I definitely do NOT recommend this game for the price it is offered normally (15 euro?!), because for this price you can get so much more polished games nowadays. But if you see it on a 80-90% discount or as a part of such a discounted bundle, then sure. But seriously, if you haven't yet, go instead for the other title - My Riding Stables: Life with Horses - because there they got rid off most of the issues I see in this game.
The graphics are nostalgic 2000's, you control your character from above by clicking (except for when out on a ride. There are three different modes of game, each concentrating in a little bit different career direction - you can be an instructor, general stable manager or focus more on your own riding. You earn money by having guests, teaching at a riding school etc. The premise is pretty neat.
However, the main issue is time. There's a clock slowly running every day, guests coming, shows happening, it all happens at certain times of the day. But quite often you find yourself having nothing to do, just waiting until the time comes. You can't speed up the clock.
Another problem is how enormous your estate is. It would be lovely in reality, but in game it means facilities are all super far from each other. Therefore you spend a lot of your time just running between them. For example, it's a really long way to go from stables to the place where you can free ride, which makes me not really want to go there very often. In other words, it gets boring. The overall pacing is a little too slow, even for a chill game.
Also, some of the controls are a bit clunky, and that affects the overall experience too.
I enjoyed the fact that were three different ways to play this game. It kept it interesting
The horse game that i have owned for years , yet now all of a sudden apparently , I Cant save my game play anymore or even get past beginner stage, wont let me build guest house, i am fuming, waste of money now and time trying to fix this myself nothing works , verifying integrity , re-installing , NOTHING WORKS! DEVELOPERS NEED TO FIX THIS ASAP.
Actually garbage. Do not touch this unless you are just looking to cringe on a horse game
This is a very nostalgic game for me, as I played it when I was about 5. On an old, green, square computer down in the basement (whenever my parents weren't using it for emails), it was always nice to insert the disc, knowing full well that I intended to mostly run around on a horse to try getting myself stuck in walls. That was back in the day where I'd happily wait 5 minutes on a loading screen. It was janky then, and it is janky now. That's what I love about it. :3
Riding off the map and into the void to grind stats, getting horses stuck on top of other horses, awkward and strange voice lines, jumping over weird world boundaries, poor tutorial, purposefully getting horses sick, all of it is just how I remember it. If you don't like buggy, old games, then I guess I can't and shouldn't recommend it for you. It's been over 15 years, and I'm biased. :/
This game is not worth your attention and money. There are a lot of other horse games which are much better.
Graphics wise. But also the game play.
This game will not give you some tutorials on how to do things. Like brushing, training, giving lessons, setting up an tournament... To name a few.
This game has potential if you ask me. But it is not executed well.
Simple horse game with little instructions needed. Loved it when I was younger and still do now. When I want to play a game and shut my mind down for a moment
Horrible graphics, horrible storyline and controls..heck Petz: Horzes 2 a 2008 game is better than this!
This perspective is from someone who played the GBA version of this a loooooooong time ago. Someone who was a pseudo-horse freak, because I never had any real horse of my own. I was addicted to this game because I loved horses and I loved the idea of managing a stable full of horses and even breeding foals.
Lo and behold, about 15 or so years later, I find out there is a 3D PC version. After years of wondering why Paws and Claws Pet Vet horses and textures are so similar (also made by the same company, RadonLabs, duh) and why there wasn't (seemingly) a horsey game counterpart...I found it!
That being said, I have some points to go through.
Who do you recommend this game to, and why? I would recommend this game to those who never had a horse of their own, either because they can't afford or just don't have the time and resources for one. I recommend this game to kiddos who want to learn about horses and business-related things (management, money spending, buying and selling, keeping stock of feed or medicine for animals, etc.). While it's not a through and through representation of what really goes on, I feel that it is educational enough to help someone younger grasp and understand.
How do you feel about the graphics, compared to other games/horse games? Firstly, my 5 year old self's socks would have been knocked cleanly off. I wouldn't have fully understood how to play the game, but I would've enjoyed riding around and caring for my horses IMMENSELY. I find these horses, and the other graphics, charming. Are they good textures? Mediocre; this was from a time of games where they took pictures of real things and slapped them on a 3D model. They do this now, but because they've had enough practice with it. The graphics are great for it's time and genre, in my opinion. They are a whole lot better than the present installments.
