"...it looks like a fairly deep, personality-rich god game revival. Given that good god games are in woefully short supply these days, we should probably count our blessings here."
"The Mims: Beginning has become the latest indie hopeful to head down the crowd-funding route, popping up on Indiegogo. And it’s a bit of a looker, putting many so-called “AAA” games to shame with a visual style which brings to mind titles as diverse as Spore and Black & White."
"Everything in a game has been crafted in a gorgeous way. From creature to building, you will find the Mims to be one of the best indie games of the year 2014. "

Cute art, mechanics are good, but no save option for like if i'm in the middle of a game an have to go to work/school/an appointment/whatever other things you need to do to participate in ... ummm ... life? Would be nice to be able to remap key binds too. Mods would have helped a lot. It's just frustrating to play.
Devs don't seem to have done a lot of research into or have consideration for their playerbase. Like the first achievement - "Hello- An achievement for basically doing nothing." Nothing, really? I just spent some money on your product despite the crappy reviews and you're saying thanks for nothing? Great.
Next, the game -does- have saves, but the devs couldn't figure out how to serialize data mid-mission and read/write a save file. "It was technically impossible due to our decision not to do it." Again, playing your game is actually not the most important thing in my life, and I don't want to spend an hour doing most of a mission only to be called away by real life and then have to start over. I get that you're apparently licensing a black-box physics engine which doesn't give you insight into its immediate state - that shouldn't matter. If you have access to the variables in memory, which you have to do for the game to run, you can serialize those variables.
So, thanks for the game. Have an achievement for doing basically nothing.
That said, there's a lot to like about the game. It's a whimsical colony management that introduces new elements at a reasonable rate per mission, and it compares favorably to Starcraft with regards to the campaign - high praise. I'm hurting for turrets and passive defenses, and I'm not a fan of the "Click to heal your workers' energy" mechanic which is more of a phone app kind of thing, but I've got nothing truly bad to say about the gameplay loop through the first three missions. Some minor quality-of-life issues - the large AOE on psi abilities makes swatting attackers difficult once they're in your colony, as you also wind up swatting workers off the world and squashing chickens. Again, hurting for automated tower defenses here. But that could be a deliberate playstyle mechanic; this doesn't seem to be intended really as a tower defense game.
Is this is a decent real time strategy game, yes. Did I enjoy my time with it, mostly. Can I recommend it, absolutely not. There are 2 big reasons why.
1) The game has no respect for your time. Saves? Nope, doesn't have them. You have to play each level through to completion in order to move onto the next one. If it had even a save and exit feature it would change my opinion dramatically. The game also has so many frustrating bugs, where mims get stuck in buildings, or creatures that get knocked off the map just exist somewhere where you can't reach them but don't die. In the survival modes, it means the entire run is ruined. There are 4 achievements dedicated to playing a survival level on each of the 4 difficulties. If you complete it on the very hard, you still have to play it on the other difficulties to get their relevant achievement, instead of the common and very wanted tactic of having the hardest difficulty apply to the other complete on this difficulty achievements as well.
2) The language. It's bad. Really bad. In some places it is literally nonsense that makes no sense, in English. One English person going over the text would make such a huge difference. On top of this, you only get each piece of information once throughout the entire game. Forget the details about something? Sucks for you.
If the game had a save feature and an in game guidebook reminding about each building/creature/mim type, I would be able to recommend the game. That's literally all it would take for me to say yes this game is worth it.
The game is really original and has some fresh ideas. For a cheap price - give it a try. Even without in mission saves (only between missions) it is still worth checking if you like god simulators.
The lack of any sort of save game option other than a checkpoint system at the ends of mission is a complete game killer. Having to restart a mission 2 or 3 times after a 45 minute session is simply unacceptable. Game would be cute and fun but this one simple thing just ruins the entire experience.
Most of my time playing was got replaying very slow levels. Since if you didn't beat them in one shot you had to redo them because this game lacks a simple save game feature.
TLDR: I don;t regret buying this game at 90% off (£1.29 i think). Assuming you play this knowing what you are getting into, you don;t really have anything to complain about. But at full price, i don;t think i could reccommend it.
But as i know what i was buying, i'll give it a thumbs up based on how much i paid. Lets just hope the dev learned from the major miscalculation, and the next one does have a save function!
