I don't know when and why I bought it but I know why I'm not going to play with it ever again:
The voica acting is so bad that cringeworthy would be a compliment.
The combat is even worse.

A decent finale to the Risen trilogy. While I enjoyed all three of the Risen games, I'm personally not a fan of the Pirate theme they implemented starting in in Risen 2.

In this one, it seems they held back slightly. While you still hop from island to island and gather crew in this one, like you do in 2, it seems they incorporated more room in this based on what made Risen 1 great. More magic and warrior type abilities and factions but also still having the pirate'y and voodoo stuff for folks who did enjoy that in the 2nd one.

The islands have a more fantasy feel rather then just various tropical instances. More mountainous regions, with forests, badlands, and lava filled areas. They also implemented the traditional fantasy sword type weapon along with the 'slashing' weapons from Risen 2. (why they are two different skills, I don't know).

In traditional Piranha Bytes fashion, this game has you feeling like a weak wuss in the first third, on par or equal to enemies in the middle section, and basically a god in the final third of the game. Its a satisfying feeling progressing from zero to hero which I think Piranha Bytes does the best in terms of RPG design.

A couple of minor gripes I have is that getting Armor is rare in this game. You mostly get a few different forms of pirate armor until you progress in your faction. However, I feel that you don't get enough progression of better armor until you are about to get to the last area of the game. Also, I somehow managed to get what seems like the best sword type weapon in the middle of the game, making most encounters after that a breeze. (I played on Ultra difficulty btw). The best 'slashing' type weapon was in the final area (along with the same sword I got earlier) so not sure why they made it so easy to purchase and upgrade the sword version.

If I was to rate all of the Risen games in order of my favorite, it would be Risen as the best. (mostly because it takes place on one massive island and has more of that Gothic feel). Risen 3 (this game) is a fairly close second, and Risen 2 being last. Risen 2 was fun but the weakest of the three in my opinion.

Game Review: Risen 3 - Titan Lords

Introduction

Greetings, my fellow adventurers, wanderers, and howling kin of the frost lands! I am Kiba Snowpaw, Alpha of the Ice Wolf Clan from the icy expanses of HowlStrom, where eternal winter wraps the land in a crystalline embrace once every century. I’ve traversed countless gaming worlds—from pixelated beginnings to the expansive galaxies of today—and today, I bring you a review of Risen 3 - Titan Lords, a game that seeks to rekindle the fire of Piranha Bytes' Gothic and Risen series. With my frost-forged expertise and sharp-eyed scrutiny, let’s sink our teeth into this icy RPG tale and unravel its mysteries!

Basic Plot Summary

In Risen 3 - Titan Lords, the gods have abandoned the world, and humanity teeters on the brink of despair. Titans roam unchecked, carving scars into the land and hearts of the people. You, a nameless protagonist (and sibling to Patty Steelbeard), suffer a fate worse than death—your soul is ripped away, plunging you into an epic quest to reclaim your essence and, perhaps, save the world. From demon-haunted lands to pirate-laden shores, every corner teems with quests, mysteries, and a touch of Piranha Bytes’ signature chaos.

Originality

The game bravely mixes pirate themes with dark fantasy, spiced up by the return of magic—a welcome addition after its notable absence in Risen 2. While it’s not as groundbreaking as Gothic, the blend of genres brings enough freshness to stand apart from generic RPGs. The pirate-magical hybrid setting offers just enough charm to howl for a bit longer.

About the Studio

Piranha Bytes, creators of the beloved Gothic series, are known for their unique take on RPG mechanics and intricate worlds. Despite their history of divisive titles, they’ve cultivated a loyal fanbase. However, Risen 3 arrives as the studio grapples with lessons learned from Risen 2’s criticisms. Compared to its predecessors, Risen 3 seeks to meld Risen 1’s grit with Risen 2’s accessibility.

Analysis/Evaluation

Character Development

 • Main Character: The Nameless Hero’s motivations are clear but generic. The personal stakes of losing one’s soul add weight, but the execution lacks depth. His journey feels more like a vessel for gameplay than a fleshed-out character arc.
 • Supporting Characters: Characters like Patty and Bones bring color, but often veer into caricature territory. Dialogues oscillate between genuine wit and cringy one-liners.
 • Character Arcs: Few supporting characters experience significant growth, though their quirks make them memorable. Bones’ dry humor is a standout.
 • Relatability: While the overarching “lost soul” theme has universal appeal, the lack of nuance in relationships makes it harder to form emotional bonds.

