The least buggy/broken of the Faerie Solitaire games, but also the most boring. It's a real grind. I'm recommending it simply because it's the only finished one with achievable achievements.
I like the concept of the game but there to many restrictions to play. Then when you finish it you have to play perfectly
to keep playing or it costs you repeatedly. Not happy
Buggy, and more like Majong then Solitaire. I loved previous Faerie Solitaire games, but this one is annoying. I am currently hours into the game and am not able to go any further. Just get a message that I "Failed" that level but doesn't give any info on how to pass it. Wish I could get a refund.
I was quite a fan of the original Faerie Solitaire and I'm even more of a fan of the remastered version, so I expected to enjoy this one too. There I was wrong.
The basic premise is that of matching identical pairs of cards to clear the board. Like Faerie Solitaire, the cards are various mythical creatures, and these ones are more detailed and also some of them quite scary looking as befits magical beings! You get extra points through matching identical cards e.g. Red Aces although you can also clear the board by matching the values but not the colour e.g. Red and Black Queen.
Unlike the original Faerie Solitaire there seems to be very little story and there is also very little variation. Thus the game swiftly becomes repetitive. Also, like the original version of Faerie Solitaire you do collect pets and then resources to evolve these pets (sound familiar, Nintendo?) but the process of collecting and evolving is incredibly slow (something the remastered version of Faerie solitaire corrects). You also collect some gemstones which are called 'Lore' - presumably these are meant to flesh out the 'world' as you read little excerpts by clicking on them. Frankly, I thought this was all so boring that there wasn't any point - it could have been vastly improved if they had helped you unlock special abilities etc.
All in all this game very quickly gets repetitive and without things to help you with the game play (the original had 'undo' and 'see next card' functions, and I can't see how the complicated system of 'valor' etc. helps with anything here) it swiftly becomes a grind.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with this one unless you are just planning to play it for a 10 minute session in-between other things as perhaps then it won't seem too much of a slog. I would just buy the remastered original.
Recommended, but with some significant caveats.
If you liked the original game, you'll feel at home with this one.
However- the interesting features such as locked cards and vines are gone, replaced by new (often frustrating) layouts, Skill Trees, and Valors- ways to make the game more difficult with a "Valor" level that has to be leveled up to unlock. Valors are supposed to bring greater rewards with them, but the benefits seemed far outweighed by the sometimes significant limitations some of the Valors place on the player, leading to replaying some hands more than just a few times to pass them.
No story as you play, like the original. Instead you unlock "Lore" that tells the story, often in an overdone and a bit too overblown of a way (at least in the English language version).
NG+ levels are more difficult and contain more complex layouts, some of which are extremely difficult to pass even without any Valors applied, requiring a good bit of luck to get a good deal, and a good number of wild cards to get through.
Valors can be changed at any time, but the changes only go into effect at the start of a new level, and last for the entire level, even if you deactivate the Valor midway through.
The art is pretty, pretty much the same as the Faerie Solitaire Remastered version of the game.
The music is fine, but repetitive.
Drop rates for resources are pretty skimpy, especially considering the amount needed to evolve some of the pets, especially the higher tiers.
It's a fine solitaire game, but far too much grind to make getting to NG+3 fun. Just grindy.
Games that take a long time to complete =/= "good".
Sometimes they just = "too much grind".
Total hours played shows my time to grind to 100% completion.
Others have done it in less (maybe without Valors applied?), others have taken much longer.
Decent time waster, game autosaves when you quit and exit, so it is good for short sessions (you don;t have to replay an entire level if you exit midway through).
Still, too grindy for my liking, with little reason to play once you unlock all of the Lore story bits, other than completing all achievements. Buy on sale, and expect to grind for a long time.
As a big fan of the original this was kinda disappointing. I was expecting it to be more like that, and while I appreciate them trying something different it just isn't that much fun for me. It's a weird mixture of a lack of mechanics (e.g. the locked or frozen cards or vines or whatever from the first game) making it get repetitive, at least for the first few hours, with too much complexity. The skill screen is a disaster, with no way to tell which ones you can currently afford, no useful information when you mouse over them, etc., and it just feels tedious grinding for resources to upgrade stuff compared to the other game. I hope Dire turns out better.
I had some issues with the native Linux version not responding after losing focus, but the Windows version runs fine through Proton.
Also the music is amazing and they need to sell the soundtrack so I can give them/the composer money for it (and so I can listen to it outside the game).
