Love this game. It is simple, straight forward, has plenty of good maps and bots to explore. And it relatively inexpensive to purchase.
Way back in middle school Risk was probably my favorite board game, and given that Lux Delux has apparently been around for two decades it's honestly surprising I've never heard of it until now because I know I would have been obsessed with it. While it's not flashy, this is pretty much the ultimate Risk experience.
The real magic of Lux Delux is the absolutely staggering amount of content for it. That bit on the Steam page that says "over 900" maps actually undersells it because there's actually over 1000 and so far most of what I've played has been pretty good. There's a plugin menu that lets you sort and manage the different maps, I don't think they're all installed at the start since it seemed to initially go through a rotation of official ones, but you better believe I opened it up and and installed all of them (coincidentally I think I may have accidentally DDOsD's Sillysoft by doing this, their site seemed to go down shortly after... sorry guys!). The plugin manager is very well organized too, you can sort by name, author, date, and even the ratings people gave to a map.
Trying different maps and seeing the way people push RISK mechanics to their absolute limit has been a joy. Some of the maps have a highly polished sheen, others are experimental and don't even look like Risk, other are just a crusty JPEG but that doesn't play well at all and the span of two decade's worth of content is honestly just fascinating from a social standpoint so even the lesser maps are interesting. If somebody said "Hey, we made RISK but you can mod it" nowadays in 2023, I doubt there would have been a ton of content makers flocking to it, aside from perhaps people making their own versions of the game on Tabletop Simulator, but circa 2002, I could totally see a huge community forming, and making content for it. The latest map in the plugin manager seems dated to 2015 and Sillysoft's forums seem to be down (even before I may have accidentally DDOS'd their site by downloading all the addons. Sorry guys!), so even being a somewhat recent steam release you get the feeling that you're exploring an an abandoned internet community. It's like playing a real-life Risk-themed version of Hypnospace Outlaw where every map says a little something about the interests of the people who made it. One map that particularly fascinated me was this big treehouse map which on one hand was cool because it felt like you were playing a room-to-room squad based tactics game, but also because every room and territory was some weird injoke and it was frankly way overdesigned and too granular to really flow well as a Risk map.
The plugin manager also has info about the maps from the people who made them, and even links to their personal websites, many of which don't even exist anymore, but you can possibly find on the wayback machine. Some infoboxes have shoutouts to other Lux mappers, who they may have collaborated with or built upon the work of, there's a series of one risk map that got 4 or 5 different versions all tweaked and improved by different people. Sometimes there are little stories, historical information, or just the author writing what inspired them. It's an incredible look into a community that doesn't seem to really be around anymore yet produced a massive amount of work and I really hope the plugin servers stay up so we never lose it. Even just browsing and reading the listings in the manager is deeply interesting, and you can see the game and it's community evolve from the second shareware revolution of the Web 1.0 days, to something to something that became pretty polished and worked it's way into the early days of mobile phone games and survived into modern times, yet seems to have ultimately waned.
But beyond the sociological archaeology of digging through old mods, it's also just a darn good implementation of Risk. The presentation is minimalistic, you don't even see the dice rolls, but it's fast and to the point and still fun to look at. I had a Risk game on the PS2 where the characters would constantly talk and make fun of you and it was just tiresome, so I like the directness of it. The AI is also legitimately brilliant. I've had games where I've lost in like two moves and sometimes you just have to sit back and go "wait, where did that come from?". I feel like I'm actively getting better at Risk because it's really forcing me to consider all the different strategic aspects of the game. There's one map designed to look like a 200 Meter Olympic swimming pool and the whole thing is just a grid of lanes, and I thought it would be awful but it actually proved to be a brain-wracking math puzzle that I loved and I think the more conceptual maps do a great job really getting you to think about the game and it's mechanics.