Structure

The game’s structure is open-world with faction-based progression. The choice of Demon Hunters, Guardians, or Voodoo Pirates shapes gameplay significantly, though the paths ultimately converge in a slightly predictable endgame.

Mechanics

 • Combat: Revamped from Risen 2, combat feels more dynamic but retains a clunky edge. Button mashing is penalized, encouraging tactical timing. However, overpowered spells can trivialize encounters.
 • Magic: A triumphant return! Spells are visually satisfying, though they lack variety in function. Fireballs and ice shards pack a punch but feel interchangeable.
 • Exploration: Verticality and hidden treasures enrich exploration. Climbing, swimming, and spelunking reward curious players, though some areas feel barren.
 • Quests: A mixed bag. The variety is commendable, but fetch quests and shallow objectives dilute the overall experience.

Implementation

Piranha Bytes’ handcrafted approach shines in world-building, but technical hiccups (clipping issues, awkward animations) and outdated visuals betray the game’s ambitious scope. The AI struggles, with companions often feeling like a liability rather than an asset.

Impact

For fans of Gothic or the original Risen, this entry evokes nostalgia while addressing some prior missteps. However, it fails to leave a lasting mark compared to contemporaries like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim.

Hook and Thesis

Risen 3 - Titan Lords claws at greatness with its rich atmosphere and faction diversity but stumbles on execution. It’s a frostbitten gem—beautiful yet flawed, best appreciated by those with a hearty love for Eurojank RPGs.

Praise and Critique

Praise:

 • Immersive world design with rich lore.
 • Return of magic adds depth to combat.
 • Factions offer distinct playstyles.
 • Humor and quirky dialogues.
 • Rewarding exploration for curious players.

Critique:

 • Clunky combat and animation.
 • Shallow character development.
 • Recycled assets and linear endgame.
 • Technical issues and performance hiccups.
 • [*]Inconsistent quest quality.

Personal Opinion

Enjoyment: As a frost-bound adventurer, I appreciated the chilly aesthetics and nostalgic Gothic vibes. Exploring shadowed forests and ruined temples awakened the howling wanderer in me.

Hatement: The combat system often left me growling with frustration. A tighter, more refined system would’ve made this wolf howl in delight.

Highlights and Drawbacks

Highlights:
- The Demon Hunter faction’s spells are chef’s-kiss satisfying.
- Vertical exploration rewards ingenuity.

Drawbacks:
- Underwhelming boss fights.
- Lack of enemy diversity post-midgame.

Comparison

Compared to The Witcher 3, Risen 3 feels more niche, catering to Gothic fans. While Skyrim’s polish outshines it, Risen 3 brings a handcrafted charm absent from AAA titles.

Overall Conclusion

Risen 3 is an icy cocktail of charm and chaos. It’s an acquired taste, best savored by those who embrace its janky charm and can overlook its flaws. As an alpha male ice wolf from HowlStrom, I’d say this game is worth a frosty evening by the fire, even if it occasionally leaves you growling.

The combat is by far the worst thing - Risen 1 was the peak where you could build your own character. Risen 2 introduced pirates and now the Risen 3 is building upon it - making big mistakes and copy/paste stuff.
Does not bring anything new and makes things boring and tasteless. You will forget every single character and dialogue within 10 minutes

