3 Stars is a pretty typical RPG Maker game. It's what you'd except from a fantasy game like this, through and through. Not a bad time.
This is one of the early Aldorlea 'Laxius' games. It's probably a bit dated now but it still has a great storyline and lots of little surprises to discover. It's a great game and I definitely recommend it.
This is one MASTERPIECE. Here are a few pointers:
- Yes, this is a prequel to Laxius Power series, the story behind LP1, which unfortunately is not available here on steam. The fact that you get to play this in 2022, let`s you in on how amazing the storytelling of this series is.
- The battles are constant as f..., but you can handle it if you are not blind-punching everything (though, it may come to a point where you actually can blind your way through randoms). Bosses, mini-bosses and optional battles are not to be triffled with. In the LP series, any optional battles are WAY worst than your normal storyline bosses and minibosses.
- We have depth in character and they may seem volatile but that`s because they are dealing with a godly-chaotic plot that wasn`t expected.
- Last but not least, achievements are storywise and some may be super hard to get, but the game will grow into you eventually!
My advice: Hunt down a way to play all the Laxius Power series after this, and before Fortress of Hell. YOU WONT REGRET IT.
Truly, a solid product. The story is not the best, however the atmosphere the story is in is very enthralling. The first half has such an adventure feel to it, the fact that it's a huge world and you're just exploring and exploring trying to reach your goal. Second part is bonkers.
The gameplay is also cute, with the friendship system, total of 10 party members is also very manageable while allowing for different combinations. Just solidly good all the way through, if you are a fan of RPG Maker games definitely a buy I'd say.
Short version rewiev:
+ Long playtime
+ All achievements obtainable
- Getting some achievements is riculously hard
- Battles not very balanced
- High price
- Story not very enjoyable and is not really presequel of Laxius Power series
Long version review:
Story
First of all i will say, that i actually like how story goes, how locations are changed and overall script, problem is with interpretation. Main character is pictured as selfish, arogant bastard (said politely), but at some point he suddenly changes to good hero everyone loves and villing to follow him to hell. To give autors credit, there are parts of some diallogues, that are trying to soften this change, but it is still too suden, and has no impact on characters behaviour, this could work if you are skipping story, but i did not. And this makes first problem, because it is hard to play game where you hate main character.
Battles
Good thing about encounters is that you can change encounter rate at the begging of game. Problem is that some locations are stupidly big, so if you trying to go from point A to B you will face a lot of enemies, not to mention that it is not hard to get lost at some point. As for battles, combat system is fine, but there are three serious problems: first is unlimited counter, several bosses have it and if you happen to have item with counter, your character will literally kill himself, trying to constantly autoattack boss. Second problem is with damage, simply said some common enemies, will just decide to ik your characters, on hardest difficulty it is stupid, but acceptable, but it is same on easiest, only difference is that you sometimes survive it. Last problem is with hp of enemies, on hardest difficulty enemies got stupidly too much hp, but you are unable to increase your damage to match it, in other words you will get lots of battles, where enemies do not much to your party and you will also need lots of rounds to manage to kill enemies. That is not hard it is boring.
Achievements
Best for last, achievements overall are working so why complain? Well, 80% of achievements are absolutely fine, but we have timed achievements and secrets. For secrets it is pretty straightforward, find all secrets. Easy if you know where they are, because on most of them you got no indication, so basically if you want to get all, you have to jump into every wall in game, but that would not be a problem, problem is that if you miss them on some places you cant return, and have to start new game for them. Timed achievements got similar problem, because you need to complete game in 25hours, that is doable with guide, without it, it tooked me about 30hours on hardest and with guide it took about 13h on easiest with all secrets. But it is not the end of it, main problem are two particular achievements: go thru 3000 battles and spend 80+ hours in game. Time in game is bit off because it is time on one savefile, so after completing every quest in game, visiting every area that tooks lets say about 40hours, you need to afk for another 40hours, but what will you do in that time? That is why you have battles achievements because i had about 1500 battles after finishing everything, so i really spent all that time simply grinding battles and afking... very enjoyable.
