is sold into slavery to a king and ends up assigned with serving the king's "treasure".
I like the concept of the story, and the general idea of the multiple endings involved, all easy to achieve through one of the few choices that appear throughout the story. However, the story builds up way too quickly and feels very rushed, and has a fair number of plot devices and holes, especially in regards to a little slave boy fairly new to the job executing this off.
Artistically, the novel is ok, the characters are decently drawn, they bland and stiff, and so are the backgrounds. There is also a dearth of CGs and poses.
The choice of music is passable, but is not the best and certainly unremarkable. No voice acting included is a minus too.
Overall, the visual novel is average, with a full price that more or less fits the bill, though I would still wait for a sale before buying it. 6/10
had some intriguing concepts that ultimately fall flat. all endings are unsatisfying... wish this novel had turned out to be more than was.
A genuinely good storytelling, with good art and interesting characters, Cursed Sight tells the touching story of Miyon, a girl who was born with a rather unique curse.
I will refrain from mentioning anything more about the story, because I couldn't hope to give a better delivery than the authors did, so do yourself a favour and read it! The writing style is more or less verbose, but in a good way. The main character has a witty sense of humour which entertains you and keeps the mood in the correct place througout the story. The characters are credible and the main ones are well developed. The art is consistently good as well but remains undisruptive throughout the game.
There are 3 endings, plus a "true ending" which is unlocked only after the other 3 endings have been completed. There are only 2 choices in the whole game and I wish I had more control over the protagonist, but that's the only negative thing I could say about this VN.
Linux port was great (Renpy) and achievements were also right on spot. Plus, cards!
Actual spoiler: I'm not crying, you're crying!
This was a good but dark visual novel. If things like the horrors of war bother you skipping Cursed Sight might be your best bet. On the other hand if you like interesting characters and can put up with a hefty dose of awkward pacing it's a decent way to waste around eight hours. Every ending here is a degree of sadness, so you'll remember this one for a while after it's gone. The character you play as starts out a brat but grows throughout the story which is great as you'd otherwise abandon the game - yes, Gai really is that annoying to start with lol.
One story arc should take you roughly three hours, save scumming should cut it down to around seven total. All achievements work fine. Note the game doesn't support 1080p resolution, the whole thing is letterboxed like an old non-widescreen TV show. Stunning visuals and a soundtrack whose DLC you might be tempted to buy.
Worth a buy when on sale, a solid consideration at current list price if you're into VNs with some oomph.
Developed by InvertMouse
Cursed Sight is the 3rd visual novel which features mainly about Gai & Miyon who are struggling through their own "cursed" life as a war on their own nations approaches, which forces them to "decide" their fates for everyone which means harsh sacrifices is somethimes needed.
I personally enjoy reading it as it emphatize the values of "curse" & "blessing" emotionaly.
Mildly not recommended. Nice story with problematic pacing; good visuals; average music; weird analogy. Maybe grab it at a sale like I did. A single run of the story took around 4 hours. Note: this is not a Yuri story.
I think this is yet another textbook example of "depicting the eastern world through the western eyes", and the story itself is also kind of all over the place. There are definitely pacing issues, and some of the twists are a bit disorienting. The story is overall unsatisfying. It seemly intends to make you think about something after reading the story, but I'm afraid that I didn't get it...
I had this lying in my library for three and a half years, then this sunday night, I decided to read it out of boredom. What started as ten minutes of annoyance at the characters for being so unlikable turned out to be pretty absorbing near 4 hours, with character growth and twists and turns. All of the endings seemed to be lil' all over the place, so to speak, but after everything was said and done, it was pretty good story. Figuratively speaking, I laughed and I cried; I'll give it a thumb up~
Kind of a low rate game with a clunky start and unsatisfying endings. I am honestly surprised it has so many positive reviews. The writing is awkward and difficult to look past. The story is kind of limited and doesn't really explore some very obvious solutions to my mind. And instead traps you to bad decision making and tries to convince you this is "fate" I guess? Anyway, I played it because I already payed for it, but I don't recommend it.
