What makes Zoom Player the best overall media player? It's the user interface, viewing experience and tweaking options. Lots and lots of tweaking options, tailoring the playback experience to your personal preferences without bloating up or slowing down.
Under the hood, Zoom Player uses the best audio/video decoding and rendering technologies available to get the job done. Whether it's Microsoft DirectShow framework, the FFMPEG project, LAV Filters, libVLC or the Chromium browser, Zoom Player uses the best playback engine for the task. The flexibility of picking the right media engine for the task means that pretty much every media format can play at the highest quality your hardware can muster. And if it doesn't, I will do my best to resolve any issues in the discussions area.
What about Control? If you're scared by long lists, skip to the next paragraph, otherwise know that Zoom Player can be controlled with a Remote Control app; a physical Remote Control; an XBOX controller; a mouse; the keyboard; using a PowerShell Script; Home Automation apps; over TCP/IP; WinAPI; through the Command line; and even with a web browser. Sorry for the long list, but the level of control and attention to detail I designed into Zoom Player is unmatched! Every key, click, swipe, roll and button can be customized to your preferences.
How does Zoom Player look? Amazing. The screenshots tell half the story. You can choose from several high quality skins, you can adjust the skin and dialogs to look good on any display (regardless of the screen size or resolution), you can tint the skin's color, replace the Home Theater's background image and if you're an artist, create your own custom skins.
What about Streaming? Zoom Player has the best IPTV implementation on Windows, providing access to live TV from across the world (caveat below). YouTube channels, trends, searches and playlists can be added into the Media Library with ease. Other streaming sites either work automatically or can be supported through 3rd party plug-ins.
Home Theater? Zoom Player includes an extensive list of Home Theater features backed up by a powerful media library that can help organize your collection and content sources (see screenshots), including a TV and Movie JukeBox modes that displays Backdrop and Poster images along with meta-data such as description, actors, genre, content-rating, etc.
Support? The quick usage guides are the first line of support, clear and concise. Next I wrote the most in-depth documentation for a media player, ever. Every checkbox or setting is explained in great detail. I personally provide support and take requests on Zoom Player's reddit community and review the Steam discussion area often. Every question is answered respectfully and thoughtfully. Did you come up with a cool new feature you would like me to add? Let me know and I'll see if I can get it done.
Caveats:
- Some of the Steam reviews are old and do not really represent Zoom Player's current potential, please try the demo version and see for yourself.
- HDR playback requires that the Video Renderer is set to either MadVR or MPC-VR. You may need to configure the selected video renderer with your choice of HDR settings.
- BluRay playback only works on decrypted content, encrypted discs will not play.
- To play BluRay discs with menus, you need to install libVLC and the JAVA runtime engine (Zoom Player v19 required).
- DVD playback works but it's dependent on Microsoft's Framework which can have issues on some systems. Most issues are easily resolved by switching the audio/video decoders used for DVD, but if you are having issues, create a post on the discussions area and I will help you resolve it.
- Zoom Player implements the IPTV playback standard but I did not include any commercial content. To access commercial IPTV, you must purchase a subscription from an IPTV service provider of your choice. I don't have a recommendation.
There is a lot more to Zoom Player, check out the extended feature list.

This is the best media player on Windows by far. It supports IPTV through playlists and also through Xtreme Codes. There is also support for an EPG grid layout view, like you would get on your television. In addition, Zoom supports: Plex, Emby and Jellyfin media shares as of the latest beta. So if you're on windows you don't need to use software from either of them, just login to you or your friends server and you can view all the content that they have shared through Zoom!!!!
The codec support is also amazing. I have yet to find any media that won't play on Zoom. Even 4K video files and 4K streaming works flawlessly.
The default settings are not for everybody and by default it behaves a little different from VLC. However, as Zoom is very customisable, you can tweak the settings for it to work just like VLC. I advise disabling the single click primary mouse function and changing the double click primary mouse function to go into full screen mode (just like VLC). I'd also advise setting the space bar function to pause the video (again just like VLC).
The developer of Zoom appears to be very active as well and is always around for support. He's helped me personally with issues that I have had with Zoom, so do post in the discussion forum here on Steam.
All in all, if you're after a media player that: plays content better than VLC, has full IPTV support and also supports the 3 most popular media sharing platforms (Plex, Jellyfin and Emby); then Zoom is definitely for you. Give the demo a try.
