I love the game but wish they would update it to work on new mac os systems.
My biggest complaint about the game is that I cannot travel from an explored system to an explored system. I have to traverse a roundabout path through out of the way systems just to get to my destination system because the game has pathways between star systems just to make the galaxy look like a spiral or cluster.
You can research more advanced engines as the game goes on. But, eventually, you hit a point where it takes you 1 turn to reach the adjoining system. After that, your engine speed means absolutely nothing, because you have to travel from system to system, and can never take a direct route.
A great successor to Moo 2 (Moo 3 was terrible). Fans have been waiting decades for a suitable successor and here it is.
good
it is awesome
Not super deep, but some good fun.
Not super hard to learn either.
It can drag in some sections of the game, where your waiting many turns for some ships and buildings to build.
But for the price, its a very solid game.
Feels like a fine remake of MoO2. It really is more MoO2 with some fixes and better ideas - I don't like the tech tree idea, but the way you research a technology where it gives options but usually has a core benefit is a small but really helpful change. Visuals are nice, voice acting is fine, it does feel like they loved MoO2 as well.
I AM THE MASTER OF ORION!!!!!!!!
Yeah everything in this game is real.
There are still several bugs to be worked on. The most common one I encountered over the past 2 days is the infinite processing turn. You are stuck in limbo, unable to view your ships and planets from the star map but can still access the icons across the top of your screen.
I like the fact that this game isn't an easy win. and it very customizable to my style of preferred gameplay. Has a decent AI to keep the game challenging.
aaagh it constantly changes the zoom by itself and the zoom controls are way too sensitive aargh
no. this one just does not work. the antarans (?) just come in and wipe out your home planet period. i even cheated and modded for more beginning perks on a new race and racing the tech tree for better equiped ships to fight them seems to be a waste of time.
this can not be moo. a stripped down version maybe.
Needs the patch for proper gameplay
Ai cheats and that is enough to not recommend it. It's fine to give it some bonuses but when it magically shows up in the same tile with overwhelming force in the early game even when you don't have any adjoining systems that is BS.
Overall a very fun game and a nice addition to the MOO line. It does have an annoying tendency to crash at some important point so save often.
Solid space based civ type game that I keep going back to year after year
Even with being an old game it still keeps my interest
To summarize: It is about 98% Moo2 and about 2% Moo3 combat system with better graphics and voice overs. Cinematic mode is great for fleet battles but you'll find managing fleet operations easier on the 2D screen (similar to Moo3) Also combat is not turn based it is basically real time strategy. Weapon cool downs for example represent turns. So ship design choice is important to that aspect.
It's just as addicting as Moo2 and mods add some uniqueness to the game.
Antarans are beast in this game be careful with your fleet numbers. ;) (There is a mod to change the numbers of them as well)
Things I wish it had though from Moo2:
1. Instant travel from one star system to another (Jump gates don't seem to work or I just haven't figured them out yet.)
2. Cannot capture enemy ships (No Assault Shuttles, Tractor Beams, Boarding Pods/Parties)
3. Still haven't figured out yet how to get to Antares to ef them up either probably a me issue so far
4. Need a mod for OrionTechs (Particle Beams + Damper fields)
Boring. Nothing new to the genre. Yeah, it has killing voices for the characters, but it's still the same as all the other planetary strategy games ever.
classic 4x
Good game, even though it's old. Better than civ 6.
While it is only reminiscent of the original (it inherits many of the mechanics of MOO 2 and 3), it's still a good game with delightful graphics - on the proviso that you install the community patch and perhaps a mod or two to help keep pollution in check. The pollution mechanic in the base game makes it frustrating to play to the point of annoyance.
Steam tracks too much information on the user
I still play the oldies when I want a quick fix. This version takes the best from the MOO legacy and puts it all on a higher plateau. Way more detailed in a good way, and so fantastic!
You are limited to 4 ship blueprints. You can update a blueprint and then upgrade the ships that were built according to that blueprint. But if you delete a blueprint, you can never again upgrade ships that used that blueprint. Why? Neither of these limitations makes any rational sense. What is the fact of reality that prohibits you from having more than 4 blueprints? Why can't you upgrade ships to new blueprints that have the exact same design as that ship's updated blueprint would have? This design philosophy, this disconnecting of reality from gameplay mechanics, this imposition of senseless contrivances, is so loathsome to me that I quit the game, probably to never play it again.
It doesnt really do anything that other games dont do better. It's not bad. There's just nothing in it that has much depth to it at all and it's bland. Cookie cutter 4x game IMO.
Great game, many variations can be played.
Been a fan of Orion since the original Orion came out.
A little re-made piece of nostalgia, as good as the original !
It boggles my mind that they still have not fixed the endless turn bug that completely breaks the game. I got this error 28 turns in on my first replay after downloading again. Do not reward lazy development work with your hard earned coin.
A fantastic 4X game that goes a bit beyond "Civilization, But In Space." If you like Stellaris, but wish the games didn't take nearly as long and weren't nearly as complicated, give Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars a go.
I've played through it several times as-is and enjoyed it, but the game really comes into its own with the addition of two extremely popular mods in the workshop (5X Patch and the accompanying Code Update). All told, I've very much enjoyed my time in the game and I'm looking forward to trying out a few more things before I move on to other games. Recommend!
