Really nice to return to Saxton. Looking forward to more games!
Idk why the launch menu is the only thing that counts as gameplay which is both confusing and sucks.
However, this is such an amazing little addition into the Lost Crown series (the og game is called the Lost Crown, and for some reason, the others are the Last Crown, but who am I to judge?) and I am deeply into the story of Saxton, its villagers and ofc, Nigel Danvers.
I love this game, it has so many little side stories, just like the first game, alongside continuing the main story - except for no mention of Hadden, which is curious.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game, but I realy want to be able to pet Mr Tibbs and George!
Also I am loving the closure from the last game, about Prof Hardacre and Mr Gruel. Such a sweet game, releasing the ghosts. It's so good, and I am very impressed by the improvement in gameplay mechanics <3 VERY EXCITED FOR BLACKENROCK! PLEASE MAKE MORE GAMES! I NEED TO KNOW WHERE THIS STORY GOES!!
Awesome immersive, point and click games, with a hint of scare. Unusual in that they are made by such a small team, in a small town which features in a lot of these games. If you play one, you really will want to play them all. There is nobody else out there doing anything like them.
I can't recommend enough!
Another great point-and-click adventure game from Jonathan Boakes / Darkling Room. All his games are well produced, great fun, and get the brain cells working. Midnight Horror is no exception. Highly recommended.
Great little Halloween 🎃 mystery. Highly recommend! Not to be missed if you adore the Dark Fall Lost Crown series. My only issue is that the Steam Overlay does not work with this game. Hoping this gets fixed. The Last Crown Midnight Horror is a solid addition to this amazing series.
I was really looking forward to this, the first game is quirky and has it's flaws but I really enjoyed it. This one was way too short, I was really disappointed by the length as just before it ends the main character Nigel even says there is much more to the mystery as if you are finishing a chapter, not the whole game :(
great addition to the Nigel Danvers series. Gameplay can be a bit clunky, but story is good and graphics are OK-ish
I would give this game a 2.5/5 Stars.
It's one of those games that I would give a neutral hand thumb, 50 50. I thought it was so cute and charming with the whole Halloween theme and loved being back in the town of Saxton with the same characters of The Lost Crown. I did enjoy some of it and some parts were funny but I felt like it was getting repetitive about half way to the ending and the story is too short. It seems like it just needs some fixing in technical issues and possibly has a bug as I got stuck in a video recorder camera scene that I couldn't move on from where the back out arrow didn't show up at all, so I ended up pressing ctrl alt delete a couple times over. There are 2 screen resolution options on a mini menu before the actual game menu starts up, both options are just bad, one cutting off the bottom portion of the screen and the other making the game appear in a small box so I had to play around and tweak some settings to match up with my pc screen. I noticed that the Steam overlay wasn't working with this game and I was playing a few hrs but it says 7 mins, I think this is a Steam issue though and not the devs. I couldn't even take screen shots and my other games work fine with the overlay. I'd recommend to anyone who is thinking about playing this game to play the The Lost Crown instead. I really wanted to love this one as much as the first game. I'll continue to play Jonathan Boakes games as I find them charming but sadly this game fell a bit short compared to The Lost Crown and so I can't really recommend this one the way it is.
Please ignore the 20min playtime, the playtime-tracking system with this game is broken. It only tracks how long you've kept the game launcher open, and once you start playing it stops tracking. Weird.
The game itself is around 3 hours long and is probably no more than 1/8th of the original in terms of length and content, and it's... well... not bad I suppose, like a demo of what's to come in Blackenrock, an upcoming big installment. Meanwhile, it's great to see the good old characters from The Lost Crown and talk to them again, as well as look at Saxton from a few new different angles. Sadly, the accessible part of the town has been diminished to a single street and a pier next to it. The horror element has suffered as well, it's been pretty much nullified because Saxton is having a Halloween party, and there's a lot of folks enjoying themselves in the town, there's even a wannabe DJ in the pub making some bee-bop sounds. The whole tone is lighter, forget any gloomy caves or dark forests.
Still, it's good while it lasts and offers some ghost-hunting of course, even if nowhere close to The Lost Crown. But if you liked that game, try The Last Crown as well, as we wait for Blackenrock to hit the shelves, which judging by its progress I can only hope I'll ever live to see. Although I shouldn't be such an A$$, I'm sure the gang is doing all they can :)
A charming if rough around the edges point-and-click game.
Graphics and characters models are fairly basic, but occasional splashes of color add to the appealing and unique art-style. While puzzles are fairly basic, they're also intuitive, so I never wasted time trying to find that one cryptic answer the developers expected. The main premise is executed fairly good, with the protagonist using the real-life equipment for hunting ghosts instead of some fantastical items.