So to conclude it, if you are not achievement hunter, buy game on sale and enjoy it, it is not worse game i ever played and have some features i actually liked. On the other hand if you are achievement hunter stay far away from this. But if you really willing to play, get some guide and go with hardest difficulty, you should be able to complete in one playthrough, but be prepared for serious test of determination and patience.
played this game off and on for several years, its really fun if youre into this type of rpg, Aldorea games is one of my favorite companies to play rpgs from and i highly recommend them in general. all of their works have good storylines and good features to help newer players, leasire players, and experienced hardcore loving players.
The primary goal of the game is to get two of the characters to a distant school where the teens have been granted scholarship. Along the way, they bicker, make bad decisions, rescue lost pets, and explore wild terrains and dangerous dungeons. At one point a cutscene interjects itself and we learn about some bad guy who wants to leave the "outer world" and is willing to do whatever it takes, including murder. The final showdown between the teens and the villain is arrived at through pure happenstance. I won't go in to details to avoid spoilers, but suffice it to say that the game is linear and the player and characters are forced along a path by a puppetmaster. Most games with in-depth narratives can be argued to be the same way, but 3 Stars of Destiny is amateur hour in this respect. Don't expect a quality narrative here folks.
The dialogue between the two main characters is childish. The author of this game tried to develop a love story where a relationship forms as the characters mature, but did not succeed. I couldn't tell if the issue was due to a poor translation, or just adolescent drivel. If you hate typos, poor grammar, and middle school level writing, this game will frustrate you.
The maps were varied and well designed. At first, I didn't like the idea of hunting for items on the map itself, but it grew on me. Towards the end of the game, the designer got lazy and started laying out walking paths over tiles that most players would assume to be barriers, like cliff edges. I liked the idea of secret treasure caches hidden throughout the world, but they could have been integrated in to the world better instead of appearing to be isolated pocket dimensions. In the final dungeon, one of the hidden rooms contained the architect of the labyrinth -- that was a nice touch. There should have been more of that kind of thing.
The music was OK. There weren't any tunes that were particularly memorable. The music played in the first town was annoying.
There are missable achievements due to the fact that some areas can only be visited once. This is a terrible sin in game design and I hope that the author will avoid this issue in future games. Backtracking is allowed, and required for sidequests in most cases. Speaking of which, a fast travel system would have been great. By the end of the game I was so tired of having to travel for 15-20 minutes for some quests that I simply refused to complete them.
I learned that this game is a prequel for the Laxius Power series, which could have been awesome if not for the GIGANTIC COP-OUT at the end of the game. All of the characters have their memory wiped. What a way to say fuck you to the players after investing 16+ hours.
I do not recommend buying and playing this game. The author of the game should probably hire a pro to write the stories and dialogue of his future games and stick to the design parts of the projects instead.
The protagonist is called Random. And this is not part of a joke.
Ok, with that out of the way, lets go to the pros and cons:
Pros:
- Maps decently made.
- ok Combat , characters have elements, you can upgrade them via itens, etc
- there are many secret rooms
- the reptile is quite funny
Cons:
- main character is one of the most despicable people I ever saw. Coudn't stand it.
- story as it is presented is a mess. Stuff happens and you stay like "wtf ????"
- zero worldbuilding
- maps often have no sense
- there is a LOT of backtracking, bad backtracking. Enough to get you bored and mad. Example: you go to the city, then they tell you to go to our hut, when you get there, theres one dialogue and characters decide to go to the city again. No fast travel. No development in the way to the city, no challenges... Just waste of time.
The game has glimpses of a good game. But is plagued with horrible writing and main character.
Nice rpgmaker game with juvenile humor that does justice to the genre it emulates. Features like friendship system, different rewards from quests/chests/npcs with certain items equipped, secret rooms and so on make it interesting to explore.
3 Stars of Destiny is, all in all, a good game.
The game serves as a prequel to Laxius Power (freeware RPG games) and Laxius Force (check aldorlea for more info). This may or may not make the experience better for you, although I played this game before any of the others, and I loved it, so it's whatever.
The game is a pretty standard fantasy game. The story is okay, honestly even though I absolutely adore the game, the story isn't insane. It wasn't meant to be insane either. This game was meant to be about how the main characters meet up, and that's what the game showed off and did well.
