My eyes! MY EYES!!!

* SIGH * God, give me strength with this one. OK, the first thing you should know about STATIC: Investigator Training is that it's not a proper commercial product. More like a small project made by some enthusiasts. And, unfortunately, it shows. But let's not begin with the negative stuff. Because personally, I loved the idea behind this one. For two reasons. First, I'm a huge fan of point-and-click adventures that incorporate video. You know, Roberta Williams's Phantasmagoria, Tex Murphy series, ToonStruck... Stuff like that. Up to this day I find something very appealing in them. Can't say what exactly, but... You know how it is. It's just funny and cool having those real actors in video games.
As for the second reason, I always felt that the idea of ghost chasing is criminally overlooked in the genre. Remember the game called A.M.B.E.R. Journeys Beyond? Designed by Susan and Frank Wimmer, it was one of those games that jumped on popularity train of games like MYST and 7th Guest. As usual with such titles, our hero arrived at some abandoned place in order to uncover hidden secrets. What made A.M.B.E.R. different and unique is that it allowed us to play with some interesting ghost-detecting tools. And it was both funny and spooky. Place one of your toys in a room, leave and then monitor the activity by using your cool-looking helmet. Nowadays we can watch our cat doing its cat business at home while we're out by using security camera and smartphone. Back in 1996? Back in 1996 some of us were monitoring ghosts by using A.M.B.E.R. device.
Unfortunately, even though paranormal activity is a pretty common motif in video games and we even got ourselves some juicy VR stuff, almost nobody tried to play on that certain effect. The effect of being spooked by things that happen while we're not present. By the things we can't see. I mean, monsters are one thing. But things that can't be seen? The whole different kind of spookiness. STATIC: Investigator Training tries to achieve exactly that. It gives you five tools (you can only choose three to use in your current playthrough) and it wants you to track ghosts. Personally? I think it deserves some praise for that. Checking the temperature, recording sound and video, doing some other things of that kind? It's just... interesting. On paper.
Unfortunately, it's time for reality check. Since it's obvious that this game was made by amateurs, let's be honest, it fails at pretty much everything. And I'm not talking about the fact that it looks cheesy as heck. The way it looks, the way it sounds... Everything here screams “cheap porn!”. It's not just one thing. Like the way people are dressed, the way people talk... The entire atmosphere makes you wonder when they'll finally undress and start doing things. And before you ask, no, it's not about lookism. It's about those certain vibes that ruin the whole thing. You may call it a “b-movie effect” but somehow it's more than that. If that's a b-movie effect than the movie is Aliens vs. Titanic. Don't watch that. Don't even google it. Bad for your mental health. But keep in mind, this game feels... wrong. Deal with it. They tried. They failed. And it doesn't look like they tried hard enough. I mean, come on! The lady who plays main character can't even stop smiling while walking around! What were they... Nevermind. Like I said, the real reason why this game sucks is not because it feels wrong, but because it's... a bad game. Simple like that.
Some may end up being displeased by how dated this game feels, but that I actually liked. The fact that this game doesn't have an in-built hint system and stuff. In other words no “press space to see things” here. For me, it's a good thing. That kind of stuff always ends up being the last straw to me. Turning the Internet off and pretending it isn't there? That I can do. But pretending that there's no button that can help solving the game? It's just way too much for me. In other words, this game does let you experience it in a proper way, but the thing is – there's nothing to experience here. Literally. Nothing. Sure, you can use tools, watch and listen stuff, etc, but all of that serves no purpose. At all. To finish the game all you need to do is less than ten simple actions. Everything else is optional. And no, it's not satisfying either and you won't learn anything interesting by using everything on everything. The tools are just the idea that didn't become anything real. And without those? It's just a couple of items here and a couple of laughably poor puzzles there. Nothing else. That's what really wrong with this title. Lack of content, lack of puzzles, lack of story... Lack of everything.
Duration-wise, at very best you'll spend an hour here. That'll be more than enough for you to deal with all the mindfarts you may get. If you're a fast thinker, though, or just using a walkthrough, half an hour will be more than enough. This game is that short. You leave the house, you visit graveyard, boom! Credits roll. Is the story any good? Nope. Just some random dead people. Don't expect anything Blackwell-like here. Just don't. Even though the guys behind this game did try to do similar things with presentation (music and stuff), like with everything else in here, they failed pretty hard.
