Hanabusa is a young headstrong girl living in the Heian capital within medieval Japan. But when her mother is slain by evil spirits, her life turns into one of vengeance as she sets out to hunt and destroy the spirits.
During Hanabusa's travels, she meets a white fox who turns out to be a servant of the mountain god. Hanabusa receives a special sword passed down from her mother, which gives her the ability to see the true forms of spirits to help slay them. Shortly after, a spirit claiming to be Hanabusa's long-lost father, Hidetada, breaks her sword and leaves Hanabusa powerless and confused.
Now to mend her broken sword and learn the truth about her father, Hanabusa embarks on a journey to annihilate every last one of the evil spirits.

Lovely artwork, great music, unfortunately gameplay gets monotonous real quick.
Decent bang for the buck if you can get it for cheap, though.
I'm a sucker for anything set in the Heian period and it had MYTHOLOGY in it so of course I had to buy it.
The story and writing is....fine? I genuinely fell in love with the characters and the cute lil' monsters. Gameplay-wise, the difficulty spike during the last few chapters was surprising but possibly not going to be a big issue for the grinders out there.
Didn't finish it because the combat system felt less and less engaging as I went on. I think it had something to do with the same-y monsters toward the ending
A very charming game that decides on a theme and runs with it. The focus is on the "tsukumogami" (a type of yōkai that possesses a specific object) and the main story involves finding a way to stop the chaos they create, primarily by visiting a number of ancient gods. The game really goes all-in on the "traditional Japanese" aesthetic, which is reinforced with the focus on different types of yōkai, shrine gods, and (in the original) the gameplay focus on Japanese writing. This incredibly focused aesthetic adds a lot of charm to the game!! Most importantly, it's a faithful localization that doesn't try to downplay any of this intentional theming.
Gameplay mainly involves RPG-like combat where you must decipher the possessed object through hints before you are able to attack. After the deciphering, the combat portion is fairly plain other than timing your parries and using a tsukumogami power or two. Outside of combat, gameplay involves simply walking around interacting with things, while occasionally using tsukumogami powers to clear obstacles. The overall gameplay is fairly simple all things considered, but I feel it is nice enough, since the real weight of this game is mainly carried by its atmosphere, characters, and environment.
(Note: As someone who only played in Casual Mode, I can say the game really benefitted from the addition of that mode and how it provides a much smoother experience. It really helps the focus of the game stay on the story and world as opposed to having potentially tedious gameplay elements distract from it. The story is really able to shine now and so I would recommend Casual Mode as the default gameplay experience.)
The overall tone of the story has a very serious dramatic feel, which is always cool. In addition, there are a lot of moments in-between the crucial story beats for the characters to mess around and have some silly interactions. You can tell the one who made the game had a lot of fun designing and developing all the different characters you can encounter, as they all have a lot of personality to them despite the relative brevity of these silly in-betweens. I guess it only makes sense that the game eventually got visual novel DLCs that focus more on playing around with the characters outside of the context of a serious plot (something I always enjoy seeing creators do).
In essence, while the game is not perfect, you can tell there was a lot of heart and a lot of thought put into creating this world, which contributes to making it an special and enjoyable experience.
Underated gem. People complain about the battles being repetitive, as if all J-RPG weren't like that...
Good story, fun characters, cool mix of turn-based battles, timed block and word guessing, and an awesome boss theme.
Definitely a neat experience, the process of identifying spirits is interesting but winds up becoming simple, could do for a little more variety. Combat starts off simple but later the game adds a monster collecting aspect to increase the complexity. Overall a good game.
Not your typical jrpg... Not your typical pokemon collecting game... Swift gameplay, intriguing story, fun characters.
This game was a lot of fun, and seeing the monster designs and using the combat was great as it felt like a fresh way of doing combat (I always appreciate that in a game). While this game can get a tad repetitive and some of the excitement in battle is lost after facing the same spirit for the 99th time (ba-dum-tiss) I still recommend giving it a try.
