Nobody will read my review so I Will Eat 1 Tablespoon of Sugar For Every Like this gets.
Warning: Dead PVP Game
This game has no single player content, and no playable PvP servers. There is no functioning PvP population, it's a dead game, and cannot be played online.
Super Treasure Arena is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down shooter/brawlers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This console (Switch) ported 2D retro pixel brawler leaves us a question... who abandoned it first, the players, or the developers? The devs pulled the plug on their online servers, and the only "single player" option is botmatching, which nobody would ever want to do with such a shallow game. And yeah, we could pretend in unicorns, fairies and local multiplayer, but we know none of that is real (the SteamDB player counts don't lie).
As a game this is pretty bad, ugly pixel art, top down console peasant view, you just do lightweight ARPG bashing of the enemy bots and a couple of NPC mobs, carry some gold around... boring, shallow, repetitive, rejected... I can certainly see why nobody was interested in the game.
The focus of the game is pure PvP, there's no single player content. The developer gambled that other players would be an acceptable substitute for adding storytelling, level design etc to the game. The vast majority of PvP-only games fail because they don't "go viral", and without players, or single player content to add a lasting value to the game, the game dies. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for adding content to a game.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Super Treasure Arena didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for winning a game, trivial to get, but less than 11 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game.
The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 11 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game.
That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with little merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products.
This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the almost scam-like price of $8 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them. For comparison, the $8 asking price for this game could get you games like the "Tomb Raider" remake, "This War of Mine" or "Batman: Arkham Origins". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
It's an awesome couch game to play with friends or family. But keep in mind that the servers has been taken down until further notice so online multiplayer is no longer supported.
is quite simple enjoyable pixel roguelike/arcade game with nice characters solor or with your friends
Not playable without RTX
Pretty cool with friends tbh
bought as a joke but its actually kinda fun
Its not that bad of a game, maybe not worth 8 dollars but try getting it when its on sale. There is no multiplayer and you're gonna go against AI bots all the time (unless your friends play with you) but over all its a good game to kill time with.
For whatever reason this game did not want to work with a controller. Pressing the attack button makes my character jump and the ability button does nothing. Clearly this is not acceptable, but unfortunately I took too long to try this game. I don't know whether mouse and keyboard will work, but that's not how I intended to play this, so I jut can't recommend this game.
PvP with 4 players.
Online is down.
Local playable.
After 10 minutes you pretty much done with the game.
Bought this for my friends to play on christmas to get some gaming on. Noticed servers are down. When checking other users have been complaining of same issue for a couple of months. Notcied the devloper had said hes disappointed with sale results. Maybe if the servers were up you'd be able have more sales.
Can't connect to online servers. Fix your game before you sell it.
I love this game so much! its one of the best games out there! But i would like to see some cool things like a teams mode or a co-op dungon crawler type mode, new charecters and charecter skins! also i would be cool if you could unlock charecters from leveling up instead of haveing them all at the start. Overall ITS SOO GOOD NICE JOB!!!! 10/10!!!!
Good game, but in the Main Menu the controller doesn't work properly. It often happens that I can't go up or down
While the online multiplayer does not work anymore, the local multiplayer is quite fun. Both modes remind me of the battle modes from the Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. It's a fun party game to play on the big screen, but really only worth it if it is on sale
Looks fine, plays alright, but has some issues with random drops in online lobby creation.
Very good arena shooter game (looks like to old Smash TV) with multiplayer, but nobody online now :(
So, I played with CPU characters only, but this game is very fun!
Good game. Love new classes. Only thing i dont like are the new crabs.
I WANT to love this game because of the original but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back the old server menus! The current drop-you-in-a-random-server is horrible!
Meh. Hated it, didn't like the action. Movement is wierd, collision boxes feel a bit off, something is wrong feeling about the game and it put me off a lot. Multiplayer? haha no. Not a single person online! Play against robots? OK, that lasts about 4 minutes... no depth to the game really
A very fun game with great multiplayer. I had a blast playing it as an HTML5 game before they put it on Steam, both with friends and with random people online. Everything feels cohesive and polished overall, and the gameplay is tight and fast-paced. Haven't been able to try Online yet, but Local Mode is really solid.
This is a good game for messing around with friends over.