I always love when I open a game on a lark and the next thing you know 6 hours have passed. I came into Lux looking for a good strategy game, and became enamored not only with trying the various content on offer but also digging into the output of its community. This feels like the kind of game that couldn't really be made today, not in the sense that it'd be bad or unappealing, but in the sense that it could have only picked up a community of such size and output by coming out when it did, and by releasing on Steam in 2015 we now have access to that whole two decade's worth of content fully formed, sorted and organized in one place. Perhaps this is truly the final form of Lux, and maybe it won't grow beyond what it is now, but we have it now and can enjoy it and what it's community left for us, and I hope we never lose that.
Very good game. Remember playing this a long time ago. Purchased it again for that nostalgia feeling.
It's based on the risk board game but better in my opinion. Play ancient empires Lux, it's very good.
Nice risk clone. Quality of the maps varies but there are so many to download you will certainly find enough which topic and set up you like.
A very good time sink... can't find the plug to stop draining my life away. Simple Risk-like strategy game, but occasionally large maps plays out like a tedious tennis match where the ball keeps flying from one end of the court to the other (as powers alternately sweep the map). Interesting design tools and love the "moddability" of the game.
Like risk, but faster and better, who needs a board and pieces when you have the ability to move all your army at once and destroy the enemy in one go! Lux has a loads of maps to keep you challenged, you can play with friends at home or online, the ability to adjust the difficulty of the computer adds another dimension of challenge. Its well worth buying this game for endless hours of fun.
Don't look any further: This IS the RISK game you have been looking for all along!
- It is not called RISK;
- It doesn't have the top graphics quality or fancy UI's of most modern games;
- And most probably you don't have any friends who will want to play this with you anymore;
But this IS the RISK game we all have a strong craving for, once in a while!
And on the plus (+) side: There are at least 1,000 different maps (no kidding!) AND contrary to most modern and fancier-looking games, the AI here IS actually smart and somewhat hard to beat! That alone is a feat that shall be rewarded with a purchase and a try!
And I am talking about the 'medium' difficulty settings. If you want to turn your life into a stressful hell (or prove you are the greatest Emperor to have ever lived), you can set it up on even harder settings. In fact, you can even totally customize each AI's 'personality', from total berserk attackers to annoying stay at home defenders...which will make you believe you have real friends each time.
Yes, battles are RGN's, and luck plays a role in the outcome. But has anyone told you this was: RISK ?! ;)
So if you simply are a fan of board games in general, or just a bit nostalgic of the good ol' RISK game: This is an absolute must-buy!
Probably more fun playing against other people, but honestly I was disappointed. I'm assuming that the game is using completely random rolls when determining victors but it doesn't really feel like it. After losing a 24-man army to a 3-man army, I just shut it down and never really started it back up again. You need to spend some time learning the right shortcuts and whatnot...most of your initial losses will simply be from doing something you didn't intend to do. If there is an undo button somewhere, I haven't discovered it.
Just the right combo of simplicity and challenge. Kept me playing all day the first day I played it. Some maps are a little frustrating, where one particular start point always seems to dominate, but most so far have been excellent.
This is a simple, 2000's era (or earlier--?) "Risk"-type digital board game. Nothing special, but can be entertaining. Graphics VERY basic, so be warned. Seems to run ok, despite age. Lots of user-made maps freely & easily accessible from within the game. Worth a try, but only if on sale for under $3/€2/£1.50. FYI, there's another similar game, Lux Alliance, that features the same general mechanics but with simultaneous moves. It's also not bad, if you can get it for just a few bucks/euro/quid.
This is a single-player only game with an AI that has the IQ of a monkey.
Gameplay:
The game is moddable and that's all that can be considered good, the risk board game idea has been done and redone and better.
The original maps are small and boring because of the pitiful AI proposed by the devs.
AIs have no strategy, they don't protect anything, they put all their units in one area and run like hell everywhere, the next AI does the same.
Either the AI is like the devs or the devs have no talent.
It's up to you, I've made up my mind, but whatever the case, this game is a calamity and yet I've given it a chance. I'm a risk addict, but these devs are incompetent at playing risk.
Some of the maps proposed by the community are interesting and give the game a touch of credibility.
I'd rather play this game on my own at home than play with this AI. That's how unplayable this game is.

I wish there was a "sideways thumb" option. So I'll give it a "provisional" thumbs up.
