Warring States

There are 4 campaings here.
First 1.5 is just too long tutorial, then there is some challenge.
Nothing extraordinary, just playable hex wargame.

- only a few words which explain everything - After releasing - abandoned...
No updates, no balance, no another camapigns, no missions, NOTHING...

Fun game, really like the feel of the troops and the landscape and how they work together. The tactics are smart and useful. I wish there were more levels, but I still got 40 hours out of it. Looking forward to WS2 or some dlc.

I wanted to update this review to say I really really have enjoyed this game. I found the pacing and diversity of tactics to be great for the size and play-space of the game-play. I greatly enjoyed trying to use the units as intended, and investing effort into supporting them into each of their specific roles. While some tactics are better than others depending on the situation, and the user can discover what the best tactics are to maximize their effectiveness, if you step away from that and play out the fullness of the game it is very very fun and enjoyable.

Still hoping for a sequel or dlc drop!

Wow, how much is wrong with this one? After 1 hour just some of the problems I observed. Bow units are WAY overpowered, having way too much range, being way too accurate when firing indirectly and having special abilities that allow them to effectively attack too many units at once. I mean one of my units was BEHIND A BUILDING and was destroyed in 2 turns by indirect bow fire from maximum range. Ouch!! Then I got one of my infantry into melee with an enemy bow unit, and I did acceptable damage, only to watch on the AI's next turn that same bow unit disengage without taking any damage, move back one hex then turn and fire a crippling volley into my unit. Totally inconceivable that a bow unit would be able to disengage from a melee unit(that they are supposed to be vulnerable to) unscathed, then turn and launch an effective attack against that unit.
I think the AI is given way too much of an advantage, AI units would rally almost immediately after being broken, while my units seldom, if ever rallied.
I like hex-based tactical combat games and have played my share, but this one left me less than impressed. Based on this disappointing experience, I can not recommend this one at all.

Great turn based tactical game

• Easy to learn, easy to get into tactical turn based combat.
  
• Bunch of units, each with special moves.
  
• Great art and graphic style.
  
• Fun, smooth and unintrusive animations, that give a lot of flavor to the game with out getting in the way of the action/planing.
  
• Inspired by historical events, but not to heavy on the History class (You might want to play Romance of the 3 Kingdoms for that).

While I appreciate the recent update there are some glaring issues I see with not being able to fire over stonewalls. You can have all the missle weapons available to defend a siege and still can't do anything against overwhelming ground forces outside your walls. That seems like a pretty big flaw to me. Also, for the enemy to be able to see inside your walls without being on top of them seems a little OP. The main part of the game I see the major issue of this is in the final mission. There is no way to defend against enemy missle units without exposing yourself to heavy fire that is guarenteed to destroy even your best units. Maybe if you get spotters on the wall or can blind fire that would be acceptable? Even archers can target troops on the wall with an AOE volley and hit troops behind the wall which is a way to cheat the system.

Overall, I do appreciate the tactics of this game. It could use some more balancing and maybe enhance bonuses for flanking. Some troops just seem impossible to break or kill unless you get your crossbowmen at point blank.

Has enough depth to make it worth thinking about your actual maneuvers and unit choices for attacks, etc, ..

Has the ease of play I was looking for when I wan't a more relaxed gaming session.

I really like the Movement mechanics and substantial range of indirect fire.

I didn't think I would like the art style but I can see why it's OK now... Clear visuals, combat results and animations.

A pleasant game for simple tactical fun.

Hidden gem! Bought this on a whim as it was based on the warring states period (which I like) and I liked how it looked. It took me some time to get used to the mechanics but once I did I found it so satisfying. On the surface I thought it would be a simple turn based tactics game but there was actually quite a bit of depth into it. Can't wait to finish the campaign and challenge my friends to a battle :D

Solid game, challenging AI, beautiful art and music.

Very fun and challenging strategy game especially if you're trying to get an S rank score on missions. Each unit has interesting specials that can make for some really nice combos, sometimes even turning around a losing fight! Nice visuals and music as well. Highly recommend especially if this is the kind of genre you like ;)

I'm generally a COD or Fifa gamer but enjoy the occasional strategy/simulation type game. Thought i'd give Warring States a go and loved it. Easy to get to grips with for a part-time gamer, great game play and an excellent historical element.

Not recommended at full price, that is. For $10, you get a pretty decent tactical game, like so many others. It's still EA, but been so long we can longer use that as an excuse. I have finished the four mission campaign, and it was okay. So there's skirmish, and the AI is acceptable. They have also added more maps.

So again, on sale it is worth looking at. It will certainly not teach you ancient Chinese military tactics. These are fairly generic. You gain points as you fight to use special attacks, but it is not a big thing. Would be nice if they used this as a tactical module for Oriental Empires, which has a different problem. No tactical control at all, as of this writing.

Only updates for the last four months were update 19 "In Game Guide" and update 20 "Multiplayer Maps" ... Seriously?

Absolutly no DEV progress and btw. the AI is dumb like hell, so best stay away from the game until release+reviews, if there will ever be one ...