The battle system is standard, but it adds some unique touches. Random and his friends interact with each other and learn skills and buffs if they fight together long enough. This adds a new depth to the battles as using the same characters together gives you nice, non-dominant, bonuses.
There are 52 secret rooms to find (yes, the game says 51, trust me, I found 52) and plenty of relics and artifacts in the game. The difference is ... pretty irrelevant except for some details. This adds up to a very "every corner contains a secret" type of game, and you won't find everything on your own, most likely. This is honestly not an issue unless you're a 100% kind of person, in which case it might bother you. If you truly care, the tips are: Explore every tree, pillar, wall, hole, gap, dead end, and every secret room you see. Yes, also check inside secret rooms. You never know. There is ALMOST always something that indicates the room, however some are definitely harder to find than others. Free tip: There's about 9 before you leave the first town "permanently".
The real victory of this game is the maps, though. Indinera is known for making great maps, and this game is no exception. Some of them are long, which you can like or not like, and one of them is pretty damn hard to navigate through. Use your brain, it's what it's for. Technically speaking you can find your way through each dungeon by simply going to every screen transfer and backtracking until you find the story-relevant one, getting 'lost' because of secret switches or such is not possible for the most part. There isn't a single irrelevant map in this game though, take that as you will.
All in all, the game is a bit of an acquired taste, I won't deny that. The dynamic between Random and Sarah is a bit forced (even if you know the context of the game) but it ends up paying off given its goal is to explain future games. All in all this prequel is a very good game in its own right, but some might only enjoy it if they already know the game, and others might not enjoy the 'use your head' gameplay the game has at all.
I personally rate the game 8.5/10.
finally finished this game after a long time -- i think i started it years ago, but the save file stayed around every few months i might play it a bit more, do a dungeon, then neglect it. but finally after a few years i finished it. i didn't finish all the quests, or find all the hidden locations, but i beat the main quest and saw the credits, so i figure i'd write a review.
i've been a jrpg fan since dragon quest 1 and final fantasy 1 on the NES, so keep that context in mind -- if you aren't, you obviously might not like the game. but i felt it was pretty good as rpgmaker games go; quite long, lots of exploration, tons of secrets.
on the negative side, the story wasn't that interesting -- at least, not until late game, then it got somewhat more intriguing, but it was never a story that kept me on the edge of my seat, and i never really cared about the characters or plot or setting. but it did have some interesting npcs, the occasional bit of clever dialogue, or an interesting puzzle or dungeon here and there.
also, the main character in particular was annoying, he was constantly insulting abusing the second main character for no good reason, often when she hadn't said anything he just felt the need to throw in a random (pun, his name is "random") insult her way. his entire personality can be summed up by 'randomly insults his allies, and brags incessantly' or even 'donald trump: the jrpg protagonist'. on a scale of likeability of heroes of protagonists, with tidus from final fantasy being a 1/10 and, say, fei fong wong from xenogears or being a 10/10, random is like a -10/10, he's that bad, and it often detracts from the game to have a main character who you hate to play as.
the other characters are not as bad, but they are often forgettable, and their personalities are often 'jokey sidekick iguana', 'copy of rena from star ocean 2', 'guy with a moustache and big muscles', and other stereotypes and stereotype variations.
also, as a game developer myself, there's a lot to learn from this game in terms of clever quests, interesting dungeon design, and hidden secrets everywhere. it's well-crafted in terms of exploration gameplay, generally. the only thing i can complain about there is no easy way to teleport to where you've been to in the past until the end of the game, which is an issue even dragon warrior 3 solved 30 years ago with its wing of the wyvern mechanic.
the combat is a mixed bag. it's fun, and generally balanced, but there is a lack of description of what each stat does, or what each status ailment does. maybe it's in the manual? but i didn't read the manual, if it has one, and the game itself has no in-game explanation of its mechanics, so often i had to guess. but that isn't uncommon in older jrpgs, so i don't really hold it against it.
overall... if you are looking for a relatively long jrpg with lots of stuff to do, and if, like me, you have already played through all major jrpgs that often appear on 'top 100 jrpg' lists, and are tired of replaying them, you might want to try something new, and there's a wealth of 'new' in rpgmaker-land.
