A retro roguelike dungeon simulator
KeeperRL combines classic dungeon simulator gameplay with roguelike and RPG elements. As an evil keeper you will dig out and construct a dungeon and recruit malicious minions to help do your bidding. You’ll train and equip them and take up the fight with the forces of good around you.
Engage in combat and take direct control of your minions and in true roguelike fashion fight tactical battles in a simultaneous turn-based manner. When you make a move, your enemies also move.
Dungeon management
Dig deep into the mountain and establish a great dungeon to fit the needs of you and your minions. Ensure there’s sleeping quarters, training rooms and crafting stations and decorations. Make sure your dungeon is defensible against invaders using traps, guard areas and choke points.
Multiple playable factions
Master up to 10 unique factions and their respective keepers. Play as a Dark Wizard mastering the art of black magic, a Necromancer forging an army of undead or play as a Goblin King, leading a horde of greenskins on a quest to find the lost goblin matrons. Your choice of faction will impact gameplay and the style of your dungeon.
Roguelike
The world is procedurally generated and simulated on a very detailed level. Creatures use equipment and consumable items. There are dozens of special items, spells, attributes and special attacks. Cut off the heads and limbs and blind or poison your enemies in combat and if you’re not careful your enemies can do the same to you. If your Keeper dies it’s game over and you’ll have to start over again so consider your tactics carefully.
Quickly get your dungeon going and go on your first raid, but the game continues to reveal more depth the longer you play and manage to stay alive.
Explore and expand
Explore the world around you through a large world map with dangerous locations to raid and pillage for loot and infamy as other factions might attempt to raid your dungeon if you fail to defeat them.
You’ll also explore the mountain you’ve built your dungeon in as you can come across precious resources, treasures or dangerous perils above and below you.
Multiple Floors
Expand your dungeon and dig tunnels and rooms in both vertical directions as KeeperRL supports many Z-levels.
Online map sharing and mods
Download dungeons made by other players from Steam Workshop, and places them on your world map as enemies. See how others design their fortresses, fight with their minions, and steal their loot! After winning the game, you'll have the option to share your dungeon online as well.
Or browse and download any number of the great mods available for the game through Steam Workshop.

Good idea for a game, not very well executed. Combat is a joke, lost more minions to them moving stupidly then anything.
yes
Awesome game and love the concept. It plays really well, and it's really engaging. Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys building and civilization sims.
Great little medieval colony simulator for the price!
It's... ok...
Feels really shallow and the UI is pretty bad. I get that it's trying to mimic DF and Dungeon Keeper, but misses a lot of what makes those games great.
Still had some fun with it, but got repetitive quickly.
This is game is so much fun and plays great on steam deck. It’s pretty easy to get into, and you’ll have a handle on things once you’ve sunk a couple hours in. Highly recommend. Really happy there’s no meta progression too!!
One the best games I have played in a long time. At first it took me a while to figure out the best way to handle the combat but, one that was figured out I really fell in love with the game. It has all the elements I love-- Building, combat, colony simulator, and roleplay elements. This game allows you to build the story as events unfold! As an added bonus you can tell that the developer of this game truly loves their work by giving us constant updates and monitoring bugs and crashes.
Awesome game, but does still feel incomplete and some of the gameplay can feel unintuitive and unfair - still definitely recommend overall, especially if you're looking to get into dwarf fortress but can't be arsed with the admin of learning it
VERY tough but rewarding. I had thought my keeper was like a god onto to men. I wiped out hordes of undead and bandits, even barely beat a dragon. Yet a small snake(S) poisioned me and verily I died shitting my pants and bleeding from mine own eyes!
gud
wonderful game! want to be sauron? play this gem of a game. no fance graphics but still pretty imho. dont read, buy and play :-)
Obviously takes a lot of influence from DF, but lacks its depth. Borrows concepts that make no sense in its own world - my evil wizard kept writing obscene poems just because dwarfs in some other game did as well, my goblins liked to drink like dwarfs because that's how much the devs lack imagination.
The game progress is wonky. At first the player explores the caverns, builds a bunch of stuff, which is always fun, digging for resources, building rooms for minions just like in the Bullfrog's classic game. Then the speed bump hits, to progress and unlock more content, some obscure "research" is needed but at no point the game gives any hint where to get this "research", even if you build every room and item and workshop etc. you won't get more. I suppose at this point the player should have to form a party and go raiding the neighbors and steal their stuff. But that is the very problem of this game, it railroads you hard, it tells you how it wants to be played, there's hardly any player decisions to be made, the player just follows the script laid out by the devs. The beauty of this kind of games should be that every game can be different, the game should be an empty canvas for the player to paint on. Not so here, very little room to maneuver, very little content.
There are some positives, the graphics are quite good (for this genre), the user interface works decently (although I wonder why they have to refer to z-levels as such, yet another concept copied from DF without thinking, why not just call it "height" because it makes much more sense. Who is to say that upwards is -1 Z and not +1 Y anyway). Why does the player has to care how you have laid your data structures in the computer's memory?
