Assassin’s Creed® Liberation HD

tldr; Only buy/ play this game if you already are an AC fan that's into the lore of the series. If not this game doesn't offer much.

Since Liberation was originally a PS Vita exclusive spin-off, it's pretty much a down-scaled poor man AC3. I only give it a recommend since I'm a long time AC fan. And the only redeeming quality of this game is Aveline's story. And even so, it only provides a barely interesting enough lore bits and world building to the series, otherwise the story (even though intriguing and well-structured at its core) is very stripped down, incomplete and badly-paced while riddled with cutscenes. And occasionally, it's badly-written (eg. Agate's storyline). It isn't because the story is entirely bad, it is that the story lacks polish.

As for gameplay? Forget about it, it is AC3 but worse. Especially exploration/ completion are very badly designed. And the 3 persona is an interesting concept that which again, lacks polish.

AC Liberation screams "budget". Everything is very stripped down and not well thought-out, but had Ubisoft spent a bit more efforts and time, it could be potentially a decent fully-fledged game. Liberation alongside AC1 are very eligible for a proper remake. (you know, instead of AC4 which is still very playable in 2025 standard) But well, Ubisoft stopped caring about the story and lore in this nearly milked-to-death series since Odyssey (remember the time where we called ourselves assassins instead of hidden ones? yea, good time), and I highly doubted there's any creative energy left in Ubisoft anyway by looking at recent performances.

For me, AC Liberation is like a relic of the past, something that reminds you what this series used to be.

A decent port with different variety of a gameplay which was introduced. First female assassin game play that i know of. Definitely Recommended!!!

Was going to complain about how short and uninvolved the story is. Was going to complain about how the controls are even worse than AC1 (maybe and exaggeration... maybe.) Then I learned it was originally designed for handhelds and thought "ah, that makes sense!" It's... an okay game, totally skippable in terms of the overall storyline.

Assassin's Creed Liberation attempts to bring a unique perspective to the franchise, but it ultimately struggles to maintain engagement. Set in 18th-century New Orleans, the game follows Aveline de Grandpré, the series' first female protagonist, as she fights against the oppressive forces of the time. While the historical setting is intriguing, the execution feels lacking, with much of the story being forgettable and failing to leave a lasting impact. The game takes far too long to become interesting, making it a frustrating experience for most of its runtime.
The narrative has potential, offering a fresh perspective within the Assassin's Creed universe, but it is poorly paced and lacks depth. Aveline's story, while unique, is underwhelming due to weak character development and a plot that often feels disjointed. The most engaging moments only occur near the very end, making the journey there feel tedious. The writing and voice acting fail to bring the world to life, resulting in a forgettable story that does little to stand out in the franchise.
Gameplay suffers from severe repetition, making 75% of the experience dull and uninspired. The Persona system, which allows Aveline to change outfits for different abilities, is a great idea but is underutilized and clunky in execution. Missions become predictable, with stealth segments and combat encounters that offer little variety or challenge. Only in the later stages does the game introduce more exciting sequences, but by then, the overall experience has already been marred by monotony.
Visually, this version of Assassin’s Creed Liberation fares better than its remastered counterpart, maintaining a more consistent art style. The environments, while sometimes atmospheric, lack the level of detail and polish seen in other entries in the series. Character models and animations feel stiff, making cutscenes look awkward and unpolished. While the lighting and color palette suit the setting, the overall graphical quality does little to elevate the experience.
Overall, Assassin's Creed Liberation is a disappointing entry in the franchise, with a dull and repetitive structure that only becomes enjoyable near the very end. The story has potential but fails to deliver a compelling narrative, while the gameplay lacks depth and variety for the majority of the adventure. Despite this, the game does have some redeeming qualities, particularly in its setting and occasional standout moments. This version remains superior to the remastered edition, but that is not enough to save it from mediocrity.

It sort of worked on my last pc, but the current pc only cycles the launch like many other older games. Appears to me to be incompatible with any windows os that is newer than xp, do not buy unless you are familiar with file alterations to adapt older programs to the current OS versions. waste of my money
as such i havent had the chance to play the game beyond the initial tutorial missions on my previous pc, so this review is not about the game, its about the failure to launch the game and inability to play the game

I don't understand why this game was even made, because it really feels like not even half assed copied homework. If you are not a die hard AC fan, then don't even try this one, all the other games in the franchise are much better.
- Story is a bit lack luster
- There is no animal hunting and crafting anything, not even armor upgrading
- The music was a weird choice for AC game
- Lack of outfits - There are only color changes to the main ones and one "special" for each persona, which, if you don't want to bother with collectibles without in game map, you won't even see

Nothing special, but I'd recommend paying 5 bucks to play this version instead of the one in AC3 Remastered, that one looks like shit.