A funky indie title. It's so many different things all at once. Simplistic menu-driven RPG combat, timed reactions like Paper Mario, mixed in with a word-based puzzle game and a Pokémon collect-a-thon, all wrapped up in an anime-style visual novel set in feudal Japan. An odd combination, but... it kinda works.
It's not a spectacular representation of any of those things, and considering its age you'd think the devs would have ironed out all the bugs and crashes by now (I've experienced three CTD's in the few hours played; thankfully, autosaves have softened those blows considerably).
But you know what? It's a unique combination of systems, it's not trying to be bigger than what it is, it does its job decently well, and despite a certain amount of repetition I'm not bored of what it has to offer. I approve of this little relatively unknown gem.
It's a very good game, although a bit buggy. If you follow these three steps, you'll have more fun and less bug problems:
1) Play on Casual mode so you only identify tsukumogami once in regular battles. If you don't, then completing your Spirit Index and level grinding will be painfully slow.
2) Have two save files. The first one is for the Capital only. Do not overwrite this save file anywhere else.
The second one is for in all other areas. Use it often, as you will sometimes encounter an error during battles. I think it is caused by a memory leak. When this happens, quit the game and reload your area save file from before the battle.
3) The skull hunting sidequest is also buggy. Unless you do a lot of level grinding, you may want to leave them for New Game Plus. When you enter a new area, ignore the skulls and unlock all of the map. This includes defeating any optional bosses.
Afterwards, you should overwrite your area save file. Now clear all the skulls in the area without saving and visit Soujun. Hopefully he recognises that you got all the skulls. If he doesn't, then reload your area save file and try again until he does. This issue may also be caused by a memory leak.
Also, once you beat the game for the first time, you unlock some extra features on the title screen such as a minigame with bonus CG rewards.
The DLC visual novels are also really good, so buy the complete collection.
This is a well crafted rpg game based on Japanese folklore and includes Tsukumogami, objects which come alive on their 100th birthday, with a dash of puzzles.
You are Hanabusa, a headstrong young woman who lost her parents many moons ago in a Tsukumogami attack on her home (the Heian Capital of medieval Japan), and is now determined to hunt down these evils spirits and try to destroy them. In her travels she meets a white fox, a servant of the Mountain God, who will help guide her in quest and gives her a special sword which once belonged to her mother and can reveal the true nature of the Tsukumogami. However, soon after, a spirit claiming to be her long lost father Hidetaka breaks this sword.
Now confused about what truly happened with her parents and powerless once more, Hanabusa must now set out on a quest for the truth of what happened and a journey to restore the sword to its former glory. And protect the people she cares about.
Mechanically both the puzzles, movement and combat mechanics are simple, it is the standard movement keys to navigate around maps and interact with objects. The combat uses the Z and X keys to attack and defend, during which your sword will gain wear damage (though you can use items during combat to heal up or repair your sword). The puzzles are more of a guessing game, when you attack an unidentified Tsukumogami letters will appear and you sue them to name the object. If successful, it will be revealed to you and you can then defeat it.
The rpg elements in this game come from a combination of levelling up Hanabusa, managing her hunger, the choices you make in game, catching the Tsukumogami (similar to Pokemon) and deciding which other you will be using in combat. I do like how different Tsukumogami have different types and have 2 abilities which can help your attack, defense or grant special abilities in combat. Gives the game a slight strategic element to it, plus some of these abilities can be used to solve later puzzles in the game.
The art has a vibrant anime style to it, and is full of detail in the character designs and backgrounds. I like how it is used to bring all the various Tsukumogami to life and still give them a slightly sinister edge. The combat background is a bit garish in comparison to the rest of the game, but it does fit in with the idea of fighting objects which are possessed by otherworldly spirits.