I see the game has been in the progress for almost a decade. I would not hold my breath it will ever get finished to the point it will entertain you more than the 5 hours after you have seen 90% of it.
I tried playing this game but the frame rate is really weird was running way too slow the fact that it took about three minutes to even make the world was also a weird thing. I tried the option in the menu that said it would load the game faster at the start and even tried using the old school graphics but neither one would allow me to increase the frame rate and make the game run faster. What little of the game meaning just the tutorial that I played was actually kind of fun but for now I think I will try other games maybe sometime in the future there will be some of update that will make the game run better or maybe I will finally have a much better computer till then I will leave this review here for now.
It's a nice little game, HOWEVER, don't be fooled by the state of release.
This game is missing a crazy amount of features and is still pretty much in an early early access state.
Multiple factions that play 90% the same, use the same items, build identical dungeons.
You can get hours of gameplay out of it, however over time the amount of missing features and overall lack of polish stacks up.
Put the early access tag back on.
Not very complex I feel like I've seen all this game has to offer in under 2 hours.
10/10
As the name implies its Dungeon Keeper meets Rogue-like. Straight forward fun with reasonable UX, that has had a lot of care put into it.
Quick Summary: This game is an unbelievable amount of fun! I feel like the game could have been named: Hero's of Might and Magic Tycoon. If I had this game 30 years ago, it would have been the only game I played. Not the best for in-depth tutorials, but there is a lot of community support. Game can be punishing at times, but once you get a few games in you'll understand what to do. The difficulty can be adjusted, and the learning curve is not bad at all. I strongly endorse this game!!!
Nice game to create your evil dungeon,
I enjoyed the game play, and truly did sink a lot of time into the game, but I also am a devout Catholic, and I don't feel comfortable with the sacrilegious tone the new update took. If you don't mind that, and enjoy games that tend towards being a bit harder, you'll probably like this game. I'll probably be retiring it, though.
sstinky
Just not a very fun game, poor turn based combat, poor turn based combat, For a game that came out this year I expected more, this is just a clunky mess.
this game taught me that minors make very poor miners
War crimes in fantasy setting.
Fantastic.
A game about being an evil dungeon keeper, destroying or enslaving your enemies.
And it has a surprisingly relaxing soundtrack.
Any fan of the Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld, or Dungeon Keeper owes it to themselves to play this game. Bonus points for being one of the most moddable games on the market! Dig out your dungeon, repel invaders, find treasure, and take good care of your champion creatures to take control. Lots of replayability, and a very unique mechanic that allows you to set your own dungeon as an adversary for future playthroughs (or download other players' dungeons). Perfect for laptops and steam decks.
Ah, KeeperRL, the game where your dreams of being an evil overlord come true-sort of. Imagine if Dungeons and Dragons had a wild fling with SimCity, and nine months later you got KeeperRL.
First off, you'll dive into a pixelated world that looks like someone took a box of Crayola crayons to an ancient map. You're the bad guy here, a dungeon keeper with a desire for domination and an interior decorating style that screams "I'm evil, but I like things organized."
You start building your dungeon, and it's all fun and games until you realize your minions are about as smart as a sack of hammers. They'll wander into traps they set themselves, and forget the concept of teamwork when the heroes come knocking.
Speaking of heroes, they're more like persistent pests who didn't get the memo that the villain should always win. And nothing says 'comic relief' quite like watching your supposedly fearsome creatures get their butts handed to them by a lone hero with a stick.
But here's the kicker: when you least expect it, you might just end up getting emotionally attached to your little goblin chef who's struggling to make a meal out of thin air.
KeeperRL is a delightful mess-a chaotic mix of strategy, management, and role-playing, all wrapped up in a retro-graphics package that makes you nostalgic for the days when your biggest worry was whether you had enough quarters for the arcade.
So, if you've ever wanted to unleash your inner villain and laugh at the absurdity of it all, KeeperRL is your ticket to a villainous good time!
Great funny game !
Great little game, needs more depth but is fun for a bit
A somewhat simple yet very re-playable game. It can get a bit repetitive once you figure out the best solutions are most often the same solutions for every race, but there is some nice variety and strategy with races such as the Dwarves and Gnomes to spice things up from endless "forced conscription". If you ever get bored there's a lot of mods that add lots of content into the world that ramps up the difficulty as well.
My only big complaint is that the Adventure mode was a lot better in Early Access compared to now. I feel like it isn't worth playing Adventure mode anymore.
Neat little colony builder/roguelike fusion where you play the bad guy, or well there are a couple of "good" playable factions as well as a roguelike adventure mode.
Don't expect dwarf fortress levels of depth, you can kind of finish a campaign in a single (long) sitting once you get a grasp on things, there are z levels and treasures to be found in the depth as well as raiding other map tiles, but population limit is kind of restrictive and the tech tree is not that expansive, but still plenty of content and different factions play quite differently.
Fun dungeon building game
It's ok.
This game is simple but complex and entertaining and frustrating all at the same time. It's a great game to take it slow and bring it with you on the Steam Deck or just on a side monitor while you're at "work". I found myself coming back to this game several times during the course of the development and enjoying each and every new addition, improvement, and edit. Still looking forward to whats ahead for this game and the devs.