Stay away. Great start. No follow through. It leaves you feeling like Dynasty Warriors. It nails some things and utterly whiffs others. The sad part is this could have been a great game. It has the spine, just no muscles or blood. If you don't like this review, take a number to eat me.

P.S. The Designers routinely lie to the poor saps that have already purchased this. There is no update in the future. Learn to live with this.

The combat is pretty fun. Your units have various special attacks and moves that are very cool. There are flanking bonuses, advantages and disadvantages to units attacking different types of units. One thing that I don't like is that archers get NO defense when being attacked in melee. They just sit there and take damage, while dealing zero damage back. They should be able to at least attack back a little bit. This is kind of silly and needs to be adjusted.

The few campaign scenarios that I have played so far have been interesting and offer different types of challenges, which is a good thing. I look forward to playing the rest of the missions.

The developers, however, are glacially slow, and they are absent from the forums for extended periods of time. Lately, they rarely, if at all, respond to questions on their own game's Steam discussion board.

So, the combat is solid, and enjoyable. It still needs quite a bit of play balancing. The AI is not very difficult to beat (so far). Multiplayer doesn't seem to work at all. I hosted a game, and my Steam friend never saw it in the game list, nor could I invite him to join my game. So, that seems broken right now, and the developers aren't responding when we ask them how to get multiplayer working.

I hope the developers pick up the pace and finish the game soon. It has a lot of potential, but it's currently hindered by play balance issues, multiplayer not working, and non-responsive developers. So, I cautiously recommend this game.

[Update 2/23/2017] - I am changing my review to "Definitely Not Recommended". These developers have completely disappeared, leaving this game unfinished. They no longer respond on the Steam forum.

Please stay far away from this game. I feel bad for ever recommending this game. Developers like these guys are what gives early access a bad rap.

[Update 1/29/2018] They did it! They really did it. The game is released as final. So, I have changed my review back to positive. Now, I will play the game and see what's new. The game was always a solid turn-based tactical wargame. I was just upset at the lack of progress and no communication by the developers. I will write one more update once I have a chance to play the game for a while. But, negative review removed, and back to positive.

Played the 1st campaign. Ok game, AI is lacking but that is in most games. Graphics are fine, story is ok too. Not to bad a game, especially for $10

I actually like this game, it has potential. it lacks the deeply subtle depths of a tru tactical game so far, but I have to say that the work done to this date is fine.
I couild expand on this game easily; if you ever played dynasty tactics, you will remember most of the characters in this game, I just wish that the strategic elements were as deeply rewarding as dynasty tactics.

A very good stratergy game that based on ancient China, with match theme of graphics and musics.

Since this is the Alpha stage of the development, believe it will grow into a better game.

Here are one of my suggestion and what are lacking in this game:
-Terrain Status Descriptions: There are a lot building like town and windmill or valley, but non of them are described how it affect my units damage, pretty sure it not only decorations. Suggested that put better description on the terrain upon u mouse over the terrains.

10 / 10 Artwork. The is absolutely beautiful.

10 / 10 Soundtrack. Amazing. Although it's extremely relaxing. You might not want to try to play this one during an all-nighter :P

10 / 10 Gameplay. It's deceptively simple. Can you keep your simple more complex than your opponents simple? That will be the deciding factor.

This game promises nothing that it does not deliver. The price point is perfect.

I've owned the game for while now (admittedly I've been distracted by other shiny things recently), but I've noticed that the dev's deliver updates every week like clockwork. The few questions and concerns that I voiced on the forums were damn near instantly answered and alleviated by a developer's response. Who would have guessed - They actually care!

If you are a fan of strategy in any way, I think you'll find something to enjoy about Warring States.

This game has a very good hex type combat system. Right now its kinda short just a few scenrios and they are not customizable. I think if they added a bit more complexity to it i.e. a small economy to add more options in battle. Or customizable maps. Right now its a great battle game. I paid 10.99 and its well worth it and if more content were added the value would go up quickly.still some bugs but the devolopers seem to be on the updates so give it a try.

I was one of those that greenlight this game. I'm a fan of turn-based strategy and this game is no exception. I bought it the first day that he was out on steam and I can tell you that for now the game, even if he isn't complete, Is great. The game is easy to play but difficult to master. For now, there isn't a tutorial included and no multiplayer (But the creator said that he will implement many feature before the full release of the game) So yeah, for now, the game look a bit like a demo, but I can guarantie that he will soon, very soon, look like a real game.

For the creator: for a first game, this game is amazing. Keep up the good work!

Very lovely style, music, geat tactics in use, easy to grasp and reminicent of games with the Bei and Zhang crew royally at each others throats while captaining such sweet little armies around the charming maps. Had very much fun, looking forward to playing this one.

Only played for an hour, so this is a very early view...

So far its all pretty great, supprised how complete it "feels", the controls are all working as you expect, this is great as you can jump straight into the tactics... So far the tactic have been really good, you need to think carefully about what you are going to do else you do fail (I have failed twice on the first stage) and this is how a game like this should be...

Graphics are really nice and fit the period and the music is really excellent, not to much of it, but again like the graphics really fits all in...

So I would have to say so far its a double thumbs up!!!

Great price also, getting a lot here for you money, when did good games become so cheap??
