Recommendation: A fun word game that combines elements of Boggle, Scrabble, and CRPGs.

Critique: Letter Quest plays like Boggle: you are presented a bunch of random letters, and you have to use them to form English words. Unlike Boggle (or most word games based on it, like Bookworm), you do not have to form words using adjacent letters. You can type the letters on your keyboard or click them with the mouse pointer; using the keyboard makes the game play much faster. There is no time limit, however: you can take your time to find better words. The frame for this word play is that you are a junior Grim Reaper who is fighting their way through a winding dungeon on monsters, and you form words to deal damage to your foes.

The element that is taken from Scrabble is the letter value: letters can be worth 1 (common), 2 (uncommon), or 3 (rare) points, which count toward the damage that you deal to a monster when you submit a word.

The CRPG elements are that your character and your foes have hit points (HP), each battle you win earns you experience points (XP) and crystals, and you use the crystals and XP to improve your character's abilities.

Battles: In a battle, when you submit a word, it does damage to your opponent, which is subtracted from its HP. If it still has a positive number of HP, it takes an action (which is usually an attack that does your character damage). If you ever take enough damage for your HP to be reduced to zero, you lose that level. Once you've completed a level, it is marked on the map, and you can select that level again in the future so you don't have to start from the very beginning every time you play. Some of the levels include fights with "boss monsters:" especially tough foes that have special defenses and/or special attacks. Special defenses usually involve reducing the amount of damage from all words in a particular category. For instance, they could take no damage from 3-letter words, or take reduced damage from any words that don't contain a double letter ('EE' or 'SS' or 'TT,' for example). Special attacks are things that alter your selection of letters, including: turning a bunch of the letters into the same letter (such as "Z"), poison tiles (some of the letters turn green and will do damage to you as well as your foe), plague tiles (some of the letters turn red, do no damage, and will "infect" adjacent tiles if they're not used), petrified tiles (some of the letters turn to stone and can't be played), spin tiles (some of the letters are inverted, making them slightly harder to read), and tornado tiles (some of the letters are marked with a twister and will randomly change each turn if they aren't played).

Awards: When you complete a level - usually a chain of several monsters - your character is awarded crystals and XP. The crystals are currency that you use to buy weapons, potions, and books. There are no purchases you can make that cost real money; everything uses the crystals that you earn by completing levels in the game.

Weapons: You can equip one weapon at a time, and each weapon has an effect on gameplay: some do more damage, some provide healing, some increase the XP earned, some increase the crystals you earn. Some of the weapons are unlocked by paying a fee of crystals, others are unlocked by achieving in-game goals.

Potions: Potions are items that you can use once that give a temporary benefit: healing your character, reducing the damage of enemy attacks, increasing the damage of your attacks, etc. You have a limit on how many potions you can carry, which can be increased by spending crystals.

Books: Books are key items that you purchase using crystals; each one provides a permanent boost to your character, and the XP that you earn by completing levels is automatically applied to improving/"leveling up" the book(s) you have equipped. There are more books than you can equip at one time, so part of the fun is choosing which book(s) to equip to help you with your particular play-style. Are you going to focus on playing longer words? There's a book for that. Are you going to focus on forming words with high-value letters? There's a book for that, too.

Letter Quest is a great game, and a must-have for any fan of word games.

It's a nice flash game made from png images. Btw you can modify those png to look different but I recommend to backup the files before doing that (by example you can grayscale the game to look like an old game xD).

I completed the story mode in the remastered version, so I decided to continue with this. This came with that one, and I wanted to see if there's a difference. This looks much the same, except less settings and no endless mode. It's still fun, and has cards and achievements.

It's basically scrabble with some light RPG elements added on top like potions, quests and upgrade modifiers.
Each level has 3 challenge stages. The first challenge is Time Trial, the 2nd can have any number of modifiers added to the level like 3 banned letters, 4 letter words do no damage, etc. and the 3rd challenge is 'Enemies are Elite'(more health, do more damage to you).

If you like scrabble you'll like this game.

I did notice that a fair number of words, especially long ones, aren't recognized, and some names are recognized while others aren't: Diana isn't recognized while Jenny is.

After you've used a word it shows the definition of it on the side.

I'd say it's quite a niche genre, but if it is a niche you enjoy then I think you'll find this game satisfactory.

This game makes you think a lot about stuff.

Is a waiter called waiter because he waits?
If you put water and dirt to something, do you ad-mire?
„Trogon“ is a word and „Orion“ isn‘t?
Why can I find scissors in the game, but not in my room?
Yay, why?
And where‘s the bacon?

PS: I jibbed at first, but I spent a spint of talers for the ginks‘ cairn under the groins of yore.
Sorry, just testing out my new vocabulary.
And thanks to this game, I can finally spell „bivouac“ correctly.