Some not-so-obvious things:
- Gamepad support: Options, Switch to advanced mode, Interface -> XInput
- Visualizations: Options/Audio/Visualizations, enable, add. One of the places where to find some:
http://support.xmplay.com/files.php?id=11&sby=popularity&rpp=20
- Codec problems / doesn't play stuff: Options, Advanced mode, "Help/Export" -> "Install Center (check for updates)", install/update stuff. Then maybe Playback -> Smart Play, Enable, Auto-configure.
- If video performance isn't great, or no subtitles: Options/Playback/Video, set video renderer to MadVR, press ok, reopen content to see the difference.
[*] If you don't know how to do something, try F1 to see the list of keyboard shortcuts. No, really, don't wave away, this list is big.
The player is quite versatile. It can be used both in desktop mode and the theater mode, which can be switched easily. There's also an option for laptops with sensor screens.
A lot of things to configure in advanced-mode options, which is a good thing and one of the selling points. It works fine out-of-the box though.
It's not an easy question which player is better, because in terms of content playback, they're all exactly the same, unless you choose different renderers or add some effects. So it's all about the interface and controls. After a few days of usage, configuring the various features, i found this player very pleasing to use.
It's been a while since I've used this kind of fancy interface though, foobar2000 and vlc mostly.
The player can be used without Steam after (probably) launching it at least once. Which is good for this kind of program.
On DVD playback, audio was not synched with video. As it progressed into the DVD, the audio started cutting out. Thought it might be just the DVD I was watching so watched a second one with the same issue, but also the playback was freezing.
Sorry for the no. I think it was harsh. It isn't a bad media player.
Not sure about the price though.
This player in no way can replace or improve the functionality and library control of JRIVER even MPC .... codec control sucks.. does not work properly or is just outright missing ... for playback of PASS-THROUGH M2TS files or lossless .iso image files of my HD collection. And even in the mess of the program, It does do this, then it in no way makes anything any easier like it said it does.... Oh stop using multiple programs to run music and movies and photos... Get it all under one roof....HA!.... i;M GOING TO BE STICKING WITH MPC (FREE) AND JRIVER $99 superior audio playback and organization with all codecs for serious digital lossless media libraries....mine going over 1300 movie titles blu ray and better and 30k plus audio lossless tracks .. a solid program with great library layout is paramount.... this is not
Just download WinDVD
have most player need to play a video/audio with codec & update download manager built in. dont have to download some stupid codec pack anymore
Used the Freeware version of this program for just about as long as it was first available. I've tried every major freeware video player on the market, all of which are useable, none of which are as customizable or feature rich as Zoom Player. I have a lot of old and new video I play using this program, so I have a lot of hours on record on Steam but probably 10x the amount of hours on the freeware, so I figured it was about time I help support the developers and buy the full version here on steam.
It's worth every penny at the current full price they charge here, getting it on special just makes it that much of a better deal. Don't bother with the reviews with 0.1hrs. If those people could actually read the feature list properly, they would understand that this player does not play back copy protected Blu-ray discs because that requires expensive licensing that would probably at least double the cost of this program. Also do not listen to thor32123's review, because this program plays every major format available as long as you have the proper filters and codecs installed on your computer. I have played back: mpg, mp4, avi, ogm, mkv, rm, rmv, rmvb, asf, wmv, qt, etc. Plays them all fine. I don't use this for audio, but every audio file I have accidently played on this program has played fine: mp3, wav, ogg, flac, etc.
Pros:
- Feature Rich & customizable well beyond the available freeware players out there
- Excellent Playlist feature, light years better than every other player I have tried
- Plays almost everything, copy protected Blu-ray being the only format I am aware of it doesn't
Cons:
- Doesn't play copy protected Blu-ray, but it doesn't claim it does either.
- Doesn't offer enough at the price point over freeware players for the casual media playback users.
[*] Steam Updates are sometimes buggy with Anti-virus software, requiring disabling your AV prior to updating
Overall: 9/10
While no copy protected Blu-ray playback support is a con, the program does not claim it does so you cannot fault the program for that. The problematic updates through Steam are a hastle, but more of a nitpick than a real con. Most programs tell you to disable your AV prior to installation as a precaution anyway, but this was the first time I have had a problem with installing an update or any program for many years now that were caused by an Anti-virus program.
If you're a casual media playback user, you'll be fine with any of the freeware players out there, VLC being the best 'Video player for Dummies' out there. If you absolutely have to have copy protected Blu-ray playback, look elsewhere. I have a set top player for my Blu-rays as well as a software player that came with my BD-R Writer so I did not need nor care about Blu-ray playback. I've used the software player that came with my burner once, and that was just to test if it was actually a fully useable version or just a trial (it's a full version). Any time I play a Blu-ray, I do it with my set top player.
If you're a power user, or not afraid of learning how to work with this program (not that difficult), there's no better video player out there available at this price point or cheaper.