Overall, the game has a nice atmosphere, humor and fun enough gameplay. Made me interested in checking out the original game simply titled "The Lost Crown".
6/10.
BARELY a thumbs up. On average I might expect somebody to play this game 2-3 hours then quit out of having long finished the game, or getting bored of it. The big problem is there are few locations to explore compared to other games and it gets old relatively quickly. Even the dialogue trees are often repeated to the point. Only recomended for hardcore point and click fans.
I'll say right off the bat that I"d only recommend buying this if ( big if) you have played Lost Crown and IF your waiting for the third installment and IF you don't mind playing a rather shorter in between game. That said, I really enjoyed Lost Crown and wanted to get the next two chapters in Nigel's adventures but I found Midnight Horror a bit lackluster and just felt like this was a fill in that could have easily been attached to the third installment as a prequel to that one instead of a seperate game or something that could have been attached to Lost Crown as a bonus game.
I honestly prefer the graphics of the first game even though this one is supposed to look more polished the characters to me just didn't have the same look I was used to from the first one so some of the characters we revisit felt as if totally new actors took on a role in some show your supposed to believe are the same people.
Your in much smaller area then the first game so exploring around thinking you can possibly go to some of the same places or even areas in the same places are different so you feel to restricted, it loses the feel the other game had in finding new places to explore and you didn't get the same feeling you may bump into a new situation or clue to what was going on.
This takes place on Halloween and centers around a party and a ghost story but the story was lackluster too and I realize it's really just a lead in to the third installment but that said I still don't see why this couldn't have been then attached to third one as an intro to it and then just had both packaged in one game.
I"m only putting recommend because there is no maybe if you enjoyed the first, waiting for the third and wanted to continue the adventure however I really didn't feel like this was much of an adventure. I still look forward to the third installment and really hope there is much more similar feel to the first one in the third one then the second one because if it's anything like the second installment I'll be a bit disappointed.
If you read my review on Lost Crown then you know I purchased that game when it came out and had the boxed version and had never finished it at the time and when I saw that steam had it I really wanted to revisit it and finally got a chance to finish the game. I didn't know there was a second one and a third coming out so having just finished the first installment I was compelled to get this one, hey it cost me the price of a small starbuck's coffee and was added to the game gifts to myself for my birthday so it filled in a few hours of time. just wish there had been more to it.
I am a big fan of the last three games by this team.
I cannot honestly give a good review for this game.
For starters it is tiny, it should really be considered as a small DLC or fun add on for the lost crown, it retains none of its eerieness or great story, its quite cheesy and light hearted which is fine and not why I am giving a negative review.
I am giving a negative review as I got very stuck very near the end of the game, I resorted in using a walkthru and had done everything that walk thru said, I then went to a different walkthru and I had missed an unbelievably trivial single step that was stopping a vital character from moving to an area they should be at .....
I went on the forums before I saw this and have to agree with a lot of what I read, a lot of people do not like being stuck for ages due to missing a totally unrelated "task" or conversation line that stopped the game from progressing.
The other games never felt like you did silly things that didnt make sense to make the plot go forward, this short game is full of that.
If you loved the lost crown and still want a very short and lighthearted game then you may like this, even without the frustration of being stuck over something silly and minor I still cannot recommend this game, it simply pales into comparrison compared to the lost crown.
I was little put off by some negative comments that say how slow the game is etc., but when I play it, it reminds me of classic old point and click adventures. People saying it is slow or boring probablly don´t know how an actual point and click adventure looks like. Not many good like this is still made nowaydays, so I´m very happy with it. Maybe the puzzles are too hard on me, but it is very nice game.
Fans of Nigel, Lucy and Saxton in general will feel a warm familiarity with the place, whilst newcomers will get a nice introduction to the characters and history to this haunted town. Blackenrock is just around the corner too!
As the original game was one of my very favorites, I was delighted to see this short interlude game appear on Steam. I personally hadn't had a clue there was such a thing in the works! But I snapped it up the minute I saw it, and I'm completely delighted by it.
As a caveat, you will want to have played The Last Crown (original game) before you play this, or you will lose a good chunk of pretty much everything in the translation.
Playtime runs about 3-4 hours depending on how much you lollygag around, or in my case, wander off to answer the phone and forget to shut it off.
From a technical standpoint, this game continues on the same atmosphere as the original; graphics, sounds, scenery, and character design are the same. Nigel's slightly-odd voice mannerisms are also still there (but for some reason, I find his somewhat Shatner-esque pauses endearing rather than irritating). It appears all previous voice actors reprised their roles.