The game is fun if you're a fan of the older games. I've played for almost 282 hours at the time of this review. I gave up on controlling combat a long time ago as I feel that is the games weak point. I'll just do auto battle determination or watch it in a top down view. I also don't do any ship building myself, just auto design when new tech is discovered. Even with the lack of some of the things I enjoyed most about MOO2, the game is entertaining and I keep coming back to it. The mod system adds additional play time IMO.
I like it but it is not as detailed or developed as Stellaris. It is easier to play and has all the old nostalgic feeling and it is pretty fun to play and forgiving.
Its watered down moo, but its moo. The only change I absolutely don't agree with is movement by links, which is a big change. Tactical combat feels better in Moo2, and I personally think they need to stop real timing evereything. The moo2 system was much better.
It can be as micromanaging or leave it up to the computer to make decisions as you'd like. Faithful to the originals, brought into the modern age. Lots of fun if you like 4X games.
I've been playing this series since forever and this one is the best yet. Super replayable and uber addictive. It's always installed.
A great update from the original.
Nice graphics. But stars! had more substance; neither lets you design your own ships.
Problems:
1) In MoO, if you improve a ship defensively, your attack value goes down!
2) In our solar system, we have 3 gas giants. In the game, the most I have ever seen is two.
3) We currently know of about 5,000 exoplanets. In the game, we don't even know what the one is in our starting system.
4) We have about a BILLION asteroids in our system. In the game, we get none in our system.
5) Of the asteroids in our system, a mere _15_ are worth $45 QUINTILLION, we don't get anywhere near that amount of money in the game.
6) 3rd turn of the game and I get hit with pirates!
7) Apparently the game came out 8 years ago, no new versions/improvements--other than mods--and where are the mod makers?
From the Wright brothers flight (1903) to landing on the moon took 66 years; where do you thnk we can be in another 66 years?
Unfortunately, I just cannot recommend this game. It looks decent, but almost everything else is mediocre or worse. The complexity mostly turns out to be niggling busywork with little in the way of actually interesting choices, the ha-ha humour gets old within an hour, the AI is so passive that after you beat it in one or two battles, it'll just settle for standing still while you roll over it planet by planet. One third of the way through the tech tree and one already feels one has seen everything the game has to offer.
The worst part, sort of? While some of the things wrong with the game (like the excessive micromanagement and the passive AI) are obvious, much of the rest is just... There. It's not even broken in a way that's interesting or something one can point to, it's just that after just a few hours of gameplay, it becomes boring.
And this is coming from someone for whom space strategies are their favourite game genre and who loved the original Master of Orion, so I should have been the exact target audience for this.
Words words... whatever its MOO, buy it. Only gripe is no turn based combat.
Long time player of the Master of Orion franchise. The current iteration keeps up with the previous ones, and retains nearly all of the original game play features. Not as graphics intense as other modern games and could use a few tweaks in the operational side (fleet management similar to Sins 2 and a better upgrade function). Otherwise, it is a great way to play a few hours of games, more so with the turn based that has become more important as I have gotten older (kids always interrupting). Don't expect the greatest graphics and don't expect the most modern feel to the game, but for those of us that have played for Masters for decades, its worth the spend.
Really really good game. I like it so much.
Great game
all I wish for is a newer game.
Prettly cool! I was a big fan of Master of Orion 2. And this have similar vibes.
A good version of Masters of Orion although the AI goes from too easy to impossible, which is frustrating. I miss some of the action of Masters of Orion 2 but the graphics are way better. I am not keen on how you take command in the ship battles.
Has always been a great game; MODs have revitalized this game.
It's ok, but I would rather just play the original MOO.
I find that it doesn't have that typical "one more turn" 4X attribute.
Nonetheless, probably still the go-to MOO game that you can play.
One of the most under appreciated remakes ever. Michael Dorn.....Great music and atmosphere. Really only let down slightly by an uninspired UI. This will give you hours of fun if you approach it with the right attitude :)
This Master of Orion is a remake of the absolute classic 4X game which is Master of Orion II. To be frank, MoO2 is an old game and it has not aged as well (although some may disagree with this). Hence, it is a worthwhile objective to release and updated version with new visuals, quality of life improvements and features which Master of Orion attempts.
Overall, I'd just say that Master of Orion is a competent and solid 4X games that leans heavily into the original MoO2 without changing anything drastic about the core DNA. It does this in such an inoffensive and elegant way that it doesn't blemish the legacy of the original game. On the other side, this remaster is simply a bit bland. Everything works, looks sleek and sounds just fine, it's all cohesive and in a good package. Yet, it just lacks a bit of charm or that pezass that kep you hooked in the original. There is just a tangible feeling of having played such a game because it is in amalgam of existing 4X games in terms of style, mechanics and aesthetics.
The game performs nicely and is easy on the eyes but I'd rather spend my time playing another game that has more character or unique elements to offer. Get this on a sale or if you like the original but cannot be bothered with the outdated jank.
It's a good game and the devs tried to carefully recreate a new version that stays true to the original. I just think that something was lost during this process and feels a tad to sterile.