I could play this game for hours, just to finish it and come back to it for nostalgia's sake. Does it get boring? Of course, because I'm not the child I once was, who easily could max out her days riding the horses everywhere. Do I wish I could have played this as a child? You bet! Though, I do have fond memories of the GBA version.
Compared to the GBA version, how is this different? Well, for starters there is no "Free Ride" or "Ride Out" on the menu screen. You have a choice between three professions. I haven't finished the game/"main storyline" yet, so I can't provide more similarities and differences.
Overall, I give this game a 8.5/10. It's a product of it's time, but enough added charm to the very unique niche that it's in.
I can't say too much, as this looks like an older game re-released on Steam many years later, but even taking that into consideration, this game is lacking. Let's do my usual list -
Pros:
- Like the inclusion of horse breeding.
- I like the fact you have three different "play modes", if you will. But I don't think they're any different from each other! (I simply wasn't intrigued enough to play them all - I just finished all the tasks in "stable manager/horse breeder" (whatever it is called...) mode.)
- The game has a set of tasks that the player can follow to progress.
- This game can be ran on a Windows 10 system with seemingly no fuss.
- Gameplay is simple and well signposted - simple enough for kids to pick up.
- When you hover over a part of the horse whilst grooming, a little label comes up with the body part. Good for teaching kids basic equine anatomy!
- I'm by no means an expert, but the horse's gaits seem okay to me. The animation looks fluid.
Cons:
- My biggest complaint is the inexplicable, unexplained lagging* whenever there are characters on screen. It's AWFUL. All inputs are severely delayed by the lagging. Want to jump without knocking the bars on an obstacle down? No such luck here, if you're facing towards the farm! Whenever there isn't NPCs on screen, it runs absolutely fine!
*(And no, before anyone moans "it's just your PC!", I don't have a super fancy gaming PC, but my laptop should be able to run this just fine. Maybe it's down to system incompatibilities, since this game is almost certainly pre-Windows 10. I am not technically-minded enough to know why the lag is so severe, but it is. It's horrendous!
- Oh my goodness, the models. Star Stable who? (sarcasm) I know this is an older game, but the horse models are just something else. Not the worst I've seen, but they're bad. Why are the faces so flat? The NPC models are even worse - they're enough to scare a small child.
- Time either moves far too fast or too slowly. Again, this is affected by the lag from NPCs on screen.
- Whatever you do, do not click on an NPC more than once! Their dialogue can glitch out and you'll hear your character and the NPC greeting each other on loop for about 2 minutes. It's funny the first time, but not so much when it keeps happening.
- The horse's gallop is ridiculous. You go from a nice steady canter to becoming an actual rocket. I know horses are fast, but they aren't "rocket" fast.
In conclusion... a nice, cheap game for young kids? Sure. But no more than that.
(Please ignore the 20 hour playtime I accrued. This was for, ahem, thorough testing.)
The game brings several nice ideas to the table.
However, I keep failing the jumping for super mini mistakes. The horse does not jump at all if the jump is not executed 10000% overcorrectly. Why have penalties with falling poles then? Why do I have nice and pretty outdoor jumps, if I cannot jump them 99,999% of the time? In all other horse games I played (lots and lots of them) I jumped rather well up to really good. In a Let's Play the jumping did not seem so difficult. Also, my horse keeps getting better abilities, but still jumps really badly.
And: I barely complete the advanced riding lessons, because I keep getting mistakes althoug i make no mistake at all (touching all the arrows, even in galopp, in the given order).
So maybe these 2 things are just bugs, but they completely ruin the game for two of three careers, and limit quick money making of the breeder to selling horses. Such a shame, this could have been so good!
I didn't dislike this game. However, I do feel that it has become completely obsolete in the world of horse games today. Unless you're purchasing it as part of the familyplay bundle, then I don't recommend purchasing it at all.