From a plot standpoint, it's not particularly deep like it's predecessor, but it's not supposed to be. As a Halloween short and interlude between main games, it's perfect. Short and sweet, but leaving some questions which I suspect will lead into the next main game.
Gameplay is also the same as the previous game. Inventory, navigation, dialogue, etc. are similar if not identical. The ghost-hunting mechanics are very similar but have been souped up a little to give the player somewhat more control over the situation rather than taking static pictures and whatnot, and I appreciated that a lot.
All in all, this is worth it especially if you enjoyed the previous game. I know that I, at least, am waiting impatiently for the next installment of this series!
I just finished playing this engaging game. VERY cool and fun to see all the old "gang" again.
Love the black and white with splashes of colour.
I was sorry when it was over!
I only had one issue with the dancing but everything else ran smoothly .
Totally recommended! (I may have to play it again...)
Cannot WAIT for Blackenrock.
The Last Crown: Midnight Horror is a nice short thematic point and click adventure game that is a direct sequel to "The Lost Crown" and a prequel to the upcoming Blackenrock game from Darkling Room Studios. Like most of Mr. Boakes' games, there is a lot of optional activity and superfluous items you don't need. I carried arround that Hot Dog from beginning to end for example.
The adventure places you once again int he role of Nigel Danvers as you try to solve what appears to be a haunting at the local pub. The game oozes with atmosphere and style and I love that the came has kept the mostly black and white graphics which made the original game, The Lost Crown, so striking. The music, mood, visuals and atmophere should keep fans of TLC and the Darkfall games happy from beginning to end. You'll also find that events are somewhat more randomized than in most adventure games which tend to be extremely linear. An event with the police didn't occur with me until the very end of the game, while for most people I've talked to, it happened at the very beginning.
Now that said, the game is far from perfect. Although it took me 4.1 hours to beat, half of that time was reloading the game due to crashes or stalls. There's a well known bug that occurs when you hand in the DJ Voucher. Thankfully this is not necessary to finish the game so just don't do anything with it if you get it. I was surprised the game crashed on me four different times. Once after the seance and three other times in different rooms. I could play Batman: Arkham Knight without the slightest hiccup when it first came out yet this adventure game crashed on me several times. So remember to save regularly so you don't have to repeat things like I did!
Another thing to remember is that the game has some very small hot spots and, unlike some other modern adventure games, you can't just click the space button to see all the available locations. This does mean you'll be huting and pecking for things that you don't see or just outright don't trigger right away. Some of these include the wall by the rotting fish, the pots int he kitchen, the keyhole on the fourth door in floor two you gain access to towards the end of the game and so on. So be prepared to be thorough and don't be shy in asking for help in the community boards if you get stuck. TLC fans are a great lot and already people have been helping each other out left and right here on the game's Steam board. There will be times you get frustrated. Then once someone helps you along, the solution will make a lot of sense in retrospect. Just remember to pass the help along.
Overall, Midnight Horror is a fun but flawed game. I love the artistic style of the game and the story told here. It's a nice classic ghost story in the vein of some great Victorian writers andf it was the perfect game for the Halloween Holiday season.
A good, yet short teaser for Jonathan's next game The Last Crown: Blackenrock, many of us have waited a very long time to be able to play Blackenrock since The Lost Crown came out. This is a perfect Halloween story with lots of references to the first game.
It is very easy to get stuck and i found some items that seemed to have no point other than just being there. You will have to go back and forth a lot to check if you did the correct thing.
On the DJ Voucher scene, the game can bug out. Simply press F5 and hit No, it should bring your mouse pointer back up and you can leave the scene.
Enjoy and Happy Halloween! If you liked The Lost Crown, you will enjoy this short tale.
I haven't finished it yet, but I'm going to list that as a selling point. For a game that seemingly no one knew was even being made, it's confusingly well-crafted and substantial! I mean it. The graphics are extremely polished. Animations are high quality and often pretty substantial. I'm a little curious why it's only estimated at being two hours long. Perhaps if you know exactly what you're doing in advance. Personally, I'm at more than three hours and I doubt I'm halfway done yet.
For $5, I'd say this is a no-brainer. The only negative thing I have to say is that the heavy atmosphere that made the first game so memorable is often absent here, but as an intentional plot point. You're literally at a Halloween party, so the game is a LOT more active and... goofy. Not at all what I'd say has previously defined the series, which may be a bit off-putting. Still though, all the old elements are present, and a real ghost story is coming to the front for me now.
Just in time for Halloween! Grab it!
A fantastic game, graphically rich and brilliantly put together for Halloween. This game was very easy to purchase (and at a great price) and easy to download and install. The game has a great atmosphere, even the first scene makes you jump! A great purchase, highly recommended to adventure enthusiasts and ghost hunters alike.
