It's old but there's very few modern experiences quite like it.
It should be warned, that due to it's age, it's quite buggy. But still playable.

If you like RTS and Action games, you won't regret playing this one. It's an experience you won't get anywhere else!

The game is not bad, just old.
There are bugs, soldiers sometimes get stuck, bad control and balance but nothing fatal.
The bosses are like a sponge and it could have been better explain the game.
There is only some audio at some points and the items take up a lot of space.
But most problems are either because it is old or it has been there for a while.
Solution easy level of difficulty with only centered around one character several soldiers and exploding arrows.
Preferably Joan of Arc because she is the most common and has the most things about her and the sword with crosses.
For me, the biggest minus is that there are only 8 levels, although it is bigger than the previous one, but unfortunately they are short and without skirmishes.
The pluses are you play with Joan of Arc and she's sexy and you kick English ass and there's a lot to kick.
And the story ends better than the original.
Preferably with a discount for at least one playthrough, it's not bad.

TL;DR: Core gameplay loop is obtuse, repeptitive, and annoyingly mundane. Help is practically useless. Enemy spams. Graphics hold up comparatively well with FanSH's HD Update mod, but the audio is still horrible. Very little narrative for excruciatingly long levels. Zero QC.

Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc is an ambitious game that falls short of making the cut in almost every way and I can only blame it on the lack of a proper Quality Check. While I picked this game up because of the nostalgia of playing the first level as a child, playing the entirety of it is more annoying than pleasurable. One can tell why the series was cancelled once they try and play the game.

The plot is very simple. The game starts off with Joan of Arc making her way to Orleans to gain the upper hand against the invading English during the 100 years war and deliver the Dauphin of Reims for coronation. However, that's as far as the story goes. For the vast majority of the game, you're essentially playing out the various sieges and battles in a way that's not entirely historically accurate apart from the broader lore of the level itself. It also takes artistic liberty with historical characters and accounts, but I don't hold that against the game. The main takeaway is that there is next to no plot development whatsoever.

The gameplay is also similar. The first level is probably the shortest and sweetest part of it. The rest of the game, however, goes downhill from there. You're essentially supposed to take on entire armies with the aid of three of your generals that you'll obtain throughout the course of the game. However, the generals are very weak compared to the protagonist, Joan d'Arc, and keep fleeing the field of battle, leaving you to deal with your own troubles yourself. You can also recruit soldiers under you, but given the sheer number of enemies that you need to take out, they just get swallowed whole in no time. This game also has an RTS mode but I haven't been able to reach that stage in the game.
The core gameplay loop involves you annoyingly taking out the entire English army every level. To add to the annoyance, the game also has archers, that you'll need to chase down on foot while they keep trying to run away and constantly dodging your attacks in a game of tag unless you have arrows. Then there are the bosses can essentially one-shot you if you're not careful and take as much time as their armies. Finally, there are sometimes obtuse objectives in missions such as protecting civilians or escorting them to safety. The civilians are typically bugged out while the larger battle more or less plays out like a computer simulation. With no way to actually skip these segments, they make for the few parts of the game that actually test your patience. All of this gets combines to make the game a test of your tolerance where you spend more than an hour or two trying to painstakingly clear every single mission while tediously mowing down hordes of enemies and hoping that the RNG works out in your favour. The silver lining here is that the game has an RPG system where your characters grow stronger with each level and shiny new equipment, making the repetitive battles less of a pain down the line and just more mundane instead.

The level design in this game can't decide whether it wants to be open-ended or linear. On one hand, you've got an entire map to play with. On the other hand, you've got only a more or less linear pathway through the map with very few options to choose as to how you want to approach your mission objectives, that are practically exhaustive to begin with. You do have multiple roads, but all of them lead to Rome and not all can be accessed without the abilities of generals. With that being said, if you think you can use some advanced strategies or battlefield tactics using the RTS mode, you can't. You don't have enough troops to win what every encounter essentially boils down to: a skirmish ending in a war of attrition. In that regard, splitting up your troops is guaranteed to kill them faster since the enemy army is definitely much larger and will always win the skirmish. The terrain is pretty similar all around and the way that the game works, it hardly gives you any advantage for using the terrain. The level design, like the rest of this game, is pretty mundane especially when you consider that you need to invariably cover all areas on the map anyway.

Needless to say that the graphics don't hold up on a game this old. However, FanSH has created an HD Update Mod that greatly improves upon the graphics and makes it look far better than it did back in the day. That being said, the animations are still clunky and apart from the issues with hit registry, it feels like playing on tank controls in most cases. The camera doesn't always pan the way you want it to and the game overall just feels pretty low-budget because of it.

The audio follows suit with the music and environments being pretty decent. But the voice lines sound like they were recorded off a phone call. Not only that, only the controllable characters have voices. The rest are just meant to be read by yourself. Another issue that I noticed was how there are countless spelling mistakes and inconsistencies with the names and the general text and at points, even the French in the game is wrong. I'm not fluent in French at all, but such basic mistakes combined with the way the characters sound in the end result tell me that there was no Quality Control involved with the game to begin with. There were even times when there were so many sound sources on the screen that the sound literally skipped and lagged.

This game is also riddled with bugs. The enemies have no unit slotting, so if you get hit once while you're surrounded, you'll essentially be stun-locked until you can either manage to escape because of the game's wonky hit registry or you die. Thankfully, the former bug is more common and you don't always die if an enemy gets the first hit on you. Your allies don't always follow you like they're supposed to and you'll often find them stuck on a random hill or shrub or just unwilling to come with you. It's even worse when they keep running back to a certain point of the map, entirely ignoring battles for no reason whatsoever. Not only that, protection missions are totally RNG based and its up to a coin toss whether you can succeed in any given try. To make things even more annoying, all of the bosses have what is known as an armoured move in fighting games where the boss is invulnerable to all attacks while using that move. The issue is that the bosses love spamming these moves, making battles even more long drawn. Finally, you can't skip levels using another person's saves either because loading levels you've completed is also bugged and causes the game to crash or just hang instead. I found out about this because I tried skipping levels because I thought I had a bug.

All things considered, Joan of Arc is one game that shot for the moon but didn't even leave the Earth's atmosphere, let alone become lost in the stars. The gameplay is repetitive and mundane when it is not a pain and the controls and animations are janky. The sound design isn't the best and neither is the accuracy or consistency of the dialogue, names, or general text in a game with a barely-existent narrative that assumes lots of creativity with history to make ends meet. Add all the bugs and a general lack of quality control to it all and you've got one mess that isn't really worth the time spent playing it. Not in this day and age at least, even though I recall having played better games from before when this game came out.
