Warning: This isn't your traditional bullethell/shmup. Imo this is predominantly an on rails precision parkour (the really unforgiving frustrating kind, some parts really felt the same level of BS that Unfair Mario can be.) Anyway, it requires tight controls as a result, but then, it doesn't feel tight, and sometimes you feel it moves too fast but then at the same time too sluggishly. I've never played shmup where I repeatedly failed to take down all ships, and certainly not on the first level that is how slow you are, already making it feel lackluster especially when you're used to actual good shmups. There is also a garbage mechanic of needing to hold down a button to charge to fire a missile on eventual release when done charging where the timer for it to be ready is in a spot on the screen you cannot afford to glance at most of the time. Just let us shoot a rocket in lieu of the bomb we often get in shmups. Why this added nonsense? It's not fun. At least, this game is not fun to me. I love shmups and I never get mad at dying in them, due to like failing to weave through complex bullet patterns and such, but this game pissed me off. Level 2 is some grade A bs if you ask me, and I can only imagine it gets worse and worse. I can't tell ya cuz I ain't suffering through that just to beat this lackluster game where there's so many good ones in my library. I'm good bro, thanks.
This is a very charming, beginner to mid-level shoot 'em up game with a strong "steam punk" theme to it, and offered a fair challenge to a bullet-hell novice such as myself. I am not good at bullet-hell shooting games at all, so for me it offered a good challenge and I managed to complete the game on normal difficulty in an hour. If you are advanced in this genre of game and are looking for a major challenge, this is probably not the game for you. Personally I loved it, especially the dialogue between the characters at the end of the stages that was both clever and funny.
"Steam and Metal" is a very badly made Russian 2D retro pixel vertical scrolling arcade bullet hell/shoot 'em up with a "steampunk" theme (although it's really irrelevant when it comes to lazy pixel "art", a pixel blob is a pixel blob is a pixel blob).
Gameplay itself is your usual Raiden ripoff only with worse graphics, handling, and shallower gameplay (not that anyone would really describe Raiden as deep). The control handling is noticeably laggy, a combination of poor game engine and just plain lazy/bad development practices and lack of testing and polish... all good reasons to avoid this, and let's get on with the rest of them.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game construction kit/toolset, Microsoft XNA Game Studio. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur/unskilled developers as it doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities.
I'm not just saying that, either, the engine was so garbage, Microsoft themselves abandoned it in 2011... that's right, this Russian trash was made with an engine over 10 years old, to pollute Steam in the hopes of gouging a few rubles from gamers. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. "Steam and Metal" has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing the first level, trivial to achieve, but less than 5 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 5 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time.
How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who weren't even playing the game? Trading cards. Players will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it.
We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
"Steam and Metal" has the ridiculous price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
A cute cross between 1941 and Steel Empire. I thought that this game would be an easy achievement hunt but the difficultly massively increased on the second level. I only ended unlocking 50%, and I'm sure some of them are bugged. The graphics are nice and cartoony and it seems like it would be a lot of fun to play to the end, but it's just too hard, and level 3 kept locking up again after I had unlocked by finishing level 2. Worth buying in a sale and if you are good at bullet hell shooters. If the devs made a patch to make the game easier I'd like to give it another go. Otherwise, a mild thumb up at the moment.
Meh, a lot of shoot-em-up competition is more fun, pick this up with 90% discount or something.
Gameplay is ok, but nothing special, powerups are pretty uninspiring, and you're left with nothing after dying, which is frustrating. Plot and window-dressing are well-drawn if a bit cliche (then again that's steampunk as a whole).
It was inexpensive on sale, so I'm fine with paying little for mediocrity, but each time I close the game, it completely screws up my desktop and I'm forced to close and restart Steam. It also took Edge out with it (not my main browser), so the issue may be related to some microsoft framework.