Cosa viene prima ? L'uovo o la gallina ? War of Overworld o KeeperRL ?
It's good
This is a really good game definitely worth a try
Love it, the dev keeps working on this and it is so much fun.
I like it >:)
Hard and fun
Best top-down, old-school Dungeon Keeper-like fun I've had in a while. Gives me good nostalgia gamer vibes as I delve out a fortress and populate it, while I massacre the surrounding countryside, one map at a time. You play as the bad guy in most scenarios, however, so you will be killing innocent villagers and enslaving much of the surrounding populace, so be warned. (I say this because there are one or two idiots complaining in the forums about "having to torture children," and it just boggles the mind. Why did you buy the game, then, knowing the subject matter? It's like moving to Florida and complaining about the occasional hurricane. If you're going to complain about lack of agency when playing a video game, then I can't help you; you should seek professional therapy.)
There are quite a few different scenario options to choose from in terms of gameplay, plus a few more you can unlock through playing the game in certain ways and/or completing challenges (or by turning on immediately in the settings). However, I always end up playing the same way: super-power up a single character by giving him my best gear and solo battling enemies at choke points like my guy is Leonidas screaming "THIS IS SPARTA!" while I save-scum my way through all the battles. Minions -- who needs them? Me, probably, given the number of reloads in the current solo campaign.
And in fact, minions can really help, provided they're not so weak or under-geared that they're just getting mowed down in one stroke. For example, a quartet of archers backing your play while you tank in the front is an easy way to play, but I got bored with that after a few dominant runs; same with the amusement of amassing a huge army and watching it sweep a field while mounted on dragons, minotaurs, war horses, and a variety of other rideable critters; or by dominating a field through magic and summons. There's a lot of variety to how you can play the game.
Digging into the deeper layers looking for resources and events is also a lot of fun, though I wish there were a bit more randomness to the events at this point. There are a couple dozen different scenarios you can discover as you delve out the z-layers, some of which seem scripted and others placed more randomly, but you'll probably see everything within a few successful games if you mine diligently.
The game is also fairly easy to mod. I don't recall the exact format of the data files, but they're easily accessed with something like Notepad, and the structure is easy enough to interpret, allowing you to develop your own assets. I've enjoyed tweaking certain gameplay elements, like adding certain structures to a scenario's build-set for QoL or expanded gameplay. There are also many options available for download through the Steam Workshop.
All in all, given the relative cheap price and the possible time investment factor, I definitely recommend this game for those who are interested in rogue-likes, settlement builders, colony management, and old school RPGs. Bonus points if you like to torture small children and pets as an evil overlord.
Game is pretty fun, you build a dungeon and send out your hordes to destroy villages and stuff to level up your evil level so you can research better gear and stuff. Only complaint is that NECROMANCER SUCKS, IT SUCKS, YOUR UNDEAD WILL JUST LOSE THEIR LIMBS AND TAKE UP SPACE IN YOUR DUNGEON WHILE ALSO BEING BLIND AND FORCED TO CRAWL ON THE GROUND, PLEASE JUST ME BE ABLE TO USE BONES OR SOMETHING TO REPAIR MY MINIONS.
More accessible Dwarf Fortress with dungeon management. This is a fun little game. Sorting out mod versions is a little confusing but that's obviously not a strike against the game, just mentioning it as a warning to anyone else who likes using the workshop.
Solid game. It kinda plays like Rim World and Heroes Hour fusion. Very reminiscent of the old "Dungeon Master" game on byond.
very good .. VERY hard ... after 25 runs at 49 hrs i finally managed to get my first dungeon run complete
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3361007308
so you can add my dungeon as a lootable place to your game if you get this game
The game is neat, the sound is nice, a lot to learn, a lot to discover. If you want to get addicted badly, try Factorio instead but this game appealing enough to keep you sinking into it for a while and just comeback anytime that you need more. I don't really like the damage system but overall the game is really good. The discord community of this game is unreal in a good way.
Can already tell this game is very addicting and i love it, one hour flew when i played it
This is a challenging game. While KeeperRL is it's own thing, imagine that Dungeon Keeper, Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld met cute and subsequently had a child (definitely not a "love" child, more of a "bad seed").
While this game is hard as heck, it's a lot of fun. There are a variety of modes to experience, which all change the play style quite a bit. The game is worthwhile as is.
***
Hopes for the future of this game? More options to play the game differently, such as persistent worlds and/or "heirs" (or comparable function). A more intuitive interface. It took some time for me to learn how to use stairs while traveling. The ability to relocate your "home" and/or have multiple "bases" (which would include the ability to harvest on other maps). A "narrative framework" allowing for campaigns, stories and/or set goals (e.g., win conditions).
Shallow.
The gameplay has about two levels to it, and then you're through the discovery phase and everything is just repetition with different-colored sprites. Needs about two more years in the "feature add" phase before release - but wait, it's already released! Guess that's not happening, then.