The game isn't "Risklike", it's just straight up frickin' Risk. The ONLY reason to buy this game is for the incredible number of alternate maps available. Unlike many other boardgamers, I don't hate Risk; I'll play the revised 2008 version when the mood hits me. The same applies to Lux; when I want to play a very lite wargame that doesn't ask a whole lot from me (unlike an immersive game like Twilight Struggle) I'll fire up Lux and try different maps.
If you don't like Risk, you'll think Lux Delux sux.

i contacted to both sides for the problem, none of them were able to help but only blame each other. they dont do refund either because I ve played more than two hours. i wouldn t play if this problem were about to occur repeatedly.

Not a fan, the game seemed to pretty much be arbitrary. Once a faction gained any advantage, they steamroll the rest. That's not fun to me personally, but plenty of people seem to like it, so if you can get the game on sale like I did you'll probably get some entertainment. I got 15 minutes.
This game really took me by surprise. I did not expect much from a simple risk game, but with the ammount of maps you can download for free, and good not buggy ALs this game is truly great if you like risk.

A very addictive, fun game. Easy to learn. Low impact on PC resources, too.
It ISN'T Risk, although it's based on the same mechanics (and it has a few Risk-like maps in the collection). It has a lot more to it, however, including the always creative mapping/modding community. And several in-game rules/play mode tweaks (like cards) you can make to spice it up.
The large selection of maps gives players a wide range of challenges and strategies. What works on one map may not on others, even against the same AI opponents. And then change the AI opponents and even on the same map, you have a whole new game.
Well worth the price as a solo game, with tons of replay value. Even at the easiest modes, the AI can be tough and require several attempts to defeat.
I would wish for an updated graphic interface (the visuals are at best adequate and somewhat dated) and a more sophisticated map creator/editor. However, these don't detract from the game play value.
I haven't played it online (yet), but I bought it as a solo game and it hasn't disappointed. That encourages me to try online as well.
Very fun game similar to R.I.S.K. with some interesting differences. There are a ton of different options to changes, plugins, and maps to choose from. One downside for me is that the game looks a little blurry and has bars on the side for my widescreen 1440p monitor, (all except a few maps do the border thing for me). But for me it is worth getting because the sandbox elements are very fun and there is plenty of content that makes it well worth 10 dollars.
If you enjoy Risk, this game is a great choice.
Positives: a large number of AIs with different play styles; a huge number of really diverse maps, with new maps regularly added to the archive; smooth game play (though there are some minor glitches, at least on the Mac side).
Negatives: the maps vary quite a bit in their graphical quality; multi-player is advertised and available, but there are few available multiplayer matches, most of which consist solely of AI players (SillySoft really needs to do something to promote multiplay).
I played this game years ago, and with the Steam release, I'm finding my re-addicted.
If you like Risk games, this probably will be a great addition to your game library, however take notes to this:
The good:
-Availability to play online with different people. (but flawed)
-Offline mode (competitive AI, easy, normal and hard modes)
-Fast game per turns (forces player to play for 30 secs per turn at online games), alt and ctrl commands for faster transfer and movement of soldiers.
-Great availability of custom maps to play. You can create your own maps, but not as easy it seems, requires you to know some phoshop skills and use their old fashioned confusing map making program (included here).
-Sound and music goes well according to the game theme.
The bad:
-Interface it’s a bit confuse and retro, looks like a program not a game (works with different windows, not an integrated fully interface), need some fixing with steam messages, simple game options and better art for icons and buttons.
-Lacks of depth in actions, it has some explosions and effects but still feels “empty and bare”, wich makes it to look boring.
Online:
-Difficult to host a game, you need manually to do port forwarding (or disable firewall), there are very few people hosting, so less games to play online. (I couln't host a game)
-When going online, you usually join at a played sessions, not at a new one, and have to wait for the current game to finish.
-The game just starts (no option for wait for players to join and then play game)
This game has potential if it gets correctly supported with more inmersive effects (maybe in 3D), easy online playing (hosting and joining) and a better INTERFACE!!