Pros:
Replayability: There are three different careers in the game and they absolutely control how you play
Stable Size: You can own up to 8 different horses at a time
Challenge - The competitions do require practice
Length - It took me about 16 hours to play through all three career paths, and I certainly could've kept building my stable afterwords
Cons:
Can't speed up time - You will want to
Breeding - You can breed the horses, but I never got it to work
Income - Since you can't be all three professions at once, there are limited opportunities to make money
i cant even play the game...
ok so i just got the game a week ago and as soon as i got in the game i went into the settings to see if i could change around some stuff, like i normaly do, but when i went to change the size of the screen and i reloached the game it chashes. so instead of telling me that the game can't be in that screen size or not even haveing it as an option it is now broken.
i even tyed to uninstall and redownload it and it just has the same thing...
if anyone could atualy help with this problem that would be great.
First of all, complaining about graphics doesn't seem like something relative. You see from the screenshots how the graphic is. Also keep in mind that this game is from like 2007, not 2014. It's not a modern game. It's an old game.
The one big downside of this game is the lack of tutorials. You don't get explained things and have to figure things out on your own. But it could be fine if you enjoy figuring things out by yourself. I managed to do it. Now I know how to better all stats.
The music is pretty much the same the whole time, and sometimes I find it irritating that there's no speed up button or such. Also there's just the three choices in the beginning and you have to complete tasks to unlock the different riding paths. And it can be a drag having to run back and forth everywhere, tho at least you can run.
Other than that I think this game is pretty good. I had it when I was a kid and I loved playing it. So I had to get it now because nostalgia. It's entertaining for some time and pretty easy once you learn how it all works. If you enjoy horse games I would definitely recommend this.
The only thing I really wish for in this game is to be able to upgrade the foaling stable and breed at least two couple of horses at a time. For example you could breed your own mare in one stall and use the other one for horse breeders that comes and want to use your stallion.
I played this game a lot when i was a kid. Didnt know that it was on steam so when i saw it i bought it. Obviously the graphics/gameplay is nothing like how games are made now, but still it is a decent game. I could play hours and hours on it. Id recommend this game for little horse lovers who really want to play a goal to goal game (you can take as long as you want achieving the goals though!)
I wanted to like this game, but simply could not get into it. What put me off was the animations of the horse and rider, when riding. To me, they were horrid to watch, and put me off playing the game. It did not help that the controls felt a bit clunky, and it felt really bland, and lifeless when playing the game. As a player of Equestrian games, I have to say that I cannot recommend this game to others who enjoy playing horse games. I know I have only played ten minutes of it, but I cannot stress this enough... I simply could not get over the bad rider/horse animations, and the clunky gameplay that came with it.
I actually really love his game. I played this as a child, as many others disagree with the quality of the game, I am very happy with it. The game is way too dope to be hated on as such.
Graphics: If you didn't like the graphics, then why buy it? You can tell it has lower graphics and is an old game. Honestly you're incredibly stupid if you wrote a bad review over the graphics.
I must disclose that i played this game many years ago, so it has some youthsentiment for me. In this game you take care for you horses and try so establish a career. It is quite repetitive, but it has, for its time, quite good graphics. It is and feels like an old game.
Pro's:
+ One of the better horse games on steam
+ Tons of youth sentiment
+ good grapics and animations for its age
Con's:
- No tutorial
- Some bugs and glitches in the gameplay
- quite repetitive
- Very looped music
I've seen lots of bad reviews on here, but honestly I love this game. You have so much control, and it really is fun.
Even though I'm a big fan of mindless, casual games and of anything equestian-related, I'm forced to admit that this is a terrible game. Even pony-mad kids are liable to find this unbearably dull if played for longer than five minutes.
Graphics: Awful. Straight out of the mid-1990s.
Gameplay: Now I'm a reasonably intelligent adult but the lack of guidance as to how to play this god-forsaken excuse of a game is insane. There is no information on how to improve the horses skills, health, cleanliness, etc. There are a handful of tasks to complete, but nothing useful in the way of a tutorial. Is there even a help guide? If so, I couldn't find one.
Entertainment Value: Okay, so the show element is vaguely entertaining, but for every 60 seconds of competition I can guarantee you another 10 minutes of walking. Yes. WALKING: endless leading of your horse back and forth from the paddock and stables will sap your will to live. Oh, and then there's the grooming. Horse cleanliness seems to plummet regardless of how long one spends on the utterly tedious process of waggling a brush around. No indication is given of how long is long enough, or if progress is being made. Literally hours of your game day will be spent on this task... and largely in vain.
In Summary: Run. Run away as fast as you can and take your money with you.
