About the Game
From the creator of the Syberia series, experience Benoit Sokal's first adventure game masterpiece.
In 1932, Alexandre Valembois was a young explorer who, with his native friend Antonio Álvarez, wanted to make a name for himself by exploring the mysterious Amerzone region. Befriended by the natives of the region, he witnessed a strange ritual involving a giant egg of the famed white birds. Wanting to prove that the white birds existed, Alexandre betrayed the natives' trust and stole the mysterious egg. Alas, upon his returning to France, nobody believed Alexandre or his journals about the Amerzone.
Sixty years have passed, and the world has changed. World War II has come and gone, the Amerzone remains unexplored and closed off to outsiders by its despotic leader, Antonio Álvarez. Monsieur Alexandre Valembois is an old man at the end of his life, living alone in a lighthouse and wishing to fix his mistake. This is when, a young reporter pays a visit to the old Alexandre Valembois regarding his adventures...
Can you unravel the mystery of the white birds?

Hum... Dated. This is a P&C adventure. The graphics are old as dirt. The music is OK. The story might be the strongest point.
Honestly, I stopped playing after an hour because it's just too old and too dark, with outdated mechanics and an overwhelming amount of reading. This game might appeal to nostalgic players and dedicated game archeologists, but apart from some charmingly old-fashioned models and a decent storyline, it offers very little in terms of entertainment.
The silver lining is that a remake is coming out this year and THEN I'll visit that Amerzone place. For now, I'll feed this ancient version to the crocodiles.
When doves fly.
A beautiful classic point-and-click adventure that is short, easy, and engaging. I loved the lore and discovering as much as I could about my journey. Their is interesting characters you meet along the way just makes me wish the interactions were longer and more detailed... I am eager to see the remake.
I only found out that this game exists recently, when the remake has been anounced. I'm a fan of the Syberia games as I played them when I was a young. Playing Benoît Sokal's first game? Sounds fun and it was. The game has a strong 90's aura around it and it felt really great to play it. I think it looks very nice, the sound and music are a noticeably weaker point. The story is.. strange, but fun overall. The game is very short with super easy puzzle elements and and infinite walking speed which is fun. I've spent most of my 4 hours of the game reading text, but the artbook/journal thing looks really great. I enjoyed this short experience. I defenitely recomment it when it's on sale. And of course I cant wait for the remake!
Yes and no. I picked this up on a deep discount - even though I still have the original four-CD disk set in the original box - just so that I could play on Windoze 11 without having to wonder if the ancient installer still works (and sometimes these old games wouldn't run unless you had the game CD in a drive, and my machine doesn't even have an optical drive), and to compare it with the up-and-coming new remaster.
A great trip down memory lane, seems to run just fine, but it really is an "olde skewl" point-n-click game, with some of the exasperating features of pre-rendered slide-show type games, so this is definitely not for everybody (especially you young'uns).
Navigation is often confusing (you're facing one way, click to move somewhere, and sometimes it's not immediately clear exactly which direction you're facing when you move, or exactly where you are in a 3D space), and there are some "spot the pixel" puzzles (i.e., you're in a room with some stuff in it, and if you casually move the cursor around the screen it looks like there is nothing with which to interact, but if you move it slowly, and stop at JUST the right place, you discover there's a switch or button or something).
Sokal is no longer with us, so I don't feel bad suggesting that you wait for a deep sale before buying this one - but I'll still give it a positive review because this is the game that started his video game career, and while it is definitely showing its age, it is a product of its time, and I still remember being wow-ed by it back when it first came out.
Edit: After having finished this game, I can no longer recommend it. WAY too many "find the exact pixel" issues, way too much trying to navigate through low-resolution jungles looking for some tiny tiny thing that you need, too much "need to see a detail in an extremely gloomy poor-lit crappy resolution room", etc... Sorry, Benoit ...
Amerzone: The Explorer's Legacy is a first-person graphic adventure game from 1999.
You play a journalist who retraces an explorer's past expedition in the Amerzone, in order to right his wrongs.
By interweaving fact and fiction the game manages to create an interesting world
with memorable elements such as the Hydraflot.
I enjoyed this game, so it pains me that I can't recommend it to the majority with a clean conscience
(oldschool graphic adventure fans, who know what they are getting into are the exception).
The reasons are simply money and age.
13€ for a game of this age and length is a rip-off,
but even if you buy it for a more adequate price in a sale there is still its age.
Aside from the technical aspects (I only encountered some sound bugs).
From a modern point of view this game is brimming with wasted potential (in my opinion).
The interesting world and setup suffers from very short and mostly empty chapters as well as dull gameplay.
While the Lighthouse chapter starts strong with lots of worldbuilding and interesting puzzles,
the game becomes surprisingly straightforward once the journey begins.
And while the puzzles are easy, they mostly succumb to a frustrating search for all the needed items.
I hope that the upcoming remake can fix a lot of the issues I have with this game,
which is why I won't recommend the original.
Overall a fun game. Puzzles are pretty easy, but still fun to go through. The world is awesome. The backbones of the story are interesting, but not too fleshed out. I am super excited for the remake, it seems like it'll fix the issues I had with this original game!