Risen 3: Titan Lords is the third game of the Risen trilogy which continues the Risen storyline under different circumstances. A new Nameless Hero, who is the brother of Patty Steelbeard (one of the main characters in the prequels), loses his soul to the monsters known as the Shadows and seemingly dies in combat but his body is awakened by Doctor Bones, who explains him that unless he regains his soul, he will slowly transform into a Shadow. The new Hero begins his journey to seek assistance and recreate his former pirate crew in the known world to get his soul back and destroy Nekroloth, Titan Lord of Death, who has stolen the Hero’s soul and started unleashing his Shadows through crystal portals to cause apocalyptic destruction in the world.
The gameplay mechanics, such as combat controls and skill point system, are similar compared to the prequel (referring to only Risen 2), though in this game the same mechanics are more polished. As in the prequel, game the player has freedom to choose and explore in different areas, where the player can complete various story and side quests, even when some of them recommend further leveling up and skills. Sometimes this means somewhat lengthy grinding and jumping back and forth between different areas multiple times, but, personally, it feels a bit more rewarding. There is also the additional soul point system, which determines the soul state of the player between restoring and corrupting his soul; this depends on the player’s actions and moral choices in each story-related and side quest dialogue, impacting in the player’s relations with other characters (whether they are and remain hired to the crew or not) and overall storyline.
Risen 3 offers a balanced amount of both pirate and fantasy experience. Unlike the prequels, which focus much more on being games of singular genres, the third game brings back elements and features of pirate fight and magic combat. Depending on the faction the player chooses to join, there are different skills obtainable exclusively in each faction. The game also brings back iconic characters of the both prequels, becoming either friends or foes of the player; I like the fact how the Hero can “recruit” Mendoza and make him feel uncomfortable just by being the good guy...
Risen 3: Titan Lords is a decently good third game to end the entire trilogy, which I enjoyed playing. It may not be that great game on today’s standards, and certainly it is not a game without specific flaws, but in order to appreciate it to some extent, one should play the prequels first to see and feel the similarities, differences, and improvements of the games.

Imagine a game where pirates, demons, and random bugs team up to give you the ultimate fantasy adventure experience. You start off dead, lose your soul in the first five minutes, and then spend the rest of the game doing errands for people who clearly don’t care about your problems.

The combat system feels like you're waving a butter knife in slow motion. Want to block? Good luck, because the enemy AI has the brainpower of a caffeinated squirrel.

The half of the quests involve you picking up junk on the beach or hunting wild boars like some kind of medieval intern and the voice acting is like everyone showed up to record after three days without sleep.

In short, Risen 3 is a glorious mess. You'll hate every minute and then somehow, love it just enough to keep playing.

Great game, but it still feels weird that melee fighting, much like the first game, is the only real form of viable combat. I started playing Risen again after I saw it had added controller support and binged all 3 games in a couple weeks because I enjoyed them quite a bit. It's weird though I originally played the first game as a mage as many games don't have good mages and spell battles, but the first game disappointed with slow spellcasting (no auto-aim to make battles with magic more dynamic) and the spellcasting isn't strong enough to warrant not having any defense. Playing the 3rd game probably disappointed me the most as some of your defensive moves are stuff like dodging and absorbing attacks with your shoulder. Why couldn't a mage do that? It would have looked like a form of dancing kung-fu, but instead of with kicks, it would have been fireballs ala Street Fighter. Not being able to equip magic in the left-hand slot also seemed like there was internal strife between the development team as several of the spells, at least for the Pirate, the debuffs, were quick spells thrown out with the left hand as if they were meant to replace daggers and guns. If that is the case, I'm not surprised about the things other gamers have suspected of their subsequent games like Elex. The jankiness seems to be not from lack of skill, but from internal development conflicts. Wanting to make a certain kind of game, the team splitting on ideas and no one was able to resolve some of these conflicts and time must have ran out to do everything intended.

I didn't bother changing the Lost One to a new character in my head canon despite the Nameless one appearing in the final stage. I just say my Nameless One/Lost One are the same person and losing his soul is why he lost his abilities. He found out off screen Captain Steelbeard was really his father before he had a chance to shag Patty like Luke and Leia. He's angry and surly not because people didn't appreciate him saving the world twice, but because of their complacency and seeming unwillngness to risk everything like he has to not just save their lives, but the rest of the world. Dialogue like with Admiral Alaerez was my first indication that his character was changed at some point after development began, when he said "what do you mean we?!" As if he was mad he nearly died multiple times while Alvarez kicked back in his mansion with servants. So yeah, not a strong enough reason for me to not work it out with my imagination he's really the same person. Bones rescued him returning the favor of you rescuing his soul, etc. Alot of impact was missing because the didn't go through with that decision, but I just used my imagination and tied up some loose ends, including how he'd react to seeing old friends and knowing he'd set up two people to get married, etc.

Overall this series was very janky and it could have used stronger leadership in the form of direction. A Zelda-like game with true rpg elements is something even Final Fantasy and Ubisoft had been striving for, but first things first, you have to figure out whether something like running is more important than a dedicated button for casting secondary spells.

It could be a good game, but with a terrible combat system in which you receive 3 attacks before raising your sword, all of this regardless of the opponent's distance and your ranged attacks are generally useless.
In short, the gameplay gets boring in a short time.