I am disappointed in how unrewarding this felt to play. I think it was a mix of low resource drops, poor RNG card placement, and layouts that exacerbate the RNG issue. Having to spend resources to replay areas just added insult to injury. It just feels like a grind to get anywhere.
It is a different style than the original Faerie Solitaire and took me a bit to grasp the differences. Overall its a good sequel. The change in play style is refreshing.
The only downside is that the rules made more sense after having played it for a bit. If you're a new player to Faerie Solitaire it might actually be easier for you since you would not have any preconceived notions of the game.
As a big fan of the original Faerie Solitaire (I played through both the original and remaster), I was initially a bit put off by Harvest. It reminded me more of those mindless mahjong solitaire games from the '80s like Activision's Shanghai, a genre I could never get excited about. However, despite it's relatively mindless "Match 2" mechanic, there's a lot to recommend it. The art on the cards is great. Music and ambient sounds are uniformly excellent and run the gambit from new age to Studio Ghibli-esque. You accumulate gold which can be used to purchase various perks, there are pets to grow again (though I again never had use for them), and going through the main game took me about 40 hours - and I probably could have spent another 20 more if I were a completionist. I was never frustrated, often relaxed and this makes for a perfect coffee break game to do while multi-tasking.
Do not play this game if you are looking for an experience similar to the first game. The first game was actually challenging and had unique card interactions. This sequel is just a boring match two game. I got all of the lore, but it's boring at best and had very few interconnections. Similar to the first game, it takes forever to grind up the experience for the pets and then you have to hope you get enough materials to evolve them. And the pet lore is also boring and is usually only a few short sentences. As least the first game had an overarching plot and some interesting animations. This game has none of that and is really just a ripoff. In short, this game is boring and the only reason I played for 20 hours was to get all of the lore, which was also boring.
I got the chance to compare 'harvest' to the first installment and I feel like the gameplay compares negatively.
In this one you need to *pair* cards instead of creating sequences. Your choices are much more limited, and I often feel frustration during playing and failing. I ended up coming back to the remastered version of 'Faerie solitaire'.
Otherwise the graphics are great.
The music is overwhelmingly good. I cannot help but thinking of the composer of Secret of Mana at his best.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it - says the proverb. Case of Faerie Solitaire Harvest is the case of "fixing" very nice and relaxing predecessor, making it somehow worse. I have almost 60 hours in previous installment, but this one is just simply not fun.
Dropping the previous set of rules, where you matched cards one up or down, regardless of suit, to match two - is main fun killer. As result the gameplay is much more random, killing enjoyment out of doing huge combos and breaking the quite dynamic game flow. Forced repeating of failed stage also adds insult to injury. I did first stage like 6 times. C'mon, that's not a good experience for new players, even in regular title, not mention casual one like this.
Taking out the story wasn't a nice thing for me too. While it wasn't complex and serious, it added reason for stage changes and offered some art. This one really felt like lack of effort.
And since match two is core rule, Faerie Solitaire Harvest is sadly unfixable and I will refund it. I also won't recommend it even for people who didn't play it's predecessor, as very random nature and forced stage repeating, makes it quite an frustrating experience. And this isn't what I look in relaxing game.
Faerie Solitaire Harvest dumps the pretense of a story from the first game and swaps out the gameplay of chaining together cards of incrementally smaller or larger values for a more basic match-two sort of gameplay. It's' a bit jarring after the first game, and it doesn't lend itself to combos as well, but it's still a simple and addicting brain teaser of a game.
Early Game is a grind, and I can't really say that the game is all that enjoyable. The pacing/reward seems off. Not sure how to put my finger on it, but it doesn't have the same fun factor many other solitaire games I've played do. I wouldn't recommend taking a chance on this unless it has a big sale.
3 hours in, and this game is an exercise in frustration. The game requires you to spend your accumulated currency in order to re-deal and continue a level, even if you know you have no hope *whatsoever* of solving it. Over. And over. And over again. When your currency balance drops below the required amount for a re-deal (1000), it gets even worse - you then have to try to solve the level (which you already couldn't solve in two deals) in one deal until you fail enough times to earn enough, bit by bit, to pay for another required re-deal, which will be wasted because - again - you are REQUIRED to spend it if you have it. And if you don't solve it that time? Guess what? You get to keep playing the same level - you are not allowed to proceed until you have solved the level you are on.