The music provides a lovely atmosphere to the game and is rather upbeat for the most part, it certainly fits with the positive personality of Hanabusa and her determination. The combat music is catchy and has a nice pacing to it, makes for easy listening and the rhythm makes it easy to loop during longer fights. The music overall doesn't have much variety but it fits the feel of the game perfectly and provides an Eastern feel. I also like that both the English and Japanese voice acting is of a high quality, I was expecting it to be a text based game only.
Overall a fun and upbeat game which is easy to get into and has plenty to keep you hooked. Worth picking up and playing for a fun weekend of fighting Tsukumogami.
99 Spirits is in general a good but slow game, it`s a mix of turn base RPGs and word riddles.
I find the best points of the game is the artstyle, character and enemie designs and the story.
The fighting system is also unique but not all people will like it.
The word riddles are base on letter of the word and discription on the item itself, it is quit simple and you able to find/buy "spirit indexes" where you find all the name from that area/chapter and as soon as you have beaten a demon item 3 times it will always appear directly from that point onwards so you don`t have to reguess the items all the time.
The RPG elemtens in the game are beside leveling up the character, are to upgrade your sword, capture demons and learn new skill with them. The spirit of the demons can be sloted into the gems of your sword so that you able to use there skills (max 5 demons).
The control during battles are at the beginning a bit strange but you can get use to it over time. You using the button z,x,c,v,b,n,m for different command like attack, defence, counters, capture demons and use demon skills.
The Story and setting reminds me a lot on Inuyasha, so it has his funny and serious moments.
Its set in feudal japan what is plagued by demons and a young girl who his give a demon slaying sword by a white fox and want to kill all demons because of the death of here parents.
The artstyle are very nice drawings and have some really good demon design in it. Some people maybe get a sense of Okami out of it.
The music in general is ok, nothing to fency but sure not bad.
I also need to confirm some things like other people already said in there reviews, the game will sometimes suddenly crash during the fighting (happend for me around 5times during 1 playthough) so better save on a extra slot so that you will not lose to much progress.
About the DLC "Cage of Night" and "Weeping Demon`s Bell" there are both visual novels with there owns artwork, side stories and extra side stories. There both not to short but also not extremely long just nice I would say.
At last I want to address on thing I see many people wondering, then you buy the game you will get 2 games in your steam library "99 Spirits" and "Tsukumogami" both is the same game but 99 Spirit is the english version and Tsukumogami is japanese version. Beside the langues are both compelte the same.
I love this gaaaaame!!! It's really a pretty easy and straightforward game - no major challenges at all. The dialogue has some laughs in it, the combat is only clicking or pushing the same buttons over and over, but I find the whole revealing the Tsukumogami thing really cool. Even that is easy, though some of the descriptive words are a little obscure. On top of that, when you buy this game, you get the Japanese version of it as well! Wouldn't really recommend for hardcore RPG people, but would definitely recommend for people who like story, and simple Japanese games with a classic Japanese soundtrack. ^^
The gameplay is simple, but the combination of several simple gameplay systems, including twitch and vocabulary puzzles, is surprisingly more fun than you might think.
While I got this game on sale, it is every bit worth the full price. I loved all the animations and story line though I often found myself opening notepad for some things but overall it's an easy game to get into. I really loved the combat in this, and especially the time when I had to do more work to figure things out due to plot reasons. You don't need to grind at all [even though I ended up doing so] and the puzzles are mildly challenging. If you are looking for something engaging and unique look no further than this game
I found this game to be overall very enjoyable in short 30~40 minute bursts. The character design is excellent and the music is great and the storyline and dialog is very well written. It’s not the sort of game you spend 4 hours a day playing, it leans more to the casual “waiting between college classes” side of gaming. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of youkai (妖怪).
I... Love... This... Game!
This is so cool. It's a wonderful combination of a RPG and a Visual Novel, that has you play a female role and save her home. I have yet to finish it, which demonstrates the complexity of the plot and how long it is. As I've mentioned in a previous review, I love RPGs that get me hooked on the story and VNs with more than one ending. This game has BOTH. Not only does it have both, it has side quests left, right and centre. Not only that, it has tons of achievements, some to do with the story, some not and an achievement for finding all of the endings.
