This visual style of this game is really incredible, it looks amazing and adds a lot of tension in dark places, the sound design is also pretty good, the writing is a bit awkward and stiff in a lot of places, english is clearly not the writer's first language, which is fine, and the general plot seemed to be going in a "my mom was abusive and now I'm traumatized and murder women who remind me of her" direction, I get it, you watched Psycho, which I wasn't really into, but I'll never know where it went cause about 2 hours in I ran into a game breaking bug where I had to run under a sequence of spotlights, and one of them would just turn off as I ran into it meaning I couldn't progress, kinda sucks big time. all in all, while the visuals are great, but that's all it has going for it which is why this is a thumbs down for me, save ruining bugs suck on top of a very uninspired story
The noir style is great, graphic artwork is beautiful, ambient sounds and music are well chosen and they create a gloomy atmosphere. It's a shame that it. is. very. boring.

Amazing shots, good composition and artstyle. THese were the reasons I was interested in this title.
Unfortunately gameplay is a little bit janky, changes between cameras are abrupt and can really throw you off.
Just remember to save often :) it can get frustrating xD
If there was a "neutral / buyer beware" option I'd choose that. I knew about the criticisms, and judged the art style, noir setting and intriguing gameplay worth a little fighting the controls, but the flaws really are too severe to recommend this outright. The sad thing is the game's flaws are also its strengths:
- infrequent saving builds tension
- burning through matches places pressure on the player
- sudden intentional camera changes suit the noir style and make it a challenge to navigate through what otherwise might be very simple area designs
- unpredictable ghost movement keeps you on edge
- ghosts are grey blurs in the dark, hinted at by audio cues and the flickering of matches: adds tension and difficulty
Alone, and even paired, these make for a challenging, tense experience. Combine all of them, though, and they merge into a perfect storm of frustration that does away with any tension that had been building during the earlier levels. There's no better illustration than the end run of Chapter 3. A music box starts playing, the lights go out, all the ghosts come out to dance... it's wonderfully creepy, and then you die and your problems really begin. See, the game has an auto-save system. It's rarely used, but this would be the perfect opportunity: a few seconds before the run, so that upon death you can attempt it again almost immediately - stressful, but no great loss. Instead, this is what happens:
1. Manual save in an armchair
2. You activate an item, triggering a small unskippable cutscene. You then pick up another item, triggering another small unskippable cutscene. Your match goes out. You relight your match.
3. The room fills with ghosts, moving randomly in darkness, almost invisible and made harder to avoid by camera angles that often force you to walk towards the camera (so you cannot see any ghosts in your path until it is too late)
4. You die.
Reset at (1) forcing you to play through the tedious sequence of (2) before your inevitable death in (3).
Later, you find yourself in a room similarly flooded with ghosts in which you are likely to die, and again the save system proves itself your real enemy: the last manual save is not in the previous room, but two rooms before, so you must play through the first easy room (which on repetition rapidly becomes tedious) before being allowed to re-attempt the one that killed you.
And so here is the game's flaw, in brief: mechanics enforce randomness, while save design makes that randomness frustrating. I still enjoyed the first 2.5 chapters, but don't get this one full price.

Stylistically this the coolest game I've played in the last decade.
Fans of old school survival horror will be at home here. This type of gameplay is a relic from another age, so I think that's why the reviews aren't higher. That said, I find it refreshing for that very reason. In a world where I can easily categorize every new game neatly I enjoyed playing a game that is different. It's an adventure game. Exploring the world is the fun. I found the narrative a little verbose and confusing, but don't let that stop you from trying out this game if you're curious. It's got terrific atmosphere, style and somehow manages to mash up two genres in a way that feels organic - noir and horror - I'm not sure I've seen this done before but the devs have done it so well here.
