while story is intriguing and grounded in semi historical events, voice acting is superb, dialogues are quite interesting and motion capture from 90s gives you strong feeling of interacting with real people, unfortunately i cant recommend this game.
For todays standards it has a clunky and frustrating navigation, 15fps is a recepie for diziness and 101 death achievemnt simply brute forces you to go explore all possible routes and choices in not appealing way.
i have zero sentiments to this game as i played this first time on steam, not in 90s, so probably my review can be harsh, but its fair, Game really needs to be remade/remastered, at current state play only if your life expectancy is around 300 years and you would like to explore every point&click adventure ever made. otherwise its a frustrating, maybe not waste, but not optimal expend of time.
if you dont care about "quality of experience" there is a good game inside, but personally i was tired at the end.
A game ahead of its time. Really good investigation thriller. Must play
To be honest, I dreaded playing "The Last Express" because I heard it's pretty hard and time-consuming, and I'm not sure whether the gameplay would be to my liking. But I gave it a shot finally.
After 2,5 hours of playing, I had no idea what I was doing. My buddy got murdered on the train so I did the only sensible thing and took over his identity. This game feels a bit like "Cruise for a Corpse". I walked back and forth between the sleeping cars, tried to get into the compartments when the conductors coudn't see me. I kept a notebook handy, trying to keep track of who's who and where they sleep. I think I should have spended more time eavesdropping on conversations in the restaurant than trying to find items or clues. At that point, I hadn't used the rewind function so I guessed I would only have to do it in Constantinople when it became obvious how bad I played and how much I missed. I read this game requires multiple playthroughs to get the good ending, I was just hoping it wouldn't get boring that way.
I was very surprised that I finished it in 6 hours time. I had to rewind a couple of times during the on-board concerto. I had a hard time finding the master key, and I died a couple of times because Kahina brained me, and also I accidentally blew up the train a couple of times.
There's an in-game hint system that basically tells you where to go and what to do in the form of Robert's thoughts and I refrained from using it for the first half of the game, but it was too tempting for the second half.
The game felt a lot like that movie "Source Code" for a bit, which is funny because Jake Gyllenhaal stars in that movie, and he also plays the "Prince of Persia".
I just wasn't very good searching the cabins, or getting inside them to begin with. And at one time I couldn't even get out anymore (I got in through the window and wanted to leave that way too, but it turned out I just had to use the door. Go figure.) There's actually a lot to read in this game, and I always skimmed through the text fast because I was afraid a passenger would walk in on me. Which never happened, actually.
And the infamous top-of-the-train fight kept me busy for a while, too. I also got a bad ending because I didn't acquire a certain item, so had to rewind again. But to be honest, the gameplay wasn't as difficult as I feared. Though I still felt there's a lot going on in that train I wasn't not aware of in a single playthrough.
So I played through it a second time. Knowing what to do this time only saved me half an hour. I got a bunch of extra scenes and conversations, like dancing with August. I lost a lot of time waiting for Alexei to make his move. I don't know what I did the first time but there it happened sooner. It's a very intriguing game and I recommend it if you want to immerse yourself in an old world.
this fucking RULES. get the original version though, this one's an ios port and while it's instantly compatible with modern systems, it makes the game feel cheap
