RE clone with Janky controls but still has that charm
Dude I can't believe I have not written a review on this game, I finished this several times on my ps1 back in the day and also 2 more times on PC also back in the day. The PC version is much more superior than the PS1 also this always reminded me of RE1 since you can choose 2 characters both having different routes but finding eachother in the mansion once and then, honeslty back in the day I used to like this game more than Resident evil 1 but not more than Resident Evil 2, 3 or Silent Hill 1, I think it was on par with SH1 and RE2 and 3, amazing game to say the least and it would be amazing if it had a proper remake, call Bloober team to remake this game please.
The original game is a classic, although the PC version is definitely rough. Setting up the controller is a huge pain, there isn't a proper borderless fullscreen setting, just a handful of other little annoyances like that.
CRUCIALLY: you must, and I mean must, go into your NVIDIA settings (or equivalent for your system) and limit this game's framerate to ~58 (anything close to but less than 60). This is an old game, and absolutely no safeguards have been set in place for higher framerates on newer hardware. I, like an idiot, played through this entire game at around 120fps without having any idea, and it was a nightmare. My playthrough was plagued by bugs, softlocks, crashes after every pre-rendered cutscene, weird input drops, borked menus, and huge problems interacting with doors, ladders, and pick-ups.
It's a shame, because it really colored my time with the game. I went back and limited the FPS to 58, tested it for an hour, and all those issues just...completely disappeared.
So with that in mind, with the caveat that you must limit your FPS to sub-60, I heartily recommend this game to fans of quirky, campy old-school survival horror games. It's got all the campy dialogue with fun-bad delivery, tank-controls, frustrating combat, circuitous puzzle logic, and fixed camera angles that you're looking for.
I think I'm cursed with this franchise. I really want to get into it, but always encounter glaring issues with each titles.
This one hurts tho, because the game is fun, but this port is horrible. This game NEEDS a remaster.
The Technical Issues
No resolution option and the aspect ratio is locked to 4:3.
For the 4:3 aspect ration, this is fine, it was designed that way back in the day (but if you hate 4:3 and want to play in 16:9, the game will be stretched). For the resolution tho, the game's launcher does not work on modern hardware and os, so you need to add extra arguments to the executable to set the proper resolution you want.
You need to fix the FPS to 60
The game will have weird physics, menu bugs and also visual bugs if you play with high framerates. You must lock the fps before you play.
No native controller support
For this game's age, the opposite would have surprised me. Thankfully, the SteamInput is very robust to map the keyboard on a DualSense controller. So if you plan to play on a controller, expect to play with SteamInput configuration a bit.
AMD users could have Black Screen during FMV Cutscenes
I'm playing on an NVIDIA GPU, so the game was working fine, but there is a lot of report of players having black screen during FMV cutscene on AMD GPU. Fixable for what I've read, but keep that in mind if you plan to buy this game.
The music is midi based and there is no way to fix it
The audio of the music is bad. Like VERY bad. It completely ruin the creepy atmosphere that the game is aiming to achieve. And since the music is "composed" live during gameplay, you can't simply replace the files.
Weird Collision detection
There is some weird collision detection where it make very hard to the player to interact with the environment. This makes it hard to unlock doors and just triggering a puzzle
Game Breaking Bugs
I could no longer progress in the game, I got stuck at boss in the library. Used 100 Shotgun ammos, 30 Handgun ammo and 10 Grenade Launcher rounds on the boss, it just refuse to die. Not only that, but you can't just leave the room while its alive. Seems to be an obscur bug for what I could find on the web, but this is the moment I gave up after a few tries.
Conclusion
Despite all of this, the game is kinda cool. The pre-rendered background are great, the flashlight mechanic is awesome and exploring the mansion while defeating the ennemies and solving puzzle is also fun. Not a game for newcomers into old school survival horrors, but you will feel right at home if you like the older Resident Evil and Silent Hill games.
I really wish this game would function properly, because there is something great within all of these technical problems. Hopefully, the source code of this game is not lost and the owner of the IP will do something with it.
i remeber playing this game back in 2001 on a Pentium .Ws 18 or 19 at the time .After playing the 2024 remake of the original 1992 Alone in the Dark .I recalled playing this game more then 20 years ago .And it had an interesting Lovercraftian premise .Which i didnt know about at the time .This brought back alot of memories about playing this game . Wanted to try playing this game again after 24 years . I have to say this game deserves a remake .
Even though I absolutely love survival horrors, I’ve never played any of the Alone in the Dark games, so it was about time I familiarized myself with this franchise. First, I wanted to try the brand new remake, but I got discouraged by all the negative reviews, so instead I turned my attention to this more classic installment.
The New Nightmare is one of those oldschool action-adventures, like the original Resident Evil trilogy, where your worst enemies are not the monsters or the puzzles, but the terrible tank controls and fixed camera angles. Shooting at a creature which can’t be seen in the screen your character is in, or trying to escape from a horde of beasts just to run into a wall after the next turn can be extremely frustrating. Finding the right spot where you can pick up or use an item is also a “fun” challenge, so good luck with that.
With that said, once you manage to get used to the controls, you get a true, classic survival horror experience. You get to choose between two characters, both with different routes, so if you want to see everything, you’ll need at least two playthroughs. You need to carefully conserve ammo and first-aid kits, and you can only save your game if you have so called Charms of Saving available, so you better plan every step you take. These gameplay features constantly keep you on edge, and then there are also the monsters (they’re not that crazy scary, but most of them can turn invisible), the infrequent music, the creepy environmental sounds and the surprisingly hard puzzles. Just try not to focus on the terrible voice acting…
All in all, I can recommend this to fans of this genre (but keep your expectations lower than for classic Resident Evil).