An enjoyable bullet hell game, not unduly hard on the normal setting, with aparodic, self-referrencial steampunk setting/plot. The dialogue is outrageously histrionic and hilarious--whomever wrote this has a great command of the English language and 19th C. style. there are eve nods to shoot-em-ups like Zero Wing and Star Castle and some referrences that I know I'm not getting. Graphics get the job done nicely; there's even a stylishly illustrated intro and ending sequence.
The biggest frustration is the controls, and I'm kind of miffed at the developer for not giving us the option to reassign keys. Space bar is always shoot, and on a lot of laptops, whether you use the arrow keys or WASD, at least one will be on the same circut as the space bar. In other words, you can simultaneously move up left, you can move up and shoot, and you can move left and shoot, but if you try to move up-left and shoot the keyboard won't acknowledge the last key you pressed. The simple solution would be to use the mouse, only this game's mouse movement feels imprecise, sluggish and then erratic. The best way to play it, then, is use WASD/arrow keys to move and the mouse button for your primary weapon. You'll loose the odd life by accidentally moving the mouse, is the only downside. I imagine playing it with a gamepad would be fine.
This isn't hardcore bullet hell, and if you've played some shmups you'll probably beat the game within one to two hours. Steam and Metal aims for the style and length of old arcade or console shmups, with the intent that you want to periodically replay them. I would say the gameplay is fun enough and the dialogue funny enough that you will. Certainly worht a dollar, and I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.
As shmups go this is way on the easy side. I got it on sale for a buck and I think you can get 2-3 hours of fun out of it. I can recommend it for beginners to the genre if you can find it on sale again ^^
Steam and Metal is a pretty good game for what it is, now its story time.
You play as Judith the daughter of a brilliant professor and inventor who sadly after making his plans/draft for his new differential steam engine or DSE for short is killed and his plans taken by a terrorist.
Soon Judith finds her father and with his last breath begged his daughter to make sure his invention was not used for war. So it’s up to the young girl to get her farther work back and to see it used for good.
Okay now what I liked. The opening scene it was nice, I loved the anime art it had. Combat was fun hard but fun. Story was good I liked how it did not take it self so seriously, like with the dialog.
The only bad thing it’s a bit short you can beat it in an hour or more if you’re going after the achievements and price is a bit high for a short game like but not too bad.
So with that out of the way, this is pretty good game and I love to see a sequel of this game someday. Now if you want a good Shoot 'Em Up/Bullet Hell this could be a game your looking for.

This game has a "my first game" aesthetic and feel from the presentation to the graphics to the sounds to the gameplay.
This is boring as sin and very weak.

This is not a good game. It functions and doesn't crash. Those are the good aspects.
One of the calmer bullet hells out there but for what it lacks in insanity it makes up for in story which is refreshing for the genre. Sadly not much stands out beyond that. The lengh is short, and different modes and options are limited. If you haven't played many bullet hell games this would be a good place to start, however for vets it's a little bland especially with no competitive play option. I recommend this game for its art and story but as always, get it on sale.
Bullet-Hell Shmup with beginner - advanced difficulty, a short storyline, good music and nice visuals.

EDIT:changed rating from no to yes. I wish there was a neutral option, the game isn't brilliant but it's sorta fun.
Character art is kinda bland, and the playfield lacks shading, but it's still very pretty and handles well. Overall pretty good shmup. If you do update, put in some baked in lighting to give the levels a little more contrast and bam, amazing visuals

Though Steam and Metal it doesn't impress much....on my 1st gameplay.
The game is not that crappy either, is acceptable for what it worth.
Steam & Metal gameplay is pretty barebone, we won't be getting any great or impressive power up.
The shootin not bad; but... just not that adrenaline rush if compare to other in same genre.
The power up just a from single stream of firing mode to triple stream firing mode,
Is has nothing much to offer and make us feel powerful or rewaded to battle the EVIL.
The graphic look pretty neat not messy.
The BGM is pretty cheesy and not bad overall.
The worst or what I dislike about this Steam & Metal,
we can't rebind our key and there is no resolution option, I haz sad.
Although the resolution can't be tuned yet the F.O.V is good with this game,
Unlike some other game that really make us a headache from the view.
About the control,
I has no idea about Keyboard and Mouse but with a 360 Controller, it feel pretty smooth.
I didn't realise there is DEMO for this game before I bought em.
But for the 85% discount and the little fun it haz offer me,
I think is worth to keep it in my library.
Try the DEMO or just bought em for the 75%-85% discount.
Generally a fun steampunk-themed vertical shmup, of a classic type rather than bullet hell. Features stage obstacles and a power-up system.
The graphics are generally pleasing, but not spectacular. Ditto for the music.
The game's biggest problem is the color palette of its shots. A number of enemy bullets — especially those shot by bosses — are grey cannonballs. This fits the aesthetic nicely, but it also has a tendency to blend into the background in a way that bullets in a shmup never should. In later boss fights this can become a major problem.
The lack of rebindable controls is also a major drawback, especially as the bomb-equivalent is bound the the decidedly nonstandard Ctrl key.
Reminds me of a more colourful and humourous Battle Garegga (if they bring that to steam I'll shít myself). Definitely one to try out if you have fond memories of Mame emulated shmups of yore, especially with the worldwide leaderboard to show you how much you suck/rule compared to everyone else.

Bought it for cards. Turns out it's really fun game. At least for a person who doesn't play SHMUPs that often. Gameplay is fluid and fun. Graphics are a bit meh, tho - at least the backgrounds :( Looks a bit like a Game Maker game from mid-2000's. Sometimes it's hard to tell what's in the background and what you will crash into.
... and the god damn cards aren't apparently even added to the game yet..? :d
