Principles
We built Nimble Writer with a couple principles in mind to make it stand out as a primary application for authors:- Writing without distractions or worrying about formatting.
- Stay more organized with many useful organizational features.
- Materials of reference (such as photos, drawings, scribbles of text, character information, and much more) are available at your fingertips.
- Don't have any limitations to the default array of features. This means full customization, with a fully customizable and scriptable interface. Turn off features you don't need, change the entire look and feel of your writing environment, and much more.
If you are used to writing stories in applications such as Word or other regular office tools, you'll find that Nimble Writer will be able to help you organize bundles of stories and notes together much simpler and faster. In addition, Nimble Writer is able to import some of those old documents and convert them into the Nimble Writer format.
Advantages over traditional software
Traditional writing software such as Word, Open Office or Google Docs are made just for the purpose of writing, so they don't have anything that helps story writers manage their notes and reference material, and neither does it offer much customization. They don't have any kind of chapter management either. Nimble Writer has all of those things, making it a much more productive choice for story writing.Steam's advantages
With Nimble Writer's presence on Steam we can use the power that Steam's platform brings us, such as Steam Cloud. This means that you will be able to save your stories and notes entirely on Steam's cloud servers, so that you can load up your stories on another computer as well, just as easy!Don't forget about Steam Workshop! With the implementation of the Workshop, you'll be able to share interface themes and addons with the world, or just to customize the app with other people's addons! Share creativity!

Seems a bit like old school software in a really good way. It's a great place to write so far! I can't wait to dig into it more!
Finally after a decade of having this, I figured out why it's incredible... it just works! You can write text into it, save it as different chapters (like tabs) and have a Steam Cloud powered saving text editor ready for whatever typing needs you have, and setting the background image to my window is also a great feature --- the editor's colours can also be customised quite a bit to make it just perfect. You can pin this to the Windows taskbar and open it instantly without any launcher or splash screen of any kind and it's resuming my last working document, and closing it is actually a pretty safe thing to do, it reduces the time fumbling around with file browsing dialogs to zero and has become a literal notepad for me, can open it and close it within seconds and save any text I need to, and organise it in tabs. It's pretty brilliant in it's current state. For example AI prompts, social media posts, URLs, it's a great clipboard of sorts, if I were ever to write some long-form document I would probably use Nimble Writer for it now. I can open the program, write text, save it, and close it within like 2 seconds flat. It is seriously so powerful when it's pinned to your taskbar --- I'll probably have this pinned down there forever now! 10/10
I like it. It's easy to use once you figure out how it's setup. I don't think the tutorial did a good job of explaining.
I don't like the text formatting because it uses code, but that may be so it converts to word. You can copy from word to nimble writer just fine, so I don't know why it needs the code in the first place. I also don't like that you can not easily change the color of font. Would love that, especially for highlighting info or distinguishing between chars.
I like that you can open up a file and save multiple files in it for your stories, so you can have multiple chapters, character sheets, notes etc, in the same file. That's the main thing I wanted - a way to organize everything related to a story in one file and access it quickly. I would try this out, especially on a discount.
It writes.
It's not as fancy and shiny as other applications like Campfire, Obsidian, or Scrivner, but honestly - it does the job for a fraction of the cost. I personally love the minimalist and simple approach that combines the aforementioned programs' best features like chapter organization, character/chapter notes, and such with the word processor of Word/Docs.
(You can also customize it with your own background image which I personally love)
Worth the 10 bucks, 10/10.
I really liked it for awhile but then I started getting sync errors. At one point I almost lost everything, thankfully was able to restore. Also, I tried exporting to a .doc but it heavily scrambled the text. I did have to rewrite a substantial portion.
In all, yes, it does get you to write more and without distraction. But it comes at the cost of reliable document keeping.
I've gone back to Google Drive.
This program is great. It takes your mind away from Word, Notepad, etc and clears up your thoughts. I'm about 80 hours into this novel, and it looks like I may get it done in under 100 hours and I have this program to thank. First run and I'm liking it. The drag and drop pictures and placement could use better instruction (in the case if I want to add an image).
I love it!! It's sososo useful for writing, and the achievements just give me more drive - like ofc i need to write 2k words every day for a month to get a shiny jpeg on my profile; my fanfiction account is booming lately!
it has storage features but because you cant resize windows it becomes very anoying to try setup the pages, theres boxes that are there but dont do anything so the layout is confusing at times and a lack of instruction basically leaves you clicking and exploring to hopefully unlock some feature.
Wonderful software for the amateur-author.
I wrote my first book with this software and would recommend it to anyone.
Incredibly good. I own a few writing applications. A few of them are used by professional writers. Nimble writer compares amazingly well with them. Its features makes it easy to use and organize your writing. Not only that, but it is very lightweight. I only wished I didn't have to open steam every time to use it. Other than that, I can't recommend it enough.
Great resource for writters, you can customize everythong and add notes on the side. 10/10
Steam's best writing medium 5/5
I wish there were more features into it.
like the ability to drag and drop For dropping any type of files including support for also images gifts videos music audio files etc documents. that can be used for really any purpose especially to play back some of the footages for like a graphic novel or something for like a game that you're developing or some sort of animation project and or storyboard that would be nice to have.
As well as the ability to fully customize your own fields and add whatever you want to it like a database creator Something like with how you can do a notion and or I think also obsidian and joplin where you can fully customize everything to what you need it for.
Another neat little feature that this can have would be the ability to copy websites fully copy an entire website for references and stuff that you can get whenever you need it. Some sort of Web Clipper that you also can't install on your web browser and it would record or save the entire website nice and neat for you to look back to it and use as reference material for whatever it is that you're making.
Support for AI as well is another feature this could have if I can do all of these things this will be unbeatable cuz it's a very nice neat lightweight program but it's lacking in so many features and the potential to really kick ass but as it stand right now it's mediocre at best!
I wanted to try this for a while and recently it was on sale during the Summer Sale event.
I really liked some of the features I saw in the video and the screenshots, but after using it for a little under an hour I'm planning on refunding.
I feel like for a program that's been out for 10 years with a Dev that appears to work on it here and there- It doesn't have the polish it should. If I'm paying $10 ($5 on Sale) for it, I'd like it to have as many if not more features than what programs I can use for free have.
And I shouldn't feel like I should need to literally create my own settings or download add-ons to make up for the lack of QOL features I feel should be a mainstay on a writing app.
It feels like I'm writing on NotePad with a few extra features.
No autosave? Seriously?