I picked this up at 90% off, just a quick Caveat. And my review is based on it being that price.
So i was browsing through the specials, and for some reason this caught my eye, It rang a bell for some reason, but was pretty poorly rated, But i clicked it any way, as i have a weird taste in games.
After reading up on it, and checking some of the reviews, i realised i had this game on my wish list for ages, right from the first time i saw it on steam, before it was even released i think. Anyway, i quickly realised that this was the game i was looking forward to, but removed due to the commonly known factor of the missing save ability.
I guess the Devs excuse of not having a save is kinda viable. You run the campaign, and must complete it. There are no saves, so if you mess it up, you gotta start deleting stuff, or restart from the begining. The issue is that each segment of the campaign is actually pretty long.. I spent 2 hours playing through the tutorial and the 1st level, and 2 hours getting through the 2nd level. But thats where the Dev got it wrong, the levels dont take the 20-40 minutes to complete, unless you have done it a few times before and worked out the perfect setup, its gonna take you hours.
Thats where the issue lies, The levels segments/stages should have been made shorter if there isn't going to be saves. I have only played the campaign so far, but i can see where people are comign from about the saves (or lack there of).
However, if you purchase this at a heavily discounted price, and accept that you are walking into something that may take some time to play through, and needs time set aside to actually play it. Its actually worth a play through. Its a pretty decent game, if you can get past the inability to save.
Its not worth the full price, and i'm no developer, but there must be an ad-hoc way to implement some form of save, even if its a full game state or something. Open it up to the community or something and see if anyone else can work out how to fix it.
This is a really tough game to review. On one hand, the art and animated characters are both just amazing. The cutscenes are well crafted. Even the little characters walking through the level are a joy to watch. The levels have a ton of tiny details that make them visually interesting.
But the gameplay is really rough. The A.I. for combat is not good, and the manual interface for moving combat units is difficult to use. Further, the game does not explain important parts of the mechanics, like how energy buildings work. It is hard to understand why things are not working when they don't. And then, there's the lack of mid-level saves... The levels can go for hours, but they are either finished in one sitting or started again from the beginning later.
So, with the splendid art, it takes a long time to see how the gameplay is such a mess. I suppose they had a vision for the game, and they stuck to it, regardless of the complaints in the support forums. The interface is quirky, just like the characters in the game. But it is consistent and it is not especially buggy. It's just not good.
But, at the end of the day, I like quirky games. I also like quirky people. And I know enough quirky people who like quirky games, too. I would recommend this game, despite the limitations. It has enough interesting things happening here that it would be worth purchasing.
A funny and cute god/strategy game with missions and a survival mode, clearly made with a lot of love. The tutorial was good, and as a left-handed player I didn't run into any problems (left-handed mouse works fine and the right-side keys I prefer do as well).
Two big cons:
- Can't save in the middle of a mission, and you don't know in advance how long a mission takes. (I'm too old for long playing sessions, and my kid who likes to play this with me, is too young.)
- The swaying main menu which gives me instant motion sickness. What were they thinking?!
Overall: 3/5.
This game is so cute, easy to learn and enjoyable, BUT
you can't save your game.
That is so annoying, when you play for a while, are close to viktory, but have to go.
So please, please, PLEASE add a save option.
This is a nice little game, but it desperately needs a in-mission/survival save function, autosave between missions is not adequate. - This issue stops me from recommending this game.
The mims has a fun world to explore every island has different challenges. Some points would be better improved. However, the game is certainly worthwhile and I recommend it.
The Good:
- The Art - There is just something that works for me. The aliens look silly; everyone has there own identity. The buildings are all in style. The buildings have rounded shapes, that resemble the Mims. It all looks a bit weird and clunky. It works.
- The gameplay - As a godgame it really works. Giving you several options to control your mims. Things are easy to understand. It's a godgame.
- The secrets - There are some secrets on every island to be found this is fun to do
- Duration - As I have not yet completed the story of the game. Already 25 hours in it is lenghtly enough for it's price.
- Challenges - While some are hard,
The bad:
- Controls - Some controls are a bit clunky. Using two buttons to rotate with the mouse. Targetting mims does not always click that well, for me.
- No save function - This is a big one. The save function could really help with games. Some maps take quite a while especially with my playstyle, taking it slow. I am not going to pause my game and wait for tomorrow.