Cursed Sight is a pretty overrated story, and there's not really even that much to say about it.
The MC is a temple servant who meets a girl with special powers and a cursed sight that will kill anyone if she takes off her veil. They become important in the battle between east versus west and a reomance subplot develops. The story progresses in fits and starts and never feels very cohesive or emotional, at one point jumping ten years in a single hand-wave sentence.
The MC has a miserable personality and despite the old fashioned setting, speaks like any sarcastic, miserable young person on the internet. Some of the side characters are more intersting but never get much deveopment time.
There are muiltiple endings, all of which are pretty bad- both in terms of enjoyment and the fates of the characters. In fact, the writers seem to relish giving bad ending after bad ending as if it makes the game more profound. Even the final "good ending" suffers from the no-win-scenario syndrome but at least it feels somewhat conclusive.
The art style is okay, occasionally good, but there's an extremely small variety in backgrounds and characters, and the characters we do see are not very expressive. Nothing terrible, but very simple.
I'm left feeling nothing in terms of emotions, and thinking more about how the story could have been improved than anything that actuall happened.
Please note: Game was left on at some point in the past for trading card purposes, so you can expect about 2 hours of read time.
There were some strong points to this game, especially the art and music. However, its not enough to make a good game.
The biggest issue I had with this game was the writing. It was choppy and inconsistent, especially tonally. The protagonist was very annoying, and his commentary on everything was pointless. The first portion of the game before any choices in particular was very difficult to get through-it was way too long and boring. The story is weak, and I didn't care at all for any of the characters.I was really determined to stick it out and get all endings, but it really wasn't worth it. This game's writing really needed some major editing, all across.
This is an interesting game. You are a slave. As such, there really isn't much of a good ending coming for you. In fact, three of the endings are bad, and one is... not so bad? I mean, there is a good ending for someone you care about, but... not for you.
It is an interesting experiment, if nothing else. So, I shall recommend it for that.
Also the art isn't bad, either, so if that is your thing, go for it. (I happen to have an issue with not buying every DLC I can, so...)
I bought this game on sale thinking i would play it further down the line, so when i was looking for a visual novel with some achievements (9) i thought well lets give it a go, i had never heard of the developer before i did not know what to expect it was just another game in vast collection of over 4000 games .... or so i thought.
After completing the game/reading/visual novel last night the one thing i instantly felt was i needed to leave a review on this game, i don't want to do the normal and tell you about the story or write a book review like others have seemed to do, i will not ruin the experince for you, nor will i complain about the length of the game, i played for maybe 7 hours striaght the game was worth its money.
I felt that i would take this moment to thank the dev for such a beautiful game i will also add that i hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel ....
I am a man who is out of his 20s, it's not easy to get me emotional with games or even to show emotion with fictional characters, but this story read like it was non fiction and based on a true story, it knew where to pull at your heart strings it brought you closer to the characters and even nearly reduced me to tears at certain stages reminding me that i am but human afterall, it even picked on a subject that i had thought before.
Obviously there is different endings as i only found out after playing the game, i didn't read the achievements or seek for reviews i went it alone, and was luckily enough to place saves right before the choices took place, of course the first ending i recieved wasn't to my liking although it could have been for some,i played through the other choices but it did not sit right with me, for once i kinda wanted the "lived happily ever after ending!" but well this is life and it was somewhat relistic, i will however that the artwork for zeek first made me think that he was a girl that had short hair especially because he was around 10 years old ... he kinda reminded me of "trouble" from "grimm" or lamorna from scott pillgrim.
I thought i had found a bug in the game when i came across a text box which just had question marks but luckily i saved before it as it was something you unlock later in the game, nearing my bedtime of that ripe time of a 5am i thought i would complete the final ending in a mater of minutes however it seemed that it added another hour and a half to my plathrough so i didn't get bed till 6:30am even though it was pretty much getting up time for some all i could think of in my head was "wow what a beautifully wrote game i need to review it" so waking up at 12.30 after having only 6 hours sleep rushed to do just that, thinking i don't want to ruin the experince for anyone although there's plenty of reviews and youtube videos out there that can do that better and some people just watch another and never buy it themselves.