Awesome game.. i dont like fightin the alligator though .. if ur making another masterpiece of the greatest franchise and company.. u could make a outerspace ac. by giving the assasin the skill through the space station but causing some breakang through a bypass module and the station the guy was at went in because the mission he or she was on. and its on lefts chamber with triangular cyrochamber fluid from the tank broke and the assassin got a power to fly or make a assaissn suit from his friend and the power he uses to to get to space , and travels to space and he goes to planets where diffferent events happened like the first ac... <3 . how do u like that .. ur welcm. and thx ubisoft.. scott lessig ....

Really enjoyed the switching personas idea although it wasn't used enough. You can tell this was made for a portable device but it still holds up well. 100% grind is standard although the missions you have to deal with wait timers to collect resources are annoying. Would be interested in them returning to the multiple personas idea but it seems unlikely they will ever even return to this style of AC.

Fun

This game is a horribly optimized mess. Out of the '27 hours' I spent on it, at least 3 hours has been dealing with horrible freezes, a multitude of crashes and too many bugs to even mention.

Apart from this, the game itself is also a bit of a let-down. There are some things it does better than III, namely the parkour and climbing. It feels like the earlier AC games, where climbing a tower can be like a puzzle of sorts. Sadly, this doesn't get used enough in the game. The story is alright, but it feels all over the place, moreso than the other AC titles.

There are two main new features: the blowpipe and the costume/persona-system.
The blowpipe is great, although a bit on the strong side, it works very well in this setting though. Roaming through the bayou, poisoning roaming guards is great.
The persona system is nice in theory. In practice it's more limiting than interesting. Not all personas are able to climb or freerun. Apart from some missions, there is no point in being a different persona outside of the story sequences. The persona system also adds a bunch of persona-specific collectibles and quests, none of which are actual interesting content, and just busy-work for the completionists.

Thankfully, it's a short game. Finishing just the story should be less than 10 hours. As long as it works well on your PC, and you don't care about 100%-ing this game, it might almost be worth a 5.5/10.

Do not buy this game. There are SO many bugs or areas where your input doesnt register (trade system), the story is OK, but just OK. Worst bug is that it the screen goes dark (but not the HUD or the vision mode), completely randomly and more towards the end of the game than the beginning, it made the game SO much more difficult. I wouldn't recommend this game on sale. If it wasn't for the OCD of completing it, I would have uninstalled and moved on. Feel like I've lost a significant amount of time that I won't get back. I have almost every AC, I won't waste my time on any more AC games with bugs like that again.

Good but a small game. Worked flawlessly in my PC without any issues.

Worst entry in the Franchise imo. Just not a very good story. Saved only by the twist ending. Half the game you play as a slave or a Noble women and cannot parkour or use most of your weapons. Aveline is probably the weakest assassin of all time. Should have been just a few DLC missions instead of a full spin off.

This is not my favorite Assassin's Creed game but it's a ton of fun! Some people say it doesn't look as nice as other games, and that's true. But remember this was originally a PS Vita game.

Bottom line is, if you are a big fan of the series then you'll likely have a good time with this. I wouldn't make this your first entry, though, unless you just really like the time period.

Now with that out of the way:
Getting 100% was... a frustrating, preachy mess.

Missable achievements: No.
Grinding Achievements: YES!. Multiple "collect all" type achievements that slowly unlock as you progress the main game.
DLC-Only achievements: No.
Time-gated achievements: No.
Speed-run achievements: No.
RNG-achievements: No.
Does difficulty affect achievements: No difficulty choice.
First achievement unlock: Complete Sequence I most likely, a couple of minutes into the game.
Unobtainable/glitched achievements: Open-world jank leading to achievements breaking are possible (and reported by other users) but not in my case.

Notes:
* Because steam needs to open up Uplay (or whatever they call it these days) the game asks me to Login to Uplay EVERY TIME i boot it up. Even if i'm already loged in to Uplay in the Background (i literally have both apps open)... This is idiotic.
* Mission select (DNA) is available.
* The movement is extremely janky and only functional once you get used to it.
* Despite being a console game, controller support is missing. (steam helps with it's controller features but you'll see keyboard inputs the entire game) This is because the PC port team failed horribly.
* The user interface (especially in menus) was always dog-shit in all AC games. This one is way below that. As an example. try rebinding a key and realise that the you only see 5 bindings on screen at a time, and only the one you have selected is shown. This game should be taught in design schools as a negative example.
* Multiplayer features (Not many, highscores, leaderboards etc..) Are now disabled.
* The game was originally made for the PSVita and it shows. The only thing that doesn't show its' age and limitations are the voice acting and sound design, Everything else left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
* These days a lot of gamers are a bit sensitive to woke issues in games and this one... oh boy... it's full of both subtle and not so subtle preaching to the player about race, class etc.... While "there was an attempt" at portraying that particular age in a historic context, you can see that (in my opinion) they failed badly.
* the game reails for 20$ on steam right now but it's also included with AC3 Remastered (40$). That version might feature less bugs and more QOL but i'll never know...