The Ugly:
- Balancing - Somethings cost so much energy, Try installing a house for the mims, GOODBYE energy
[*]Menu - some menus or notifications have to much wording, or are unclear.
Same things everyone else is saying: doesn't make sense for this genre that there's no save feature; and there's too much micromanagement. In fact there's so much micromanagement that it's hardly even an example of the God-game genre.
I could love this game so easily. First off I enjoy God Games in general; Populous used to be my first exposure and remained my favourite for a long time. Secondly, the art is funky, and the creatures all make appropriate noises. Seriously, that really adds to the amount of fun I have with a game. It's also a Goldilocks game for me -- not too simple, but also not overwhelmingly complicated, so it's just right for those times when my brain isn't necessarily at its best, but I am not ready to go to bed yet, and I want something more interesting than point-and-click, yet Civilization is way too demanding.
The game has a lot of options, which I also enjoy -- you can play in story mode, where you can choose from 5 different missions, starting quite easily and ending with a real challenge. Or you can play in survival mode, with 3 different difficulty options plus complete customization. It is possible to play the game 100% peacefully, no pests, no enemies, no disasters at all, which is also something I prize when I want to relax. And you can make it unbearably hard on yourself, so there's definitely a lot of replay value here.
So why am I not recommending it? I want to! The developers generally did a pretty good job, and I like to reward that, especially with so many games on Steam that are abandonware.
For one, it's aggravating that the AI is not smart enough. Mims don't seek rejuvenation in their house when they most need it, especially guardians who have nothing to do but guard the place. And yet, they don't recoup their energy easily enough, which means I have to micromanage constantly. Mims who get hurt badly don't march straight for home either, and can easily die on you ("too stupid to live" comes true). I ended up choosing a custom game with only the meekest pest at a low rate of invasion simply so I could figure out where the AI fell flat on its face, and alas there are many places. And while I can micromanage rejuvenation and attacks on pests/enemies, I cannot make my Mims cut down vegetation; I have to burn it, and the burn rate is not high enough at the start to deal with the regrowth rate.
That alone wouldn't cause me to recommend against a game; I'd put up with that, because it is of course its own challenge to figure out a way to win within a game's constraints. I find methodical analysis and trial building fun in its own way.
But here's the deal breaker:
You cannot save in this game. And it doesn't even warn you that it doesn't auto save; when you leave, that is it, your game is gone and you have to start over. You can't set up two different scenarios, compare them, and tweak each. If you want to spend some time carefully fine tuning your game's economy, you have to basically remain logged into it for days. Which totally distorts your hours spent, aside from taking up memory from other games you might want to play or from actual work. And if your computer crashes, it's all for naught anyway. If you build a masterpiece of Mims civilization, better screen print it and then kiss it goodbye, because there is no return to old glories.
So I am sorry, but I cannot recommend it. If this doesn't bother you, by all means, I think it's well worth buying even at full price, because you can get many hours of gameplay out of it if you just don't leave the game. But for me, this is a death knell for a game; I lose all interest if I can't save my work to get back to it later.
Fun game but the fact that you cannot save mid-mission is silly... Not recommended to anyone who does not have hours to play at a time.
I was pretty excited to see a god game pop up on steam. Ever since Populus on the Amiga I've loved the genre but The Mims misses the mark for me.
Each mission takes place on a floating island, each of which contains new dangers to overcome. The developers have clearly made an effort to give the game a semblence of plot although the transitions between missions feel a bit sudden with no real explanation of why the little aliens are choosing the next landmass or what happened to everything you left behind on the last one.
The gameplay for the most part is fairly simple. Plants generate fruit, fruit gives you biomass and feeds your livestock and selling your animals gives you gems. Both gems and biomass can be used to build and upgrade structures to further advance your camp with gems generally being your bottleneck.
Trying to over extend your production of fruit or livestock will result in pests coming to eat your resources or hostile life being attracted to your island which will attack your animals and Mims. You need to balance production to minimise threats. This system of discouraging over production is a really nice mechanic.
Sadly, the good news stops there. The AI and some game mechanics feel poorly optimised which leads to more frustration than fun.
Mims get tired as they work and will need to rest up in a house to get their energy back. On one level, despite having one house for every two Mims they just refused to rest regularly. My guardians, essential for defense of my village are particularly guilty of not resting up when they have the chance and are frequently all out of energy when I most need them.