Knowing that my review is just a mere single droplet in a rainstorm i would just like to take the the opertunity once again to thank the story writer and dev for peicing up such a beautiful story,
I'm sure some people could complete it in a lot less time but i put it on a speed where i could read and asborb the story and had it on auto,
So if you wish to take a chance get a beautiful story maybe get some tears in your eyes, spend the few quid and buy the game, and if you flame it with a dislike or it does nothing for you, you quite possibly are a hollow person as it bursts with emotion!
The main protagonist, Gai is sent away to Miyon’s temple by his parents where he must endure his new life as a slave. Gai can be irritating due to his young age. During the time skip, I still didn’t like him especially because of a particular scene. I will not go into details to prevent spoiling the story. I felt that the dialogue was lacking and it was out of place at times. The artwork along with the music is beautiful. I enjoy the visual novel, but it could have been a lot better. The length is 2 to 3 hours long. If this is too expensive for you, then wait until it’s on sale to purchase.
The visual art and soundtrack is quite good for this game. I recommend buying it in the sale tho, story seems a bit short for me.
Laconic Review? Short, sweet, and savory.
I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of it; if I had to give it any negatives, it would be the fact that a lot of the character development, and indeed, the narrative flow itself, can be a lot of "go" with no "stop", and some of the asides made by the narration of the PC are a little awkwardly anachronistic (A certain chainsaw one had me rather baffled as to the setting) but overall these issues are overshadowed by the strong grip the plot has on the reader as it sinks its talons in from the very beginning, as well as the music and the art, which I rather appreciated on their own, and in concert with the story itself, I really liked it.
Feels were had. I will not deny it.
The music and the art are really good for an indie game. However, writing needs a lot more work. It felt clumsy and choice of words were weird or didn't really suit within the story.
To me, it looked like the writer doesn't have much experience, or is very young. Having good beta viewers or editors for the text would have been a good idea.
It looked good, but I just couldn't enjoy it, because writing and good characters are what I look for in my visual novels.
This VN is so beautiful. The art, background, songs… Everything is amazing. The characters were nicely created too, they all have their fears and unique personalities. But it’s also SO SAD. God, I found myself actually crying a bit after finishing this game…
InvertMouse is one of my favorite indie game developers, and her works never disappoint me. 10/10!
Personally I found this unenjoyable. I may not have gotten as far into it as others but, dear God I hate the main character. Putting up with him is a pain and you get his commentary on everything.
Maybe I dropped off before coming to the good parts but I just could not listen to him bluster or whine or even talk anymore. And in the time I played I do not believe I got any input into the actions of the character. I just read a log of his thoughts for close to an hour. They weren't exactly gems. And no other character picked up the slack. I just lost interest. Things change so quickly that the characters aren't exactly consistent, this is really because of time skips. They just dump you with a changed relationship with people. It's rather annoying.
This game gives off such a mixed bag of emotions its insane really. It explores levels of emotion and ties between people that is rarely explored by devs, VN authors or anything at all, the reason for this is that its easy to mess up when going into these sorts of topics, i cant say what they are because they are spoilers.
So Cursed Sight is a bit janky at the start, you may or may not be annoyed as the protagonist starts as a 10 year old, as you can imagine the life of a 10 year old is simple, we dont have much experience and we are a bit immature and indecisive at that age and that is reflected rather well. Pacing issues crop up a lot at the start, mainly for the first thirty minutes while they try and set the foundations down, this is the maining area of improvement id say because its very short, three hours to finish all endings is very short and the longer you know the charecters the more impacting the endings will be.
On the topic of the endings ill say that two are out right stunning, in a good way. Its because the author can string so many emotions into a set of around 500 words and it can be interpreted in so many ways, its the kind of ending that will be left lingering in your head for weeks as you try to fully compile the various effects and outcomes.