Finally, a couple of words about technical part. Controls are terrible. It looks like the game was made with mobiles in mind and I did see mobile platforms mentioned on some resources, even though I've never actually seen a mobile version. Looks like the one was planned and ultimately canceled, but still left us with some terrible controls that'll often make you move from one screen to another against your intentions. Can't say the game is unplayable or something, but it will make you say things like “danged controls...” pretty often. Finally, the game can freeze and / or crash now and then. Most likely, you won't have enough time to experience any technical difficulties (the game is too short, remember?), but still, those are there.
So... What's in conclusion? Well, I can't say STATIC made me hate people who made it. It looks like they love the same things with me and, let's just admit it, attempts to provide people with the proper old-school point-and-click experience are always welcomed. But no. You don't need STATIC in your life. Even if you're die-hard fan of the genre who already played everything in your Steam library, the answer is still “no”. You don't need this. Even for free. What surprised me the most, though, is that this game still costs $7.99. I mean, what is this? An Intellivision Amico game? $7.99 is a price tag for a decent indie game, not this. Even a bloody SHARK! SHARK! has more gameplay than this. That's probably why it costs $14.99.......... Anyhow, you've got the idea. We're in that territory. And to summarize things – this game is ugly, cheesy, short, overpriced and you don't need it. But high five for the initial idea. Dixi.
When I bought the game I read some reviews before saying that it's seems unfinished and I agree. It feels like they wanted to do more, but at some point they decided to wrap-up the game with what they had. Even like that I still enjoyed because it was very cheap and what is there is cool.
The game also introduced me to a new band (Blind Faith and Envy), so that's a plus.
I don't understand why the devs decided on placing the character profiles on top of the actual characters in the game during discussions. It makes no sense to me. Surely it would have been better to place them next to and within the actual text box itself? Only buy if you want a laugh.
Nice little game for the price. If this seems interesting to you, be aware that it's not about a great story or voice acting. Play it for its ultra cool style, the screenshots are giving the right impression about it. About 1 hour playtime, I was entertained. Liked it that they didn't give a damn about some instagram-like characters in this.
I'm playing this under windows 10 and the game is so slow it is unplayable. Loading from a save game crashes. Tried it with windows 7 compatibility - same deal with slowness, crashed just as I was leaving the graveyard.
I ended up setting my screen resolution to 1280x800 and setting the compatibility mode to windows xp sp 3. Now I can save and load games and walking around is no longer super slow. I probably spent more time trying to get it to work than I did playing...
I was able to complete the game - it's quite short. Some of the text in diaries etc are hard to read and voice recording tool doesn't really sound like anything but static to me. The pendulum tool was quite nice as was the camera.
Overall, I can't really recommend but it does have a kind of hokey charm - if you want to try it - buy it on sale...
A fun little FMV game in the style of old school fmv point and click adventures.
Excellent.
I bought this game direct from the company when it came out and enjoyed it then, but I remember thinking it was far too short.
11 years on and I've bought it again and this time time has changed my opinion. So many games over the past 10 years have been very short and I have gotten used to them, so this one now feels normal length.
The game itself is very enjoyable with the most amazingly awesome actress, Laura Frachette. What an inspired choice of actress they made, all those years ago. You control her as she does her treadmill walk around the house and gardens to discover the mystery, hunt out the ghosts and prove herself worthy of a job.
I see a reference to Gameboomers this time, which I missed before.
A great title and thanks for putting it on steam.
game that would make Ed Wood proud - animated scenes take part during the night, scene with actress were filmed during the day, so while you walk between locations it keeps changing between day and night
it is an old game with all the flaws of games of the era - poor animations, the perspective inside rooms just keeps changing, so sometimes the character is too short for the surroundings, sometimes too tall, it lacks atmosphere and it is really hard to get involved in the story
I wanted to like this game as I enjoy ghostly stories but knew from the preview video that it was pretty lame before I even started, lol..
For a few minutes it was sort of entertaining.
Good thing that I paid under $2 !
Strangely bad though.
I agree with the reviewer who said, for a few euros more one could get the brilliant Lost Crown game which is leaps and bounds above in excellence..