I really liked the game, bought it years ago and came back to the game again, trying to finish all achievements, luckily did, hardest part was the "1hp-challenge"
I like that you have to adapt a lot of abilities to finish different levels, keeps the game interesting, some are even with the "advanced time upgrade" hard to do.

This game is exactly what it sounds like.

You are given 15 random letters and must make words in order to attack the monsters in the dungeons.
There are upgrades and new challenges, including a hard mode that unlocks when you finish the game.
(Playing the hard mode is not required for achievements.)

A nice feature of this game is that once you spell a word, the definition of that word is shown on the lefthand side of the screen.

The game accepts enough words that you are unlikely to struggle the way you might with cheap games which have a limited dictionary/wordlist.
There are very few actual words which aren't accepted by the game, and there are also some slang words & names which ARE accepted. The game doesn't appear to update it's dictionary, so not all slang is accepted.
But the game DOES accept Americanized spellings as well as proper English spellings, which is a nice change.

It's interesting to figure out the best words to deal most damage. I found it quite difficult as a non-native speaker. But you get to buy upgrades and there are multiple levels available which helps.

It's a pretty great word game; multiple sub-level challenges, interesting caveats for different enemies, and useful upgrades. There is a bit of a "story line" but I put that in parenthesis because it is barely there. Overall, it is a nice way to kill some time.

I know there are a ton of fans of Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey out there, and I appreciate that. I get the casual charm this title brings, and why people enjoy it. With that being said this title is too standard, the feel too mobile, and the core mechanic too old for me.

Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey is a build-a-word adventure game built around mobile grind mechanics. It all works well enough, and if you get into it - you are gonna have a good time. The part that I get hung up on is that the core mechanic of building words is ages old, and frankly has been done to death. Even with some interesting variations thrown in, it just does not compel me. I do appreciate the mobile/lite RPG grind for loot and awards to add replayability, but to be fair the whole thing feels paper thin.

Again, the problem here is that this title just isn't something that is for me - but I tried it and will weigh in for my Steam friends. If you are looking for a more progressive typing-based game, I'd check out Epistory - Typing Chronicles or maybe Typing of the Dead: Overkill. I'm not necessarily recommending them, but they have a bit more 'game', and bring a bit more freshness to the genre.

Pros:
+If you get into this, you'll have a fun time
+The price-point is fair, and it is often on sale

Cons:
-There are many word-building typing-based games, and I fail to see what this one does that makes it stand out
-Feels too mobile to me (both the interface and the grindy awards system)
-I don't find it all that fun, frankly

You know what this is. If you are on the fence, I'd suggest waiting for the frequent sale.

This is a game in the style of Bookworm Adventures or Word Realms—you have a handful of letter tiles, and you have to spell words to attack various enemies. Longer words and rarer letters make for more damage, and you go back and forth until either you or the enemy falls over. Simple enough. I'm a big fan of that genre (what few games exist for it, anyway), but unfortunately, this game doesn't really do the genre justice.

This game is a lot easier than Bookworm Adventures or Word Realms, though. For one, you have a massive hand of tiles (20 at once!), so it's not at all hard to spell words. Second, enemies rarely do anything especially bad to you—they do sometimes mess with your tiles, but none of the things they do to you are particularly problematic. You can purchase all kinds of numerical upgrades (increased health, increased damage, etc.); some of the challenge missions basically aren't possible until you do this, but that's more due to strange enemy design than due to actual challenge. Also, letters don't have specific point values, but instead are just ranked into three tiers. This makes it easy to spell words that score decently high, but it also means that there isn't much reward for using really obscure letters.

Once you beat a level, you'll have to go back over it three more times, with different rules each time. There's a time trial, which is exactly what it sounds like. There's a challenge level, which either beefs up the enemies or puts restrictions on what kinds of letters you can use. And there's a "crystal star" level, which is where the real gameplay happens; in crystal star levels, different enemies have different attributes that actually affect what words you can or should use against them (one might take extra damage from words beginning with a vowel, and one might be only damaged by words that involve letters from the corner of your grid). Crystal star levels are actually fun, since the different monsters feel different and are more than just blocks of tofu for you to spell words at. (Outside of the crystal star levels, the monsters feel very, very similar—they might do slightly different attacks to you, but they don't feel differentiated from each other at all.)

As far as presentation goes, the game feels half-assed. The music is awful, the graphics are boring (the monsters are all basically recolors of the same five or six sprites, and they aren't even animated), and while you're not playing this game for a gripping plot, even the paper-thin story is lackluster. This game lives and dies on the gameplay (which isn't really a bad thing, since the gameplay is the most important part of any game, but still), since it doesn't really do anything to make itself pretty.