That is where this game indirectly elevates itself from a standard issue VN to a masterpiece, you oddly get many hours out of this because of how much you think about it outside of the game, while its short it somehow becomes longer after its finished.
Many animes and VNs have tried to do something like this, we are talking about stuff like Clannad or From the New World.
On the other parts the artstyle and the general artwork is very good and the interface works as it should. The music fits the scenarios very well but its not too memoriable.
In the VN market this is 100% a sleeper hit. I look forward to the future works from this dev because they have set the bar very high for themselves now.
The one and only thing that i can say is just make it longer to get rid of that sense of it feeling rushed.
Cursed Sight is a visual novel with three default endings, and an unlockable ending after finishing the other three endings.
The novel has exceptional art and music which compliments the setting of the story. Although a bit short, it shouldn't deter anyone from getting this game. It's well worth the money on full price.
The novel definitely did a great job in putting weight on the choices, as one choice would lead to a drastically different outcome from the rest. Although personally I thought Ending 2 and 3 felt rushed, Ending 1 had my jaw drop. Aside from the three default endings, I think the true ending was definitely the best possible resolution to the story.
I look forward to more visual novels from InvertMouse in the future, because Cursed Sight definitely marked its name on one of my favorite visual novels, mainly because of my attachment to the characters, their backstories, and the realistic portrayal of conflicts between two nations. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to immerse in a story with memorable characters and a superb storyline.
Ahh Cursed Sight, I've been following this and the Developer (Invert Mouse, certainly worth following, he makes some cool stuff here on Steam :D) And I'm happy to say that this was an AWESOME read!
There isn't much I can explain about the characters and setting (I really don't want to spoil anything, You need to see that for yourself!) but to give a general idea, this Novel starts off with the Protagonist, Gai arriving as a servant to East Taria, as his Parents from West Taria have sold him off as a Slave to the Temple. He is then assigned the Duty of taking care of the needs of a Girl named Miyon who has the "Cursed Sight" This gives her the power to perform rituals that can alter Fate and various scenarios the Regions ruler may desire.
Onto the Technical Side of things
Audio - The soundtrack is very suiting for both the situations and environments it is used in, it is certainly nice to listen to and really helps add to the experience when it gets to more intense story parts. The Audio REALLY complements these well!
Visual - The backgrounds are all pretty and certainly help you imagine the way the area is designed to be. The characters are also wonderfully drawn and to the standard that many VN fans would enjoy, the art takes a very good approach in being pretty and sometimes cute, but also feeling very powerful and succeeds in conveying character emotion when it needs to.
To summarise - This Novel is certainly worth a read in many ways, Your getting a great reading experience with 4 different endings (the true extra ones the best : P). You'd be supporting an awesome Indie Dev who absolutely deserves positive attention. And lastly, it's not that expensive either, your certainly getting Your monies worth! I can say I enjoyed this Novel a lot and will now be proceeding to buy the Digital Artbook and the Original Soundtrack!
And Lastly, Thanks to InvertMouse for this wonderful story : D
Cursed Sight a visual novel by InvertMouse, the creator of Unhack and Without Within, features 4 endings that are unlocked based on the player's choices.
The Story
The visual novel starts off with the protanganist, Gai explaining his predicament caused by his family, that sold him off too slavery to a temple, and as a slave he is assigned to a girl named Miyon that is treated as the "Treasure of the Nation" who have lost her sight but has the ability to control fate is housed in the temple of East Taria.
I will not be saying anymore beyond here because anything beyond this point i feel it will be a spoiler and i do not want to spoil anything for people that have not read it yet.
Audio and Visual elements
The Audio and Visual elements are great, characthers are beautifully drawn, and the music sets the mood perfectly and it feels like it belongs in the situation and the environment. The backgrounds are beautiful and detailed using a mix of color tones to depict the mood of the scene.
To sum up i would definitely recommend it to fans of visual novels and for those who want to try somethwing new or have a change in pace of visual novel.
In short do not give this visual novel a miss.
