Although the gameplay is not to my liking, the game delivers what it promises. Actually more than I expected. I was surprised by the gradual introduction of elements and mechanics. The home-made voicing is ridiculous, but that's not a big deal, really.
A word of visual warning though: For a while, I thought the book and tombstones were a farce. That was only because the game launched in such a low graphic quality by default that texts turned into smudges. You might have to visit the options to get the real thing.
Overall a nice concept and I like the genre but I grew tired of the game after 1.8 hours and I doubt I will play it again. If you can get it on sale, it is still fun for a short time, so I am still going to give this game a thumbs up.
Keep you peepers peeled!
A great game to pass the time, certainly worth getting.
Good old fashioned puzzle game with a simple concept and funny dialogue. You'll get a little hooked.
Old and simplistic.
Funny for a moment. Does not invent anything and does it an average way.
Funny till it bugs and you cannot progress anymore..
Buy it at 1$ if you expect to never finish it and wants just to play the first maps for the few it haves to sell.
First few levels, I was in. Delighted, as it felt like MediEvil but with less focus on actiony, hack-and-slash stuff and more of a graveyard vibe. I was ready to keep this, even after it initially set itself to the lowest quality (on my very good gaming laptop) so that I couldn't read any of the text/maps/tutorial instructions and the opening cinematic was dirt quality. Why not allow the choosing of quality before the game begins via prompt?
Anyway, as I said, I was ready to keep this even after that (and the purposefully-awful dialogue), so long as the new morbid surprises and manageably difficult challenges kept coming. I only wanted to play on Hard difficulty to get map pieces to save up for whatever the treasure maps would unlock. But by the fourth and fifth level, I was frustrated, annoyed, bored of waiting for guards to slowly walk back, tired of it taking 2 whole seconds for my character to move away from a grave when a ghost was coming (that defeats the whole purpose of the suspense of it zooming in when you're digging. if you're just going to die anyway, what's the point?)
If someone made a first person version of this concept with more action and MEANINGFUL stealth (like, snuffing out the lantern or hiding in already-dug graves to not be seen, instead of just "here comes a baddie so get far enough away or stand in a beacon of light until the ghost magically forgets about you"), it would be an amazing mix of light-hearted comedy and horror around a very unique concept of grave digging and robbing. I mean, there is so much potential in this concept, but the execution here becomes tedious at best and the novelty of the concept (i.e. the fun of the game) fades very quickly once the repetitive and achingly slow (and clunky) gameplay mechanics ramp up around level 4. That's not even 25% into the amount of levels, and that's why I'm getting a refund if Steam allows me to.
The last thing I said before I rage quit on level five was "this is just monotonous"
Spike and Barley brought me here, and I really enjoyed the game!
Who did the graphics on this?
Lowering quality just lowers the resolution so that even menu fonts aren't readable!
I quite enjoy this hidden gem. Thanks Sterling. The screaming bride is stressful as she hunts you down. When I bought this game I wasn't expecting how much I would end up playing. I even bought a copy for a friend.
I once stumbled upon this game on one of NewfZ gameplays and when I bought I was quite surpised. Going in I didn't aspect much other then a few minutes of play, lo and behold I dug up a pretty nice puzzle game. With ghosts, difficult stages, and the story about poverty with Fagus and Tully I'd say it was a moneys worth.

TLDR: Broken. Cannot progress
All images are heavily pixelated. Mismatch between textures some being much sharper than others. Going into options has the graphics set to fastest and unchangeable. Tried interacting everything within the first room and all that was there was an unreadable tombstone, which I assume has a hint about how to progress, because of pixelization. I tried button mashing at everything and nothing happened. Removed for declutter.
Good game, made with a lot of care, hope to see more from the devs
Terrible voice acting and awful writing. Tries to be funny but isn't. The gameplay itself is boring and repetitive. No thanks.
Its limited, Looks terrible, The sound is terrible, and while they try to joke about this thing is just not worth your cash... even at 5 dollars Id suggest looking else were
The core concept is good, game play is solid, but as a whole could use improvement in quality & quantity.
As far as Gravedigging, English Comedy, or Dickensian horror, there is none. There is grave robbing and bad dialogue.
They put together a good playable game, that you'll still sink a week into, and you should give them you're money because I would love to see them make more stuff. I see potential in them.
The Grave Digger is a good game. I would sum up its positives as follows:
+ Original setting - who would have said gravedigging can be so much fun? :)
+ Good atmosphere - the game can get pretty scary and intense when being chased by ghosts
+ Humor - this is one of the few games recently where I was laughing loud
+ Solid gameplay - you wander through the cemetery, desecrate graves and collect loot, find map fragments to hidden buried keys and avoid / run from different ghosts. There are several ghost types which require different strategies - for instance slow ones which you can lure away and outrun, blind ghosts which can be lured away by noises made by other ghosts (which you need to provoke), etc.
+ The graphics are simple, but the game still looks pretty, especially the different cemeteries with some nice level design
+ Good atmospheric sound and music
12/10 Would pay rent again.