Bought and played, While I did enjoy it. It's sad to know that the people that created it left it at that. Not a game I would honestly recommend to friends, but eh, if you manage to catch it on sale like I did during the steam summer sale, its not that much in all reality, but I would not spend $7.99 US for it though, so I ended up losing just 3 hours game play.
A short, but still quite nice third person FMV adventure game about ghost-hunting.
You can choose three ghost-hunting tools out of six or seven, so there is even a certain degree of non-linearity and replayability. Think of a little FMV version of 'The Lost Crown': you look for the shadows of the lost souls at night, both inside the old mansion and at the cemetry, follow them to their hidden diaries, gather clues as to their past mysteries etc.
One drawback is the game's length - about two hours only. It does indeed look like a demo or a prologue to a big adventure game never made. Still, the story is fun and complete - I would definitely recommend to get it, if not for a full price, then during a sale like this Halloween one.
This is a low-budget indie game, so put your expectations on graphics and FMV fidelity in check, but I found its rough edges to be quirky and fun. It's a unique experience which can be completed in a couple of hours. Essentially, you walk around a haunted house, click on things, do a small amount of inventory usage, and watch a few short video clips. The characters are FMV, and are perhaps the devs/friends of the devs? I enjoyed this game a lot, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys "small" independent games and adventure point-and-click games.
Low-budged, casual FMV-Game. Nothing special, good story with some spooky moments, character-graphics are low quality, FMV sequences are OK. Playing time is 1,5 hrs. Bought it for 1€, its worth.
Not very good, with lots of problems.
The game puts you into the role of a would-be paranormal investigator. As a test you're asked to investigate the house they're based out of.
The game uses FMV's, but does so badly. there is no perspective (the character stays the same size closer and farther from the camera, and tries to use lipsync (badly). During conversations the character images (apart from the lipsync) are pretty much static, yet look like they have been cut out using mspaint.
Apart from that it's a point and click adventure, but short (1-1.5 hrs according to other reviewers).
The narrative is quite cringeworthy at times.
The pricing is crazy. This is definitely not worth the 8 bucks the store asks for it. Luckily (or not) I got this from a bundle.
For 2 euros more you can get "The Lost Crown", another paranormal investigation game, which unlike this game, delivers, and does so for 30+ hours.
Dear Strategy First, why the hell did you publish this?
Short but interesting game about "ghost hunting",the aim is to search for evidence using (your selection of three) "typical" paranormal investigation tools: a camera, camcorder, thermometer, voice recorder, pendulum, and an EMF (electro magnetic field) detector. This is a point and click adventure that utilises, full motion video scenes throughout the game. The story was interesting but could have been fleshed out a bit more, the ghost video and audio recording were very good and will prove interesting for those interested in paranormal investigation. A bit buggy, the game crashed for me several times during FMV sequences.
dont buy this peace of sh*t i would rather spend a pound on my dank pornhub premium account thanks for waisting my time and money gaben you cheeky fat turd refund me now before i cast a black guy on u
First off, this game is short - very short. I only reached an hour plus due to some random wandering around and missing some clues. And visually somewhat rough, but if you're a fan of Ghost hunting, you'll enjoy this little romp through the territory. But otherwise, it's a tossup on whether it's worth the time or not.
this is one of thows games that is for ppl who liked the 13th hr and outher old pc games like that it is not long game and yes it is buggy but i payed $1.99 for it it is worth it if you like the old games
SIT is a short point & click adventure that uses video sequences for animation and cutscenes.
You play a paranormal investigator trainee who investigates a haunted house and the deaths associated with it.
It does not have QTEs, and it does have a proper inventory with tools, so I hesitate to call it an interactive movie. It took me ~1.5 hours to complete, though I guess you could do it in under 1 hour if you rush.
As you can see from the screenshots, the graphics are nothing to write home about, but the voice acting is very nice, and the plot is decent. You get to select some tools to do your investigations with (I chose camera, thermometer (useless) and pendulum), so there may be some replay value if you want to try solving it with the other tools. You also pick up some items as you go. There's a fair bit of pixel hunting, too.
I picked this up on sale and didn't regret it, but I don't think it is worth full price - maybe if they added some more episodes.
Don't buy this game. It is very short and feels like part 1 to a game that never got a part 2. Nothing really compelling about it.