Only 13 minutes of usage in Steam, but this is my main video-player ever since I bought it.
Zoom works like a lot of free players, but the smoothing of movie is where it excells. Playing MP4 files with ZOOM compared to WinAMP and MS Media Player *blegh* is a difference between having a smooth playback and blocks from time to time.
Only problem I think is configuration. Somehow the settings have been made way too complicated, even when it comes to simple stuff like 'play all videos from start' are hard to find...
I just wasted $30 on this, runs only a few formats that I can't seem to find or convert my videos into but on the bright side found freeware that works even better while searching,
Uninstall and never look back
This player cannot play legally-owned store-bought blu-ray discs.
Does not play blu-ray even though it says it does,
"All popular formats are supported : H.264, XVID, DIVX, DVD, Blu-Ray, FLV, WMV, QuickTime, MPEG 1/2/4, MP3, AAC, DTS, Dolby Digital, FLAC and many more including the recent ones such as Dolby-TrueHD, WebM, OPUS, etc..."
Either fix this or refund me!
Zoom Player is nice and very good player for using zipped files and folders If you want to play or view your files without you unzipped them. I like to zip my files in order to easily organize and backup and also save some free space on hard drive.
You can get it with discount sale price if you like purchasing new things on your Steam profile. And also I like easy setup and easy installing process of Steam. I also want to see free lifetime upgrades, editions, new functions, abilities and more.
Amazing media player, it can pretty much play anything :D
For a Media player that replaces the use of multiple programs to handle a variety of formats, I am satisfied with this. I waited for the summer sale price to try it out and would recommend this.
The only negative I came across is the menu system takes a bit to get use to, Also the ability to at lease have Visualizations while music is playing seems to be lost to me…. still playing around with it.
9/10
Great, got it to work thanks to romulous [developer].
Step by step for others in the same spot,
• Ctrl+ O (or right click and select options/setup)
• Select “switch to advanced mode” (if you're not in already in it)
• From the drop menu on the left, select “playback”, “Audio”, and highlight “visualizations”. (Or just use the search feature at the bottom and input visualizations)
• Hit “Add”, and find the plugins you have on our PC.
this app. for just listening music. and $30.
Purchased this in steam sales. I have been looking for a media player to run all my music & movies. This so far is ticking all the right boxes. I was running VLC for my media and old school winamp for my music. So far Zoom Player is looking like a winner!
Only plays DVDs in low resolution.
I tried the demo, played a few videos, and was quite impressed with it.
I had a few other Media-Players installed on my computer, but right away I could notice better crispness, clarity and an overall greater quality of the video and audio that I see and hear with Zoom Player. I like the simplicity and intuitive feel of the controls, yet there are still a lot of options available that I can experiment with and set things to how I like. This will now be my default Media Player, and I'm glad to have bought the full version to help support the Developers of this high-quality software.

PS: As for the argument I see from some, "Why buy Zoom Player when there's plenty of free media-players available?".... Well, call me strange, but I like to help support the Developers of programs I enjoy and use.
Yes, there's free media-players out there, but they also tend to have a "Donate" option some place on their website or an option to upgrade to a Pro version. Plus, there's also a free-version of Zoom-Player that can be downloaded as well.
If you are serious about video playback, and need to tweak and customize how video is played then Zoom Player is definitely for you. Sure, VLC and MPC play "everything" and are free. But honestly - their user interface is a mess, it's hard to figure out where to customize playback and settings. They work fine for a basic user who just wants to play a file, but lacks a lot in the options and features.
Zoom Player has a ton of features, while making it easy to find the basic settings. The Advanced menu is huge, and it also has a search function to easily find the settings you want which is a huge bonus.
The intergrated Install Center allows you to download all the codecs you need to play 99% of all video out there: LAV Filter, FFDShow, MadVR, AC3filter and so on. There's no need to download those huge and confusing "codec-packs" that in my experience just mess up your playback.
There's a free version as well, available on the developer site, and it does basically everything the Steam version does, but you get some extra features here, and you are supporting a quality product (which IMO is important as well).
The most lacking feature might be the network streaming, like VLC has. But then again VLC was built from the ground up to be a networked media player.
I've been using Zoom for years now, and it outclasses all the other media players I've tried.
Personally I'd rather get it from the developers themselves, but having it in Steam is a nice addition.
Does not play normal Blu Ray movies. That is to say, you can't buy a Blu Ray movie, put it in your Blu Ray drive, and play it with this media player. A complete waste of money, as it just uses the FFMPEG codecs. VLC is an easy replacement for this.