Under 49% (way under), Not recommended.

Yet again another disaster by Ubisoft. The game is so buggy that even the Steam overlay doesn't work. There is a bug in the game that makes your whip permanently disappear. According to a post I found, this has been a known issue from a decade ago. But an HD update is more important than fixing game-breaking bugs, great priorities. I've stumbled upon issues in this game that I have never seen in any other. Swimming in the air, vanishing into nowhere and crashing the whole game, soft locking due to an animal attack script not playing correctly, running endlessly in a certain direction after instantly killing a guard with a blank poison dart. The whole game was made on a shoestring budget, and you can certainly tell when looking at the cutscenes, or rather lack thereof.

Edit: I had to replay half of the game just to get the whip back for this moronic achievement. And because you can't skip cutscenes in this dogshit game, it takes nearly twice the time. Ubisoft, kindly go fuck yourself for this little stunt.

You have to relog to Ubisoft Connect each time you launch the game thru Steam. Password not remembered.

No fast travel so it's a good thing the map is small. Sidequests are just okay bordering on meh. Collectibles are not too many, but they're never given a reason in the narrative (why am i buying watches???).

Okay with that out of the way; The game it self: the Graphics look good, and gameplay is decent. Finally, the story is ass. Overall not worth playing; and by not playing it you wont be missing out on anything.

This game doesn't open, The Ubisoft application opens and then shuts down. Don't waste money in buying this game entirely useless a waste of money and time, I tried and researched everything and every possible way but none of it seem to work.

Originally released on vita, and all the associated headaches were also ported over to the desktop build. Shame, shame, shame...

Love AC, hate the french drama, this one ain't my cup 'o tea.

6/10 decently fun, can't beat an older AC game. Just need to turn off Nvidia Overlay and it'll start right up. I wish this one was a little more flushed out, the story is there but falls just short a lot of the time just wish this wasn't designed as DLC and that it got the stand alone it deserves, the ending was satisfying however and there is still plenty to do in the open world for quick little activities. If you can get it on sale - totally worth it

i dont know why people grief this game its a lot of fun playing as the lady and unlocking her kit she starts off really bad and a burden to play but gets loads of skills as you progress it makes her an bit of a baddass.

the game might be short but i have not noticed i always like to replay the missions and see how well i do from other perspectives.

i bought this ages ago and its around the time they released lots of AC games every year, i just think they might be going a bit over kill im still trying to finish oddesy then im into the viking one im so behind, and i want to replay some of them, but you know i dont want to only play assassins creed. thats my only gripe, too many good games.

A horrible port of a spin off PS Vita title. Frequent crashes on top of countless glitches and don't forget the usual ubi-jank. Breaks my heart to see the game in such a horrible and barely playable state. Even though it is just a spin off title that was released for a handheld, this game had a lot going on. It introduced kill chains, has a nice story albeit rather short... Oh and I really liked the mechanic of having multiple personas that could change the gameplay dramatically and let you approach the missions in many different ways. But unfortunately the game has been long forgotten. Now the next thing will sound crazy and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but get AC3 remastered instead of this one. AC3R is bundled with remastered Liberation and it is atrually PLAYABLE at the sacrifice of graphics (sounds wild I know). Why Ubisoft, just why...

UbiSoft is an utter joke and this game has aged like sour milk.
As a bonus the game suddenly closed and dropped to desktop because I was not active on UbiSoft CONNECT and had to sign back in. Laughable. Assassin's Creed asset flip, so it's fine for a nostalgia trip, would not pay more than 5 bucks.

Play as black woman in 1770s New Orleans ! Fun ! In this episode, you can :
-Change identities as you move through the world (cool)
-NOT carry bodies (you are weak)
-pet street dogs (but not raccoons or chickens)
-Seduce random men (why)
-Build a commercial empire (actually fun)
-Get catcalled and assaulted on the street (not fun)
-Fight with a whip and an axe (very fun)
-Fall to the ground randomly because you have no sense of direction
-See a whale, I guess
-Wrestle alligators (not actually fun, may take up to 10 minutes because it doesn't work)

Terrible interface. Still a lot of bugs, but not too inconvenient (I'm just stuck at 98% map and 99% changing rooms for some reasons). IMPORTANT NOTE : DLCS ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE ANYMORE. Thanks Ubisoft.
Anyway this is a game with a great potential, that should have been much bigger.
