Can't enjoy what doesn't work. A classic game, but don't expect to play it without constant errors.
Once again, Steam has no business offering games for sale that do not work out of the box. I don't care how long ago the game was released, if it generally requires the bulk of the players to finesse a bunch of files around and MAYBE it will run, is BS and not a pro-consumer.
Like other reviewers here, I have found it impossible to run the game in any resolution except 800x600 and constant crashes. Patrician 3 developers have looong moved on to more recent projects. Much like GOG, the burden really is on Steam to distribute a product that works. If it doesn't, they should pull it from their marketplace.
There are currently no patches / updates planned to establish compatibility with windows 8 or later.
Consider yourself warned.
So many hours spent on this game, I still own the phisical disk. It is definitely the best Patrician ever built, with much more dynamics and extended world than its precedessors or sequels.
Definitely recommended for who like the management and wants to have an immersive experience... dare to say, it is a must have!
This is not for everyone. If you like slower paced trading games, this might be for you. It is very slow paced though with very little action. The action-packed bit is the ship battles which really lack polish. Mostly this is fancy looking spreadsheet moving numbers around. I think the reason I like it though is it fits the premise so well
Display setting a little complex to change. Doesnt play well on newer system
The best
Needs to use compatibility mode to work from Steam. Little buggy, but still a great game!
This is the type of game you can relax to and get lost in for a few hours. It's not difficult, but not to easy. It's good for when you just want to get away from reality and detach. It's interesting and challenging even on the lowest level. It's not the greatest game in the world, but for what it's worth, it's very well constructed and will give you hours of enjoyment if you let it.
tough and difficult and full of satisfaction if you have an historical imagination!
Sure, the graphics are ancient, but there’s something nostalgic about watching your pixelated ships sail from port to port, slowly building your trade empire. It’s not overly complicated—once you figure out how to set up automatic trade routes with captains selling and buying at set rates, you’ll have a fleet raking in cash. But the moment a pirate ship shows up? Forget fighting—just run and pray.
Managing building resources is another story. Every time I’ve tried, I’ve ended up bankrupt, especially if there’s any conflict on land. Most of your fortune is made through ports and trade, but the game has just enough depth to keep you hooked for hours, mastering those trade routes and dodging bankruptcy.
A beautiful simulation of the golden age of trade in the Baltic - this game encouraged me to learn so much about the history of the Hanseatic League and what Europe looked like in the 14th century.
This older version is really lovely, and was way underrated in its time. It has since been replaced by successor product Patrician 4. That product is very similar, with plenty of quality-of-life improvements; so I recommend purchasing that unless you are approaching this with a collector's mindset.
I don't expect we will see further versions of Patrician beyond that one, or if we do, they will be rolled into a more complete title (regions and historical periods beyond 14th-15th C. Europe) or a 4X game.
cool game
I played all the versions Patrician 1-3 and now with the Proton setup with slight tweaks it also works on Linux.
A great economy simulation game set in the late medieval period in northern Europe. Success requires applying the right strategy.
An awesome "waste" of time trading and building.
Been playing since 2001, since the days of Patrician II.