This game is fun. While an RPGMaker game, 3 Stars is a wonderful little thing, and as it was produced by Aldorlea, it is in good hands. The game is rich, the combat thrilling, and the story epic. Gameplay is standard for the genre, but has a few twists and turns.
I love Aldorlea games. But this one is one of their early creations, and it is terrible. The dungeon complexity is astounishing, the mob difficulty is ridiculous, and the button mashing puzzles are frustrating. Do not recommend this game, unless it is on sale so you can buy the guide to avoid many of the aforementioned troubles.
I wanted to like this game. I REALLY did. but 20 minutes in and I was completely disappointed not just with the experience the game was trying to provide, but with EVERYTHING. Starting off with one of the minor characters saying "(dies)", moving on to the main character being named "Random" (Seriously? "Random"? Naming your dog "Fluffy" is more creative) to even the bullshit with the inns. The items are expensive enough already, but then to have the inns charge half of your current amount just makes the problem so much worse.
The story was bull, Random's motivation for looking for the elf chick right at the start comes off as stupid at best and xenophobic asshole-ry at worst. Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but that's how it came off to me, personally. Add in a VERY generic and boring story, a just as weak battle-system exacerbated by very VERY low money drops, and I quit 20 minutes in.
The absolute worst thing you can do in a game is make somebody so bored that they not only ask "When does this get fun?" but bore them into quitting and swearing never to play the game again. I'm not kidding when I say that I don't even want to get the cards for this game, because it would mean having to keep it going for over two hours. And really, that's two hours I could spend playing just about any other game I own and having a better time. Approach with high caution if you wish, but prepare yourself for a lot of disappointment. I came into this game with low expectations, and this game failed to meet even THAT high.
This is one of my favourite rpg games ever. I know it is considered a stand alone game, but after I play this game I often play the Laxius Power and Laxius Force games.
The artwork is beautiful, the script and story are entertaining, and I love all the sidequests. I also enjoy trying to get all of the steam achievements.
I truly hope that Aldorlea puts the Laxius Force games on steam soon.
i have no idea if the rest of the game is good, but it does not mater, even in the beginning area there is so much missable and random bs that you would have to buy their guide to know about or be completely screwed over, oh hey the weapon shop sells these badass elemental swords, i better go save up some money and come back and buy them at 900 gold apeice, hey where are the swords? i have the money now... nope guess what the guy only offers it once, EVER guess you should have already grinded that gold scorpion for 35 gold a battle for 8 hours before you talked to me and randomly triggered this event, your screwed now,
do not support this game or any other game by this developer. they clearly do not know what they are doing.
It's pretty hard to find words for this game..
I am playing on normal with normal enemy counter.
For the first hours I was running from one point to another .. and back again. And what for? To have a 1 minute talk with a party member where we decide to go back to the place we just came from. Fact is you have to run around excessively most of the time. An on top of that - even with normal enemy counter you get so many fights, it starts bugging you more and more.
It's definitely what it sounds like. Boring and awfully tedious.
You don't have much money to buy stuff and if you want to heal yourself at a bunny safepoint (which can be pretty useful), it costs you half your money. Every. Damn. Time. Just why? Good point is: there is much stuff lying on the floor waiting to get picked up.
While running around, it just doesn't feel like there is any (good) story behind that's worth playing. I'm missing something here. I couldn't find any depth and the first hours seem to be a long introduction to blunt characters.
Running around with stupid reasons and not-so-good dialogues would be half as bad if there was any good mapping. Most of the plants and stones on the ground are just there to block you. You can't cross them and have to run all around it to get somewhere. And that's another point where you get annoyed by this horrendous amount of fights.
Also there doesn't seem to be a good balancing, I am overpowered right from the start and I quickly found a secret room with an op weapon. So I am twice op and those damn things would die even faster. If they wouldn't die after one hit anyway.
