The style and setting are a breath of fresh air for normal Daedalic point-and-click adventure fare! First time I can think of that the characters are made to look like the beautifully "painted" backgrounds. Just enough small idle animation to bring them to life, with some excellent task animations. I thought this would be overly serious at first, but once the staff started wisecracking I was relieved. It is a bit complex with the amount of characters, history, and some philosophical mind-bending stuff, but thankfully most of the puzzles aren't too tough.
My favorite point and click games of all time! Was definitely an improvement from Chains of Satinav, as I found the puzzles to be a little more straight forward and enjoyable. Loved the characters and the story, and the ending definitely stuck with me. Would love a third game more than anything!!!
One of the few Point & Click games I've enjoyed, though it's more for the story than due to any gameplay. The epic King's Quest-styled fantasy adventure has been replaced with something closer to 1001 Nights. It's a bit harder to read as a result as there's multiple protagonists, constantly jumping stories, plus strange hypotheticals and misplaced assumptions are foisted upon the reader. If that sounds hard to deal with, then thankfully the protagonist of 'Chains of Satinav' fills the role of audience insert and has many opportunities to ask questions about what was just told.
For gameplay, Memoria mercifully contain little of the 'moon logic' that point & click games are known for and gives you helper functions such as highlighting all interactables on-screen. Usually you will have a rough idea of what can be done or what you have to do, unfortunately there are still places where this falls through and many more where actions and combinations feel unintuitive. Just give it your best shot and if you feel your puzzle enthusiasm dropping then read the next line of a guide, the story is the real reason to keep playing.
i have never felt passion and a compelling interest in a story like this one`s.......it`s an EPIC feeling adventure !
10 out of 10 and 5 stars *****
Gorgeous game. I always recommend both ''Dark Eye - Chains of Satinav' and 'Memoria' together. Memoria does a lot with time jumps and concludes the story of Geron and Nuri. However, it's new lead and the fantastic technological/mystical world she inhibits are a compelling new addition. I really want a 3rd game in the series. I just leave these characters and worlds!
This and Chains of Satinav are honestly one of the Best point & Click games. From Characters, Environments, Puzzles and Story... These Games are just cozy
In addition to that, this Game has one of the most interesting and unique narratives I've ever seen in a game.
The Ending / Conclusion is just .... chefs kiss
10/10
N.O.P as in nop! The guy character rarely annoying with poor voice over, hoped to have female protagonist in this one, alas this pesky dude still in the game. And just general poor quality, although some areas I see got improved.
TLDR: A brief, competent puzzle game without a whole lot to offer.
Five hundred years ago, Princess Sadja traveled to join the war in Drakonia, armed with mysterious artifacts. In present day, sometime-mage Geron stumbles onto one of those artifacts and hopes it will help free his fae friend from her raven prison.
Memoria is a pretty standard point-and-click adventure/puzzle game. Movement and interaction is done with mouse clicks. Holding the space bar highlights objects in the environment and a hidden inventory bar at the bottom of the screen (that pops up when hovered over) offers more options for interaction, including character spells that can be cast on objects on people, on inventory items, or the environment. Each area contains a set number of puzzles that need to be solved before the story progresses to the next area, and each area develops the story, either with Sadja's journey in the past or Geron's troubles in the game present.
Many of the puzzles are logical, in the sense that things that you would expect to happen, do happen. There was always a little surge of satisfaction when you hit a workable answer. Other puzzles have rather odd solutions that don't make a whole lot of sense. In the interest of full disclosure, I was able to solve most of them with some trial and error but a handful I had to look up.
It's a slower-paced game, where nothing really happens until the player chooses to do something. A few sequences require rapid actions (clicking on a few things in quick succession, mostly while NPCs are distracted) but they don't launch until the player sets them off, and those actions can be repeated until you get it right. That apprentice caught you sneaking into the barracks to steal a precious contraption? No worries; he'll just scold you and shoo you out and you can try again. And again. And again. I know, the game is done that way so that players don't get "locked out" of the right solutions. I get it ... but it does become a bit ridiculous. You can't really lose the game aside from giving an incorrect answer to one early question that results in a non-standard game over.
My biggest foe in the game itself was lack of engagement. I didn't connect with the characters very well. There wasn't any sense of urgency. The story itself is pretty bland and several times, I found myself wondering why I was even continuing. I finished but it was more because I'm a completionist than because I was loving the content.
The game crashed the first time I played it, when I clicked on the first conversation option, but I didn't have another crash, so maybe it was a fluke. I read some message board traffic that indicated game-breaking bugs but I didn't encounter any.
Graphics/animations are serviceable without being amazing. Sound is okay and the voice work varies from decent to laughable. Many of the Steam achievements are missable. Some are obtuse and unlikely to be found by accident, and at least one has a persistent problem with not activating. Fortunately, there are complete and easy-to-follow guides and troubleshooting solutions out there.
Memoria was okay for something different but I don't think it's destined to hold people's attention. It's another game where I wish Steam gave us a "Neutral" option for reviews. Unless you really love puzzle games, I don't recommend buying Memoria at full price. I picked it up on sale for a couple of bucks and for that, it was worth it.
Pros
- Decent puzzle solving scenes
- Game mostly feels stable
Cons
- Short, with no real replay value
- No real way to lose
Final Score: 6/10
This is one of the rare cases where the sequel improves upon the original. The game is more polished, has a more better written story, more intriguing characters, better voice acting, a hint system that prevents player from getting stuck (and having to look up walkthroughs)... this has to be one of my favourite point-and-click adventure games of all time. A must-play for any fan of the genre.
+1
The story is excellent.
Very nice game and story, fun puzzles
Convoluted mess of the game, very outdated animation (yes, even for 2013), no story introduction, jarring dialogs, very queationable UI.
A little old and some little glictch especially if you use the "quick move" with double click too often, may required a little fix for don't crash (you can the fix in Steam Guides/Community). BUT the story may keep you stuck on the screen, I personally Enjoy both 2 title Stories and Art style.