Overall, this game's only real strength is the price. If you're looking for a word-combat game that actually feels well-made, you're better off playing Word Realms. If you've already beaten Word Realms and Bookworm Adventures and just want something else in the genre, this game will keep you amused for a couple hours, but it won't reinvent your world in any sense. I don't regret the few dollars I spent on it, but neither am I clamoring for a sequel, at least not without some kind of assurance that said sequel would have a lot of improvements to it.

Letter Quest: Grimm's Journee is a lot of fun.

Basically, if you are into Scrabble, you can only love this. I personally use it as a go-to game when I have only 5 minutes ahead.
Achievements are rather simple to obtain which is always a bonus when you don't want to leave things unfinished.
(Bejeweled 3 caused me a great deal of frustration). I have done 3/4 of it so far, being a non-English speaker makes it more difficult to form words but is very entertaining.

It could seem a bit pricey but I always tend to convert the price of videogames/hours of gameplay. 50p an hour is rather cheap compared to a cinema ticket, don't you agree?

I started playing this game after trying out a few word games and this is by far the best one out there; it has some RPG elements, it has nice colors and even a nice little story. What I actually prefer the most though are the challenges and the special conditions on some levels. Instead of just pushing you to find the longest word possible (still not a bad thing however), the game will push you to find different kinds of shorter words. I find that, all in all, this game is not only really enjoyable, it is also a good way to improve your vocabulary. More so, while going through the community hub, I found that the devs are really involved in making this the best game possible for everyone (i.e. the colourblind fix update).

This is not a bad game! Of the two recent titles that resemble Bookworm Adventures (the other being Words for Evil), this is the more RPG of the pair. It's turn-based, so you can take your time in assembling words and figure out what to do.

That said, while it's not a bad game, I found myself enjoying it less and less as the game went on and it began adding in more and more conditions to the enemies, or the "challenge" stages that consisted of nothing but "enemies have 2x HP". This is a game that expects you to replay earlier levels for more currency to unlock new items every once in a while, and maybe return to them to unlock new paths on "Hard Stages". If you just play the "required" levels, the game actually ends quite early, and there's a bonus world at the end which is sort of an HP sponge slog.

I will also admit I dislike this game's dictionary - it feels incredibly limited, which is ill-suited for a game wherein you need to create words it recognizes as such to play. I know I'm being negative here, but I'm just pointing out that this is not my jam and maybe look at that other title I mentioned if it doesn't click for you. There's a demo to try out which I highly recommend, because this one is gonna be polarizing by playstyle.

If you’re a fan of word adventure type games, then this is a perfect game for you! I take it from the beginning and I don`t regret that! Good graphics, full of upgrades(weapons, magical books, armory), english dictionary integrated(you can see words definitions). After level 20 you unlock Expert Mode. Three types of challange : time challange, fixed number of words challange, guess letters challange. You must replay some lower levels to make crystals if you want to advance to highest levels. BONUS: Remastered version it's free! Anyway I recommend this game to all word gamers fans!

An extremely solid game in the vein of Bookworm Adventures, that is to say, the woefully under-populated "Scrabble combat" genre. A 15-letter word bank with less RNG smoothing than BA creates a slight bit more difficulty inherently, and the game pulls no punches, expecting large words and smart item-purchasing decisions from the very start.

One downside compared to Bookworm Adventures is that specialized / bonus tiles are given at random, with gear and passives to improve your chances, as opposed to being rewarded for creating high-length or high-value words. The game also seems to favor a grindy approach to building up your resources, as the gem flow in the early-to-mid game is a bit unstable, and the potion costs are exorbitant. A larger variety of chest minigames would not have gone unappreciated, for that matter.

Upsides include a MUCH larger array of modifications, gear, and enhancement items, as well as a more robust dictionary. There are some sly references here and there, and a very good stable of achievements and challenges.

Music tracks are regrettably short, and sound effects have punch but unique ones are few and far between. The end result is audio that can become somewhat grating after a straight hour or so of play.

All in all, it's an extremely solid and welcome addition to the genre, but not without its flaws. I'd recommend it over any other game like it that I have played, however, despite those issues.

At first glance you might think this is the sort of game you would use to help your kids or pets practice spelling, but as any Scrabble player knows, words can be really long, so even a cunning linguist can find a challenge here. Not only that, but the cherry on the icing on the cake on the plate is that the wordplay is nestled neatly in the trappings of an RPG, like a Jimmy Dean sausage patty in a light fluffy croissant.

The ability to equip gear, raise your stats, and even drink potions all contribute to the RPG feel, while various special and less than special types of letter tiles force more strategic play than simply 'what's the longest word I can find'. If that isn't enough, each level has challenge modes such as time limited, or words must be longer than your arm, or you can only win if you live in Iowa. Letter Quest is a pretty cool game is what I'm saying here. Think about trying it.

I'm Otter Chaos, and I approve this message.