What I hate most? Sometimes you have a choice what you want to do. If you say no you can't change your mind and have to reload an old safe game. If you say yes, you can't leave the dungeon until it's done. If you do (because you need potions and can't kill that overdone boss e.g.), you automatically abandon your quest and can't proceed. There goes your (possible) reward. Bye-bye!
I'll give it a try to see if it gets any better. I get my hopes up.
Overall I liked 3 Stars of Destiny. It is an oldschool style rpg with a mix of interesting characters and some humor. The combat system is solid, it has good level design, lots of secrets, challenges, and achievements. With that being said, if you do not like snes style rpgs, there's probably not much I can do to convince you to like it. You either like this style of game, or you hate it. Nothing I'm typing here will change your mind if you hate RPG maker games. Please do note that unlike most reviews, I have actually completed the game. I would say it takes a good 25-30 hours on regular difficulty. On to the details...
The characters are unique without spoiling anything. There are some interesting ones and later in the game you get to split up the party into 3 groups so choices do matter. There's often funny banter between characters. Gameplay is pretty standard for an RPG. You will need to grind a bit to get some levels, but combat is pretty fun. Money will be in short supply until late in the game, so grinding isn't too bad or painful. There are also achievements and optional fights that are quite challenging. The dungeons, both indoor and outdoor are pretty massive. There are TONS of secrets and a lot of achievements and the game has replayability if you're inclined. You can try a speedrun, beat it on hard mode, find all hidden areas, etc. Also, if you do decide to get the game, without being a spoiler, be sure to check out the swamp area fully. There is a missable character and dungeon if just blast through it hastily!
The one negative point I would mention about 3 stars is the plot. I will admit the plot is weak and somewhat illogical at times. I would say that the later levels feel almost surrealist in nature as far as the theme of different level areas. If Salvador Dali created an RPG maker game, this might come close to it! Due to this, I would say that I really prefer Aldorlea's other massive RPG, the Book of Legends, over 3 stars. TBoL has a more cohesive plot and a ton of characters so I would recommend you try that one first.
So what makes 3 stars worth it if the plot isn't that spectacular? The gameplay and characters are both good and it's a very solid game overall. Interaction between the characters is pretty funny at times and that keeps things interesting. Great dungeons, fun combat, some tough optional bosses give it the core of a good RPG. Add in lots of replayability and steam achievements and trading cards and it's a good buy. If you like Aldorlea RPGs, it's solid and a lot of fun. If you're on the fence about this one, I'd say try The Book of Legends first for a more cohesive plot. You can also download a playable demo of both games from Aldorlea's site that will let you play the full game for an hour, just to get an idea of the characters and style. Hope this helps!
I have played through the game and beaten it twice and enjoyed every moment of it. I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for something fun and simple to play, while still having enough of a challenge to be interesting. I found the characters charming and the interactions to be amusing and while the story wasn't amazing, it wasn't boring either.
Pros:
+Nice selection of party members with different skillsets to appeal to any sort of playstyle.
+Really lovely artwork in the battles
+Character interactions are amusing and charming and you definitely can see some growth in the main characters as the quest progresses
+Multiple difficulty modes with choices on encounter rates to please everyone. Also the Rush selection can be great to quickly get through easier battles. Enough challenge to make battles fun but not so much that one feels a need to grind.
+Lots of optional sidequests and hidden things to find.
+Love the friendship dynamic and how having certain people together in a party for a length of time can grant bonuses in battles and give you preemptive attacks.
Cons:
-A bit on the short side, story is about 20 hours of play
-A couple of broken achievements (though dev has been responsive via email about it) Edit: As of 4/24/2015 the game no longer has broken achievements.
-Some of the side characters feel tacked on and get little part in the overall story.
Overall, I'd recommend this game to anyone who loves old school styled RPGs and enjoys the RPG Maker style of graphics. Personally, I adore the style of RPG Maker's graphics and do not consider that a fault. The game tells a nice simple story of some fun characters and I had a blast playing it and look forward to playing some more of the dev's other games.
I loved playing this game it has a active story feeling to it as well it can be funny and challenging. The color scheme feels stable. The action is fun and satisfying. I also love finding the secrets. It really gives off thaat good old adventure feeling when playing.