My only gripe with this game, is the grinding. Which is what's currently holding me up in the game play.
To start with, this game is NOT FOR EVERYONE, far from it. You SHOULD try out the demo before buying it.
The game is about a swords(wo)man, Hanabusa, who fights evil spirits on her journey to restore a blade that is imbues with powers from differents gods and ultimately find out the source for the mass of spirits that have been rampaging lately. How the fighting happens is quite a different aproach from what you'd expect and also is the catch of the game.
When you fight the spirits, you will find out that they are practically invincible to your attacks, by attacking you'll gather energy that you can use to not actually damage the spirits, but to gather information about the spirit you are facing. What do you do with the information then? You'll have to find out the spirits actual form in order to be able to defeat it.
Sounds crazy all right.
When you enter combat you will have no idea what you are facing, apart from the knowledge of "this zone has these and those", you start off with a round of attacks, hopefully filling up your energy (or gem as the game calls them), when it's filled, you then spend it to gather info, the information gained will be hints about what the actual form of the spirit is, when you think you have enought information you can try to name the spirit, thus revealing the true form, and only then your attacks will start hurting the spirit. Naturally, you can skip the information gathering and just throw guesses, usually the spirits do a rather mean counter attack if you try to call them out and are wrong.
All this is done with simple controls, you either atttack, or defend, both gather energy for their respective gems, during the action round, you'll have the chance to deflect attacks from the monster and counter attack, in a reaction game fashion.
It gets repetive, fast, no doubt about that, but the challenge and fun is the little guessing game you have to do with the spirits. Eventually that will get to you too, and you wish it would be easier and faster, well luck is with you! Not too far into the game you actually will be able to start boosting numerous aspects of the fights, making them a ton smoother at which point the game really starts to slowly turn towards a more story telling type of a game with some action as the side dish.
Thanks to the cast of quite charming characters, it's not a bad thing at all.
Really, play the demo if you are curious, some will hate it, some will love it. I personally find it quite an entertaining experience. Oh and remember to save often if you end up getting the game, I've had a couple crashes when facing certain spirits and there are no autosaves.

Oh, wow, what can I say about this game that has not already been said? The story, the music, the artwork, the combat system combining puzzle solving elements as well as quick reaction timing... I don't know where to start!
The story is much deeper than it first appears on the surface, the characters are all pretty cool--from the Gokon sword weilding heroine Hanabusa, to her foxy companion Komiya and all the gods in between.
The artwork is very simple but surprisingly detailed, much like the paintings created in Japan's past--not quite as epic as Okami's art, but not bad for a still picture RPG!
I love the music, though it may get repetitive for some people, as it tends to loop quite often--especially in the longer battles.
The combat is just as I described it: puzzle solving combined with split second reactions of the player to beat the living tar out of TONS of demon beasties called Tsukumogami and the forces of darkness.
The mythology of ancient Japan, artwork harkening back to the paintings of the time, a really neat combat system equals--to me--a pretty cool game! Give it a try!
One note: SAVE OFTEN! Sometimes, the game crashes in battle, completely freezing up for... I dunno, some reason I don't know of. Usually I can get it functioning by leaving it running for 10-15 minutes and not touching it, but sometimes a restart is necessary.
If you're looking for an RPG with a nice visual style and combat designed to keep you in focus then this game may be your ticket.
It has a visually appealing style and interesting set of mechanics in combat that help keep you going and the story is fairly interesting with plenty of stuff on the side.
Also there is a lot of content outside the main story (blocked areas, scavenging and you can gamble for moniez)
Would recommend for an RPG nut or someone who knows Japanese because the game has 2 versions (one English version and the original full Japanese version)
Sound and visuals are good, the story is great The gameplay, however, is special. With a semi-turn based puzzle combat system featuring rpg elements, this makes a really good game. Minor bugs and the required knowledge of English and some eastern culture may keep a lot of people from enjoying it, though. 6/10