Despite being told early on that my Mims love nature, destroying trees is often the only viable way to get enough building space. I could overlook the backstory hole here is the process of removing foliage wasn't so painful in it's own right; setting fire to some of the bigger trees just reduces their size, usually requiring three bursts of flame to get the job done. The trees will grow back a bit though so if anything interrupts your pyromania while your Psi power build up (like needing to heal some guardians) you'll find the tree back to full height before you can have another go.
Plants can be a source of annoyance in other ways too. Several of the fruit providing plants will throw their finished product across the island and despite my best efforts to ensure that they're aimed at a building or that they have plenty of space for the fruit to land, I frequently find my new fruit tree throwing their resources off the edge of the island.
A little trial and error with placement of my plants could maybe be forgiven if it was at least possible to sell my plants back or reposition after they've grown but this is sadly not possible.
The final straw for me though is the lack of a save feature. Missions aren't particularly quick to complete and I've had a couple of occasions now where I've had to stop playing mid mission for one reason or another and have to abandon my progress.
Overall it's a game with some neat ideas and potential to be fun but seriously marred by it's shortcomings.
How is that? A god game that doesn't let you save through missions but requires the amount of microcontrol that makes MOBAs facepalm.
You have to order LIVESTOCK one by one. No setting amount. No ordering queues. One. By. One.
This is an enjoyable game. It reminds me of Spore in some ways, but with more content and added features. The Mims are primitive tribesman that consider you their God and as such follow your every beck and call. The controls work well, although there is some room for improvement. The levels are fun, they do feel more like a puzzle than anything, and they can be rather challenging whether you've played the level or not. Finding new ways to complete levels and streamline your overall goal is exciting. From the pictures you can more or less judge the art style, graphics, etc. for your own.
If you're considering buying this game now, however, there are some negatives to consider:
There is no saving in the middle of the mission. For a long mission this is quite the problem, so, although it definitely adds challenge, if you don't have some time set aside to complete a level you can't really enjoy the game.
Steam Achievements don't seem to be working, I really wish I would have known this before diving into survival mode (a save feature reeeeally would have been helpful here)
Overall, I'd give this game a 7/10 - worth the buy. +1 for the idea and creativity of the game. -1 for the controls, and alpha issues. If these issues were fixed, this game could be a really special experience for plenty of gamers.
Another stalled out early access disappointment with a developer ignores or outright argues with feedback.
Gets a lot of the "standard" stuff wrong (horrible camera/controls, no ability to save the game...) without bringing anything new to the table other than some cute graphics.
Update: Just updating now that this is out of early access to say that nothing has changed. According to the developers: "Maybe in AAA games mid save game is standard this is why people are accustomed to this option."
The Mims is a god-game where you play the mysterious creator who has ultimate power over an alien species who have crash landed on a set of floating islands. It's currently in early access and only the story mode is available, nevertheless I have not yet encountered any bugs and the game is very polished (short of a few typos) for day one early access.
You must harvest resources, create buildings, keep your Mims happy so that they can work productively, create and grow animals that you can then sell for more resources, defend your base, fight off creatures, and search for the parts you need to rebuild your spaceship and go home.
It starts off fairly simplistic but does gather depth as you progress. Problem is it takes a while to get there playing the story mode. If you're finding it too easy - it does get more complicated once everything is unlocked. I hope that when sandbox is implemented you can build on a much larger scope and hopefully set conditions that provide more of a challenge. I'll return to edit this once that is added!
I'd also really like an option to save in the story mode, especially considering some maps have a fail condition, ie. if your special hero dies - you lose a solid hour of play.
The (currently not rebindable) camera controls are the biggest negative and take some getting used to. I hope the developers consider reworking with the standard right click hold to rotate and tilt rather than having to move to the edges of the screen as well as adding bindings. Otherwise I can see the current system really holding the game back and frustrating players from the start.
Despite some negatives that need to be smoothed out, the game is charming. Beautiful graphics, runs very well, cute, entertaining and fills a niche in a genre which is sadly devoid of recent titles. I don't think this is the deep strategy god game some people are still hoping to appear in the genre, but it still has an absolute ton of potential at this point. Time will tell.
