any game that I NEED a walkthrough to play Is not worth my time
Moving kinda backwards in Daedalic's catalog, I've already played the Deponias and one Edna & Harvey. This one was a real treat- gorgeous backgrounds, Disneyish-looking characters, at least TV-show-quality animated cutscenes, and great music. I actually prefer this more "classic" style over the newer stuff they've done.(although it's not as unique in style)
While it does have kind of a dark sense of humor, was nowhere near as dark as the Edna & Harvey I played. Definitely more of a classic adventure game feel with the characters. Spot, the morphing caterpillar, is a brilliantly weird idea for a companion.
A lot of the puzzles I had to look up(or at least look up parts of) as I doubt I could have come up with these solutions.(some I looked up just from lack of patience) For me, I had to disable texture filtering in the launcher just to have the menu text readable. A couple other minor bugs, just be sure to save periocially.(no auto save)
Just bought the sequel, Silence, so I'm very excited to see where it goes!
I was already struggling to enjoy this and then I hit a game-breaking bug that soft-locked my progress. I know I could use a saved-game provided by the publisher to unlock myself, but the game has already lost me and I would rather just delete it and move on. Unable to run in full-screen at all. Main character is unlikable and moves slower than a snail. Puzzles are illogical. At least the art is nice. Hard pass from me- does not live up to other point and clicks from the publisher.
Design and technical choices I don't like that annoys me and some other lack of quality.
The Whispered World Special Edition is an okay point and click adventure game, alright what is the story. In the world of Silence a young boy named Sadwick wakes up after having a terrible nightmare, it's nothing new for the young clown with nightmares, constant bullying and failure he has resigned to his fate, but after meeting a messenger for the king and being told of the world’s impending doom, an idea comes to him perhaps this is his chance that he can finally prove to everyone that he's not a failure, that he is capable and he can save the world or maybe he shall bring doom to the world and all he knows.
Now then let's get into the likes, the story is pretty good with nice twists and turns that was quite surprising, the story also has a bit of a dark comedy edge as you see Sadwick trying to do the right thing, but fumbling all the way, it can be a bit depressing and a little too much sometimes though, but what helped the story to not be completely depressing was the funny and interesting dialogue that you can listen too.
I also really loved the ending credits as it actually really helped fill in some of the gaps of the story. The comedy was okay some things were definitely chuckle-worthy and there was some nice references to other games and while it didn't really make me laugh, it'll probably make some people laugh.
The gameplay is okay it's your standard point and click game, pick up items and combining them to form different items, while solving some puzzles and finding ridiculous answers to different situations. What helps it to stand out is Spot this little caterpillar that has the ability to transform into different things it was quite an interesting idea. The puzzles were okayish some of their solutions could be kind of convoluted, kind of like old Point and click games that made you have to use every item until you got it right.
The graphics are good with very good designs and colors from characters, items to even the world and the background, it was nicely detailed, I also enjoyed the cutscenes as it sort of has a newgrounds feel to it but I mean that as a compliment. The levels are good each one quite diverse that really helps to establish this world, with its own history and culture and with the beautiful landscapes that are quite detailed makes you just want to explore it all.
The characters were a mixed bag some of them were very good and some were really unlikable jackasses, I liked Sadwick he was kind of cute and I was rooting for him as I felt bad for him. I also like Bando he was entertaining and the villain Loucaux was both entertaining and interesting.
The music is good with plenty of great tracks to listen too, the voice acting is good, each one of the voices fits the characters very well, although there is a bit of a problem with it, but I'll get to that in the dislikes.
Now then let's get into the dislikes, the story while I said it was good it does kind of end a bit anticlimactically, I also felt like there should have been a bit more dialogue and scenes for when Sadwick wakes up in the ending.
The puzzles in the game could be quite a pain it's sort of like old school point and click adventure games where you have to click on everything and use every item in order to progress, to the point where it feels a bit convoluted I don't know I feel like it could have had a bit more logical sense.
The voice acting as I said was good, but there's a weird thing where sometimes the characters are saying something, but then it would just cut off and just stop abruptly, it's definitely noticeable in chapter one. The game also has commentary, now normally I like commentaries as it can tell how the game was made, but the problem is the commentary is in a foreign language and while you could read it I feel like it could have been dubbed.
The game also has some bugs, but nothing game breaking, also the achievement Master of Disguise is a bit of a pain as you're supposed to transform spot 500 times, but there is no counter telling you how many times you've transformed him.
So with that said The Whispered World Special Edition is an okay point and click adventure game, it has a pretty good story, okay gameplay and good levels, so I recommend this game but I do suggest having a bit of patience with it and maybe get it when it's on sale.
Typical Point-n-click with a good and interesting story line. Very funny too, with some sarcasm. Really enjoy, especially with the sarcastic quips. About to play the sequel, 'Silence".
Legit one of my favorite games of all time. There were some issues but it didn't detract from my experience.
A short while back I played 'Silence' and really liked it. Scenery was great, the characters were likable and most puzzles where quite logical. Discovered that it was actually part 2 in the 'the Whispered World' storyline so had to give the original a go as well.
And this turned out to be almost a complete opposite of Silence. Firstly, it was hard to get it running at full screen. Had to set some compatibility options in Windows and manually pressing alt-enter each time I started the game. Once running, it looked fine but dated. Not something released in 2014.
Knewing what this game was about, I did expect the main character to be a bit of a sad / whiny clown. I did not expect it to be so extremely exaggerated by a voice over I couldn't bear anymore after playing for abour an hour or such.
On top of that, the puzzles were getting more and more illogical the further you got. About halfway, I was just trying everything on anything, hoping something would came out of it. And when it did, a lot of times it still didn't make any sense. Had to use a walkthough for a major part of the game. Something I'm not proud of.
It's not all bad. It surely had some funny and satisfying moments. But not enough to justify a positive rating.
Luckily you don't need to know anything about this one to enjoy part 2.

if you’re in the mood for a game that feels like it’s been crafted by a team of whimsical wizards who enjoy riddles and offbeat humor, grab The Whispered World Special Edition. Just remember: If a talking mushroom offers you advice, you might want to listen. After all, in this world, the weirder the character, the more likely they are to save the day!
The Special Edition adds a touch of polish to the original with enhanced graphics and voice acting that range from "delightfully eccentric" to "is this real life?" The game's humor is as dry as a desert cactus, but that’s part of its charm. It’s like the game itself is in on the joke, nudging you to laugh along with its absurdity.