I love solitaire games in general - I play them as a means of unplugging and relaxing, and I appreciate the forgiving, flexible, stress-free experience these games usually provide. I like a card game that allows me to proceed and maybe return to levels later on that I didn't quite ace the first time. Based on those criteria, this game - for me at least - just completely misses the mark.
Not recommended at all.
I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people that didn't play through the tutorial level. The instructions are clear and help you get into this card matching game. It is just that, a card matching game. I feel like solitaire is a bit of a misnomer in this case. It doesn't really feel like solitaire in a classic sense except you're playing it alone. The object is to remove all the cards on the play field, you draw three cards a turn and try to match cards of the same number and color to score combos. When you get a string of over 7 you're able to flip the deck at the end for free (otherwise you have to pay for it using money that you have collected.) A red queen and a black queen can be removed but the combo will reset in that case. You'll find gold and elements on the way and eggs that you can hatch and 'Evolve'. It's a little grindy but not too bad. For me the game fits in that area of when I just want to chill and not do anything too cerebral (think Bejeweled). It's definitely given me more than a few of those 'just one more game!' moments. Overall I found Faerie Solitaire Harvest to be a charming match two game and I had a blast playing it! You might too!
If you buy a game with "faery solitaire" in the title, you shouldn't expect innovative, mind-blowing gameplay. I didn't and would have been quite happy if this one was basically a copy paste of the older ones. The originals had a silly story, some pictures and a solitaire. It's something to do inbetween dealing with global crises.
This one hasn't got solitaire... it's a simple matching game with a vindictive rng that likes cards with the same pictures stacked neatly on top of eachother. Instead of cards they could have pictures of fruit or toilet seats, it doesn't matter, it's matching, not solitaire. Story to laugh at is also gone... just one depressing screen after another (Those 40 locations ? Yeah, behind that green casino-like green tablecloth . No more upgrades or stuff to buy from a store so you can cheat your way out of it either.
They still have the "pets" and turned the whole thing into one hapless grindaton... you even have game+ or game++ or game++++++++ . (hey here's an idea : how about you need to feed them and add another 15000 hands you have to play as otherwise they get hungry and die). Other than that every time you complete a stage, a faery is released after which a pitiful little light floats across the screen and that's that. You can start another 9 hands of matching pictures to see the next identical pixel saying "thank you". No thank you.
I'm a bit sad to give this game a negative review, but to be honest, this game is a big disappointment in comparison to its predecessor.
Their own marketing sentence: 'Just the right amount of relaxing fun and challenge' fits very god for the first game, but not this one.
They cut out some nice stuff like a story (ok, no real loss in gameplay, but it was a nice touch) or the additional store, where you could buy stuff to help a bit against the RNG in such games ... and instead they just enlarge the game, by a huge, continuous stream of levels and combine that with "infinity" achievments (that need you to play trough the levels several times).
Picked it up because I enjoyed the first one as a relaxation game. Wound up returning it.
It's not an extension of the first game. It's a different, and much simpler, mechanic based on matching cards. The first game you could see where the RNG (random number generator) became the dominant factor at higher difficulties. With a matching game, it's all RNG.
There's no strategy at all. Nothing about this is challenging. It's total luck on whether you get an RNG that literally just hands you 22 combos in a row, or whether you have to retry 3 times to beat the same level. Both of these scenarios happened to me in the same short streak of games I played.
They brought back the pets feature from the first game, but at this point, it's entirely just something to grind towards. I don't like games that are this heavily dependent on RNG so I wouldn't recommend it. If the luck-factor doesn't bother you and you just like matching cards, it'll probably be fine for you.
Subsoap makes quality solitaire. This one is a different style than the last so if you don't have either you should get both ;)
Like a bar touch screen game except polished and set with goals and collectibles to give you other things to strive for besides just playing good solitaire.
Highly recommend their last title which they gave a remastered version of for free to owners of the original.
The difference between the two games is in the first game you pull cards off different stack of cards trying to clear the board in numerical order up or down (345432AKQKA). In the new one you are removing copies of the same card number or face card and build combos by removing the same colors (heart/diamond,spade/club). Combos earn you wilds if you get stuck.
The only thing weird to me is the music. It feels to me like classic JRPG music and while it sounds good it just doesn't fit. I'd say it sounds like FF6 cut scene montage and i keep expecting 16 bit characters to fly airships across the screen or some such. So i turned the music off and am enjoying the great solitaire. Time to listen to an audio book while i play instead.
Great solitaire, great company.
